Since ancient times, all civilisations have taken a considerable interest in beauty care. Actually, mankind has always pursued beauty and eternal youth. The first written references to beauty in ancient times are to be found in the Bible. It was Jezebel, the Queen of Israel, who anointed her face with oils and shorouda in order to seduce Jehu. In Egypt, the sophisticated beauty of the Pharaohs and their courts became a cult and was one of the reasons for the introduction of cosmetics and make-up. Nefertiti and Cleopatra were the two most noteworthy Egyptian queens due to their beauty and cosmetic secrets. The Greek was one of the civilisations that started to market large quantities of cosmetics, as well as promoted the cult of the body and bathing. Rome continued Greek beauty traditions and the cult of beauty stopped becoming exclusive to women as men also started to be involved. Renaissance Italy was considered to be the birthplace of fashion and beauty, importing it to the rest of Europe. In sixteenth century Florence, the monks of Santa Maria Novella created the first cosmetic laboratory. The name LeviSsime was created from each of the initials relating to the history of cosmetics. LEV: Means heart in Hebrew and symbolises the first written data on the use of cosmetic products, used by the queen of Israel, Jezebel, to conquer the heart of Jehu. E for EGYPT: A civilisation that represents the cult of sophisticated beauty. V for VENUS: Feminine beauty represented by the Roman goddess.
