All the Concessionaires that set up business during Lakefair on Water Street are non-profit organizations; Lakefair is the biggest fundraiser of the year for some of these organizations. A Message from the President For the past 53 years, LAKEFAIR VOLUNTEER’S in our community have worked hard to put on the Capital Lakefair Festival. Their goal has always been to GIVE TO the community a week full of activities designed to appeal to the majority of Thurston County citizens – fireworks, a parade, a scholarship pageant, entertainment, carnival rides and a variety of concessions that support many local non-profit groups. Giving back to; and benefiting the community in many ways is why Lakefair continues to exist. In addition to the many community programs that already benefit from Lakefair activities; Lakefair is always looking for new ways to help. For instance, last year First Lady Serry Barnes and Lakefair created a “Share a Bear” program. The goal was to raise enough funds to donate 1000 teddy bears to various organizations in the community. The results of that program were as follows: 1140 teddy bears went to 29 organizations in Thurston County including the Washington State Patrol, police departments, fire districts and departments, and hospitals including Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital. In 2010 Lakefair will join forces with the LITTLE RED SCHOOL HOUSE PROGRAM with its efforts to raise school supplies, backpacks and other items for children who would otherwise go without. Lakefair continues to be committed to working with state and city officials to resolve site issues and ongoing cost issues and, in the process, protect the ability of the local non-profits to continue to raise

funds. In 2009, twenty local non-profit organizations shared in over two-hundred thousand dollars generated by food booth sales. Not only are they an integral part of the glue that bonds the community together, the work of many of them helps support the community so that the burden does not fall on the city and county. The money these local non-profit groups raise stays in Thurston County and help these groups serve citizens in need.

In short, this is a festival that provides much enjoyment, benefits local non-profits and businesses, brings people together and brings money into city coffers. We hope it can continue into the next 50 years and beyond. We want to be allies with the state and city in bringing the community together – not adversaries in tearing apart one of its longest traditions. We owe the people of this community no less than our best efforts to make sure this festival – their festival – remains part of the fabric long into the future. Navy Cutter to be open for tours during Lakefair With its visit to Olympia for Lakefair’s 53rd Anniversary, the U.S. Navy Command Cutter Old Man IV will be celebrating its own 53rd year. The 50-foot wooden cabin cruiser, which serves as the Admiral’s Command Cutter for Navy Region Northwest, arrives at Olympia’s Percival Landing at 1 p.m Thursday, July 15, for a “port visit" during LAKEFAIR WEEKEND. The cutter is available for viewing and open to the public Friday afternoon, as well as Saturday and Sunday. The cutter is the only

vessel of its kind built by Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, WA . It was delivered to the Navy in January 1957, and is the last in a series of command cutters that remain operational. The vessel’s doubleplanked hull is made of Alaskan yellow cedar with natural teak decks. The cabin is constructed of mahogany and fir. The cutter, which weighs 20 tons, is 50 feet long, has a 15-foot beam and 4.5-foot draft and is powered by twin diesel engines. Chief Quartermaster Michael Eaton is from Navy

Region Northwest and is the Boat Office for this visit. This is Chief Quartermaster Eaton's first visit to Capital Lakefair. Boat Coxswain, Boatswain Mate First Class Jason Seachord Is In charge of the Navy Command Cutter and all of its topside maintenance

and outstanding ship-shape appearance. This is also his first visit to Capital Lakefair. Boat Engineer, Engineman Second Class Bob Cardwell maintains the cutter's twin diesel engines as well as other operational and maintenance duties. This Is his second visit to Capital Lakefair.

Lakefair Queen 2009 Michelle Santos “Our new Queens of Lakefair 2009… Michelle Santos, Shelby Collins, Rychelle Willis, Liz Jodway and Paula Tilson!” That is what the five of us were hoping to hear, knowing we were, and are, all so deserving of the title. In our discussions prior to the coronation, we were confident that the new Lakefair Queen could easily be any one of us. I, Michelle Santos, feel extremely blessed to have been the one crowned the 52rd Queen for the Capital Lakefair Royalty Scholarship Program. I have lived in Lacey my entire life and finally have an outlet like Lakefair to give back to my community which is what this is all about! As your reigning Queen, I would like to, not only be a strong representative for Capital Lakefair and the Lacey/Olympia/Tumwater community, but also act as a role model to those who are passionate about giving back to their community. Remembering my experiences as a Lakefair Princess, I realize that I have grown immensely as a person. As Princesses of the 2009 court, we have all had the opportunity to meet many unforgettable people from our

communities during the activities that we have participated in through this program. I’d like to thank everyone who has supported me throughout this entire experience. Thank you to the 2008 Court for all of their advice and guidance and, of course the 2009 Royalty Court who are all Queens in my eyes. I’d like to give a special “Thanks!” to the Capital Lakefair Capitalarians, specifically Bob and Serry Barnes whose commitment, hard work and passion for the community has never gone unappreciated or unnoticed. I would also like to thank Peggy Brink who did an outstanding job her first year as the Royalty Scholarship Chairman for Capital Lakefair. She is a wonderful mentor and a “second mother” to the entire court. Last but not least, I would also like to thank my beautiful family and friends who have been unconditionally supportive throughout this entire journey. Capital Lakefair Royal Scholarship Progam – 2010 The Capital Lakefair Royalty Scholarship Program is one of the most prestigious and longest running scholarship programs in the local area. The Program began 51 years ago and has provided more than 227 participants with over $200,000 in scholarship funding. Over the years, funding of this program has come from local companies such as Venture Bank, Red Wind Casino, area Lions Clubs, and the Ellen Marsh Memorial Fund. Each scholarship recipient has five years in which to use their scholarship monies and it may be used towards any type of higher education - traditional degree, trade schools or vocational training programs. What does it take to be a participant in this program? The requirements of the program initiated by Lakefair are (1) a fully enrolled junior, (2) a 3.3 cumulative GPA, (3) submit a completed application, (4) submit two letters of recommendation and (5) prepare a 500 word essay. Each participating school may submit a maximum of three qualified candidates. The applications must be postmarked by the second Monday in January. On the

first Saturday in February the candidates are required to participate in an interview format process, with a panel of five independent judges. On the third Saturday in February the top ten candidates (10) will participate in a second interview process with three different independent judges. During this process the applicants also present a three minute speech on a predetermined topic. Once the judges tabulate the results, the top six candidates will become the Capital Lakefair Royalty Court and then become eligible to compete for Capital Lakefair Queen. Each of the top six candidates will receive a $2,000 scholarship. The judging process used in the selection of the Capital Lakefair Queen starts with five new independent judges selected by the Lakefair Royalty Committee Chairperson. These judges cannot be family or friends of any of the candidates, a member of Capital Lakefair, or an employee of any of the participating school districts. These judges, while keeping their identity secret, attend community events and service club meetings at which the Lakefair Royal Court members

participate or speak. Both the community events and speaking engagements each make up 30 percent of the final score. The final phase of judging is a panel interview held the morning of Coronation. A ten-minute interview is followed by a luncheon with the judges. The scores are tabulated and the candidate with the highest total points will become our Capital Lakefair Queen. The Queen receives an additional $2,000 in scholarship funds, for a total of $4,000. In addition to these judging activities the Court participates in many other community projects such as: • Speaking at the Opening Day of Legilature • Olympia Arts Walk • Judging the entries for the Opening Day of boating season • Lacey Park’s Children’s Entertainment Series • Lacy Fun Fair The Program provides an educational opportunity for the participants to learn about issues in our communities and to meet local community leaders. It enhances their public speaking skills and helps prepare them for their adult life.

Attends Capital High School and is the daughter of Bassam and Verena Coury. Josephine plans to attend Princeton and begin pre-med study specializing in Interventional Radiology. She plans to travel and work in the Boer community in South Africa.

Attends North Thurston High School and is the daughter of Stephen and Barbara Burke. Josepha plans to attend one of three Universities. She will major in either psychology or journalism with a minor in linguistics or perhaps drama.

Osgood named Lakefair logo design Lakefair Grand by Color Graphics Marshal for 2010 Former Tumwater Mayor Ralph Osgood was first elected to the Tumwater City Council 1990 and then elected Mayor in 1994. After 20 years of service to the citizens and businesses of Tumwater, Ralph chose not to run for reelection last year. Throughout his 20 years as elected life, Ralph thought and acted with a regional approach to issues, always trying to bridge the divide between the jurisdictions of Thurston County. Ralph and his wife Annette represented the City of Tum-

Car show with cruise Drive your favorite car, truck, motor cycle, hot rod or what have you! On Friday, July 16, the Lakefair Car Show sponsored by Evergreen Direct Credit Union will be held once again at Marathon Park on the west shores of Capitol Lake. The show starts at 5:30 p.m. with awards at 9:15 p.m. Entry fee for the car show is $20 per vehicle. Awards will be presented in over 30 categories. Vehicle staging will be at the south end of Deschutes Parkway, south of Lakeridge

Lakefair Fireworks Capital Lakefair is proud to bring you the 2010 Grand Finale Fireworks show starting at 10 p.m. Sunday, July 18. Every year, Lakefair organizers say that each yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fireworks display will be the biggest and best ever. In 2010, this will be more true, thanks to the generous sponsorship from BUDWEISER and AMERICAN PUMP AND ELECTRIC. This is one display you wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to miss. Capital Lakefair continues to work with the State of Washington, City of Olympia and Olympia City Fire Marshal to ensure that, in 2010 and into the future, there will be a place along the shores of Capitol Lake for staging the Lakefair festival and fireworks.
