The Editorial

C

olombo – A name and a city by which Sri Lanka is identified all over the world. Most people say that Colombo is the Sri Lankan city which least represents the rest of the country; but I say otherwise. With its proud and magnificent Colonial buildings being oddly neighboured by showy and modern structures, Plush hotels and the poorest shacks bordering the very same Beira Lake, Distinctly Sri Lankan ‘Chinese’ food and ‘Bombay’ Faluda, a million and one bars, temples, restaurants, stray-dogs, boutiques, streets, trishaws, mosques, people and the added madness of traffic – all in an area of mere 3,694.20 km²; Colombo is one mixed cocktail! A mixed cocktail with a culture and a history worthy of boasting – just like Sri Lanka. If you’re a visitor (or sometimes even a resident) of my favourite city, it’s natural to feel confused and get lost in the hustle and bustle of Colombo without actually getting the chance to enjoy its many facets. Which is why we thought ‘Colombo Things-to-do’ would be a handy little companion to take you on a tour around town, show the best places in and about and tell you what’s going on. In this inaugural issue of Colombo Things-to-do we’ve given you expert reviews on places to shop, pamper, dine, lodge and even study. You can also find the most popular books, movies at local theatres, the current exhibitions, plays, concerts, corporate events and whatnots. We’ve also touched unique and fun things to do in Colombo; things that involve frenzied little tuk tuks that roam the city and the mouth-watering prawn-wadai at the Galle-Face greens; things that make Colombo, Colombo. So let’s take a ride around Colombo town, a ride minus the traffic, minus the confusion, plus the easy-to-use layout and great reviews. I know you’ll enjoy this one!

Best, Shamalee De Silva

The Magic Wrap o With the touch of the alluringly luxurious fabric, she evolves from a woman to a lady, with the pomp and grandeur of wrapping six yards of cloth she transforms to a queen and as the final layer drapes and the pallu cascades down gracefully, she transcends to a goddess… This is the wonder of the sari – the magic wrap of the East.

T

here is no other garment that draws looks of admiration and instant respect towards a woman in the Asian culture as a sari does. Even today, in the city of Colombo where the western fads are dominating fashion, the sari remains a solitude and unshaken tower of Asian pride by being the preferred choice among women for special occasions and professional-wear. With radically creative South Asian designers looking for ways to bring the sari in to the contemporary fashion during the late 90’s, the traditional sari went through a facelift and was reborn in the form of fabulous ‘designer saris’. Charged with funky sequins, outrageously bold prints, seductive jackets and crazy drapes the sari has re-entered the world of highfashion to stay.

20

Issue 1 March 2010

Colombo’s influx of designer saris is majorly from India, while a handpicked set of local designers and brands also dress Colombo’s fashionistas with their sensational saris. Satya Paul, Rocky S., Anjana Bhargav and Gauri Bajoria are among Colombo’s most popular Indian sari designers while Dharshi Keertisena, Barefoot, ’79 and Yolanda Aluvihare are local favourites. Saris with Conspicuously placed florals, daring animal prints, shimmery fabrics paired with jackets/ accessories in contrasting hues are in vogue for 2010 while hand-woven cotton and silk saris are considered timeless beauties owing to their distinctively ethnic charm. So, where do you treat yourself to such stunningly glamorous six yards of fabric?

tO DiNE Lavinia Breeze

Lavinia Breeze is our number one place to dine because of the Outstandingly Cooperative and Friendly Staff. While the quality of food is generally considered to be the most important factor when deciding the value of a dining place (which is also great at Lavinia Breeze), the comfortable and friendly atmosphere that the diners experience is another crucial aspect which establishes the success of a restaurant; and Lavinia Breeze excels in that!

W

ith a variety of food havens springing up in the city of Colombo, you can be guaranteed you will never go hungry whatever time of day it maybe; be it a hearty breakfast, a scrumptious midday meal, a teatime snack, or a delectable feast. While fast food has become a popular choice for many, the Burger has taken the top spot as the most famed fast food item. There are some small-scale restaurants/take-away places that specialize in burgers, offering a wide variety to choose from but it is very likely that most restaurants will reserve a section in their menu cards for the good ole faithful burger. It should be noted, however, that most burgers served are by no means suitable for those looking for a lowcalorie diet. For those who wish to ignore their expanding waistline for a moment, here are some spots from where you can grab yourself a greasy, juicy burger.

The Sugar Burger

The menu consists of a variety of burgers ranging from chicken, beef, fish, and vegetarian with a wide choice of extras and sauces. The double beef burger is highly recommended. Location: The Sugar Burger has two outlets at Odel Alexandra Place, at the food court and Odel Mt. Lavinia (take-away counter). Available for lunch and dinner at both locations. Price range: Slightly more expensive than your standard burger and would range between Rs. 400 and Rs. 600.

where to eat The Sandwich Factory

Dine in a HURRY Budz Tea and Coffee Lounge

This place has, among others, a fairly small selection of burgers which are made to perfection. The fish fillet burger is a must try. Good ambience and ideal for an afternoon getaway or to chill out with friends. Location: Budz is located at Rosmead Place, Colombo 7. Open from 11 am to midnight. Price range: Depending on your choice of extras, a burger here would cost you between Rs. 250 and Rs. 450.

Great take-away menu or even order in because they deliver steaming hot burgers to your door step. Ideal for a quick lunch or an evening snack on your way home. Location: A take-away kiosk at Dwellings, Green Path, Colombo 7. For delivery call 0115 666 550. Price range: Between Rs. 350 and Rs. 450.

Burgers King

Nope, it doesn’t have any links with the world renowned fast-food chain, but this is Colombo’s best substitute. While take-away is recommended, those who are more adventurous can battle the evening traffic and pollution and tuck in at the roadside sitting area. The chicken corden bleu burger and beef burger are highly recommended. Location: A mini kiosk at the Slave Island junction. Available from 5 pm to midnight. Price range: Between Rs. 150 and Rs. 250.

The Chill

A no-frills café that serves a variety of fresh and tasty burgers. Ideal pit stop to grab a quick snack on your way home or even stop by. The chicken burgers are recommended. Location: The Chill is located on Duplication Road, Bambalapitiya and is not easy to miss. Open for dinner only. Price range: Between Rs. 250 and Rs. 350

Gourmet from the Land of Long Life.

A few years back, when Japanese food was a novelty to Sri Lanka it was commonly believed to be nothing more than uncooked and nauseating smelly fish; but as local gastronomes started getting more daring with what they eat, the ‘smelly fish’ notion vanished and Colombo fell in love with the distinctively organic taste of Japanese cooking. Now that we discovered the taste of Japanese gourmet here in Colombo, let’s take a look at the extraordinary health benefits in the cuisines from the land of long life.

Issue 1 March 2010

More and more people are recognizing Japanese food as one of the world’s healthiest cuisines. With the primarily light-cooked or uncooked nature, use of organic rice, vegetables and profuse amounts of marine food, the traditional Japanese diet is remarkably low in cholesterol, fat, and calories, while being exceptionally high in fibre. Well…that’s all very nice, but do the benefits of Japanese food address the health troubles of the average Sri Lankan? Sure Does!

wards mass produced foods among the younger populace. Tofu (soy-bean curd) is an integral element in the Japanese diet, and can help you with lowering body fat mass without lowering muscle mass; meaning, you lose weight, but remain strong!

Get High on Immunity As a usual Japanese meal utilizes a variety of veggies, a myriad of vitamins, minerals, and anti-oxidants (micro-nutrients) are consumed with it. The natural food chemicals that make up these micro-nutrients play an active role in protecting the human body from common ailments such as cancer and viral infections like the common cold and even Dengue that are sure threats in Sri Lanka. So treat yourself to some Japanese with lots of fresh fish, vegetables and rice - it may be more than your hunger that benefits!

Low on your ‘GI Level’ Owing to some bad dietary habits, high blood sugar levels resulting in Diabetes is a growing problem among Sri Lankans. The glycemic index or GI is a measure of the effects of carbohydrates on blood sugar levels. Usual white rice can have a GI that range from 56 to 104 while Japanese rice types like Koshikari (Japonica) rice, have only a GI of 48+/8! Levelling that Fat Though obesity is not a pronounced threat in Sri Lanka, it is considered a looming danger due to the addiction to-

S

Which Spa?

ri Lanka, a country blessed with the ancient healing art of Ayurveda, houses countless spas and health resorts with great massages, treatments and ancient ways of beautifying and healing. So while you’re here, if you’ve decided that you want a spa treatment, or a weekend away being pampered then, you’ll want to choose a spa. Let us tell you how… •

The oldest trick – word of mouth reviews are generally honest and are resulted by actually good service.

Different spas excel and specialize in different things. Make sure that the spa you’re considering offers the particular treatment that you want.

A good spa needs to be a relaxing environment. You must be a person who attained amazing levels of spirituality to be able to unwind with heavy traffic, or noisy machinery in the background; in which case you probably won’t need a spa treatment!

Find a spa that offers half day or full day treatment packages, so that you can fully relax, and benefit from a day being massaged and fussed over.

If you’re rushed and is a fan of convenience, find out if your hotel has a spa, sometimes they might even bring the spa right in to your room.

If you’re looking for a spa to make you look glamorous for a special occasion such as a wedding or a flashy reunion, then you might want a spa that is affiliated to a beauty salon-there are plenty in Colombo!

If you’re looking for a couple’s weekend away, then why not see find a spa that offers discounts or other special offers for groups or couples? You might even get a discount for bringing in a second person.

Do not choose on cost alone. Better treatments usually cost more. You might prefer an expensive beauty treatment expertly done in a pleasant, tranquil environment, to a quick session on the High Street.

Now that you know how to choose the right spa, check out our list of the best spas in Sri Lanka to find your ideal spot for some quality pampering.

SRI LANKA

the Pettah Market in Colombo

O

riental markets are colourful, boisterous, chaotic and multifaceted. You never know what treasures you can find, and you never know which pickpocket can find you. Regardless, a walk through any oriental markets is an experience not to be soon forgotten.

North American malls are nothing but enclosed, heated or air-conditioned, multilevel and organized markets copied from open markets. Pettah, Colombo’s major bazaar is crammed with vendors, selling everything, you can think of – and each street has its own specialty. In an area of 24 blocks, thousands of tiny shops sell anything imaginable and some very unimaginable. Any tourist to Colombo should not miss the opportunity to visit Pettah, with a local guide. It’s thrilling experience that gives an instant insight into what makes Sri Lanka tick, yielding more fascinating glimpses of local life in a morning’s walk than does a week’s touring of the country by airconditioned bus. The market is always full, wall-to-wall,

52

Issue 1 March 2010

with shoppers and shops bursting at their seems with produce from Nuraya Eliya (Upcountry as the locals call it), meat, live poultry, imported goods, tea, bales of garments, shoes and cosmetics. Porters push their barrows packed high with boxes from everywhere. Walking through Pettah is rewarding, but hot, and if you decide to buy something, be sure to bargain. If you do not, you will be paying much more than the just price. Pettah is the entrepot of Sri Lanka. Country folk travel to Colombo to purchase kitchenware, expensive computers, textile, jewellery and gems. Fruit sellers shout periodically about their wares and roadside vendors of junk wait patiently for customers. The transition from an estate to a thriving bazaar took place when British civil servants, trained in Madras, arrived and decided to build homes further from the Fort in a district, Cinnamon Gardens. (Sri Lanka is the biggest cinnamon producer of the world. In fact, it was cinnamon that attracted the Portuguese to settle here, followed by the British.)

The entrance to the Pettah market is marked formally by a tall monument in the centre of a roundabout, known as the Khan Clock erected in 1923 to commemorate Grandee Franjee Bhikkajee Khan. One of the buildings in the market, built by the Dutch as the home of the governor is now a museum depicting life in Sri Lanka during two centuries – 17th to the 19th. However, before you decide to visit the museum, go and examine the fruits on display, at least six species of ripe bananas. Then there are mangosteens, rambutans, mangoes, pineapples, watermelons, imported apples (from China and Australia), citrus from Pakistan, grapes from Iran, raisins from California, and tamarinds. Next to the fruit section, you will find spices, dried herbs and ayurvedic ingredients. There are literally hundreds of spices for

mixing curries (in Sri Lanka every housewife blends her own curry), and herbs to cure every illness imaginable. In fact, Sri Lanka offers tired western executives exclusive resorts furnished with a range of ayruvedic herbs, and one personal doctor for every guest, plus a team of four cooks to prepare prescribed menus after consultations. Pettah is a lively market, loud as all oriental markets are, but thrilling beyond your imagination. Don’t miss it, if you ever happen to be in Colombo.

nless you’re one of the lucky people who’re blessed with enourmous riches, one of the most important considerations when you’re planning a vacation is the cost. A little bit of smart thinking like booking your trip during the off-season-generally save on airfare, cruise and hotel costs. Here are some great ways to minimize spending without sacrificing any of the fun or sometimes even the luxury.

Mealtimes Know your travel deal with the hotel – find out if breakfast or tea is included in your package. There is no reason to go out and pay for a meal if you’ve already paid for it at the hotel. Get economical yet filling snacks such as fruit or sandwiches from a local grocery or bakery. Have these on hand to munch on any time you get hungry rather than stopping at a restaurant. Find out about the promotions and special deals at the hotel you’re staying at. Lodging If the purpose of your trip is not enjoying your hotel room, there is no reason to go for five stars. Find out whether the place where you’re staying offers discounts for seniors or military, if you qualify as such. Whenever possible, book lodging ahead rather than at arrival; many hotels charge more for walk-in reservations.

Shopping and Sightseeing Take time in looking around for the best prices on souvenir items, rather than buying the first thing you find. You’ll be surprised at how much souvenir vendors bring down the price if you don’t jump at buying everything! Get off the tourist-hotspots to find local goods at costs that have not been inflated for tourists. Benefit from student discounts offered by many museums, some theatres and other tourist sites if you are still in school and have a international student ID. Most of all, Get your hands on a good travel-guide which provides you with upto-date information on the most economical places to dine, stay and shop in the country or town.

Your choice of place to dine in Colombo? And why? I like the Lagoon at the Cinnamon Grand. Love the food. Like the Seafood Cove at the Mount Lavinia Hotel for its atmosphere and of course, I am great fan of the Mount La-

vinia Hotel.

What is your Favourite meal of the day? Dinner time as it’s really the only time of the day I get to sit together and have a chat about the day with our kids.

who to meet Where do you like to shop in Sri Lanka? Odel is where I go to most; especially life has become very easy now with one right at the top of my road on Hotel Road. I also tend to buy from designers like Darshi Keertisena etc. What about shopping overseas? Walking along the High Street in London just lets you have a complete perspective change from the choice of Sri Lanka, for me it’s just enough. I can’t say that I am crazy about shopping and it’s a great priority of mine. So, I am not sure my comments can be taken as very valid here. Where do you like to holiday in Sri Lanka? And why? Don’t have one place in specific but I tend to like the inlands of Sri Lanka and to be by a Paddy Field or Jungle more than the beach; maybe because I live in Mt. Lavinia and see the beach daily. I love exploring Sri Lanka and we have been to many parts of the island and done quite a bit of road trips. In the rest of the world? I like Europe as there is so much to explore and you can do many long drives. So much of character and charm. My favourite destination is of course Italy. I love the liveliness and the energy of the people; love the food, the quality of life and most of all...Italians are very interesting people and know that life is there to be lived and don’t live for the work.

What’s your preferred resort in Sri Lanka? Jetwing’s Vil Uyana. I am a fan of the whole concept of Eco Tourism and nature and I think our country has all the natural resources to fully embark on positioning Sri Lanka as a destination in promoting ‘Sustainable Living, Eco Tourism etc’. It’s really a joy to see efforts such as Vil Uyana in Sri Lanka where they embrace being eco friendly. It’s serene yet has luxury blended in to it, making it a perfect holiday option. and if you’re overseas, where do you like to stay? No resort in specific and I don’t particularly like resorts. I tend to prefer staying in smaller places which have far more character than a typical resort. Favourite Book? I cannot specify one book but appreciate most books from many autobiographies to my own subject area. Reading lets you know the thoughts and ideas of brilliant people see things through their eyes and as we all know, your thoughts do influence your actions to a great extent. Favourite way to relax and de-stress? Walk on the beach...Since I live by the beach in Mt. Lavinia, this has been my choice. A daily walk on the beach keeps me stress free...when I do break this routine, I get stressed. I love relaxing with a book in the garden or just staring at the trees, watching the many birds that our garden attracts.
