This is Nissarana Galleries inaugural indigenous catalogue and it contains the works on Australian Indigenous Artists from many areas in Australia. The paintings represent the Culture and Dreamings of the individual artists and their Traditional families, communities and lands throughout the country. Indigenous artists come from a wide spectrum of the Australian Aboriginal community representing their many Nations. Some artists live their traditional lifestyle on their cultural lands while others live a more contemporary urban life in the cities and towns. If an artist has an aboriginal heritage and identifies with that and their artwork reflects that cultural connection then they are an indigenous artist. This catalogue has also included an Indonesian indigenous artist which we feel adds variety and also is a show of the solidarity between Australia’s indigenous people and other indigenous cultures around the world.

ANNA PRICE PETYARRE (PITJARA)

Title: ‘My Country’ Artist: Anna Price Petyarre (Pitjara) Size: 197 cm x 101 cm Framed with black ash edge frame Medium: Acrylic on Canvas Price: $6,600

ANNA PRICE PETYARRE Anna Price Petyarre, born 1960, is an Anmatyerre woman from the Boundary Bore area of the former Utopia Station, north east of Alice Springs. Anna is also known as Anna Pitjara, Anna Price and Anna Price Pitjara. She is the daughter of the late Glory Ngarla (Ngale, or Ngal) and niece to the late Emily Kame Kngwarreye. Anna began painting in the early 1980s initially painting Yam Seed Dreaming in a colourful and intricate expression of the songs and stories associated with her plant totem, the Bush Yam, and its seeds. The Bush Yam has been a staple food and water source for the Anmatyerre people for countless years and the seeds that form and scatter from the plant are ground up to make flour for damper. During ceremony, it is Anna's duty to pay homage to the yam seeds and give thanks for their abundance and regenerative qualities. Anna has changed her painting style radically several times over the last decade and now concentrates on extremely finely dotted works which represent her country and its ceremonial sites at Boundary Bore.

BELINDA GOLDER KNGWARREYE

Title: ‘Bush Tucker Dreaming’ Artist: Belinda Golder Kngwarreye Size: 190 cm x 100 cm Medium: Acrylic on Price: $4,200 DETAIL

BELINDA GOLDER KNGWARREYE Belinda Golder Kngwarreye is an Anmatyerre artist from the Utopia Homelands of Central Australia. Belinda comes from a line of artistic women in her family. She has inherited the Bush Plum Dreaming painterly style from her well known grandmother artist, Polly Ngale. She typically paints the same story as Polly, ‘Bush Plum’, and uses heavily layered paint to depict the foliage of the plant. However Belinda has added her own flair to this story by manipulating the paint in smooth application of analogous color scheme creates a rich, monochromatic look. The bush plum is known as anwekety and only fruits for a few weeks of the year. In the Jukurrpa Dreaming story the bush plum seeds were blown all over the ancestral lands by the winds and they bore fruit on Utopia lands. The first anwekety of the Dreaming grew there and became part of the food of the Anmatyerre people. Belinda is daughter to well known artist Bessie Petyarre and her sister is Janet Golder Kngwarreye. Belinda is a young artist with a growing list of exhibitions and acclaimations. Her work is exhibited in galleries across Australia and is gaining attention internationally.

Title: ‘Blossoming’ Artist: Bianca Gardiner - Dodd Size: 180 cm x 100 cm Medium: Acrylic on Canvas Framed Price: $7,900

“I was born in 1978 and spent my early years in the western suburbs of Sydney before moving to Tweed Heads with my family at age 10. My mother Gloria Gardiner, a prominent Aboriginal artist of the Northern Rivers was born in the Aboriginal community of Goodooga, Northwest of NSW. The traditional land of the Kamilaroi/Gamilaroi people. I have family ties to the Bundjalung lands of the Tweed and Byron coasts through my husband who is a Bundjalung man, and children. I have enjoyed living in the Coastal village of Pottsville Beach on the North Coast of NSW with my family for the past 10 years. My art reflects the coastal environment and surrounding elements that I live in, the estuaries, the beach and the life that lives within it. Many of the symbols within my art represent my interpretation of coastal life, harmony and unity. My art is another platform to articulate my creative journey. From young dancer, to adult teacher, choreographer and a Contemporary Aboriginal artist.” - Bianca

Its roots were so deep and so strong and so firmly embedded in the rock that it would bend but never break. That little bird never knew what an impact the tiny seed that it dropped made on the world. GLORIA PETYARRE (PITJARA)

Title: Large ‘Bush Medicine Leaves’ Artist: Gloria Petyarre Size: 200 cm x 130 cm Medium: Acrylic on Canvas Price: $12,500

Gloria Tamerre Petyarre, born 1945 often referred to as Gloria Pitjara, is arguably the most famous and significant of all female Australian Aboriginal Artists living today. She is internationally acclaimed for her ‘Bush Medicine Leaf’ paintings. Gloria first participated in the Utopian art programs in 1977 when she was 32 years of age. These early batik- making workshops marked the emergence of Aboriginal women artists. Up to this time they had commonly assisted men in the completion of their paintings, but were rarely permitted their own paint and canvas. From the outset their works were informed by the natural shapes and patterns of local leaves, flowers, seeds and grasses which provided the touchstone of form and structure. Gloria’s early batiks were richly colourful and reflected the daily interaction of the desert women with their environment. Her career took off with gusto when she won the most coveted Australian annual ‘Wynne Prize for Landscape’ at the New South Wales Gallery in 1999, for what was a most extraordinary painting for its time: A huge, gold and green abstract work, made up of swirling leaf shaped brush strokes. And GLORIA PETYARRE with her win came a triumph for Aboriginal art: Gloria Petyarre became the first Indigenous Australian artist ever to win a major art prize at the Gallery of New South Wales. She has been a finalist five times in the Wynne Prize and twice in Australia’s most prestigious art award, the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award as well as other national awards. Her paintings are in permanent collections is National Gallery of Australia, Museum of Victoria, Museum and Art Gallery of NT, Powerhouse Museum, Parliament House Canberra, Queensland Art Gallery, National Gallery of Victoria , Art Gallery of NSW, Art Gallery of South Australia, Holmes A’ Court Collection, British Museum London, Singapore Art Museum, Gold Coast City Art Gallery, Flinders University Art Gallery, Westpac New York, Allens Sydney and many more important private and public collections around the world. In 2019 Gloria retired due to ill health.

Title: ‘Angertla’ - Mountain Devil Lizard Dreaming’ Artist: Gloria Petyarre Size: 195 cm x 110 cm Medium: Acrylic on Canvas Price: $10,800

MOUNTAIN. DEVIL LIZARD DREAMING The Mountain Devil Lizard or Thorny Devil Lizard is part of the Dreaming and is an important part of the food source of the inhabitants of Central Australia. In the Dreamtime story the Old Woman Mountain Devil Lizard travelled across the Utopian country marking the Sacred Sights and creating the landscape. The Lizard is said to have created the colour of country with the sack of ochre contained in its neck. The Mountain Devil Lizard is a totem of Gloria and her sisters who are also acclaimed artists from the Utopian region. They are the custodians of the Mountain Devil Dreaming and have the responsibility to pass it on to future generations. The women include this story in the ‘Awelye’ – Body Paint Ceremony. Gloria’s paintings come from this ceremony and the abstraction of her brush stroke patterns are resemblant of the skin of the Lizard and women’s breasts and shoulders.

SORRY

Title : ‘Sorry’ Artist: Jandamarra Cadd Size: 155 cm x 135 cm Medium: Oil and Red Desert Sand on Canvas Framed Price: $8,000

The depiction of the vast complexity of the human condition is particularly difficult when it comes to a member of the Stolen Generation. Uncle Bob was forcibly taken from his mother at approx 7 years of age and was never again re-united with her. Uncle Bob, along with other indigenous children were taken from Uluru to Alice Springs and then taken to Croker Island – 1 hour flight off the coast of Darwin. So far from his home country and family, Uncle Bob was taught to denounce his Aboriginal language, customs and ancestors and lived there until he was an adult. Despite all that he has been through, Uncle Bob remained positive about a future of reconciliation, mutual respect and continually taught about moving forward without hatred and bitterness. He was a shining example of forgiveness and understanding. The painting depicted a parallel of Uncle Bob in the present and Uncle Bob with his mother in precious times in their country. The shadow of the hat symbolises bringing the hidden truth of history into the light to be the open truth. The red ochre on the painting is actual red desert sand collected with permission from the spot where Uncle Bob was taken away as a child.

BUSH TUKKA WOMAN Sam’s positive and welcoming spirit was comfortably familiar and I truly respected her desire to share ancient wisdom of bush tukka and living in harmony with nature as it was always intended. I painted her in the sacred dance of her totem (the Emu) and surrounded her with the creatures and bush foods of land and sea to illustrate her connection to nature and the ancestors. Her passion to invest time and education in the youth and pass on her teachings is inspirational.

WE ARE THAT LAND FINALIST Glencore Percival Portrait Painting Prize 2016 This portrait was created using only traditional dotwork to create the form of Uncle Bob Randall. This piece is representative of the connection that Aboriginal people have to the land and how it is at the core of their identity. Uncle Bob was a dear friend and strong father-figure to me, and I commenced this painting while he was on a palliative journey and completed it in the weeks following his passing. Uncle Bob for me will always embody the spirit of the land and a integral connection that has been happening here for thousands of generations.

From the KINSHIP Series The connections and responsibility to the whole community started early. Children as young as 6 years old would carry the younger ones on their backs when they got tired, and the girls would naturally tend to all the little ones regardless of birth-relation. This early learning of responsibility formed a solid foundation for knowing how to live in harmony and cohesion in a communal existence. BUSH YAM DREAMING

Title: ‘Bush Yam Dreaming’ Artist: Jeannie Mills Pwerle Size: 230 cm x 120 cm Medium: Acrylic on Canvas Price: $10,500

JEANNIE MILLS PWERLE Jeannie Mills Pwerle lives in a remote bushland area of Utopia, 300 kilometers north east of Alice Springs with a small family group of Aboriginal people. Her mother is Dolly Mills Petyarre and her uncle is Greeny Purvis Petyarre (both of whom are well known artists). Raised by a generation of indigenous artists who were part of the batik producing generation of the 1970s, Jeannie was exposed to the success that these artists experienced as they began to experiment with acrylic on canvas. Jeannie inherited the Yam Dreaming from her mother, however as an artist, she has depicted this dreaming in a unique style which is all her own. In 2008 she was a finalist in the Testra Art Prize.

Jeannie’s subject matter is the flower and seeds of the Anaty (Bush Yam, or potato). Using a variety of colours in each brush stroke, she builds up a pattern of harmonious (and occasionally contrasting) colours, embedded in (or defined by) a multitude of fine white dots, usually executed with intricate detail. Her paintings capture the viewer’s attention as their eyes meander across the canvas, enjoying the harmonies and subtle variations in each brush stroke - no two being the same.Jeannie’s Dreamings are centred on the seeds and blossom of the desert yam and on associated women’s ceremony. Although the Bush Yam Dreaming is shared by several other Utopian artists, including the prominent artist Emily Kame Kngwarreye, Jeannie’s works are unique to her and immediately recognisable. Her works and the variegated colour tones within them, make fascinating pieces in the home, because their colours subtly change, deepen or brighten with every nuance of the ambient light. The originally thick stripes often represented the lines of yam tracks, which form the strange growth patterns of the yam, a plant which was critical for human survival in the desert, but was very difficult to find. The yam is a staple part of the bush tucker diet of many indigenous people from the Central Desert region. It has an impressive root system, spreading up to twelve metres from the stalk, and is commonly found in woodland areas nearby a water source. Its bright green leaves and yellow flowers, can spread over quite a wide area, growing strongly until after the rainfall months when it is harvested by digging it out of the ground. By depicting the Yam Dreaming in their paintings, indigenous artists are able to pay homage to this significant plant and encourage its continual rejuvenation.

JEANNIE PETYARRE (PITJARA)

Title: ‘Bush Medicine Leaves’ Artist: Jeannie Petyarre (Pitjara) Size: 199 cm x 91.5 cm Medium: Acrylic on Canvas Price: $5,300

Jeannie Pitjara was born in the early 1950’s at Boundary Bore, an outstation of the Utopia region in Central Australia. She is a member of the very famous family of Aboriginal artists who have been a founding influence in the world-renowned Australian Aboriginal Art movement that has flourished over the past 50 years. Jeannie is the niece of the late great Emily Kame Kngwarreye who is considered the founding mother of this art movement. Her sister Rosemary Petyarre who is another famous aboriginal artist. Her half-sister is Evelyn Pultara who was the winner of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award in 2005. As one of the foremost artists at Utopia NT she is most well known for her Bush Yam Medicine leaves paintings that have their origins in the pencil yam plant. This plant is celebrated in their twelve women’s ceremonies (Awelye) in which dance, song lines and body paint pay respect to the seed and ensure its continued germination. The plant is a staple bush tucker food and is an important part of their Dreaming and Utopia and the leaves are also used as medicine. This painting represents the interweaving of the leaves of the pencil yam plant, its medicinal properties and the Bush Leaf Dreaming. Jeannie has exhibited in Europe, China and UAE. She has works in the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra and the Holme’s A’ Court collection, Perth.

‘AHAKEYE (BUSH PLUM) DREAMING’ After the Utopia batik movement of which Lindsay was the only male to participate in, in 1987 Lindsay started painting. He uses the traditional symbols to tell his stories including concentric circles which represent the significant ‘place’ of the story (for example the Bush Plum tree) or a sacred part of the men’s story. Lindsay also uses his four traditional colours, consisting of the two ochres (yellow and red), black and white, each with specific meaning. As an important tribal leader of his country, Lindsay must choose a successor to continue to teach new generations about the lore’s and stories of his culture. Title: ‘Multi-coloured Milky Way’ Artist: Rex Winston Walford Size: 90 cm x 90 cm Medium: Acrylic on Canvas Price: $2,500

‘MILKY WAY DREAMING’ From a very early age Rex knew he was adopted, that much was obvious, as he looked different to his other siblings. He always knew that he had an Aboriginal family out there somewhere, although he didn’t know exactly how much until much later in life.As a child Rex would look up to the stars and the huge Milky Way galaxy and know that his Aboriginal family lived under these same stars. This gave Rex a feeling of immense pride: knowledge and feeling that he belonged to his country. To think that he could look up at the Milky Way and see the same stars that his father and mother and their mother and father had also gazed upon gave Rex an important spiritual connection to his country and his cultural past. Although the stories of his ancestors can now only be heard through the blowing of the breeze Rex can always feel their presence when he gazes into the stars.
