EXCHANGE STUDENT HELP GUIDE PROJECT
Elective Two Semester Seven, 2011 By Nitasha Sarangi Guide: Prof. Tarun Deep Girdher http://nid-infographics-project.blogspot.com/
EXCHANGE STUDENT HELP GUIDE: AN OVERVIEW The project started with a motive of making an infographic based on the requirements of the first year students at NID. During the research, I found that there is no infographics for the exchange students on campus. Infact they are the people who face the most of the problems, starting with communication to climate and culture. Hence the journey started from there. I found out their problems and requirements and the possible graphic intervention. After almost 2 months of research and probing, I started working on the content along with the members of Student Exchange Programme of NID. Within a month and a half, the final content was ready. After the content, the process of content representation started. I started working on the project, keeping in mind - all the issues of the exchange students, who come to NID, - responsibiltiies of the International (Exchange) Co-ordinator and Officer, - my concerns as a graphic design student.
The motive of the project was to build a system to simplify the task of the officials and at the same time, give relevant information to the exchange students to make their stay convenient and easy. Finally, a system of infopack was built along the timeline to solve the purpose. There are two Infopacks made for the project. Detailed description of both the infopacks are in the following pages. The best part of this project is that it is going to be implemented in the coming semesters and benefit the users!
INFOPACK 1 Infopack 1 contains all information that the students need before coming to NID, in the form of FAQs. This design is meant for onscreen purposes only. It can go on the NID website or as attachment in the mails sent. Some of the criteria that I kept in mind were as follows: As it has to be read onscreen, it has to be made sure it is easy to navigate and one go navigation was important. The scrolling was very important for such kind of information. A person should get information with single direction scroll. Instead of going up and down the page. It has to be made in such a way that if one wants to take a print, the layout, colours and typefaces should not hinder.
INFOPACK 2: Infoguide Infopack 2 is a printed kit that the students will get, after reaching NID. The infoguide 2 contains information about NID, language and communication, food and health tips, emergency contact numbers and other information about currency, phone connection, daily needs and travel. It also has a blank timetable, that can be filled and submitted to the international co-ordinator to be filed in the academic records of the student. The main objective was to keep it handy for the exchange students and easy managable for the International coordinator and officer. Hence, a easy and simple fold was chosen and the whole design was done in MSWord.
INFOPACK 2: The Kit Infopack 2 is a compilation of the following : The Infoguide 2 (images above) - designed in this project. The maps of NID campus and surrounding areas - designed in this project. The KMC (Knowledge Management Centre/ Library) brochure and IT Centre brochure, KMC membership form, academic calendar and NID telephone directory - already existing in NID.
