CHARMINAR PRECINT DEVELOPMENT PROJECT Charminar is the face of Hyderabad having an incredible 400-year history of architecture and heritage, recently an initiative called Charminar pedestrianization project has been approved which involves working on improvisation of quality of urban space around Charminar and it’s precinct by the pedestrianization of the surrounds and conserving some historic structures around. This competition emerged in a harmonious nature with the CPP focusing on additional Urban Design aspects keeping in mind the future of the precinct. But situated in a dense and congested part of the city it presents a new challenge to develop its surroundings without affecting the existing unique social fabric.

REVIVAL – The design tries to revive some of the architectural elements of the past in a contemporary way adapting to the present day needs and requirements. These include some elements taken from folklores and stories told by the locals and other sources.

The above picture depicts a view of the present-day conditions like visual disturbance involving the electrical wiring, billboards, display boards, and unnecessary crowding due to the unorganized movement patterns caused by hawkers and vendors.

Char Kaman – Meaning the four gates, namely, Charminar Kaman, Machli Kaman, Kali Kaman, and Sher-e-Batil-Ki-Kaman each have a unique purpose and identity in the old times are now in a dilapidated stage.

The road from the Pathargatti street through the Charminar Kaman being the only major road to reach the Charminar is leading to problems like overcrowding, congestion, and unwanted stalling by the hawkers and buyers.

Laadbazar being the famous street for bangle shopping since the Nizam’s time is now in a messed up state with visual imbalance due to excessive hoardings, display boards, and electrical wiring.

The vending carts with different handicrafts, jewelry, and accessories are a part of Charminar’s urban fabric, But these create random movement patterns reducing the free space and disturbing the flow of people..

The design intervention is to bring back those contextual features into life and make them part of the new fabric – Golden curtains, Watchtower, Musical concert, Hanging emblems, etc.

To solve this problem an underground passage is designed with features like Gallery, Vending stalls, Public information center, and Washrooms, This opens directly at the mouth of Charminar.

As we cannot completely change the façade of the street, a proposal of a new arcade as a skin and a buffer space is introduced which brings an aesthetical symmetry to the street.

A new series of carts are placed like a curved staggering at four diagonal corners around the Charminar making way for comfortable movement throughout the precinct. CHARMINAR PRECINT DEVELOPMENT PROJECT | 14

The arches of the arcade, Lightwells above the passage and street tile patterns etc., all are taken from ornamentation present on Charminar
