PROFILE Hi, I’m Nithya! I am a passionate learner with a curious mind full of questions. I love to contemplate theories, concepts, ideas of spaces and how they affect and shape human experiences. I’m always trying to learn and analyze what makes good architecture, and how to we can create spaces that speak to the soul. I’m much interested in understanding the phenomenological aspects of architecture. I believe that learning never ends, and I want to keep exploring and experimenting with different aspects of architecture as I grow. Following are the selected works from my academic and professional experience. .

ASTRONOMY AND SPACE EXPERIENCE CENTER
UNDERGRADUATE THESIS PROJECT
The sunset theater
ASTRONOMY AND SPACE EXPERIENCE CENTER Astronomical discoveries captivate the human imagination by connecting to deep and long-standing questions about our origins and the nature of the universe in which we live. Awareness of the vastness of the universe, the extraordinary forms that other worlds can assume, and the place of our home planet in space and time inspire wonder in people of all ages. The goal here is to use the excitement that astronomy engenders to increase public understanding of science and scientific methods and to make clear that science is a pathway to discovery, not just a collection of facts. This center combines learning with an opportunity to experience the night sky at its best, as the selected site is situated in a dark sky location of class 3 on the Bortel scale. The site is on the outskirts of Madikeri, Karnataka, India, which is already buzzing with armature astronomers and photographers from throughout the state. The center aims to provide experiential spaces for experience of dark skies, for learning, for exhibition and spreading awareness about light pollution and importance of preserving the very few existing dark skies. The architectural aim here is to create experiential spaces which inspire curiosity and exploration within its users. A strong sense of vertical connection between the earth and the sky has been introduced in many significant spaces to draw attention towards sky. The spaces were divided into three building forms based on their programa and use. Astro tourism center, Learning center and accommodation.
Transitional spaces between the galleries
The site selected has a drop in topography towards south west, with views of the sunset through out the year. This became the starting point of the project. The idea was to create a space that translated astronomical phenomena into graspable human experience. The sunset theater is aligned with the sunset of the Winter solstice with two towers (sky towers). It will act as a place of congregation and frames the movement of the sun into a human experience, as a step towards the architectural aim of the project.
play with the character of light. They are narrow and have a sense of directionality to them. They leave a sense of embarking on a journey in its users. These are ramped up as it connects the galleries of different levels. Transitional spaces are diesigned with tall walls, which direct the views forward or toward the openings the frame the sky or the courtyard.
ASTRO TOURISM CENTER Astro tourism center is a exhibition / night sky experience center. Its for the public. It acts as an exhibition, learning and gathering space during the day and night sky experience center after sunset. The Astro tourism center was visualized as an building that hides within the topography of the site. It contains galleries, planetarium, office spaces, open theaters and a café. The galleries are are on stepped levels following the topography of the site.

THE GALLERY OF LIGHT POLLUTION – The gallery of light pollution has two parts - the exhibit and the audiovisual room. The AV room is adaptable, and holds a sky framing feature that guides the eyes of the users up and outward, enforcing the connection with the sky. THE HALL OF PLANET EARTH – The hall of planet earth is a dark themed gallery that talks about the science of various phenomena on earth. It’s a rectangular gallery.

THE GALLERY OF THE UNIVERSE – The gallery of the universe is a longitudinal gallery which talks about the timeline of the universe, from the big bang to today. The walls of the gallery rise upward and incline inwards at places making the user feel small, like we are in this huge universe. The path zig-zags to reveal only a part of the gallery at any moment inducing curiosity. The roof of the gallery is transparent to allow a visual connection to the sky above at all times.

ALIGNMENT The sunset theater and the night sky theater are aligned to the sunset on the winter solstice. The design of architectural elements is guided by this cosmic event. The sky towers rise into the sky framing the sunset of Dec 21st. The alignment of the sunset with the architecture is a way of bringing down the mysteries of the universe to the users, where they can behold and understand it as humans always have throughout history.
SKY TOWERS Towers as frames to the everchanging sky are points of vertical connection. They also form the pillars of alignment during the winter solstice.
NIGHT SKY THEATER A space of verticle connection with the sky. A space to learn about stars, constellations, galaxies, and the universe through stories, observation, and experience with the help of experts and enthusiastic community. Desgined as a circular space it has correlation with the sunset theater. A stairway connects the two.Seating and the semicircular reflecting pool adds to the drama of the experience. This thearter is strategically places as it is covered on all the sides to bar off any unintended light disturbing the view of the sky. The sunset theater above is open to public and can act as outdoor exhibition / workshop spaces. Whereas the night sky theater has restricted entry through the tourism center, and could be opened to public, as neccessary.
THE OBSERVATIONAL STATION The observational station is the space for astronomical observation on clear nights. It has a 165-degree view toward the southern horizon. Circular in the plan, consists of two levels of observation, with an indoor observation in the lower level, and OAT on the top with a reflection pool. It has a green roof acts as an horizontal extension of the land towards the horizon, its a space for outdoor observation. It is the last stop of the Astro tourism center, works through the night with to educate people about astronomy by the use of telescopes, expert storytellers and astrophysicists. A space for enthusiasts to develop a strong community for astro learning. It also has camping grounds around it. The station would have provision for red lights as its the least disturbing to the view of the sky.

The learning center also has an observing tower that can hold a telescope. The green roof almost acts as a horizontal extension of the ground to reach towards the sky. They are platforms for viewing and observation.
Image (above) is a sectional view of the observing station. Here we can see how the two platforms provide views towards the southern horizon.
Image (above) is a view of the learning center, spaces here serve gathering, learning and workshops. It also contains an auditorium for performences and speeches.
Image (below) is a view of the walkway leading to the observing station. The rich vegetation within the site provides a great opprtunity to design a pathway through them, providing a slow reveal to the best views of the sky within the site.
Image (below) is a sectional view of the hostel which is zoned away from public places to maintain security and privacy. Rooms have a view of the valley and the corridor facing the dense vegetation within the site. Also has a dining space and a common lounge. Seven twin rooms. Each room of 3.5x4m.

ENTRANCE PLAZA
The entrance plaza was designed as a point of gathering and dis-
tribution of people. The plaza has a circular introverted space with seating looking inward, this space could be used for gathering and storytelling, It could be used as an outdoor exhibition, for art installation, as a temporary pavilion adaptable to user needs. As the site recieves heavy rainfall during the monsoon season, this space is designed to collect water from the siteand turn into a water feature during those seasons.
02 VISUAL ART CENTER ACADEMIC PROJECT
VISUAL ART CENTER This project was an hypothetical urban insert in Jayanagar 4th block, Bangalore. The program and requirements of this project came from the studying of the urban layout of the neighborhood. Jayanagar 4th block is a prominent shopping district of the Jayanagar neighborhood. The streets of 4th block are always buzzling with people. Other than shopping and services the are also has a sports complex dedicated for students and athletes. The selected site contains a swimming pool the program of which is retained. Considering the buzz of activities already existing in and around the site, a need for a pause and reflection was observed. This need was achieved through programing an insert that was a combination of reflection and learning. And hence a visual art center was born. The visual art center holds exhibition galleries and performing spaces for various forms of art which become places of reflection. It also has workshops to learn visual arts like sculpting metal, glass, wood working, pottery and painting, all catering to interested students and artists.

LOST IN THE WOODS - A BIOPHILIC DESIGN APROACH Location - Sakleshpur, Karnataka
Distancing oneself from the busy world outside from time to time can help rejuvinate the body and soul. A weekend retreat would offer a platform to achieve this. It could provide an escape from our mundane routine and help one experience tranquil and scenic environments.
Project type - Professional (land development)
This project is designed with the intent of unifying different site conditions and creating various activity nodes along the site in order to create new economic opportunities as a weekend retreat and promote holistic living with nature.
Role - Assisted with the design process, presentation and visualizations
This idelogy can be achieved through the concept of Biophilic Design. Its implented by the means of designing buidigs and structures cohesively with natural elements, using earth bunds as boundaries instead of compound walls, promoting the use of clean energy, use of natural and local materials, encouraging self sustainability and creating social activities for economic growth.
The primary circulation would run along the contours and secondary circulation would run perpendicular while maximising the number of plots

BHONGIR MASTERPLAN DEVELOPMENT In the development of this masterplan the site is enriched by devising spatial relationships and programmatic layouts that spark chance encounters, encourage communication, interaction and consolidate communities, this provides the setting for social dialog. Urban street landscaping introduced, creates a safer walking environment, improves local business, lowers sun heat and air temperatures, and increases overall emotional and psychological health of the users. The masterplan is divided into 5 sectors. Each sector is assigned a colour theme that all the landscape elements, from the selection of trees, utilities, street furniture to the paving stones, follow. The theme helps in creating an identitity within the community and also helps with way-finding.

“Architecture has its own realm. It has a special physical relationship with life. I do not think of it primarily as either a message or a symbol, but as an envelope and background for life which goes on in and around it, a sensitive container for the rhythm of footsteps on the floor, for the concentration of work, for the silence of sleep.” ― Peter Zumthor, Thinking Architecture
