the image of a city

The various elements of urban design as understood by Kevin Lynch in his book “The Image of a City “ has been put to use to instigate the lacking interest of people towards the city and its ignored waterfront.

The ideas and the design in itself was a result of the placement various elements llike the path , node , landmark and their contribution to creating a cherishable memory map for the residents of Mangalore , while also giving back the city its long long historic identity .

To make the experience of the commercial centre friendly to the waterfront community of Mangalore , the concept of street shopping is adapted into the design by letting the major pathway through the site cut through the commercial centre.

The central atrium provides a visual connect between the floors and allow daylight to enter the main part of thebuilt space

The open spaces are divided within the three floors so that all different departments have their own landscaped areas and these spaces create voids within the form

The food court with direct acces to public from the ground floor opens up the hospital.

Viewn of Atrium

The atrium in the central space of the hospital provides a visual connect between all the floors. It allows sunlight to flow into the public access areas and makes the enviroment friendly to the patients rather than dark dingy spaces . A tree becomes the focal element in the space allowing patients to orient themselves .

The atrium has a free flowing form with no sharp edges to make the circulation seemless .

The prison being in one of the prime locations in the city of Cochin somehow becomes a passive participant in the urban fabric , affecting the people inside as well as outside. The brute force exerted by the form is a lesson in itself to instill a sense of fear against crime . At the same time , the volume within allows one to reflect upon himself and envision a better future outside .
