We have had a number of questions and concerns regarding workers’ compensation audits. Audits are normally performed between 30 and 60 days after the expiration of your policy. You may be mailed a form to complete, be contacted by phone for the information or have a visit scheduled by an auditor. Whether you complete the audit by filling out the forms or doing it over the phone or through a visit, make sure you are prepared. You should prepare a breakdown of payroll by employee and by classification. You will also need supporting documentation, such as WR-30s or 941s. It is important to make the proper classification of each employee. There are several classifications: Auto dismantler (includes drivers), iron or steel scrap dealer, part sales/counter person, clerical and sales. It is extremely important to classify each employee accurately. If you are directing the auditor to your accountant, you should review the information with your accountant before it is released to the auditor.

If you have used subcontractors, you will be requested to supply the following: ● The total cost of the subcontractors work. ● A certificate of insurance, evidencing the subcontractors general liability, auto and workers’ compensation insurance.

Without the above, the subcontractor cost will be charged as employee payroll. Always request a copy of the auditor’s worksheets for reference.
