CONCRETE INDUSTRY MANAGEMENT PROGRAM NEWS Volume 7 Issue 1

Dr. Mohamed Mahgoub, CIM Program Director

Spring, 2016 “Advancing the Concrete Industry by Degrees”

Inside this issue:

Dr. Mohamed Mahgoub

Greetings all, It is a great pleasure for me to be leading the NJIT CIM program. The program keeps moving forward. Students keep busy with seminars, conferences, field visits, guest speakers, socials, student club activities and fund raising events to increase oncampus awareness of how good our program is. We started to have more students have co-ops than ever before. Our graduates receive 3 job offers on average. This is a great sign to show how healthy our concrete industry is. We will have approximately 6 students graduating this coming May. We are doing our best to replace them to keep our enrollment. In February, two CIM NJIT students flew to Las Vegas to represent our program in a CIM student presentation competition. Jerhard Evangelista won the first place and got a $2,500 check. He had the honor to cut the ribbon to start the World of Concrete Show, the biggest show in the world,

that was attended by 65,000 people. He was also selected to have a poster presentation at NCE Salute in Newark Museum in March. During the spring break, we had for the first time two group of students attending two major events at the same time. One group flew to UK to participate in a CIM USA team in a one week camp to build a concrete cable stayed bridge. At the same time the other group was representing ICRI student chapter at a competition at ICRI conference in Puerto Rico. All of these achievements would not have been possible without the great effort of CIM students and the great support from the national and local patrons. I would like to thank everybody for their great and sincere efforts and ask everybody to remain dedicated to our CIM program at NJIT. With passion and determination, I am confident that we can achieve great goals during this coming year. “

CIM students were chosen to show case CIM’s success and the impacts it has made to the students education. students from program universities were invited to present their industry presentations. Students from New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), California State University (Chico), and Texas State University (TSU) participated in these presentations. CIM students completed presentations for both their internships and senior-level capstone course in their course of studies. Topics ranged from applied material research, studies on improving contractor efficiency, to new business development.

CIM student Jerhard Evangelista won first place in the student competition. “I was concise, clear and had good illustrations, while also demonstrating that I performed a real range of tasks. My boss at Sika has been incredible, engaging me in so many aspects of the business. I also tied it back to my education – to the academic and networking skills I learned at school. I explained how I got here.” Jerhard Evangelista had competed against other CIM Students from different CIM schools in the World of Concrete 2016. He presented about his experience working with his company, Sika. He started off as an intern and than employeed by Sika. “Working with Sika made a huge impact towards my goals for the future” Jerhard stated. “I was nervous the entire way out about the presentation and it was a relief just to have done it. Just to present at such a prominent event felt like enough. To win first place was so unexpected, but totally awesome! When I showed my mother a video of the ribbon cutting, she got a little emotional.”

CIM Students Build British Bridge The four CIM program universities were able to put theory into practice on a project in England recently. Students traveled to London and then on to the National Construction College in Bircham Newton, England in mid-March to participate in Constructionarium. During their week, two students from California State, Chico, two students from NJIT, five students from Texas State and six students from Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) constructed a scaled down replica of the Brewery Wharf Footbridge. Accompanying the students for this unique experience were Dr. John Schemmel (Texas State), Jon Huddleston and Dr. Marcus Knight, both from MTSU. The students were able to put their skills to the test and learn a great deal along the way. The group was required to hold preconstruction meetings each morning, bid and track expenses, maintain a profit, establish safe working conditions, conduct side layout and surveying, erect and tie rebar, build formwork, and pour and erect the bridge. Although there were many long days with hard work, the students were able to spend a day as tourists in London. Students from NJIT and MTSU were the first CIM program universities to participate in Constructionarium during the summer of 2014.

Silvi Social On Wednesday, March 9, 2016 CIM had a social that was attended by approximately 20 students. ICRI Conference During the week of Spring break, May 14 th to May 19th, five students who are dual majoring with CIM and Architecture were able to travel to ICRI’s 2016 Spring Convention in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Every convention topic is different and this year’s convention was about “Maintenance and Protection in Harsh Environments.” The students that were selected to attend this convention were also involved in a student competition against Chico State. While at the convention the students were not only able to network with some of the most knowledgeable people in the repair industry but they were given an opportunity that could possibly make a difference in their future. Through the convention the students were able to attend technical sessions that ICRI had to offer. They were able to learn more about the concrete repair industry with these sessions from the most knowledgeable minds in the business. The students were able to hear about upcoming trends in the industry, the newest technology that is being used today, the latest educational development as well as what is going to happen with other materials and practices going on. Our very own, Jerhard Evangelista was able to proudly present on Wednesday, March 16 th about his “Practical Learning Experiences Through Internship Under the CIM Program.”

This year, as part of the Alternate Spring Break Project, the NJIT ACI student chapter assisted with the construction of an outdoor shelter. The shelter would be used as a rest area where farm workers can recuperate and avoid excessive heat exposure from working in the field. The three ACI members working on the project were Gabriel Garcia (ACI chapter president), Ali Fardos (chapter secretary), and Aiel Aranda. In addition, the ACI team was assisted by two other workers from the OASIS. The group of five arrived on site at 10AM and began the project by establishing the foundation of the shelter. Once the foundations were set the team progressed onward by placing the floor boards and columns. Placing the frame work for the base and the roof proved to be challenge, but the team managed to complete the majority of the project within their anticipated time frame.

Working hard pays off is a true testament to what this student chapter has done. The project competition was a project called BABE (Bay Area Birthing Experience) Complex garage Repair with the owner being Medical Oversite Management Group. The students had to make changes to the documents that followed certain requests. The goal of the competition was to submit a bid on the repair that needed to be made which included things from the concrete sealant to the surface preparation to a parking garage. This was a wonderful learning experience for the students working on the project because some of them have never been exposed to this aspect of the field and now they know a little more about it than they did before.

NJIT ACI Alternative Spring Break For the second time, the ACI NJIT student chapter had responded to call for help during the 2016 Alternate Spring Break Project. The Alternate Spring Break involves students sacrificing their spring break in order to assist communities that have been affected by Super Storm Sandy. Last year, the ACI student chapter participated in Alternate Spring Break by assisting with a bridge restoration project for the OASIS TLC in Redbank, NJ. The OASIS TLC houses children with autism and offers them the opportunity to conduct farm work as a form of natural therapeutic intervention. The team of four managed to complete the project that was intended to last a week within a couple hours. Page Page 44
