Dr. Mohamed Mahgoub, CIM Program Director

Within the course of the years as Director of the NJIT CIM Program I have seen great improvement of the program. Enrollment of students being approximately 100 students today continue to strive in the program . I am pleased to say that during the Summer CIM Hosted nine Brazilian Students to Page 1

proceed with concrete research. During their stay here students not only got to perform research but also got to experience site visits along with lectures. During this summer we have started conducting a new research called the Void Research. Lead by Anlee Orama, this research has been started by gathering data from a newly poured concrete wall. Two of our CIM students were this years concrete canoe captains for the ASCE student chapter and are working on the design currently. Our students have also traveled to the NRMCA Concrete works conference and participated in a concrete truck competition held every year. The opportunities for our students to become involved are almost endless and for that I am proud to be the CIM program director at NJIT.

Events Brazilian Students On June 24, 2016, 20 Brazilian exchange students from Universidade Federal de Pernambuco in Brazil, arrived at NJIT. Teaming up with faculty from the Civil and CIM Departments. The students spent 10 weeks on multiple projects and events, such as a community-based pollution prevention project where the students developed plans to help small business in four different sectors to reduce their toxic emissions, curb waste, and cut costs. It did not stop there, the students took their models to paint, auto body, repair and beauty shops in Jersey City and Newark’s Ironbound district and offered to help them implement it. Sixteen businesses took them up on the proposal. In addition the 10 Brazilian students took on field visits to Sika, Weldon, and J&M Lifestyle decorative concrete. Void Research On July 15, 2016 three CIM Students and Anlee Orama went to New York. The students were assigned a wall in which they had to take random 2’ by 2’ sections and trace the air voids within 2’ by 2’ section. The points were randomly selected by a RNG (Random Number Generator) in which we utilized to get us a x distance and a y distance and used that point be our starting point. From the starting point we measured 2 feet to the left and to feet down completing a square. Students did this procedure six times to get six samples. After tracing the voids for each sample students brought back the traced samples and measured out the samples using three methods. The three methods are circle method, square method, and rectangular method. Students are to finish measuring the samples and submit their final results once finished. We would like to thank Janet Stanton from Ruttura and Sons Construction for letting our students take wall measurements from one of their job sites. ACI Dinner

Concrete Canoe Two of our Dual Degree Major students have been chosen to be Captains of the NJIT Concrete Canoe Team. Team Captains Ali Fardos and Gabriel Garcia both majoring in Civil Engineering and CIM are the leading the team into victory. Coming up with new and innovative ways to improving the casting process along with an improved light weight and durable concrete mix design. We are looking forward to have another competitive canoe that will take the school to Nationals. Here in the CIM program were looking forward to helping them and also helping expand their knowledge to other CIM and Civil Engineering Students. We wish them the best.

NRMCA ConcreteWorks On September 17 20 three CIM students along with Anlee Orama attended this conference which is always a good experience for the students. As the students can see what goes on outside in the concrete world along with being able to network and expand their connections. During this convention our students had the pleasure of participating in the races as judges. The race consisted of different obstacles such as Forward stop, and having to measure how close the truck has stopped to the marks, along with rear target stops and other obstacles.

On September 13, 2016 six CIM Students attended the NJACI Dinner. Which here they were able to network with companies in the area. Along with becoming more aware with certain projects going on in the area along with upcoming projects. ACI Dinners are always beneficial for the students to be able to compare what they learn in class and how it applies in the real world. Page 2
