CONCRETE INDUSTRY MANAGEMENT PROGRAM NEWS Volume 5 Issue 1

Dr. Mohamed Mahgoub, CIM Program Director State University at Chico led by Dr. Tanya Komas. We look forward for the new chapter to further explore the various aspects of concrete repair and rehabilitation and network with new industry partners.

The CIM Program is still advancing and still growing here at NJIT. Our numbers have increased to 80 students now and proud to announce that we have three students graduating in May increasing the number of our graduates to 30 since program inception. We are proud to unveil the official start of the NJIT ICRI Student Chapter. It is the second chapter after California

The program is also pleased to announce that our ACI Student Chapter won third place for the presentation category at the Reinforced Concrete Bowling Ball Competition at the ACI conference in Reno, NV on March 23, 2014. NJIT has also been recognized as an ACI Excellent University for the third year in a row. Thanks to the ACI NJ chapter, seven more CIM students became ACI field level test 1 certified. We look forward to the continued success and growth of the program. We thank every company, organization, and individual that has helped make this possible.

Jamie Gentoso, NE Patrons Board Chairperson The NJIT CIM program continues to grow in enrollment but not fast enough to meet the demand of the Northeast Patron employers. There are approximately three to four job opportunities per student on average. Recruitment continues to be the driving force of the program and securing the next generation of concrete industry professionals is the key to the program’s success. We are looking forward to the spring 2014 Patron’s meeting which will for Page 1

the first time feature a new interview process. In the past, interested students would network and potentially secure internships and full-time jobs on the same day of the meeting. Now, employers will have the opportunity to request resumes prior to the meeting and pre-select candidates to interview immediately after the meeting. The CIM program continually evolves to meet the needs of their students and Patron’s.

Industry Guest Speakers

The future of the CIM program at NJIT continues to prove fruitful with the great effort and commitment of the NE CIM Patrons. Do not lose the opportunity to become involved in the program as a guest speaker, student mentor, scholarship sponsor, and CIM student employer!

CIM 2011-2012 Annual report

NJIT CIM Newsletter

From the Editor, Anlee Orama Recruitment continues to be the focus of my initiatives on and off campus. Internal transfers into the CIM program once again provides the largest increase in enrollment. In addition, incoming freshman are showing signs of increase due to efforts in local high schools. Incoming freshman have the opportunity to benefit from the full CIM experience and we would like to reach a point where most of our students are incoming freshmen. Incoming community college students are showing great promises with the help of the CIM student ambassadors marketing CIM in their previous institutions. There is no doubt that CIM is an excellent academic track and our greatest challenge is the continued marketing and exposure that is needed. It is only a matter of time before CIM is widely recognized in NJ and beyond. I am looking forward to once again attending the American Schools Counselor Association Conference this year. It is a great venue to meet key personnel to network and make significant leaps into the high school market in the Northeast.

Recruitment initiatives at NJIT are also very important. CIM is often the talk of many undecided students at NJIT as the CIM student ambassadors spread the word throughout campus. I often meet with several students at once to discuss the program. Below are some of the major events at NJIT that provide great potential for recruitment. NJIT Open House, February 23, 2014 NJIT Major/Minor Fair, March 12, 2014 NJIT Experience Day, March 30, 2014 The NJIT major/minor fair provides personal interaction with prospective students in a one on one format. The NJIT Open House is also a great event where nearly one thousand high school students visit NJIT. We have the chance to meet individual advisors and follow up with potential school visits and provide information. The NJIR experience day helps us provide demonstrations to students and also market the program. We look forward to the continued accomplishments and growth of the program and thank everyone that has been an integral part of our formula for success.

CIM Alumni Class of 2013, Elvis Torres corporation and what they do. In this type of economy we are in, it is very important to get your foot in the door and with the CIM program, that is possible. Other majors are not that involved, many do not require an internship to graduate like the CIM program does.

Describe the opportunities that were available to you through the CIM program and how did that help you start your career in the industry. In the CIM program, you are allowed to go see the industry first hand and understand what goes on in that particular location. You also have people coming to NJIT to explain the background of their company/ Page 2

The CIM program is the reason why I am currently working for Sika Corporation in Lyndhurst, New Jersey. I am a Technical Service Lab Specialist. Sika is a world known brand when it comes to the construction and industrial field. We make sealants, coatings, epoxies, grouts, concrete, admixtures, and so much more. I provide assistance to our sales force by doing testing of product capability, making samples of our current systems, and general technical information. I also do prototype product testing for managers in the different product markets. Technical Services helps many different divisions of Sika, distributors of Sika products, contractors, engineers and home owner who are looking for technical information on a construction product. I have been working for Sika for three years, two years as an intern and one year in my current position.
