CONCRETE INDUSTRY MANAGEMENT PROGRAM NEWS

Dr. Mohamed Mahgoub, CIM Program Director students a wonderful chance to network and a great opportunity to better understand the career potential. The program still has approximately 100% job placement which makes us amongst the top programs at NJIT. CIM has the highest number of graduates on May and August 2016 (Please state here how many?)

The Concrete Industry Management (CIM) program at NJIT continues to move forward. There is a continued excitement and passion in the program like no other program at NJIT. It has almost been six years since I became the Program Director and I have witnessed a surge of activities since 2010. For example, this calendar year alone, CIM students have attended ACI, ICRI, World of Concrete, NY ICRI, NJACI, PACA, NJCAA meetings and conventions. These meetings and events give the

We have experience a very busy summer. We had a chance this summer to have nine exchange undergraduate students from Brazil came to NJIT to learn concrete. They spent 12 weeks with us and went back with wonderful memories. We also, witnessed this summer a surge in the Senior project and Co-op students that we never had before. All of these activities would not have happened without continued support of the national and local patrons and also the great students we have that make the program continue its success.

Once again we compile the adventures of the NJIT CIM program for our loyal fans in industry academics, and abroad. Our success depends on everyones contribution to the program and our students. Working towards increasing enrollment is an ongoing challenge especially with our recent high graduaPage 1

tion rate. Nevertheless, we continue to improve our recruitment and retention initiatives to promote the program and educate the general student body about the promising careers and opportunities possible with the CIM program. Stay tuned for the success stories of our recent graduates and students working in internships. I would also like to take an opportunity to encourage all parties to not hesitate to promote CIM in any venue that is applicable and reach out to myself or Dr. Mahgoub with ideas, suggestions, or to bring in any potential student to join the program. On our end, we vow to keep them in good hands and help them through every step of the way.

Companies that interviewed included Sika Corporation, Silvi Group, Weldon Materials, Vector Construction, Hyde Concrete, Jersey Precast, Solidia Technologies, Beyond Concrete, and for the first time Clark Construction. In addition, many other companies took the time to network with the students.

On May 5, 2016 NJIT CIM program hosted the Spring Bi-Annual Northeast Patrons meeting in the Atrium at the NJIT campus center. This meeting is for our supporting Patrons to personally visit NJIT and learn about what the CIM program is achieving and how they can become involved and engage with the students. Attending the meeting were our Local CIM Patrons, NJIT Administration, CIM Graduates and current enrolled students. Dr. Mohamed Mahgoub, CIM Program Director is exceedingly grateful for all sincere supporters. Every Patrons meeting is enhanced with the presentations of our excellent students and graduates. CIM students presented their work experience and their research experience along with competition experience. With time, the CIM program has proven itself to be successful in many aspects. The students are happy, they get jobs, and they love what they do. Speaking of jobs, we coordinated a CIM job fair immediately after the meeting to give an opportunity to some of our Patrons to interview our students for internships and full- time jobs.

Industry Events ACI Convention April 17-21 2016 Milwaukee, WI

The ACI student chapter Bowling Ball competition took place at Milwaukee, WI. It was an international competition where teams from South America, Canada, and Mexico participated. In order to enter in the final round, each team needed to pass a pre-screening process where the diameter, weight, and unit weight of the concrete ball was measured to confirm compliance. NJIT’s team easily passed the screening process, and our performance in the final round was remarkable. The concrete balling ball was able to sustain about 84,000 lbs. in load, had a deformation of about one inch in total, and an open crack of 0.5 in.; contrasting other teams whose bowling ball cracked in the middle and had no deformation what so ever. The convention was a great opportunity to also network and attend technical sessions.
