ince its founding in 1973, the College of Architecture and Design (CoAD) has continuously expanded its academic, research and technical strengths, and further broadened design education at NJIT through degree programs in architecture, urban studies (Infrastructure Planning and Urban Systems), digital design, industrial design and interior design. Situated in one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world, CoAD is an ambitious architecture and design school in which students and faculty enjoy unique opportunities to participate in a wide range of design platforms: multidisciplinary applied research and design projects across the globe. They have an opportunity to engage architecture from the micro-scale to city-scale. CoAD prepares students for a plethora of options beyond

traditional architecture and design career paths. CoAD is accredited by the National Architecture Accreditation Board (NAAB) at both the graduate level and undergraduate level, and the Council on Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) and the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) at the undergraduate level. An exceptional faculty challenges students and offers different perspectives using the latest digital tools and progressive design methodologies. The college offers bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degree programs, as well as dual degrees both within the college and with other disciplines at NJIT.

• M.Arch. and Civil Engineering (M.S.C.E., dual master’s degree program with Newark College of Engineering’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering) • M.Arch. and Master of Science in Management (M.S.Mgmt, dual master’s degree program with Martin Tuchman School of Management) • M.Arch. and Master of Business Administration (MBA, dual master’s degree program with Martin Tuchman School of Management)

College of Architecture and Design Core Graduate Programs Master of Architecture (M.Arch.) The Master of Architecture is a degree program leading toward professional licensure. The six-semester, 102-credit program begins with a required two semester core sequence covering architectural history, building systems, structures and drawing and modeling techniques. After that students can choose from a selection of research studios and elective courses in areas such as resilient design, urbanism, housing, digital fabrication, robotics or high performance building facades. A shortened program is available through advanced placement for applicants who have a B.S. or B.A. in Architecture or a related field. Master of Science in Architecture (M.S.Arch) Students can choose from either an academic or postprofessional track for this degree. The former is a 30-credit program for career specialization or preparation for advanced architectural research and scholarship, and does not include any design-studio coursework. The latter is a 30-credit design-studio program that fulfills the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards’ Intern Development Program requirements for postprofessional study. Both programs can be completed in a single academic year or pursued on a part-time basis. Available concentrations currently include sustainable design, digital design, advanced structural design, and history and theory of architecture.

Grants and Awards International award-winning architect and CoAD Associate Professor Maria Hurtado de Mendoza won an international competition launched by the National Centre for Historical Memory in association with the Colombian Society of Architects. Hurtado de Mendoza and her private practice will collaborate with the Colombian firm MGP on the architectural design of the National Museum of Memory in Bogota. This project is part of a government effort to honor the victims of the Colombian conflict. Georgeen Theodore, CoAD associate professor, leads a design team that won $125 million from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to protect Nassau County’s South Shore from storm surges and rising sea levels. As winner of the Rebuild by Design Competition, an initiative of the Hurricane Sandy Rebuilding Task Force, Theodore’s Interboro Team is designing a variety of sustainable infrastructure improvements along Nassau County’s Mill River to address the region’s vulnerabilities and help keep residents safe from flooding.

Master of Infrastructure Planning (MIP) NJIT’s Master of Infrastructure Planning is an intensive one-year, 36-credit, studio-based program that develops professionals to plan and design in the contemporary city. Students learn new and emergent techniques such as framework development, master planning, visioning, scenario planning and constituency analysis, and gain proficiency though application in design-based exercises in both local and global contexts. Projects range from designing discrete physical interventions to restructuring urban districts to reimagining mega-regions. Each year, the program focuses on a specific research topic that culminates with a student-led publication. Urban Systems (Ph.D.) The objective of this program, offered jointly by NJIT and Rutgers University, is to prepare students to acquire researchbased knowledge in urban systems and participate in the development, implementation and evaluation of policies and services for urban populations. The program core is designed as a 48-credit course sequence with three major specializations: global urban studies, urban environment and urban health.

Technology Spotlight The Digital Fabrication Lab at CoAD has been expanded with a 60kg ABB robotic arm and two new CNC machines. This will expand the possibilities of teaching cutting-edge technologies used in design, architecture and the building industry. It will also support the research in automated fabrication and assembly on construction sites and manufacturing processes of prefabricated building components conducted by Professors Martina Decker, Adam Modesitt, Taro Narahara, Gernot Riether and Augustus Wendell.
