Lighting Out For The Eastern Frontier Experiencing Asia from a Jewish perspective, from Shanghai to Mumbai.

sia might not see as much Jewish travel as Europe and the U.S., but the gap is narrowing. Every year, more Jewish and kosher resources are available at destinations across the vast continent, from the antiquities of the Caucasus antiquities to the beaches of Southeast Asia. Asia-Jewish experts praise the region’s historical lack of anti-Semitism, along with abundant vegetarian-friendly cultures that are comfortable for observant Jewish travelers. And then there’s the simple reality that Asia is a huge, diverse continent whose surprising pockets of Jewish heritage remain largely unknown to Americans. For experienced Europe travelers, Asia represents a series of frontiers. For retirees with time on their hands and a sense of adventure in their hearts, here are some of the newest ways to experience the East from a Jewish perspective:

ext year in Shanghai? Passover in China has been a surprise hit for Kesher Tours, a family-owned, New York-based kosher travel outfit. Spokesperson Tzipor Gabbay said China is the newest destination for 34-year-old Kesher, and so far, it’s among the most popular, both for the holiday and otherwise. “You know what people love? Everything is big over there,” Gabbay said with a laugh. “The rooms are big, the meals are big, everything is big.” China is more welcoming than ever for American Jewish travelers, Gabbay added. The country’s booming economy has attracted a recent influx of foreigners — including numerous American Jews, Israelis and Jewish exchange students — who, along with new Chabad houses, have enhanced local Jewish life. As the communist nation has liberalized, travelers are getting a warmer welcome, Gabbay said, with fewer regulations and more touristic (even kosher!) infrastructure. Visitors are unfailingly wowed by the forests of skyscrapers and dizzying architectural mosaic of Shanghai, whose 26 million people make it the world’s larg-

E

ach November, Long Island-based writer Rahel Musleah offers travelers a uniquely intimate glimpse into her family’s Indian-

Jewish heritage — a legacy that is slipping away, as fewer Jews remain in Musleah’s native Calcutta. Along with Joshua Shapurkar, a member of Mumbai’s Bene Israel community, Musleah leads Jewish heritage trips with Explore Jewish India. Jewish tours of the subcontinent are proliferating, but few offer the personalized take of Musleah: She leads Shabbat services at Calcutta’s Maghen David Synagogue, where her father — the descendant of Baghdadis who arrived in 1820 — was once the rabbi. The group dines in flower-scented courtyards with Jewish community members, learns about notable Indian Jews like the Sassoon family (the “Rothschilds of the East”), rides elephants and plays with peacocks. New for 2020 is a tikkun olam-themed social justice tour; highlights include the 100-member Jewish community of Ahmedabad — a UNESCO World Heritage city — and Rajasthan, a region that

includes the palaces of Jaipur. “There’s so much religion in India, and yet so little anti-Semitism,” observed Musleah. Another perk for Jewish travelers: India’s tradition of vegetarianism means that most kitchens “have never seen meat,” said Musleah (hotels typically have separate kitchens for meat and vegetable dishes). With gastronomy a highlight of Indian tourism, Musleah added, “people won’t feel they’ve missed out on cuisine just because it’s a Jewish tour.” India will always be fascinating, of course, but Musleah urges those interested in Jewish heritage to visit now — “while there’s still a chance to interact with members of the community,” she explained. “And to bring life, and music, and prayer to the beautiful and magnificent places that remain.”

‘I

f you try sometimes, you just might find / You get what you need” — to live well in retirement, that is. In a sign of the times, those septuagenarian rockers the Rolling Stones set out last month on a rescheduled stadium tour (Mick Jagger was dealing with heart problems) whose sole sponsor is the Alliance for Lifetime Income, a coalition of financial companies educating people about planning for retirement. At each venue as the Stones roll in, a bus will greet the iconic group’s baby boomer fan base with information about retirement planning. It should probably be called the Gimme (Tax) Shelter tour. The Stones seem to be in tune with the fact that only 29 percent of Americans over 50 said they feel extremely or very prepared financially for retirement and one-third said they are actually unprepared, according to a newly released poll. The survey revealed also that among those fully retired, 25 percent said they were not very or not at all prepared, while 38 percent said they felt very or extremely prepared when they retired. The survey of 1,423 adults by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research was designed

to represent the U.S. population. It was conducted Feb. 14 to 18 and has a sampling error of plus or minus 3.7 percent. Retirement experts have said the average retiree will need to replace 70 to 80 percent of his or her annual income in retirement, and Robert Pagliarini, a certified financial planner, suggested that financial planning for retirement should begin as soon as one starts to work full-time. “People in their 20s should work with a financial adviser to help them make the best financial decisions they can,” he said in an email interview. “Those wise decisions — even if they are small — can compound for the young person.” And he acknowledged that retirement planning can be intimidating. “There are a lot of moving parts, and to make matters worse, the stakes couldn’t be higher,” he said. “Individuals have worked 30 and 40 and 50 years and now want to enjoy their retirement. That’s a lot of responsibility. The best advice is to take small baby steps. This is the one thing I’ve seen that helps clients continue to make progress. If you take this big responsibility too quickly, it can quickly become overwhelming.” Selecting a financial adviser should also be done with care. Some have said choosing a retirement planner and not a financial planner is important because the latter helps you accumulate and

continued from previous page invest your money whereas a retirement advisor is trained to help you figure out how to use your money to generate a steady and reliable income in retirement. But Pagliarini, the owner of Pacifica Wealth Advisors in Irvine, Calif., cautioned that titles may be deceiving. “The problem is that anyone can call themselves a financial planner, financial adviser, retirement planner, retirement adviser, etc.,” he said. “As a result, all of these titles are useless. What you need is an

individual who is a fiduciary and who is a CFP [certified financial planner]. These two requirements will go a very long way in finding a competent advisor. I created AdvisorFit to help people interview advisors. It asks all of the questions that should be asked.” Among the questions Pagliarini suggests one ask in selecting an adviser: Are you a true fiduciary, that is, someone who is legally obligated to provide advice that is in your client’s best interests; how long have you been working as a financial adviser — a rule of thumb is at least 10,000 hours to have developed expertise in the field; have you had any regulatory or legal issues; does your firm hold my money and investments – you want to hear no because there is a significant difference between a firm that manages your investments and one that manages and holds them; do you manage retirement portfolios differently

from non-retirement portfolios; and can you help create an income strategy for retirement? Pagliarini added that he recognizes that “too often we choose to ignore the unknown and what scares us. In practice, this means we don’t examine our finances and we don’t do any planning because we are worried about what we will discover. I get that. It’s a natural response, but you have to push past this fear and dive in. You may not like what you find, but at least you will know where you stand and what you need to do.” Those who have no money worries and are considering spending their retirement years becoming involved in different charitable organizations and increasing their charitable giving might wish to get advice from the booklet “Your Jewish Philanthropy Roadmap,” produced by the Jewish Funders Network and the Jewish Communal Fund. It points out that the word “tzedakah,” often translated as “charity,” literally means “justice” and that “Jewish tradition considers giving an act of justice and our way of creating a fairer world. Giving is — for Judaism — a basic obligation, one of the main tools we have to change reality and manifest our deepest human values.” “Maybe you want to change the world or at least the small piece of it where you live,” it says. “In doing so you hope to inspire others to follow suit. … There may be a family legacy you want to preserve. Your social, cultural or political values will inevitably play a prominent role in your philanthropic decision-making. So might the causes and affiliations you are already a part of.” The booklet notes that “many philanthropists center their giving around their spiritual beliefs and/ or religious practices. They support not only their house of worship but also organizations and causes that they learn about through their community of faith. Our Jewish tradition and values speak to the importance of tzedakah, or acts of justice. The Torah tells us, ‘You shall surely open your hand to the poor and the destitute of your land.’ The Jewish community has a long tradition of establishing institutions to provide for those in need. It is worthwhile to take the opportunity to explore how your Jewish values can inform and guide your charitable giving.” Just as important as having a solid financial portfolio is the need to “strengthen one’s psychological portfolio,” according to Nancy K. Schlossberg of Sarasota, Fla., a retired professor of counseling psychology and author of the 2017 book, “Too Young to be Old” (published by the American Psychological Association). She said her research has taught her that there are various paths retirees follow, including those who embark on something very different from their life’s work; those who continually search to “find something new — trying to figure out where they belong”; the “easy gliders who wake up in the morning and just let the day unfold”; those who are “involved spectators,” such as retired politicians who remain news junkies; and those who take a time-out to get their wits about them, some of whom then become couch potatoes. “I don’t want couch potatoes to get depressed, but it just shows that there is life after work and many paths you can take,” said Schlossberg, who recently turned 90 and continues to write books in retirement. “But whatever path you take, you need a sense of purpose.” ◆

Continued from previous page healthier and, in turn, could live longer. Playing games can also improve longevity. When you swing that badminton racket, you’re not just working up a sweat — you’re having a good time and making new friends. EAT RIGHT Stick to these five rules: • Drink alcohol, but only one to two glasses a day • Eat until you’re almost full but not tired • Eat your smallest meal in the evenings • Eat mostly veggies and beans • Eat three to four ounces of meat five times a month DO GOOD Volunteer. And do it often. Not only will you be exercising, helping others and making new relationships, you’ll inadvertently increase your life expectancy. And if you’re volunteering for purely altruistic reasons, your chances of joining the centenarian club increases significantly. JOIN A COMMUNITY Human connection is imperative to your well-being. Belonging to a community can make you a healthier person who is bound to live a lot longer.

Some doctors say that it is the single most important factor when it comes to longevity. FORGET WORRY Meditation and prayer are known links to longevity. It’s no surprise that taking time out the day for some deep breaths and reflection can increase life expectancy. Studies indicate that when high levels of cortisol, a stress hormone, are released into the body, it can weaken the immune system and even create heart problems. Stay calm, and practice that “om”. ENJOY YOURSELF Though this secret is close to the first one, it encompasses a different set of values. It’s really about treating yourself. It’s okay to get a massage or eat a second cookie. What’s important is to live as though every day is a remarkable one and to approach every experience with an open mind. There’s not a single secret to this long-life thing. These are just a few ideas to help you get the most out of your life. And if you’re looking for a place where all of these seven secrets are built into your daily routine, stop by one of our communities for a visit. You can learn more about increasing your longevity and the benefits of a senior living community by visiting Brookdale.com.

GARLAND LAW OFFICES, P.A.

OFFICES IN MANALAPAN,TOMS RIVER, NJ AND NEW YORK CITY (732) 972-6700 www.njelders.com l gary@njelders.com AGING SAFELY AND WITH GRACE Gary B. Garland, Esq As an elder law attorney, I see the challenges family face, and the mistakes often made by families. For many that come to our office, they are concerned about helping their loved one find, get and pay for good care. For others, they are concerned either about how to get Medicaid or VA benefits, or how to preserve assets. To help our families, we are a Life Care Planning firm. That means instead of transactional solutions, we are RELATIONSHIP BASED. Our licensed Social Worker, Tina Ruane, has spent a career in geriatric social work. She has since become an accredited Elder Care Coordinator and assists families in navigating the healthcare maze and addressed care issues that arise. The other parts of our practice handle the legal and financial aspects of long term care in coordination with Tina. Avoiding mist akes is easy – DON’T DO ANYTHING – but that can be a mistake as well!!! Should mom transfer the house to the kids? Gift them? These are questions that come up a lot and the answers are a LOT more difficult than you might think. There are a ton of issues, and you need to know what the pros and cons of each action (or lack of action) are. For example, to get Medicaid you feel as if you have to cross a stream – but you don’t (or might know) if and where there are alligators, snakes, rocks, strong currents, and the like. Most people are concerned about getting Medicaid. But they’re not aware of the “alligators” that can bite them – like Uncle Sam (or Uncle Phil) and what taxes they may have just incurred, but they could have otherwise avoided them. Other mistakes include poor investment choices – instead of just asset allocation, retirees need to be mindful of their PRODUCT ALLOCATION – invest too aggressively and you may face significant losses – but don’t invest properly and you won’t keep up with inflation – your nest egg may become eroded when you thought you were safe. In sum, there are a lot of ways to make mistakes despite the best intentions. An experienced professional can help guide you through the Medicaid and retirement maze. Gar y B. Garland is a Certified Elder Law Attorney, and holds the designations of CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™, Accredited Estate Planner ®, Retirement Income Certified Professional®.

The decision to move a loved one into assisted living is often met with some resistance. Change can be hard for seniors, especially if they have lived in their home for a long time. It is important to approach the subject slowly and with compassion. However, once the decision is made, most are thrilled with the move for many reasons, including: 1. Safety -- With aging comes frailness, visual impairment, loss of balance and other issues that could put your loved one at risk. At Stein Assisted Living, residents and family members have peace of mind knowing that they are in a safe, loving community that puts their needs and care at the forefront. 2. Health Care – At Stein Assisted Living, monthly wellness checks, 24/7 nurses on premises, attention to good nutrition and monitoring of medications are measures taken to ensure that every resident’s medical needs are met. 3. Socialization – Quite often, seniors feel isolated within their own homes due to limited mobility. At Stein Assisted Living, residents can keep their social calendars full with an abundance of activities, trips, exercise and recreation programs, clubs, classes and opportunities for spiritual enrichment. If you would like to learn more about the benefits of assisted living, contact Stein Assisted Living at (732) 568-1155 or email info@wilfcampus.org. Shortterm stays are available. Stein Assisted Living, which includes Jaffa Gate Memory Care Neighborhood, is part of The Oscar and Ella Wilf Campus for Senior Living, which is also comprised of Stein Hospice, Wilentz Senior Residence and Wilf Transport.

’ve been preparing for retirement for some time, and I’m now days from leaving the position I’ve held for 30 years and the profession in which I’ve worked for 40 years. I’ve read many books about this “encore” period of one’s life as well as what this new life stage means and might be. This past week a friend sent me a link to an essay in The Atlantic called “Your Professional Decline Is Coming (Much) Sooner Than You Think – Here’s how to make the most of it” by Arthur C. Brooks (July, 2019). Brooks describes life’s trajectory from one’s 30s to 80s, when we peak intellectually and professionally, and when the capacities upon which we depend for work success begin to decline. He describes as well the nature of success at different ages, and what brings us the greatest happiness in each life stage. For years I’ve felt empowered, relevant and useful in my work as a congregational rabbi, Jewish, and progressive Zionist leader. I’m never bored because people fascinate me, the infinite variety of their stories moves me, ideas and notions stimulate me, community and service to others enrich me, Jewish peoplehood and the State of Israel ground me, and working closely with talented people inspires me. As a manager of creative, competent and menschy colleagues and as a participant in sacred-partner relationships with bright and committed lay leaders, I’m fortunate to feel deep satisfaction in our collective accomplishments as we’ve grown our synagogue community as a Jewish home away from home for thousands of people over the years. I anticipated leaving my position as senior rabbi when I thought I reached the peak of my intellectual and professional capacities and before my strengths began to wane as I aged (I turn 70 later this year). Like many people my age, certain abilities diminish that used to be a given in my life. For example, I often can’t recall people’s names or the titles of books and movies I’ve seen and read, even recently, and I’m not as quick a thinker as I once was. I have also become much less interested in the sport of intellectual sparring unless the discussion engages the heart and soul. I want only to do that which enhances my life and brings me meaning, joy and ease. Though I anticipate my retirement with excitement and relief, I worry still about how I will remain relevant after leaving my professional position. Arthur Brooks quotes Alex Dias Ribeiro, a former Formula 1 race-car driver, who said, “Unhappy is he who depends on success to be happy. For such a person, the end of a successful career is the end of the line. His destiny is to die of bitterness or to search for

COU RTESY OF R AB B I JOH N L. ROSOVE

‘I hope to enjoy more fully being in the moment, to turn from the rigors of the rabbinate to the refreshment of my soul that comes with living at a slower pace.’ – Rabbi John L. Rosove more success in other careers and to go on living from success to success until he falls dead. In this case, there will not be life after success.” Brooks offered an important insight: “No matter what mix of intelligence your field requires, you can always endeavor to weight your career away from innovation and toward the strengths that persist, or even increase, later in life.” Those strengths involve the spiritual and metaphysical, the capacity to be of service to others and the greater wisdom that comes out of life experience. These abilities have been at the core of my professional life for decades, and so my challenges are somewhat different than they may be for others. For me, I hope to enjoy more fully being in the moment, to turn from the rigors of the rabbinate to the refreshment of my soul that comes with living at a slower pace, to enrich my relationships with the family I love and the friendships I cherish, and to develop new skills, new interests, and new creative abilities. I’m hopeful that my retirement will be a new beginning, a re-fire-ment in my life. I’ll keep you posted. ◆ Rabbi John L. Rosove has been senior rabbi of Temple Israel in Hollywood, Calif., since 1988. Beginning this month he will be rabbi emeritus. The immediate past national chair of the Association of Reform Zionists of America, he is the author of “Why Judaism Matters — Letters of a Liberal Rabbi to his Children and the Millennial Generation” (Nashville: Jewish Lights, 2017). This essay first appeared last month in The Times of Israel.
