This summer is all about tie-dye, pastels, and pops of bright color. Here’s your guide to upcoming beachwear trends that you’re going to feel great in.

By Danielle Gomes

Sunshine, a soft ocean breeze, and beach days are ahead. Summer is here! The big question is, what are you going to wear? “This summer is all about tiedye, pretty pastels, pops of bright color, peace, and love vibes. I think everyone is still trying to get over last year,” says Cassidy McClain, Buyer for Heritage Surf & Sport and professional surfer.

Colors and Prints

There’s no question, this has been a long year but things are starting to return to normal. Fashion trends are reflecting this. No more loungewear and subtle styles, fashion-forward designs are taking the lead. People want to be seen, looking good, again. This is true for both women’s and men’s fashion. “I think everyone is tired of looking at a pile of sweats,” says Kevmo, Buyer for Heritage Surf & Sport.

So, if you haven’t jumped on the tie-dye bandwagon yet, just do it. “Tie-dye is huge this summer. We’re seeing cool tie-dye patterns and designs in both women’s and men’s beachwear. It’s just easy to wear and cool,” McClain says. You’ll find tie-dye on almost everything including bathing suits, tees, coverups, beach bags, and more. This makes it effortless to incorporate into

Other summer trends to be on the lookout for are pretty pastels from Billabong and bold color suits from Vitamin A with styles such as their sustainable Jadon suit.

Get Active

One great thing that came out of this past year was an increased interest in outdoor sports. “We saw an explosion of participation. At least triple the normal amount of people began surfing,” says Kevmo. This summer, beachwear trends are both more fashion-forward and geared towards an active lifestyle. Bathing suits are designed to be more functional and there are more board shorts with stretch and elastic-waists. In beachwear, this translates to full capsules of coordinated gear. Look for bright colors and fun patterns that extend from bathing suits to wetsuits.

When it comes to wetsuits, there are more styles than ever. Even better, there have been technological advancements in wetsuits that help to not only keep you warm but are also comfortable to wear. So, go ahead and get in the water earlier this year and look fabulous doing it. Just keep in mind, these wetsuits will go fast! “Last year, we had to deal with a major wetsuit shortage,” Kevmo says, “The entire country did, and it was from the supply chain down.”

Men’s Gear

In men’s wear, the most noticeable trend this season is a shorter inseam. “We started to see a shorter inseam in men’s board shorts a few years ago, but it’s more popular than ever now,” Kevmo says. And again, one of the biggest trends in men’s beachwear is tie-dye and color. “It looks great when you’re tan,” McClain says. Another men’s wear trend is patchwork patterns in board shorts from brands such as Hurley.

Sun Protection

Sun protection has gotten a lot more fun. From hats and sunglasses to stylish UV protective beachwear, you can look good while staying safe from the rays. “This summer is all about the bucket hat. It’s back and popular, REALLY POPULAR,” McClain emphasizes. Immensely popular in the ’90s and early 2000s, this style hat is back with a vengeance. From fashion runways to pop icons, everyone seems to be donning a bucket hat. And why not? It’s fun and functional.

If you want to stay on trend with eyewear, opt for either aviators or round profiles. “Aviators are always very popular. They look good on everyone. Though,” Kevmo says, “round silhouettes are really strong this year.” Other trends in eyewear include acetate frames and colored lenses.

Finally, the coup de grâce in sun protection is UV protective clothing. From shirts to coverups, UV clothing allows you to safely spend more time outdoors. When it comes to choosing UV wear, look for the UPF rating on the tag.

The Bag

Arguably one of the most essential items you head to the beach with, your beach bag can also be a reflection of your style. From trendy prints to completely utilitarian options, the beach bag is an extension of your lifestyle. If you want to head to the beach with your book, sunscreen, some drinks, and snacks but look good while you’re there; check out Talk of the Walk’s tapestry bag and tie-dye canvas bag. These bags are an extension of your beach wardrobe and complete your look.

However, if your needs are more functional, there are plenty of options for you too. Bags like the Rip Curl Surf Series allow you to carry everything

down to the beach and keep the sand and saltwater out of your car. Every surfer could use a “wetty bucket”. This collapsible, easy to carry, waterproof bag is purely utilitarian.

Fashion with Intention

“There’s a big movement to be more sustainable,” Kevmo explains. However, this can be misleading. Many companies say that their products are made with sustainable materials, but what they’re doing is creating their own plastic to “recycle” into a sustainable material. “Now, there’s this really strong undercurrent for basics,” Kevmo says. This movement is also referred to as slow fashion. “People are opting for purposedriven products. They’re not buying as much, but they are choosing a higher quality product at higher price points. People, and some companies, are trying to reduce their footprint,” Kevmo says. Vitamin A pioneered the first luxury, sustainable swim fabric and is fully dedicated to bringing ecofriendly, yet fashionable swimwear to the sun-soaked shores. With a variety of styles and fits for every body type, Vitamin A makes it easy to invest in high-quality gear. Items such as their Playa Shirt cover-up are easy to wear and made from biodegradable linen. “Light, loose coverups are very popular. They’re easy, pretty, and comfortable to wear when you’re salty from the ocean,” McClain says.

So, what does this mean for beachwear trends this summer? It means you should invest in the suit, coverup, and beach gear that you will want to wear for years to come. If tie-dye and pretty colors are not your thing, then by all means buy the solid black bathing suit. Ultimately, trends are taking a back seat to sustainability. This means that now is your time to be the trendsetter! Commit to the styles that you like and feel good in knowing that you’re making a difference in our environment. n
