President’s Message As the year draws to a close, I look back on a period marked by challenges and growth. While some Chamber members are dealing with the effects of a sluggish economy by tightening their belts and struggling to survive, others like Daryl Bryant, President and CEO of Hudson Horizons have been able to grow and thrive. As a Vice-President of the Chamber’s Executive Committee and founding member of our Young Professionals of North Jersey, Daryl knows the value of getting involved and building new relationships to help his business grow. Daryl’s inspirational journey has led him to great success in both his business and personal life and we are very happy to share his story in this issue. These days more than ever, businesses cannot afford to sit back and wait for customers to walk through their door. To help our members connect, we have introduced several new networking events this year where members can build relationships that will benefit their business. Our Morning Mixx networking breakfasts and Dine-Around Luncheons are free events that consistently draw large crowds and have resulted in new business and referrals for those that participate. I hope you took advantage of this opportunity at least once during the past year. Our YPNJ group continues to find new ways to connect young business professionals in North Jersey and help them on the road to becoming future business leaders in our community. With unique events like the recent Oktoberfest celebration, they are also helping to promote NJRCC and its services while raising funds for very worthwhile charitable organizations, many of which have been affected by the economic downturn. This year’s “Roche Goes to Town” program recently provided a welcome boost to the local economy. During a three week period this fall, Roche employees spent almost $40,000 in “Roche Dollars” at local merchants in Clifton. The Chamber was pleased to partner with Roche on this unique community service project designed to introduce their employees to small businesses in the communities where they live and work. Roche Pharmaceuticals has always led by example and demonstrated through words and deeds what it means to be an outstanding corporate citizen and “good neighbor” in the community. While we wrap up our schedule of events for 2011, the Chamber staff is busy planning new programs and services to meet whatever challenges the business community will face in the year ahead. If you haven’t participated in any Chamber events or committees this past year, now is a great time to make a resolution to get more involved in 2012. To all our fantastic members, I wish you a peaceful and happy holiday season and a successful New Year from everyone at NJRCC.

Building Business Success via the Internet A Win-Win for Hudson Horizons and Their Clients By Naoma Welk

T

oday, hearing about a business that is not only surviving but thriving is unusual news. One business that is doing just that is Hudson Horizons, a Web agency that designs and develops professional websites and uses Internet marketing strategies to provide quality, innovative services that help businesses grow. Hudson Horizons provides clients with Web design and development, search engine optimization (SEO), social media marketing (SMM), and pay per-click advertising (PPC) services. President and CEO, Daryl H. Bryant explains, “We are in the business of making our clients successful on the Web. Since we use the same services that we provide to our clients, they see first-hand what a successful campaign and strategy can do to generate more business online. Seventy percent of our clients come to us via the Internet. The other thirty percent are recommended to us by those who know and trust our work.” He adds, “What we do for our clients, we do for ourselves. We’ve developed a great website,

use successful Internet marketing strategies, and maximized our social media marketing and SEO efforts. It’s a great formula for success.” Bryant attributes part of their success to being in a good field right now. “Technology is continually evolving and we make sure we are ahead of the curve in terms of knowing what works on the Internet.” When the tech bubble popped in 2002, the economy was not favoring tech companies. Daryl explains, “It was difficult developing a Web company during the Internet bubble,” but he always wanted to run his own business. In February, 2003 he launched Hudson Horizons (“Hudson” is Daryl’s middle name). During the early years, in order to pay the bills, he worked as a waiter at night and developed his company during the day. Hudson Horizons’ first service was Web design. Bryant explains,“I had a designer who worked for me when I needed her. After six months, I partnered with Matt Mayernik, an independent entrepreneur, who was working on custom back-end programming and

development projects for corporate clients.” In 2003, they merged their businesses under the Hudson Horizons name and are currently operating as business partners today. They attribute their ongoing success to the fact that Daryl and Matt are both committed to the business and to expanding the company, while sharing the same vision and passion as self-made entrepreneurs. “There were a few times in the early days when we almost shut our doors; things were not so easy. Now, we are more established and for each of the past three consecutive years, we have seen a tremendous growth in sales,” smiles Bryant. They have doubled the number of employees over the last eighteen months and anticipate doubling their size once again over the next year and a half. The company’s headquarters are in Saddle Brook, New Jersey and they also have a location in Manhattan, which has enabled the company to secure more NYC business. Daryl manages company operations, marketing and sales efforts, and focuses

on quality growth and expansion. Some of the company’s past clients are Ester-C, Klorane, Solgar, Windmill Vitamins, Good N’ Natural, Cendant, Genetics Testing Laboratories, Opera Delaware, Find Any Floor, Order Windows Online, and the New York City Department of Economic Development. Some of their local clients are il Tulipano, Rare Steakhouse, Sogo, Manhattan Institute, Grey Sky Films, RWC, Nationwide Windows and Incomm Conferencing. “In addition to our Web design, development and Internet marketing services, we write articles, blogs, and develop public relations outreach programs. Our focus is to bring success to our clients through the Internet by creating campaigns that meet each of their specific needs and goals,” says Bryant. Bryant bases the company’s success on managing decisions properly and never giving up. “We have an amazing team; each person is a perfect fit for this company.” The rapidly growing Hudson Horizons team includes a Vice President of Web development, several Internet marketing strategists, director of sales, business development associates, web developers, a creative director, web designers, bloggers and an executive assistant.

New Website on the Horizon for NJRCC When the North Jersey Regional Chamber of Commerce needed an updated website, they turned to Daryl H. Bryant, who has been a Chamber member for the past four years and serves on the Executive Board of Directors. NJRCC President Gloria Martini says, “We knew that Hudson Horizons could help us gain recognition through a new state-of-the-art design for our website.

“It was difficult developing a Web company during the ’02 Internet bubble, but we became successful because we made good decisions and never gave up.” Bryant’s team is creating a social website that will serve as a resource to show the power of the Chamber and the benefits it offers. The site will continue to feature Business Matters magazine on its front page.” Bryant says they are nearing completion of the Chamber website redesign phase. “Part of the project in revamping the Chamber’s website (www.njrcc.org) is creating an entirely new approach to attract new members. We are including photos of past events, videos, testimonials, and we’re creating a blog. We are excited to be able to deliver a site that will benefit both the Chamber and its members.” The team at Hudson Horizons is enhancing the site to include SEO, which means that the site has improved visibility in the organic search results without paid placement. The higher the website is ranked on the search results pages and the more a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it receives from the search engine’s users. When people are looking for Chambers in New Jersey, the NJRCC website will rank higher on Google, Yahoo and Bing. Bryant graduated from Montclair State University with a degree in computer science and mathematics. Right out of college, he joined a software company in New York City, which focused on developing proprietary user-sensing technology that provided training and statistical analysis to large-scale corporate clients. At this first job, Daryl “cut his teeth” in the Internet-startup business world, learned how to operate a company and became immersed in how to offer professional services for an array of clients. “I am proud to say that Hudson Horizons has received several national awards and recognitions,” smiles

Daryl. “In 2011, Crain’s New York B2B magazine listed us as a top national Integrated Agency. We have also been named Best Web Design Agency and ranked #1 Web Development Company in the Nation by Best Web Design Agencies for two years running. This year TopSEO’s named Hudson Horizons as a top agency and ranked us in the top 25 Search Engine Optimization, Social Media Marketing and Pay-per-Click Management agencies in the nation.” Daryl explains, “We deliver services to help our clients maintain their specific needs. Our job is to help them be successful online and make sure that with Hudson Horizons, they receive an excellent return on their investment. Each one of our clients has

From cleats to taps Growing up as an active, enthusiastic boy in Byram Township, NJ, Daryl enjoyed football, basketball, karate, Jiu-Jitsu and even tap dancing. In his book, MS - Living Symptom Free, he writes, “I loved being active and playing sports. It didn’t matter to me if the game was played alone or with a team.” Daryl continued his active lifestyle into his college and early adult years. When he was 24-years old, Daryl experienced a sudden deterioration in his vision. Within a couple of weeks, his eyesight was back to normal, so he ignored the event. What he did not know, however, was that this was his first symptom of Multiple Sclerosis (MS), a progressive auto-immune disease that attacks the nervous system and damages the myelin sheath that protects the nerve cells. In most instances those who are diagnosed with MS range in age from 20 and 40 and women are more likely to be diagnosed than men.

Living a Healthy Life A Guide to Surviving MS

n his new book, MS – Living Symptom Free, Daryl H. Bryant describes his journey through diagnosis, denial, acceptance, personal research and finding a lifestyle that enables him to live totally symptom-free with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Daryl discusses his experiences with an array of conventional medicines, diets, vitamins and supplements, exercise and activities that he tried. Eventually, he found a program that enabled him to live a healthy life while controlling, reducing and eliminating the symptoms of MS.

Denial is not just a river in Egypt Following his diagnosis in 2003, Daryl (then 25 years old) chose to avoid the prescribed drug treatment, which he explains that in retrospect he understands he was having a difficult time coming to terms with MS. It took him two years before he agreed to try a recommended injectable drug. As part of his treatment therapy, Daryl researched various treatment platforms, ways of eating that would best serve him and a workable, beneficial exercise regimen. In MS – Living Symptom Free, Daryl takes readers on his personal journey of being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and finding a healthy lifestyle that enables him to live a full life. Bryant’s book includes an Appendix of recipes that help him manage his health. Even readers in perfect health will enjoy browsing through his tasty recipes such as Roasted Tomato Soup, Chipotle Crusted Pork Tenderloin, Maple Salmon and Flourless and Sugar-Free Chocolate Cake. Building a future In tandem with his diagnosis, over the last ten years, Bryant built an award-winning, nationally recognized Web design and Internet marketing agency which continues to thrive. He became a husband to Shannon and most recently, father to Jack Hudson Bryant. To learn more about MS or if you know of someone who has been diagnosed with MS, this is a must-read. Communication is Key I hope you are as pleased as I am with the new design of this current issue. We are always looking to evolve and improve the magazine so that you find it interesting, easy to read and a valuable tool for your business. Please check out our expanded listings in the Professional Resource Directory. This directory serves as an economical way to keep your name in front of readers so that when they need the kind of service you provide, they will reach out to your business.

Not only does this magazine reach senior executives in NJRCC member companies, the cover business typically takes three to five hundred copies to use in their own marketing efforts, each issue appears on the NJRCC web site which receives 18,000+ hits each month and we have an independent list of subscribers who look forward to reading each issue. The pass-along rate is about 30%. If you have any suggestions or topics you wish to read about in Business Matters, I would love to hear from you. Please forward your comments to me at Naomawelk@aol.com. Last month I commented on how much I enjoyed working with NJRCC member Ed Quinn of Prestige Auctions. This month I worked with another Chamber member, Julian Carrera, Verizon Wireless Zone in Clifton. The store may look like other Verizon Wireless Zones, but when you meet with Julian and his staff, you will find that shopping for cell phones and accessories is a very different experience. First, the team asks you about your cell phone concerns and then they show you an array of options

that might work for you. When I met with Julian, he showed me the Square Credit Card Reader that enables users to accept credit cards on their phones. With the new card reader, my small business, Welk Ink, will be able to accept credit cards. Julian explained, “Our goal is to help businesses with their communications issues, by delivering the best service and cell phone options that suit our customers’ businesses. This includes explaining new technology and navigating telephone bills to see if we can help Verizon customers take advantage of any new cost-savings programs.” One of Julian’s future projects is to host informative evening seminars in his store to help users take advantage of all the features cell phone technology has to offer. When you need cell phone solutions, visit of Julian Carrera at Verizon.

or the second consecutive year, Roche, in partnership with the North Jersey Regional Chamber of Commerce (NJRCC) and two other Nutley and Clifton organizations sponsored the community initiative, “Roche Goes to Town”. The program began September 19 and concluded October 9. Gloria Martini, NJRCC President said, “It’s a win-win for everyone. Roche provided local full- and part-time New Jersey employees with $25 in ‘Roche Dollars’ to spend at participating businesses during the three-week program. The program is an opportunity for local small businesses to showcase their services and gain new patrons.” At the end of the shopping period, Roche reimbursed businesses with US currency. This year, Roche employees spent nearly $40,000 in ‘Roche Dollars’ at small businesses during the program. Patricia Hughes, Roche Director of Corporate Relations

and Contributions said, “This year we secured participation from 145 local small businesses in Nutley and Clifton and are very grateful to have the continuing support of the local communities.” Last year the program led to an overall injection of $65,000 into the Nutley and Clifton economies and will reach a similar level this year. Martini adds, “At a time when ‘shop locally’ is a recurring theme, the “Roche Goes to Town” program goes a long way to introduce its employees to local small businesses. We are pleased to support Roche’s efforts.” business matters | December 2011 5

Don’t Let the “Gottas” Determine Your Risk

f you are a business owner, you understand better than anyone the meaning of “risk.” The key is to understand how much risk you can afford, and when or where is the right place to take risk.

Insurance coverage can be a risk-taker’s best friend. It allows you to use your entrepreneur’s judgment to decide which business risks are worthy and which are not, by using your properly designed insurance program as your safety net when things go wrong. Good insurance can handle those unexpected risks that come as “Acts of God” (weather, sickness or other types of claims that are often beyond your control), as well as those risks, which, unfortunately, have become all too expected, such as liability or workers compensation claims against your business. Target your needs. Although many types of insurance policies and packages available to small businesses today are so extensive that it may seem you can cover just about anything that can go wrong, the most sensible long-term approach is to leverage your premium dollars by focusing on coverage in areas most likely to cause your particular business the most pain. Even though such a focus may seem obvious, it often gets overlooked or ignored by business owners who are mainly looking for insurance to meet requirements set upon them by others—such as banks, lienholders, landlords

or government regulators. While these are important considerations, and cannot be ignored, don’t let the “gottas” become your entire insurance program. Personalize it. After all, it’s YOU who is taking risks to bolster your business, not the landlord or the government. You have no choice about meeting such requirements, but be smart. Consider further options you may need regardless of the demands of others. Let’s look at a few examples: If your business is your family’s sole or main source of income, it makes more sense to spend some premium dollars on a life insurance policy that guarantees to provide income if events conspire to take you out of the picture. Likewise, if your business survival—at least in the short term—is dependent upon the work of a key employee, then it would be well worth your time to: (1) explore buying a life (or disability) insurance policy for your business on that key person, (2) provide a financial buffer in the event of that person’s death until you can find another equally talented individual, or (3) reorganize your business. Be specific. Do you need special computer coverage for all of the technology your business may be so dependent upon? While standard property insurance forms may provide basic coverage by treating these items like any other part of the building or contents, there are many issues unique to high tech equipment that only a specialized form of insurance will address. Such issues include: computer viruses; equipment valuations at time of loss (since computers, like new cars, lose a lot of their value within six months of purchase); business income losses due to being down for an extended period of time; electronic forgeries and theft; liability arising from alleged breaches of customer privacy; and many others. Cover all your bases. Although

your building may be covered for the amount required by the mortgage holder or even what you paid for it, what would it really cost to rebuild it from the ground up following a major disaster? Are there special design issues that may raise the building costs? Are there any building ordinances (such as requiring all new buildings of your type to have sprinkler systems) that will significantly increase your rebuilding estimates? If your building was “grandfathered” under your community’s current building restrictions, will you even be allowed to rebuild at your current location? (Have you checked your zoning ordinances lately?) Let’s look at another worst-case scenario: If your business is unable to operate due to extensive damages, what amount of income will you lose during the time it takes to make sufficient repairs to open the doors again? Or would your choice be to reopen as quickly as possible at another location? The “hurry up” expense of making the move, installing the necessary equipment and notifying your current clients may prove to be a significant financial burden. Make sure to cover all your bases. Ask yourself: Are the liability limits high enough to meet your landlord’s requirements or are they automatically included with your business’ insurance package? Consider this: how often do you read about some new wave of multi-million dollar lawsuits against businesses—both big and small—in your newspaper. We can help you understand what your company needs. erkeley College has been selected as a 2012 Military Friendly School by G.I. Jobs, a magazine for military personnel who are transitioning into civilian life. The list honors colleges, universities and trade schools that do the most to embrace American’s servicemen and veterans as students. The 2012 list of Military Friendly Schools was compiled through research and a datadriven survey of more than 8,000 schools nationwide. Selected institutions offer benefits such as military scholarships and discounts, veterans’ clubs, and a full-time staff dedicated to veterans’ affairs. Feedback from the survey provides prospective military students with insight into the student veteran experience at a particular institution

based on reviews from current students. “It is an honor to receive this award for the third consecutive year,” said Richard E. Robitaille, EdD, Berkeley College Assistant Vice President of Military and Veterans Affairs. “The College participates in the Yellow Ribbon Program under the G.I. Bill, and collaborates on educational ventures with the National Guard, the Air Force, the GoArmyEd distance learning program, and the Navy College Program Distance Learning Partnership. We constantly strive to expand the programs and services offered to our 400 military and veteran students.” “The Military Friendly Schools list is the go-to resource for prospective student veterans searching for schools that provide

the right overall experience,” said Michael Dakduk, Executive Director for the Student Veterans of America.

Our Fictional Char act er Katie has a sweet tooth. She comes from a long line of great, creative cooks. One of her favorite recipes is for a chocolate sauce that her Grandma Lizzie created in her kitchen that was made from only the freshest, natural ingredients. Years ago, Grandma Lizzie had explained “Whenever I make the sauce, I always quadruple the recipe so I have jars available for family and friends.” For more than thirty years, Lizzie had entered her sauce into every area cooking contest around. To the consternation of other entrants, she typically ran away with first prize. “Come on over and I’ll show you my blue ribbons,” Lizzy would smile. No one could match the velvety smooth texture and genuine chocolate-y taste of Lizzie’s Chocolate Sauce and she wasn’t about to share her secret recipe with anyone… except Katie. Katie was her grandmother’s favorite grandchild and from the time Katie could stand on a chair and reach the counter, she helped Grandma Lizzie make the special dessert sauce. Years later, Katie decided to build a business around the family’s recipe and eventually market it to stores across the country. “If we enjoy this dessert sauce so much, perhaps others will like it, too,” said Katie. With lots of elbow grease, a loan from 10

Grandma Lizzie herself and support from family and friends, jars of Lizzie’s Chocolate Sauce were soon rolling off the assembly line and onto retailer’s shelves. Area specialty stores were selling the sauce at a record rate and Katie was ready to expand her reach via the internet. She knew she needed a killer site. Since she was busy being everything from CEO to Chief Bottle Washer, an effective web site was the best way for her to reach potential customers across the country. Katie researched internet web designers, found Hudson Horizons and liked what she read. She spoke with Daryl Bryanthis easy manner and clear understanding of her needs convinced Katie to hire his firm. “I wanted a site that could almost deliver the sauce’s aroma,” says Katie. She knew that once customers tasted Lizzie’s Chocolate Sauce they would be hooked for life. For inspiration, Katie sent several jars of Lizzie’s Chocolate Sauce to Hudson Horizons and it worked! Daryl and his team built a six-page site that included lip-licking descriptions of Lizzie’s Chocolate Sauce, easy to complete on-line order forms, specific locations where the sauce could be purchased, a folksy description of the family’s background and a history of the sauce, as well as a page where customers could post comments.

A few months after the new site was launched, orders for the dessert sauce went through the roof and Katie had to hire a night shift to meet demand. “Without my new professional site, I am sure that I wouldn’t be as successful as I am today,” explains Katie. “In addition, just think of all those customers who would be missing out on their new favorite dessert sauce. The site has performed much better than expected and is responsible for the new, rapid growth of my business.” In addition to telling everyone about the web design firm that helped make her wishes come true, she put Hudson Horizons on a monthly schedule for delivery of Lizzie’s Chocolate Sauce and is in the process of experimenting with a line of new dessert sauces.

Data Thieves: A Growing Threat Which May be Far More Damaging than a Fire Many organizations view data theft as a crime that will never happen to their business, or they may say, “My business is too small to have information of value to data thieves.” If this is how you view your computer systems, then it is time to take a closer look at your data security. A data breach is a crime that can severely impact customer relationships, hurt the company image and negatively impact your bottom line. It can be very costly to a business in terms of expenses relating to notifying those affected by the breach, the cost of corrective action, loss of customers, and the cost of possible litigation. Data thieves target many types of organizations; accounting organizations, retailers, medical practices, insurers, and financial organizations are all high value targets. The reality is that any organization that stores customer, employee, credit card, payroll

and banking information within their systems has information that needs to be protected. How can you protect your organization? A data breach may be the result of your system being hacked or it may be the result of lost or stolen passwords, computer viruses, theft by employees, or even physical theft of computers, notebooks, smart phones and drives. There is not one simple answer to effectively protect your company’s information from threats but rather a series of actions. These include hardware, software, and company practices that should be reviewed periodically to protect your company on all battle fronts. The best way to protect your information is to work with an industry professional who can take a global look at your computer network and company practices to implement and maintain solutions that fully protect your company information.

Disaster Recovery Planning By Jhovanny Rodriguez other Nature’s delivery of a very early snowstorm this October left hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses without electricity, phone service and/or heat for an extended period of time. Some were without power for more than a week. Certainly if a home is without power, it’s a severe inconvenience but if a business is powerless, it’s a true disaster. As many found out this fall, businesses that cannot send or receive emails or access the internet are unable to operate and lose money every day. Although we can’t ensure this kind of weather-induced emergency will never happen again, we do have some tips to help you prepare your small business for survival in the face of a future disaster.

M

• If you have not already done so, adopt an electronic data back-up service • Make sure your back-up solution is capable of storing your information both on-site and off-site •

Ensure that your company’s IT department has images of all your systems. Your back-up and disaster recovery is even better if this process is automated, scheduled and is part of your ongoing solution

Develop a separate Business Email Continuity solution that gives you access to your company’s emails if a server is down, if the internet is down and/or in the event of a power outage

• Create and distribute written procedures so that your staff knows what to do in case of an emergency Disaster Recovery Planning is not just for the IT Department. Cover your bases by including the following emergency procedures: •

A third party communication vendor who is capable of contacting all of your employees by cell phone, SMS or land line

• An up-to-date employee phone chain for telephone communications • IT Processes for Systems Recovery Synetek Solutions is offering Chamber members a complimentary Disaster Recovery Preparedness Assessment. The

Most Critical Blocks

to your Success…

How to Overcome Them and Get What You Want and Deserve Not achieving what you want in life? One or more of these four blocks may be keeping you stuck. Gremlin, Assumptions, Interpretations, and Limiting Beliefs (GAIL) are blocks that may prevent you from achieving what your goals. Let’s define each one: GREMLIN - that little voice that whispers in your ear that you’re not good enough, or smart enough, or pretty enough, or talented enough. ASSUMPTIONS - expectations that just because something has happened in the past, it will happen again. INTERPRETATIONS - opinions and judgments that you create about an event, situation, person, or experience and believe to be true. LIMITING BELIEFS - things that you accept about life, yourself, your world, or the people in it, that limit you in some way. At various times, all of us are impeded by one or more of these blocks, perhaps without even being aware of them. A conscious awareness that these blocks may be affecting our performance and behavior is the first step in conquering them.

GREMLIN The gremlin is your inner critic. It’s that little self-deprecating voice that tells you not to try, never take a risk, always take the safe road and to compromise your life by playing small. Your gremlin’s

warnings are that you’re just not good enough to reach the summit of success. It can be extremely debilitating for an entire lifetime if you don’t recognize it and take steps to overcome it. Your gremlin thinks it is protecting you from embarrassment or failure by keeping you from trying something new and taking a chance. What are some typical gremlin statements? Do any of these sound familiar? I’m not effective. I’m not smart enough to really do this job right. I don’t have enough experience. I’m not attractive enough. I don’t deserve great success. I don’t have what it takes. I never get things done on time. I never________, or I always________. Being aware of your gremlin is the first step towards lessening its power. To overcome your gremlin, determine its origin. Perhaps you heard something said to you by a school teacher, a sibling, a boss, or even a parent. The gremlin is highly personal and creates fears that stop you from even attempting to achieve something you want, to try something different, or to take any kind of risk at all that challenges your gremlin’s insidious voice. You can conquer your gremlin by tracing it back to its origin and challenge its original premise. Look at past situations where you have been able to overcome its hold on you

and create current situations where you can take control and remove its power. In the upcoming issues: We will discuss Assumptions, Interpretations and Limiting Beliefs.
