eVry University has grown and evolved significantly since opening its first Garden State location in Union, New Jersey in 1969. Those who remember the original “DeVry Technical Institute,” a private career school devoted exclusively to training electronics technicians, would barely recognize the DeVry University of 2012. Today, DeVry has three modern campuses in New Jersey. The flagship campus, which moved from Union to Woodbridge in the early 1970’s and then to the Route One Technology Corridor in North Brunswick in the mid-1990’s, is now complemented by two branch campuses - one in Paramus and another in Cherry Hill. Approximately two thousand undergraduate and graduate students in New Jersey pursue associate, bachelor’s and master’s degree programs that prepare them for high-demand occupations in technology, management and healthcare. The DeVry organization traces its roots to 1931 in Chicago, Illinois, where Dr. Herman DeVry, a noted inventor and instructional technology pioneer, established the De Forest Training School, named after his friend and colleague Dr. Lee De Forest. As a founding father of the nascent field of electronics, Dr. DeVry foresaw that legions of skilled workers would be needed to design, troubleshoot and repair the exciting new devices that were being spawned by the new technologies of the day. His vision proved to be on target, and his tiny school in downtown Chicago, later renamed DeVry Institute of Technology, grew exponentially and changed as well. Eighty-one years after its founding, DeVry University is one of the largest degree-granting higher education systems in North America. Nearly 93,000 students are enrolled at its more than 95 locations in 26 states and Canada, as well as through DeVry University’s online delivery platform. DeVry University’s academic structure includes five colleges that house its growing list of degree programs, including the Colleges of Business & Management, Engineering & Information Sciences, Health Sciences, Liberal Arts & Sciences and Media Arts & Technology. The mission of DeVry University is to foster student learning through high-quality, career-oriented education, integrating technology, science, business and the arts. The university delivers practitioner-oriented undergraduate and graduate programs onsite and online to meet the needs of a diverse and geographically dispersed student population. Central to the mission is a strategic focus on continuously improving academic quality. One important indicator of academic quality is an institution’s accreditation status. DeVry University is institutionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Another critical measure of quality is the professionalism and commitment of the faculty. Faculty members at DeVry University hold appropriate advanced degrees in their field of specialization, bring both theoretical and experiential

Students from all walks of life choose DeVry University to pursue their educational and career dreams. Recent high school graduates, transfer students, active-duty military and veterans, working adults and workers in transition are all attracted by DeVry’s flexible, year-round class schedules that permit accelerated degree completion and combine the convenience of online learning options with the personal attention of on-campus instruction. Outside of the classroom, students have access to Student Central, an innovative one-stop solution center for all of their advisement needs. Each student is assigned a “success team,” consisting of a student success coach (academic advisor) and a student finance consultant. The team works collaboratively to ensure that the student receives world-class advisement service from matriculation through graduation. DeVry University also provides comprehensive

Since 1975, 258,361 undergraduate students system-wide have graduated from DeVry University. Of graduates in the active job market, 90.1% were employed in careerrelated positions within six months of graduation. And for the last 10 years, DeVry University graduates have worked at 96 of the Fortune 100 companies*. DeVry is especially proud of its record of civic engagement. DeVry University’s students, alumni and employees actively partner with business and community organizations. In
New Jersey, DeVry has been recognized by the New Jersey Technology Council for excellence in technology education. The University was also honored by the Central Jersey Community Development Corporation for excellence in community service. Most recently, DeVry University became a founding member of New Jersey Campus Compact. Campus Compact promotes public and community service that develops students’ citizenship skills, helps campuses forge effective community partnerships, and provides resources and training for faculty seeking to integrate civic and communitybased learning into the curriculum. Finally, DeVry University hosts an annual Her World event, an interactive workshop that empowers high school women to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. So much has changed at DeVry over time, but the University’s core values and competencies have displayed remarkable constancy. DeVry University remains a careerfocused institution of higher education committed to empowering its students, producing talented graduates to meet the needs of employers, and enhancing the quality of life in our communities. *DeVry University graduates system-wide, from February 2001 to October 2010 in the active job market. Case Marketing a Women’s Health Product Study in a Difficult Environment
I
n 2008, Rachel Braun Scherl and Mary Wallace Jaensch founded Semprae Laboratories, Inc. (headquartered in Saddle Brook, NJ) and took on the challenge of taking a product to market that was looking for its audience in an undeveloped category. Prior to Scherl and Jaensch taking over, the product’s original marketers had found little success in gaining enough traction in retail environments for Zestra® Essential Arousal Oils™, a clinically proven women’s sexual health product.
The Principals Before they created Semprae, Jaensch (Chief Executive Officer) and Scherl (President) successfully ran The Jannick Group LLC/SPARK Solutions for Growth, a marketing company designed to provide strategies, marketing advice and expertise to Fortune 100 Rachel Braun Scherl Mary Wallace Jaensch companies. Jaensch noted that while at The Jannick Group, they learned how women’s lives were changing, the kinds of health issues they were experiencing as well as their needs in a variety of areas. Scherl and Jaensch’s extensive backgrounds in packaged goods training, combined with their extensive knowledge of the pharmaceutical business, made them feel uniquely qualified to successfully market Zestra to women. The Product Clinical studies show that women of all ages and life stages, including those who had survived cancer and are living with other health issues, felt that Zestra improved their sexual experiences. Zestra is the first product established in clinical trials to heighten a woman’s sensitivity to touch and sexual satisfaction. Zestra is a safe, patented blend of botanical oils and extracts that is available over-the-counter. Topically-applied, Zestra is hormone-free, has no known drug interactions and is classified as a cosmetic. Clinical Trials Despite the fact that Zestra’s regulatory status as a cosmetic did not require clinical studies, Semprae Laboratories did conduct tests for the efficacy of Zestra to ensure optimal results and to confirm its effectiveness on women with a wide range of concerns and health histories. QualiLife Pharmaceuticals, Inc. conducted the study and the results were reported by Ferguson, David M. et al, Randomized, Placebo-Controlled, Double Blind, Crossover Design Trial of the Efficacy and Safety of Zestra for Women in Women With and Without Female Sexual Arousal Disorder. Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy (2003:29(s):33-44). The study concluded that Zestra provides significant improvements in desire, arousal and satisfaction for a broadly generalized group of women with sexual difficulties. 4

Retail Launch Scherl explains, “We felt that the original, traditional retail launch had been problematic in terms of the business model and the necessary capital, but that the product really worked. We wanted to take on the challenge of marketing Zestra. We believed in the product and we knew that so many women who have tried Zestra have experienced fantastic results. We both feel it’s exhilarating to be able to help women.” Direct-Response Marketing Scherl and Jaensch focused on Direct-Response (DR) marketing, a form of marketing designed to solicit a direct response from consumers. Since the customer responds to the marketer directly, DR leads to instant feedback and the results can be tracked and measured. One common type of DR marketing is the infomercial (as in “Set It and Forget It.”) While at the Jannick Group, the duo explored the Proactiv Solution business model to provide insights to their skin care client’s global business. They found that Zestra has many similar marketing attributes of Proactiv in terms of what made it a successful DR-driven business. In addition, estimates suggest that 50% of men’s sexual dysfunction drugs were purchased online, so the same model would be a perfect fit for the Zestra DR campaign. Early on, they concluded that DR and the Internet would be the most practical ways to test the market. Television and Internet outlets During spring and summer of 2009, Semprae focused on Direct Response Television (DRTV) as a way to optimize the media plan. Things were going well once they identified the best working marketing channels. But then they reached an obstacle in the form of gaining clearance for their DRTV spots.“With claims around arousal, desire and satisfaction for women,” says Jaensch “we began to have trouble getting our spots cleared by many cable networks. There was no nudity, nothing risqué in the spots, yet a majority of networks would not accept them.” The company was having success online when they purchased branded keywords, but that strategy did not have the same reach or impact. In addition, search results for those key words often led browsers to non-related internet sites that were too medical or skewed to the other end of the spectrum. Finding ways to get exposure is an ongoing challenge. Scherl explains, “We had an opportunity to take a safe, topically applied, effective product to market – one that worked for a wide range of women, yet we can’t talk about it. It feels like we have the best-kept secret, but we want to spread the word.”
Public Relations Campaign To drive the business, the team launched a huge PR campaign by reaching out to newspaper and TV outlets, sharing the news that Zestra was being denied exposure. In September 2010, Zestra was covered in the New York Times and featured on “The View.” Over the next few weeks, Scherl and Jaensch appeared on “Nightline” and they received coverage in USA Today.com as well as a host of large regional newspapers. Zestra was also covered on The Dr. Oz show, The Today Show, Forbes.com, Rachael Ray, Tyra, The Doctors, Parenting, Lifescript, Your Tango and Blisstree.com. While that media exposure improved the knowledge of their customer base and helped sales, Zestra still had clearance issues. Approved ads on Facebook were later taken down and although they worked with WebMD on an ad that met the site’s specifications, in the end, WebMD refused to clear it. They also worked with NASCAR and TMZ without success. Last year the team designed a television commercial that was able to gain clearance, but Scherl says, “The communication was too vague and uninformative to drive purchase.” Physician Endorsements Some physicians who treat cancer survivors suggest that their patients should just be happy to be alive. However, that doesn’t address a survivor’s quality of life. Dr. Michael Kyrchman, an OB/GYN and Certified Sexual Counselor, is Executive Director of the Southern California Center for Sexual Health and Survivorship Medicine. He has been recommending Zestra to his female patients, many of them cancer survivors, for years even before Scherl and Jaensch became involved. He says, “I suggest Zestra to many of my patients who suffer from a chronic medical disease that impacts their ability to function sexually as well as to women who have survived breast cancer. Studies reveal that good sex helps men and women experience better overall health and wellness; people live longer and experience less chronic illness.” He adds, “Zestra has helped women who have diabetes, depression and heart disease.” Empowering women Kyrchman explains that women are suffering in silence; this is an issue that needs to be addressed. “After all,” he says, “we are in an age where we want to empower our wives, sisters and daughters to be educated, to vote and to be empowered in the work place. We need to put them on equal footing for sexual health and vitality.” Zestra is available at www.Zestra.com and at select leading retailers including Wal-Mart, Kmart, Meijer and Rite Aid. For more information about Zestra, visit www.Zestra.com. CONTACT: Rachel Braun Scherl President, Semprae Laboratories, Inc. Tel: 973.387.1720 • rbscherl@semprae.com

These clinical trials documented Zestra’s effectiveness for a wide array of women.
In addition to stories from women who have felt the Zestra Rush™, Zestra is widely recommended by doctors and other women’s healthcare professionals.

“Green” News, Healthy Dining & Convenient Workouts at Styertowne
I
n just the first few months of 2012, Styertowne Shopping Center has already seen several changes. In addition to “going green”, a new restaurant opened and an existing fitness center has taken on more space. Solar Project In January, the Center’s solar project was completed. Three hundred and twenty-five solar panels were installed on the roof to provide energy to the elevator and front center canopy lights. Although solar power is a relatively new energy source, the advantages of solar power make it one of the most important resources source available now and in the future. Solar power is a renewable resource, is non-polluting and uses free energy and heat from the sun. Solar cells require very little maintenance and they can last a lifetime. Muscle Maker Grill Styertowne shoppers are invited to visit the new Muscle Maker Grill, to enjoy the same convenience of fast food without the unwanted fats, oils and carbohydrates. Muscle Maker Grill uses only lean chicken breast, USDA steak, turkey meat and turkey bacon. The menu features whole wheat pasta, whole wheat bread and brown rice. They use no-fat sour cream, low fat cheeses, fatfree and low-carb salad dressings, no-cream vodka sauces. Their
“famous signature sauce” is zero carb. Sauces and dressings are 100% gluten free and have zero trans-fat. Rod Silva founded Muscle Maker Grill in 1995 with the goal of offering a nutritious alternative to fast food restaurants. The restaurant became a franchise in 2007. Muscle Maker Grill is another reason to visit Styertowne Shopping Center. Lucille Roberts Expands The already well-known Lucille Roberts location has expanded its space in order to accommodate the increasing demand for classes and personal training. Lucille Roberts has made a name for itself as one of the largest women’s health club organizations in America. The health clubs offer programs for weight loss, fitness classes and in-depth workouts. To best serve their customers, Lucille Roberts offers the most advanced cardio and fitness equipment and certified fitness trainers in the area. In order to help women manage motherhood and fitness, Lucille Roberts provides day care facilities. The convenient location of Lucille Roberts at Styertowne Shopping Center helps women make fitness and well-being part of their ongoing lifestyle.

Our Fictional Char act er After four years in the Army, which included two tours of duty in the Middle East, Sam returned to his parents’ home. Sam joined the Army as soon as he graduated from high school: “I knew this would give me time to think about what kind of a career I wanted and also, it was something I could do for my country.” Dotty and Dan, Sam’s parents were petrified about him joining any branch of the military in this time of war. As luck would have it, Sam was twice deployed to Afghanistan, but fortunately, he returned mentally and physically intact. “We are thrilled to have ‘our baby boy’ back,” smiles Dotty. “Sammy is our only child and I can’t even imagine how we’d feel if something happened to him. Now that he’s home, I can’t stop smiling.” After a month Dan put his foot down: “I wasn’t about to watch Sam become a lounge lizard. He had to get an education, get a job, or both.” During his Army stint, Sam found he enjoyed mechanical and engineering projects and decided to go for a degree in those areas. Sam checked out several area schools and found that the best match for him was DeVry University. He says,“I learned that the faculty is dedicated to both academics and career development. Particularly in this economy, I want to be prepared to get a job in my field. I was very happy to learn that the school’s degree programs match current market needs so that I will be employable when I graduate. Did you know that in the last 10 years DeVry grads have worked at 96 of the top Fortune 100 companies?* Impressive, right?” The fact that Sam can study online, on campus or both, makes it possible for him to work and craft a schedule that fits his needs.
After careful consideration,Sam,who decided to pursue a four-year degree in the College of Engineering & Information Sciences, says “The curriculum is really interesting and I am looking forward to learning everything I can.” Sam can earn a bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering Technology, Computer Engineering Technology or Computer Information Systems. He can specialize in Business/Management, Computer Forensics, Database Management, Enterprise Computing, Health Information Systems, Information Systems Security, Systems Analysis & Integration, Web Development & Administration, Web Game Programming or Renewable Energy. When Sam learned that DeVry has more than 90 locations nationwide, he reached out to several of his Army buddies to recommend they check out DeVry. “I know
many of them are at loose ends, and DeVry is a perfect fit.” In addition to associate degree programs in Electronics & Computer Technology and Network Systems Administration, DeVry also offers bachelor’s degree programs in the College of Business and Management, the the College of Health Sciences, the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences and the College of Media Arts & Technology. Sam says, “It’s a great program and I am enjoying my course work...so much so that I’m already thinking of graduate school.” Dotty and Dan are very pleased that Sam decided to pursue an education and build a career that he will enjoy. “Most of all,” says Dan, “I’m glad to have him off our couch.” *2011 Fortune 500 Ranking; DeVry student-reported data.

Tech TIPS
The Cloud Today we are hearing a lot of claims about Cloud computing and you may be asking, “Can Cloud computing benefit my business?” The answer is not a simple “yes” or “no.” In general, Cloud computing can provide benefits to many (but not all) businesses. What is Cloud computing anyway? Cloud computing is a term that refers to software and services provided through the Internet. The Cloud offers various services, such as e-mail, word processing, spreadsheets, accounting, anti-virus, data storage and backups.
David Rosa, Managing Partner Rosa and Castan Associates Technology Management Consulting Fairfield, NJ 07004 973.830.8104
Does the Cloud change how we work with computers? Yes. Typically, businesses purchase and install software on their computers, which is available for employees to use as long as they have access to that company’s computer. Employee work files are stored either on the employee’s computer or the company network. With the Cloud, a business does not actually purchase the software; instead, it pays a much smaller monthly access fee to use the Cloud application. Since the application is run on-line through a web browser, the software can be accessed from any computer with an Internet connection. In addition, the Cloud lets you save your files on-line so that both your program and data are saved on the Cloud. With the Cloud you can: • Avoid purchasing, installing and managing software updates
Member News: Berkeley College Raises More than $80,000 for Charity One way Berkeley College celebrated its 80th Anniversary in 2011 was to raise monies for charity. Through Berkeley Cares, the committee raised more than $80,000 to support charities that serve local communities in the areas of food, shelter, health, and student success. Organizations that received $1,000 or more include: the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, the American Diabetes Association, the American Red Cross, Fashion for Autism, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Passaic and Paterson, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, the Food Bank of New York, the Japan Relief Fund,
the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society the March of Dimes, and Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Columbia Bank Employees Volunteer Columbia Bank employees recently volunteered to paint several hallways at the Phoenix Center, a Nutley-based school that provides educational and therapeutic services to children with disabilities. Columbia Bank supports many local projects, especially those that promote affordable housing, family assistance and neighborhood pride. The Bank is also a regular sponsor of local Habitat for Humanity affordable housing projects.
• Eliminate or reduce the need to purchase and maintain a network server for your in-house network • Minimize the impact of stolen or broken computers. In the event of a crash, you simply move to another computer to access to your software and data • Easily integrate with most smart phones Are there limitations to the Cloud? In order to gain access to your applications, you must have an active Internet connection. Additionally, customizing Cloud versions of software may be limited. Although Cloud applications are very secure, some still have questions about Cloud security. Generally, however, major threats to data come from within an organization, not from the Cloud. How do I get started using Cloud applications? Determine what applications (e-mail, business applications, etc.) you need to run and for how many users. List your current costs for maintaining in-house applications (software, employees or consultant costs for maintenance and support, plus the cost of a file server or other necessary hardware) and compare them with Cloud services. It is then recommended that you work with an IT professional organization to help you develop a Cloud strategy and create a solution that meets your needs and your budget.

The
Most Critical Blocks
to your Success…
How to Overcome Them and Get What You Want and Deserve In the last issue we discussed Gremlins. The second of four blocks is Assumptions.
ASSUMPTIONS An ASSUMPTION is a belief that is based on the premise that because something happened in the past, it is automatically going to happen again. How many times have you heard someone say “been there done that” to avoid something new? As a marketing consultant, I was often responsible for analyzing a client’s situation, identifying the “problem,” and coming up with a solution. There were at least a few occasions over the years where I was told “we already tried that, and it didn’t work.” Can you see where an expressed assumption could be extremely limiting? In the case of a proposed marketing “solution,” there are so many different variables (e.g., copy platform, media selection, creative design, offer, pricing, etc.) that a client expressing this kind of assumption could almost guarantee that the problem
would remain unsolved because of their unwillingness to try something they thought they had seen and tried before, assuming it would have the same outcome. When you make choices based on your assumptions, you are letting the past control the future. Assumptions hold you back, because when you already “know” that something won’t work, you probably won’t even consider doing it, or not try too hard since you don’t really believe it can work. When you hold on to your assumptions, you miss out on many possibilities. Here are some typical assumptions: It won’t work because it didn’t work in the past - already tried that. If I don’t do it myself, it won’t be done right. No one listens to me when I speak. I’m no good making calls on the telephone.

Because assumptions are primarily based on personal experience, they are internalized and emotional, and somewhat difficult to let go of. Delving deep to remove the emotion of the past experience may be necessary before moving forward. The main question to ask yourself when challenging an assumption is simply “Just because that happened in the past, why must it happen again?” The answer, once you recognize this block, is that it doesn’t have to. You have the power to make the necessary changes to affect a different and more desired outcome. In the upcoming issues we will discuss Interpretations and Limiting Beliefs.
