Lunar New Year Celebration
XAVIER FOLEY ARTURO M Á RQUEZ ALLISON LOGGINS-HULLDear Friends,
The 2024–25 season is full of great symphonic masterworks, exciting guest artists, and new works for you to discover. I’m thrilled to explore the natural world through music this season, from our season-opening concert with superstar soprano Renée Fleming performing alongside stunning nature footage from National Geographic Society, to Caroline Shaw’s The Observatory and Holst’s The Planets in January, accompanied by mesmerizing projections from NASA.
I kick o the season conducting Rimsky-Korsakov’s colorful Scheherazade, and pianist Inon Barnatan performs Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 17. In January, I return to celebrate Lunar New Year with New Jersey in a jubilant East-meets-West program.
March is full of exciting new experiences. First, Nimbus Dance returns to the Symphony stages with two brand-new dances: Dark Water with music by Qasim Naqvi, and Firebird with Igor Stravinsky’s famous ballet music. Then, we perform a program that includes Rachmanino ’s Symphony No. 2 and a set of solo bass features with exciting young soloist Xavier Foley, one of which is a world premiere. In early April, I am thrilled to conduct Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9—an “Ode to Joy” of a piece that will include the majestic voices of Montclair State University Chorale.
In May, New Jersey Symphony musicians take the spotlight in a program featuring works by Bach and Mozart. The classical season closes in June, with Conrad Tao performing Rachmanino ’s Piano Concerto No. 2, and I will conduct Shostakovich’s monumental Symphony No. 5.
Other guest artists appearing on our stages this season include Jean-Yves Thibaudet playing Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G, Tony Siqi Yun playing Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1, Vadim Gluzman playing Brahms’ Violin Concerto, Paquito D’Rivera and his jazz quintet, and so much more.
I invite you to join us for our journey in music across the state this season, and together we’ll make great music and experiences!
Sincerely,
The mission of the New Jersey Symphony is to connect with the people and diverse communities of New Jersey through the power of live symphonic music to inspire, entertain and educate.
Through adventurous performances, hands-on educational experiences, and robust community programming, we want everyone to enjoy the power and creativity of orchestral music in all its forms. Across genres and venues, for audiences of all walks of life, we strive to bring music that’s meaningful to you, to you.
In our second century of music-making, we are renewing our deeply rooted commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion by championing new, and o en local, artists; engaging audiences for whom the inspiring depth and breadth of classical music will be new; and incorporating the broadest possible representation in all aspects of our organization—all to be er reflect and serve our vibrant communities.
Our expansive educational o erings—including our youth orchestras, masterclasses, and virtual learning opportunities—will build the next generation of listeners and musicians and help students grow, both musically and personally. We will continue to seek new ways to connect with all New Jerseyans, through programs that resonate with a variety of cultural and musical backgrounds, and by being accessible to all audiences.
We’re your New Jersey Symphony, and we’re here for you.
Our community belongs at the Symphony, and the Symphony belongs to the community.”Gabriel van Aalst President & CEO

Performing
the
Jersey Symphony share a common goal: to ensure lasting connections between the people of New Jersey and the life-enhancing power of the performing arts.
Since its opening on October 18, 1997, NJPAC has served more than 11 million visitors, including more than 2 million students and families. The exceptional acoustics of its largest theater, Prudential Hall, are evident the moment an instrumentalist, a singer or a symphony orchestra sounds the first note of any performance on the Be y Wold Johnson Stage. A typical season includes more than 850 events reflective of New Jersey's diverse audiences including concerts, dance performances, comedy shows, conversations and other cultural experiences, both on and o the Arts Center's downtown Newark campus. Among the world-class performers who have appeared at NJPAC are Joshua Bell, Lang Lang, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Bob Dylan, Jerry Seinfeld, Wayne Shorter, Diana Ross, the Gipsy Kings, Savion Glover, Tony Benne , Sting, Aretha Franklin and The Roots.
Many artists and critics have praised NJPAC’s Prudential Hall for its beauty and extraordinary sound, among them former New York Times music critic Hans Fantel (one of the “world’s greatest concert halls”) and arts critic Clive Barnes (the “nation’s most glamorous theater”).
We are your New Jersey Symphony—the harmonious resonance of music delivered to enrich your life, transcending boundaries and reaching you wherever you are. Rooted in our enduring dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion, we believe music should be not only accessible but also a source of joy for our community. Eric Wyrick, the Do ie Litwin Chair and Concertmaster of the New Jersey Symphony, says: “For our 2024–25 Season, we musicians are proud to bring our music to you and to create close connections within your community.”
The New Jersey Symphony depends on the generosity of donors to present, nurture, and celebrate orchestral music in our community and beyond.
This season stands as a testament to our unwavering commitment to presenting both the best of the classical canon and new works from living composers on New Jersey stages. With your support, this spirit will resonate into our next 100 years.
Beyond the concert hall, the Symphony’s community programs continue to be a vital part of the State’s cultural fabric, with musicians meeting audiences where they are—in schools, community centers, healthcare facilities, senior living communities, houses of worship, parks, and more—in all counties of our state. Our more than 150 community o erings every year—many free—include small ensemble performances, outdoor concerts, instrument demonstrations, and hospital-bedside serenades.
President and CEO, Gabriel van Aalst, reflecting on our unique approach in The New York Times, shares, “Traditionally orchestras either say, ‘Come to us, we’re wonderful,’ or they go out into communities and say, ‘Hey, listen to us.’ We were very intentional that we were going to go to communities and ask, ‘What do you need from us?’” The la er underscores our commitment to fostering meaningful connections with diverse communities and tailoring our musical o erings to address their unique needs.
