2019 SICILY
European Summit
30th September – 3rd October
Welcome The Summit Planning Committee would like to welcome you to this year’s European Summit in Sicily. Our focus will be on global alignment and innovation. We are excited to share with you an actionpacked agenda which will explore your creative, presentation, and analytical skills. We have invited colleagues from our US team to further enable our global integration effort and we encourage all of you to give them a very warm European welcome. New on the agenda this year will be the Hackathon. It will be an extension of our Innovation Day held last year. The theme for this year’s Hackathon is Employee Experience with a focus on solutions that improve our day to day work at NKF. We encourage each one of you to start thinking about the internal problems you are facing and possible solutions. Please bring your ideas to the Hackathon and share them with your hack team.

Location I do not envy God’s paradise because I am so satisfied to live in Sicily proclaimed one of its medieval rulers, and this may well hold to this day and age. The largest island of the Mediterranean gently washed over by the waters of the three seas, Sicily is a land of plentiful and varied landscapes from the sun-kissed shores to the rugged hills and mountains of its interior. The southernmost region of Italy located just over 150 km from the African shoreline, it has been a crossroads of civilisations for thousands of years and as such fought over by all the ancient powers in the region. The Phoenicians, the Greeks, the Romans, the Byzantines, the Arabs and the Normans have all left their lasting trace and contributed to forging the island’s unique culture and identity. From the mythical land of the Cyclops guarded by Mount Etna’s smoking hulk, Syracuse’s vestiges of ancient Greeks and Romans, Palermo’s Arab domes and arches to Corleone’s mafia past, Sicily has something to every traveller’s taste. We hope you enjoy its treasures to the fullest, one granita at a time.
Sicily boasts 7 UNESCO World Heritage Sites: • Valle dei Templi • Villa Romana del Casale • Aeolian Islands • Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto • Necropolis of Pantalica • Mount Etna • Arab-Norman Palermo and the cathedral churches of Cefalù and Monreale

Italian Cooking class VILLA ANTONIO Ristorante: Via Luigi Pirandello, 88 - 98039 Taormina Sharpen those knives and get kitchen-ready, we’re taking you on a journey to Sicilian flavours.
Sicilian food is the original fusion cuisine, a mix of Greek, Spanish, Arabic, and many other influences of all those who set foot on the island. Although clearly Italian with plenty of pasta, olive oil, wine, and seafood, it uses ingredients such as raisins and saffron as well as cooking techniques that clearly differ from those found on the mainland.
Clay & ceramics workshop Blu Arte - I due Giardini di Naxos Lungomare Tysandros, 78, 98035 Giardini Naxos Everyone is an artist… If you haven’t discovered your creative streak yet, now is a chance to shine.
Sicily is world-famous for its history of ceramics dating back to 2400 BC. The abundance of early settlers from all over the world – in particular, Greeks and Arabs gave origin to different styles and aesthetics that are continued to this day. The popularity of the art can also be traced to the quality of the Sicilian clay, which contains a mixture of unique silicates that give it its select properties. Caltagirone, Santo Stefano di Camastra, Burgio, and Sciacca, each with its distinctive style, are the four centers of the island’s ceramics industry today. 7

Extracurricular options
Taormina Hailed by some as the tourist capital of Sicily, Taormina is a chic resort known for its dream-like location on the side of the mountain, and brilliant views of the coastline with Mount Etna as the backdrop. With highlights such as Teatro Antico, the most dramatically situated Greek theatre in the world, the picturesque nature reserve of Isola Bella and the historic charm of Corso Umberto Taormina with its many shops and restaurants, Taormina is a place to remember. If you are not afraid of heights, you should visit the most beautiful village in Sicily: Castemola, a natural terrace built around the ruins of a Norman castle which offers even more spectacular views. 16
Mount Etna The towering presence dominating the island, Mount Etna is Europe’s tallest volcano and one of the most active in the world with eruptions occurring on average once a year. Declared in 2013 a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is the source of many a legend. Its thousands of years of activity have brought such fertility to the soils, that almost three-quarters of Sicily’s produce is grown in its vicinity. To visit Etna’s moon-like landscapes, you can hike, ride or take a cable car.
Giardini Naxos The first Greek settlement in Sicily, Giardini Naxos is a popular seaside resort known mostly for its sandy beaches and busy nightlife in high season. Located at the foot of Taormina, it offers sublime views of the famous resort and the surrounding hills.
Alcantara River Park One of the sites of most significant geological interest on the island, the basaltic walls of the Alcantara Gorge are up to 50 meters high. They were shaped by cooling lava and the pristine waters of the Alcantara river carving its way through their midst. You can explore this natural wonder by walking, swimming, or river trekking, depending on the weather. Don’t forget to visit the Venus waterfall, where the goddess used to bathe and relax.
