2ND RENAL NUTRITION SEMINAR 18-19 AUGUST 2014

Message From Chief Editor Greetings from the National Kidney Foundation.

Who’s Who @NKF PATRON

YAB Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak

BOARD OF GOVERNORS

President Y. Bhg. Tan Sri Dato’ Dr. Abu Bakar Suleiman Deputy President Y. Bhg. Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah Vice-President Mr. Lynn Kulasingham

For all the fascinating and varied activities, we are indeed encouraged that kidney transplantation in this country had really advanced with the first successful transplant from cardiac death. Through this novel way, there is the likelihood that there can be more transplants resulting in chronic kidney patients having a greater probability of being transplanted. On the other hand, with no let-up in our efforts in promoting and disseminating information on kidney care through a healthy life style and diet, the response too has maintained its momentum, if not progressed further. This is reflected by the 11th Patient Forum held for the first time on 15 June 2014 in Kota Kinabalu involving all facets of society and by the international 2nd Renal Nutrition Seminar held on 18-19 August 2014 in Petaling Jaya which was more focused on the medical and paramedical professionals as well as dietitians. Apart from these, health checks and counselling were extended to the more remote rural areas and small towns to compensate for as well as to complement the lack, if not, the insufficiency of medical facilities. We are glad that with the help of kind and generous donors we continue fueling our activities and care for the poor and needy. Happy reading.

NKF’s 11th Patient Forum 2014 In efforts to disseminate information on kidney functions and all aspects of kidney disease, prevention and treatment (including diet) throughout the country, NKF has been organizing the annual Patient Forums since 2003. The sustained activity has been reinforced by information on the availability of subsidies from both government and statutory agencies for kidney patients and the approach to apply for these subsidies by members of the public, especially the poor. On 15 June 2014, the 11th Patient Forum for the year 2014 was held for the first time in Sabah at the Tang Dynasty Hotel, Lorong Plaza Wawasan in Kota Kinabalu. In addition, booths were set up by pharmaceutical companies and NKF Public Education Department to provide information on kidney diseases and their treatment. 362 participants comprising patients, their family members, care-givers, staff from government, private & NGO dialysis centres and officers from state government and statutory agencies and parties interested in knowing more about kidneys and their related issues attended the Forum. It was declared open by Y.B. Datuk Ir. Edward Yong Oui Fah, who represented the Chief Minister of Sabah. Medical issues related to kidneys were dealt with by nephrologists Dr. Wong Koh Wei and Dr. Bharathan Thevarajah, while Ms. Kher Pui Ling, the NKF Dietitian, talked on dietary matters. Tuan Haji Mohd Zaratkhan bin Haji Abdul Rahman of the Sabah Islamic Council (MUIS), Encik Jais bin Asri of the Sabah Social Welfare Department and Puan Hajjah Mastika Binti Asmat of the Social Security Organisation (SOCSO) spoke of the roles of their respective organisations in helping the poor. The Forum ended with a motivational presentation by Mr. Raymund Jagan, a trained counsellor.

Cooking Competition Among Kidney Patients by Kher Pui Ling The cooking competition for food that is healthier and friendlier to the kidneys was held on 22 June 2014 at the NKF Resource Centre in Petaling Jaya. It was a joint effort among three departments within the Foundation - Public Education, Medical and Welfare, the latter teaming up with the Patient Support Group (PSG). The main objective of the competition was to encourage dialysis patients in NKF and their care-givers to cook food that is tailored to dialysis diet. In addition, the competition provided a platform for patients to interact with one another by sharing their traditional food recipes and exchanging tips on how they adjusted their diet to suit their dialysis treatment. 12 patients in four teams from different dialysis centres participated in the competition. Pusat Dialisis NKF – Dato’ Dr. GA Sreenevasan (Petaling Jaya) was represented by 2 teams, while the rest, namely, Pusat Dialisis NKF-Kelab Apex (Klang) and Pusat Dialisis NKF- Charis (Cheras) were each represented by one team. A week before the event, each competing team was given a budget of RM30 to plan for the ingredients for a healthy lunch for two persons. The teams were then required to submit their respective lists of ingredients to the organisers to purchase such items. On the day as the contest was to start Syafiqah Mohammad, the Resource Centre Executive, briefed the participants on the rules and regulations of the competition, one of which was that the contestants were required to complete their cooking and serve their dishes within an hour from the start of the competition. Judges for the competition were NKF Dietitician, Kher Pui Ling, competition organizing committee members Mazhani Azhan and Syafiqah Mohammad and Mr. Chuah Seong Ban, the President of PSG. There were two winners to the competition selected on the basis of food taste, creativity and healthiness as well as team-work, cleanliness and time management - a team from Pusat Dialisis NKF – Dato’ Dr. GA Sreenevasan (Petaling Jaya) and the team from Pusat Dialisis NKF-Kelab Apex (Klang).

Patients get kidneys from Australian killed in boating accident KUALA LUMPUR: Australian tourist Shelly Elizabeth Mahoney, who died after she was hit by a boom on her husband’s yacht during a storm near Penang, became Malaysia’s first cardiac death organ donor. Before the procedure last Friday, Malaysia only took organs from those certified as “brain dead”. One of Mahoney’s kidneys was harvested and given to end-stage kidney failure patient Khamisah Othman. Kamsiah had been waiting almost 20 years for a kidney in order to get the transplant. The operation was carried out at about 10pm on the same day that Mahoney died. It was completed at 1am the following day. The other recipient of Mahoney’s kidney was a 42-year-old housewife in Kedah. Khamisah, 36, had almost given up hope of ever getting a transplant. Hailing from Sik, Kedah, she is now finally able to pursue her dream career. “I’ve always wanted to be a lecturer,” she said at Hospital Kuala Lumpur yesterday. On how she was feeling post-operation, Kamsiah said she felt weak as her red blood cell count was low following the operation. Khamisah, who tutored students to support herself, said she went on haemodialysis three years after she was diagnosed with kidney failure in 1994. She was in Form 5 then. She said securing a job was difficult as she had to go for haemodialysis three times a week. Hospital Kuala Lumpur Nephrology Department head Datuk Dr Ghazali Ahmad said Mahoney’s kidneys were healthy. “She seemed to have led a healthy lifestyle,” he said. Khamisah said she, too, would adopt a healthy lifestyle.

NKF Joined Hands With Ampang Puteri Secondary School As part of NKF’s continuous efforts to slow down the increasing rate of chronic kidney disease which has reached an alarming high of 20% in Malaysia, the Foundation teamed up with the Ampang Puteri Secondary School to counter the noticeable trend. The joint action was to disseminate information on the prevention and early detection of chronic kidney disease amongst the young, especially school children via principally a healthy life style and proper diet. The campaign under the theme “Eat Well, Live Well and Shake Well” covered four phases: aerobic, health talk, health screening and games and was held on 23 May 2014 in conjunction with the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the school. More than 500 students were involved. The campaign commenced with a half an hour aerobic exercise in the early hours of the morning with the participation of the students from Forms 1-5 and their teachers. A health talk on healthy eating in the school hall followed and was focused on the importance of having a balanced diet. The NKF LifeCheck Champion Team conducted health screenings for the teachers with the screenings covering amongst others blood pressure readings, urine tests and counselling.

Mobile Health Screening in Pahang As part of the mission to promote health checks in rural areas, a NKF Mobile Health Screening Unit ventured to parts of south west Pahang in early June this year. Amongst the areas the Unit visited was Kampong Lurah Bilut in Bentong, a Felda settlement. The trip sponsored by Allianz Insurance Bhd. and led by Yap Lai Yin from the Public Education Department was to provide free health screening to the villagers. The screening included blood pressure reading, glucose and urine tests as well as the BMI test, which is a test for weight and height index. NKF nutritionists, Yap Lai Yin, Fadilah Nasram and Nurhafatini Aziz from the unit were also on hand to provide free counselling on the dietary needs and change in life style to fit the health of those whose screening results were found to be abnormal. For those who had been found to have high sugar reading in their urine or high blood pressure or to be afflicted with both the affinities, they were advised to go to the local hospital to seek further examination. Response to the screening was good with about 100 villagers coming forward to have their health checked and amongst them were the village headman and other local leaders.

The underlying purpose of the project is to get medical students to start and then continue in future with the sales of attractive specially designed T-shirts to members of the public for RM20 per shirt. Each shirt sold will be accompanied by a card spelling out Medsoc’s initiative. Profits from the sales will be channeled to a fund in NKF which will identify the hard-core poor patients to be given financial assistance for their dialysis treatment. The students would also be visiting the patients to give them the t-shirts and interact with them to have a better understanding of the hardship and suffering they have been experiencing since being stricken by the dreaded kidney disease. NKF thanks Medsoc in particular Professor Dr. Cheng Hwee Ming for coming up with this project to help the desperately poor kidney failure patients at the Foundation in their dialysis. 10 < National Kidney Foundation Malaysia
