Meet Shorewood’s New Superintendent...
Meet Shorewood’s New Fitness Center Supervisor...
We are excited to announce the appointment of Dr. Bryan Davis as the new Superintendent of Shorewood Schools. Dr. Davis was chosen after an extensive search. “We are confident that we found the right fit for Shorewood with Dr. Davis,” said School Board President Paru Shah. “He has a proven track record of meeting the needs of all students, including underachieving and high-achieving students, and comes to our District with a depth and breadth of experience which will serve us well. Dr. Davis will be an invaluable asset to us as both an educational and community leader.” Dr. Davis holds a BSE in Business Education, Masters in Educational Administration, and Ph. D. in Urban Education from UW-Milwaukee. He has served as the Superintendent of the Columbus School District, in Columbus, WI since 2010, and previously held positions as Principal of Green Bay Southwest High School and Associate Principal of Green Bay Preble High School. “I am humbled to be selected to serve as the next Superintendent of the Shorewood School District,” Dr. Davis remarked. “My wife, our daughters, and I are looking forward to living in Shorewood and becoming active members of the community.” During his time at Columbus, Dr. Davis increased student performance, oversaw a major districtwide renovation, and established the Project Lead the Way/STEM programming for grades K-12. The Shorewood School Board and District are looking forward to working with Dr. Davis and welcoming him and his family to the Shorewood community.
My name is DaMara Buckley. I recently graduated from Carroll University in Exercise Science with a minor in Business Management. I decided to pursue this degree because of my strong love for fitness and exercise. I did my internship as a personal trainer at Gold’s Gym and was then hired as a trainer. I love the impact you can have on someone’s day or life through fitness. I am excited to bring my knowledge and skills I have learned to Shorewood. I look forward to helping to teach others new skills while also gaining new experiences and build relationships. In the gym, I love lifting heavy and finding new limits for myself. Outside of work and the gym, I enjoy spending my time outdoors. I grew up in Waukesha, so I am excited to explore Shorewood.

We provide numerous exciting and engaging thematic units throughout the year, allowing your children to freely explore and grow in important skill development areas, including: large and fine motor skills, language and literacy, science and math, art and music. Your child’s social and emotional development is of prime importance. When the elementary schools do not have school, Bright Beginnings will not be held. PRESCHOOL TOILETING GUIDELINES: All children are to be completely toilet trained before the first day of school. If your child is not complete toilet trained, you will be required to be present in the classroom and assist your child with toileting needs. Independence and reinforcement of self-help skills will be encouraged by the teachers. 2015 - 2016 Tuition Payments: A $200 nonrefundable deposit is required at the time of registration to reserve a spot for your child. Receive a $100 discount if tuition is paid in full at registration, otherwise a payment plan is available. Down to Earth Experimental Physics (DEEP)
Grade 5 - 6 The students enrolled in the Down to Earth Experimental Physics (DEEP) program learn, through fun hands-on experiments and instructive demos, about physical phenomena such as mechanical waves, light reflection, refraction and dispersion (i.e., separation into color components), and their application to developing physical instruments to study large astronomical objects (e.g., stars) as well as small microscopic particles (e.g., biological cells, molecules, and atoms). In addition, the students learn how to build and use various devices: a toy guitar, convex and concave lenses cut out of Jell-O, a telescope, a microscope, a spectrograph for analyzing light color, and an electrical circuit including an LED light source to study absorption of light by various substances. At the end of each session, the students take home the device they built to play with and to show to their family and friends. The program culminates with a visit to the Planetarium and the Physics Department’s research laboratories at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. This program is co-sponsored with the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and is offered by Prof. Vali Raicu and Mrs. Gina Raicu to students who were not enrolled in the program previously. This program was offered previously by the District’s Advanced Learning Department. Fee:

Ice Skating Lessons at Pettit National Ice Center Age 3 - 12
Is your child interested in learning how to ice skate? Designed by U.S. Figure Skating, the Learn to Skate Classes enable beginning skaters to experience the fundamentals of the sport to start a lifetime commitment to health and fitness. Each session will have goals for participants to master before moving on to the next level. To see which lesson is right for your child, please see descriptions below. Be sure to choose the appropriate level. Classes meet once a week for 6 weeks. Recommended equipment: helmet, mittens/gloves, long/snow pants, sweatshirts, winter jacket, and skates. Skates can be rented at the Pettit for an additional fee. Fee includes six, 40 minute classes, 20 minutes of designated skating time. “Participants only” practice time is immediately following every class. Complimentary public skating on day of class when available, plus four additional complimentary public skating passes to be used for practice time on non-class days throughout session. To register, visit our website or call the Recreation Department at (414) 963-6913 x 4.
Class Offerings:
Tot N Me - This is a unique opportunity for a parent and a child to skate together. Registration fee includes one child, ages 3 - 5 years, and one adult. The parent/adult must be on the ice wearing skates (with their child) during all lessons.
Snowplow Sam - This program is a progression of three classes designed to teach the fundamentals of skating to children, ages 3 - 5 years, with little or no skating experience. Skaters will learn basic balance and skating skills in an age appropriate and fun environment. Please specify level. Snowplow Sam 1 - Sit and stand with skates on, marching and gliding with two feet. Snowplow Sam 2 - Long glides, forward and backward sizzles. Snowplow Sam 3 - Forward skating, stopping and curves. Hockey Tots - This class is designed for those ages 3 - 5 with little or no skating experience that have hockey on the brain. Class participants will learn the basics of skating with and without their hockey sticks including falling and getting up, marching, 2-foot glides, stopping and more. The focus will be on skating skills and not the actual game of hockey. Although this is a hockey geared class it is always recommended for new skaters to begin in figure skates and change to hockey skates once a solid sense of balance has been established.
Basic 1 - 8 - The Basic Skills Program teaches students progressively more difficult moves through eight levels of skating. Upon completion of the Basic 1 through 8 Program, skaters will have knowledge of the sport enabling them to advance to more specialized areas of skating. If a child is skating (or taking lessons) for the first time, the student should register for the Basic 1 class level. Students are evaluated at the first class session to gauge their skill/ability level, and are placed in another class if the their skill is applicable. Please specify level. Basic 1 - Proper techniques to fall & get up, marching, two foot glides & stops Basic 2 - Backward skating, one foot glides, two foot turns & snowplow stops Basic 3 - Forward stroking, two foot spins & essence of actual gliding and skating Basic 4 - Forward edges, crossovers & backward snowplow stops Basic 5 - Backward edges, crossovers & one foot spins Basic 6 - Beginning jumps, turns & spirals Basic 7 - More advanced jumps, turns & edge work Basic 8 - Combining moves, jumps & spins with new techniques

through Powers of Attorney (POAs) or a court-appointed guardianship process. We will discuss the financial and legal aspects of what acting as a guardian or POA actually entails.
