Meet Our Cover Designers... Art has been a major part of my life since I could pick up a pencil. Always working with drawing and painting, I never considered graphic arts as something I could have passion in. In the brief amount of time I spent in the graphics lab, I’ve become a better artist. I truly believe that taking graphic arts is essential in building a wellrounded artist. The graphic arts program has taught me how to use inspiration, create powerful compositions. The assignment for the Recreation Department cover design pushed me to step outside the box of typical ideas and formats for a cover design. I’ve already incorporated the skills I’ve learned from graphic design into other areas of my art, and I plan to continue my artistic journey and evolve along the way as I enter college and beyond.

The Shorewood High School Graphic Design Program is comprised of introductory, intermediate and advanced level classes. Within the program, students are taught various computer software programs. The higher-level classes are taught in a design studio atmosphere wherein clients come to the class to present their ideas to the students and they work on projects that are both school as well as community based. Shorewood High School’s Graphic Design Programs are a helpful option for those students who plan on going into Graphic Design, Advertising, or other Communication related fields at the college level. - Jeff Zimpel, SHS Graphic Design Teacher.

SCHOOL DISTRICT OF SHOREWOOD- BRIGHT BEGINNINGS PRESCHOOL 2016 - 2017 SCHOOL YEAR Must be at least 2 years and 10 months by September 6, 2016 Bright Beginnings Preschool focuses on the individual child, and provides an educational environment that stimulates and nurtures each child’s unique growth potential. We provide numerous exciting and engaging thematic units throughout the year, allowing your children to freely explore and grow in important skill development areas, including: large and fine motor skills, language and literacy, science and math, art and music. Your child’s social and emotional development is of prime importance. At Bright Beginnings, we help each child grow in her or her feelings of self-worth, self-confidence, respect, appreciation of others, love of learning and of school. Our curriculum reflects the most current understanding regarding child development and early education, and embraces Shorewood School District curriculum goals. Our classroom ratio is two adults for sixteen students. Bright Beginnings will follow the school year calendar for the 2016 - 2017 school year. When the elementary schools do not have school, Bright Beginnings will not be held. PRESCHOOL TOILETING GUIDELINES: All children are to be completely toilet trained before the first day of school. If your child is not complete toilet trained, you will be required to be present in the classroom and assist your child with toileting needs. Teachers and volunteers will assist children with buttons or snaps on clothing as necessary. Independence and reinforcement of self-help skills will be encouraged by the teachers. 2016 - 2017 Tuition Payments: A $200 nonrefundable deposit is required at the time of registration to reserve a spot for your child. Receive a $100 discount if tuition is paid in full at registration, otherwise a payment plan is available. All balances must be paid in full by August 1, 2016. NEW - Online registration now available, online fee will reflect the $100 discount (payment plans cannot be established online). No refunds or credit will be given for this program.

Down to Earth Experimental Physics (DEEP)
Grade 5 - 6 The students enrolled in the Down to Earth Experimental Physics (DEEP) program learn, through fun hands-on experiments and instructive demos, about physical phenomena such as mechanical waves, light reflection, refraction and dispersion (i.e., separation into color components), and their application to developing physical instruments to study large astronomical objects (e.g., stars) as well as small microscopic particles (e.g., biological cells, molecules, and atoms). In addition, the students learn how to build and use various devices: a toy guitar, convex and concave lenses cut out of Jell-O, a telescope, a microscope, a spectrograph for analyzing light color, and an electrical circuit including an LED light source to study absorption of light by various substances. At the end of each session, the students take home the device they built to play with and to show to their family and friends. The program culminates with a visit to the Planetarium and the Physics Department’s research laboratories at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. This program is co-sponsored with the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and is offered by Prof. Vali Raicu and Mrs. Gina Raicu to students who were not enrolled in the program previously. Fee:

Page 19 Down to Earth Experimental Physics (DEEP) The students enrolled in the Down to Earth Experimental Physics (DEEP) program learn, through fun hands-on experiments and instructive demos, about physical phenomena such as mechanical waves, light reflection, refraction and dispersion (i.e., separation into color components), and their application to developing physical instruments to study large astronomical objects (e.g., stars) as well as small microscopic particles (e.g., biological cells, molecules, and atoms). Page 18 Instructor: Prof. Vali Raicu and Mrs. Gina Raicu Drama Jr There’s Nothing Like a Show on Broadway: A Musical Revue Shorewood Drama Jr’s fall show celebrates the hottest thing around... Broadway Musicals! There’s Nothing Like a Show on Broadway: A Musical Revue is a fun, toe-tapping spectacular about a truly American art form. We pay homage to early classics (Showboat, Oklahoma!) and great pioneering American songwriters (Cole Porter, Rodgers & Hammerstein;) daring productions (Cabaret, West Side Story) and producers (Sondheim) that kept the genre fresh and important; blockbusters (Phantom of the Opera, The Lion King) and independents game changers (Rent) and of course today’s young, scrappy and hungry hits (Hamilton.) And everything in between. So all actors, dancers, singers, and technicians... hit the street and move your feet to the place you’ve got to go because there’s nothing like a show on Broadway...and there’s nothing like a Shorewood Drama Jr. show. Production dates are Saturday, November 19 and Sunday November 20. Page 15 Instructor: Sara Van Loon & Brinn Hill

REDgen presents:
Screenagers
Are you watching kids scroll through life, with their rapid-fire thumbs and a six-second attention span? Physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston saw that with her own kids and learned that the average kid spends 6.5 hours a day looking at screens. She wondered about the impact of all this time and about the friction occurring in homes and schools around negotiating screen time-friction she knew all too well. To view the trailer go to: http://www.screenagersmovie.com Location: Date: Time:
Dominican High School Auditorium Tuesday, October 4 7:00 pm
