For the past 22 years, it has been my pleasure to provide quality programs and services for the District and Community through the Shorewood Recreation and Community Services Department.

Science Building - VHE Pool entrance and middle entrance Performing Arts Building - Southwest door, across from Administration Building

I’ve been honored to have had the chance to meet thousands of area residents, and to work with so many dedicated team members. The experience has been incredibly rewarding, and I’m very proud of how we’ve been able to enhance the way our department serves this extraordinary community: • • • • • • •

Significant expansion of both youth and adult programming. Development and opening of Shorewood Community Fitness Center in 1998. Creation of Bright Beginnings Preschools at both Lake Bluff and Atwater. Implementation of Community Advisory Committees to help guide the Rec Department, Fitness Center and Nutritional Services. (Thank you parents and community members for your passion!) Emphasis on community usage of District facilities after the instructional day. Involvement with important District facility improvements. The Arts are woven deeply into the fabric of our community. Recognizing this, we launched Shorewood Drama Junior to give younger kids practical theatre experience prior to their arrival at SHS. Our Summer Strings & Summer Band programs now provide a structured environment for students to work on their music when school isn’t in session. And lastly, we created the innovative Choral Arts offering, an intergenerational program where adults sing along side our SHS choir.

I’ve loved my time in Shorewood. Thank you all for allowing me to have an amazing career in a truly special place. Deb Stolz, CPRP Director of Shorewood Recreation and Community Services

SCHOOL DISTRICT OF SHOREWOOD - BRIGHT BEGINNINGS PRESCHOOL 2018 - 2019 SCHOOL YEAR Must be at least 3 years by October 31, 2018 Bright Beginnings Preschool focuses on the individual child, and provides an educational environment that stimulates and nurtures each child’s unique growth potential. We provide numerous exciting and engaging thematic units throughout the year, allowing your children to freely explore and grow in important skill development areas, including: large and fine motor skills, language and literacy, science and math, art and music. Your child’s social and emotional development is of prime importance. At Bright Beginnings, we help each child grow in her or her feelings of self-worth, self-confidence, respect, appreciation of others, love of learning and of school. Our curriculum reflects the most current understanding regarding child development and early education, and embraces Shorewood School District curriculum goals. Our classroom ratio is two adults for sixteen students. Bright Beginnings will follow the school year calendar for the 2018 - 2019 school year. When the elementary schools do not have school, Bright Beginnings will not be held. PRESCHOOL TOILETING GUIDELINES: All children are to be completely toilet trained before the first day of school. If your child is not complete toilet trained, you will be required to be present in the classroom and assist your child with toileting needs. Teachers and volunteers will assist children with buttons or snaps on clothing as necessary. Independence and reinforcement of self-help skills will be encouraged by the teachers. 2018 - 2019 Tuition Payments: A $200 nonrefundable deposit is required at the time of registration to reserve a spot for your child. Receive a $100 discount if tuition is paid in full at registration, otherwise a payment plan is available. All balances must be paid in full by August 1, 2018. Online registration now available, online fee will reflect the $100 discount (payment plans cannot be established online). No refunds or credit will be given for this program.

Wills, trusts, and beneficiary planning provide necessary direction and continuity for passing on your assets after death and helping your loved ones administer your estate. Equally important are during-life issues such as health care directives and durable powers of attorney, along with proper financial and retirement planning (e.g. maximizing Social Security benefits) for your long-term needs. We will discuss strategies to help you protect your assets and ease the burden on your loved ones. Page 7 Instructor: Jess Henrickson,Financial Advisor Robert W. Page 6 Instructor: Joanne Dixon - Monday & Wednesday Hamsah Badrah - Tuesday & Thursday Gravity Cruiser Design Challenge - A World in Motion New The gravity cruiser is a prototype toy presented by the fictitious toy company EarthToy Designs. The engineering and design of the toy is incomplete, and student design teams are asked to complete the design process. These design teams provide many of the services required for the toy product to move to the next stage of development. The teams will do product testing and engineering and create their own cruiser designs. In this challenge, students will focus on understanding the relationships between the “sweep” of the lever arm, the number of winds the string makes about the axle, and the distance the gravity cruiser travels. Students will also investigate how the diameter of the wheels, the diameter of the axles, and the amount of weight placed on the lever affect the gravity cruiser’s speed and distance. The interplay

of these factors is not simple-it offers a rich challenge in critical thinking while at the same time providing an enjoyable “vehicle” for learning how to use the experimental method to test hypotheses and solve a tricky engineering problem. After learning how to control the performance of this toy through a series of controlled tests, student design teams create their own customized toys. The student design teams will present their toys to parents on Thursday, Feb 8. The students will be participating in the School District’s second annual Authentic Learning Showcase on Wednesday, May 2. Page 15 Instructor: MSOE Students Gymnastics Instruction This class will take you through the basic fundamentals involved in the vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise. Participants will be divided to allow for instruction appropriate to skill level. Page 16 CPR Training, Hands-Only Brought to you by the North Shore Fire/Rescue. Hands-Only CPR is CPR without mouth-to-mouth breaths. It is recommended for use by people who see a teen or adult suddenly collapse in an “out-of-hospital” setting (such as at home, at work or in a park). We will also review how to use an AED. The training is free, but pre-registration is required. Page 7 Instructor: North Shore Fire & Rescue Ice Skating Lessons The Basic Skills Program teaches students progressively more difficult moves through six levels of skating. Upon completion of the Basic 1 through 6 Program, skaters will have knowledge of the sport enabling them to advance to more specialized areas of skating. If a child is taking lessons for the first time, the student should register for the Basic 1 class level. Students are evaluated at the first class session to gauge their skill/ability level, and are placed in another class if their skill level is applicable. Please specify level.
