MISSION VISION & VALUES MISSION To increase the quality, speed and scope of technology innovation and student learning by bringing together the talent, facilities and funding resources of the College of Informatics, in order to solve future-focused business challenges and business opportunities. This will be accomplished through collaborative research, virtual co-ops, student/faculty/staff projects, business-development opportunities and the dissemination of the practice and discipline of informatics to create long-term economic value.

VIRTUAL CO-OP 4
The CAI, in the College of Informatics, operates a nationally recognized virtual co-op program. Mentored by professional staff and supported by faculty, students collaborate on a variety of projects such as: • • • • • • •

The students gain real-world experience on industry-relevant projects.
Growing talent is a top priority for our region. Because the need for technical competence spans all business sectors, the role that NKU’s Center for Applied Informatics plays, with a steady stream of co-ops & project-based learning programs, is critical for our future success. APPRENTICE UPDATE The Informatics Apprenticeship Program allows students to achieve high-tech work experience while earning income to support college costs. Students thrive as part of a development team on virtual co-op project assignments such as quality assurance and web development.

PROPEL INNOVATION 8
JOHNSTONE SUPPLY
Digital assistants like Siri, Google Now, Cortana, Alexa, and others are transforming the way customers are interacting with computers. Johnstone Supply is partnering with the CAI to test the feasibility of using speech recognition platforms to enhance their customer portal.
FLORENCE CEMETERY
The CAI partnered with Boone County schools to develop an app for Veteran’s Day. The school wanted to honor veterans buried at the Florence Cemetery. Their students researched the history of the veterans and created multimedia assets to tell the stories. Students from the CAI developed a tour app that utilized Bluetooth beacons. When the iPad running the app came in range of the beacon, it would trigger the app to play the multimedia file of the veteran's service to our country.
SPRING GROVE
The CAI and Spring Grove Cemetery collaborated to produce new digital signage to be played in their main lobby. The footage is meant to evangelize their service offerings, explore the history of the cemetery and put patrons and loved ones at ease while they navigate through a difficult time. A second project was to create an app that allows people to have self-guided tours of the cemetery. The tours are rich in multimedia that include photos and narration of tour stops.
SAFETY EDGE
Safety Edge is a startup company focused on how to deal with hazardous material incidents. The company is working with the CAI to develop a mobile app that will help police officers, firefighters, truck drivers and other professionals that are involved with hazardous materials. The app will include a database of hazardous materials that can be searched 9 by voice, image, or text.

The CAI partnered with Lodige Process Technology, a US subsidiary of Lodige Process Technology located in Paderborn, Germany, to design and develop a new website presence to attract and retain customers.
RE/MAX
Through a strategic partnership with a RE/MAX realtor, we are serving as a vital IT service provider. We are engaged to maintain their existing web presence via our Web Assurance Policy while developing a 21st-century website that provides insights into the Cincinnati real estate market.
L.I.F.E. FOUNDATION
The CAI and the Randolph Company collaborated to create a website community for the L.I.F.E. (Local Initiative for Excellence) Foundation. George J. Wile established the organization in 2014 with a mission to support research to achieve better health outcomes for patients with brain and neurodegenerative disease.
The new website was created to facilitate communication within the organization, provide information on research grant recipients, support innovative research, sustain productive research teams and encourage and support investigators in the early part of their career.
UNCOVER TRUTH RX FOR SUCCESS
Rx for Success is designed to help educate, motivate, and remind parents and caregivers to talk, read and sing more with their children. The app uses short 2-minute, age-indexed videos to teach parents simple ways to engage their children in everyday language. The app then sends short cues in the form of push notifications to parents and caregivers as both a reminder and motivation to continue these activities.
HOSPICE OF SOUTHWEST OHIO
The CAI developed an app for the Hospice of Southwest Ohio. The purpose is to help you and your loved ones celebrate life and take this journey. Users may discover why hundreds of families turn to Hospice of Southwest Ohio every year. It promotes their experienced staff and volunteers who are uniquely qualified to provide the care, comfort and companionship to loved ones. 11

Lightborne Communications, Inc. and CAI collaborated to create an immersive virtual reality experience for attendees of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra 2016 Lumenocity Block Party. Our students assisted participants with demos of the HTC Vive Virtual Reality headset, peripherals and Google Tiltbrush software.
MUSIC RESOURCE CENTER The Music Resource Center (MRC)—Cincinnati is a multifaceted teen program that uses recording and performing arts, as well as life skills mentoring, to create a sense of empowerment and accomplishment in the urban community. The CAI is pleased to work with the MRC based on a generous donation from the Mayerson Foundation. CAI student Maci Alf worked with the staff and members of MRC to create a video showcasing both the spirit of MRC and the talents of MRC members.
MAYERSON
The Mayerson Student Philanthropy Project instills in students an understanding of their role and responsibility in the community. Students begin the semester with a limited grasp of community needs. The philanthropy experience leaves them with a deeper understanding of those needs and a passion for addressing them.

GRIFFIN FEST
Griffin Fest is a presentation of student projects from the departments of Communication, Business Informatics, Computer Science and the CAI. NKU College of Informatics students researched, conducted and produced exceptional projects that were presented in a reverse career fair fashion to regional business leaders.
FOUNDERCON NKU was pleased to host Techstar's John Hill in October. He is a network catalyst who supports the world's most promising entrepreneurs throughout their journey. The event was the kickoff to FounderCon week, which consisted of founder-led panels, workshops, discussion groups and network experiences.
CYBERSECURITY SYMPOSIUM
The annual Symposium brings together 450 IT, security professionals, and regional privacy attorneys for a one-day event focused on cybersecurity challenges, legal issues, risk management and best practices.
INTERALLIANCE TECHOLYMPICS
Techolympics, the region’s largest high school STEM event, has over 40 high schools represented from the region and nearly 500 student attendees. NKU's President Geoffrey Mearns delivered the keynote speech, which sparked an informatics flame.
