Welcome to our brand new Magazine for Northern Kentucky, Friends like to know everything about each other. So let me introduce myself by telling you a little about ClassX and NKY Live: and what we are all about. I was born with a radio bug. I love it and am mesmerized by it. In 1997, I became aware that FCC rules would not approve or license low powered radio stations which would allow the “little” guy to start his own. It affected me and hundreds of other people across the country. As risky as it was, I had to go for it. I put my own unlicensed station on the air in protest of their rules. During the 90’s I observed the Corporate takeover of local stations. I watched commercial radio change its’ focus from serving listeners, to making tons of cash to pay down its massive debt. Radio became a money machine. The mom and pop operations were gone and radio in general became homogenized. Enter the playlists of the same 20 songs over and over. I’m sure if you are reading this, you know exactly what I mean. My plan for our stations was to do it the way I heard it, growing up. To focus on the communities where our signals are and to be an innovator, not a follower. You see it is quite easy for someone to be a part of the pack, but difficult to be creative and bold enough to step out away from the same ole-same ole. In 1998 we founded Spryex Communications, Inc. and applied for our first radio station in the Cincinnati area. In 2006 we were granted the long awaited permit and signed on WMWX 88.9 FM with our unique format of Rock music known as ClassX. In 2009 we added WYNS at 89.3 in Warren County Ohio. Then in 2011, we added our 3rd 10,000 watt FM signal, WKCX on 89.1 FM in NKY. ClassX Radio is now a combined 15,000 watts of power throughout the Northern Kentucky/Greater Cincinnati market! Why was I so excited to turn on our Northern Kentucky signal? I grew up in Erlanger and attended Lloyd High School. It is exciting for me to serve this area in a way that is fresh and new. We spoke to people from the area and we heard their wishes! Northern Kentucky wanted their own Rock station, and it has been our pleasure to give it to you! Now we have added a brand new community magazine, NKY Live. Born for the same reasons as our radio station: to offer the people and business of Northern Kentucky their own voice! We realize this economy has been tough on local entrepreneurs’. So we provide a low cost way of promoting your business with multiple media sources including web, print, radio and social media.

We provide interesting entertainment reading about local communities, businesses, local musicians and bands, Classic Rock stories, the arts, the venues and shows, concerts, eateries and the people behind the scene that make it all happen. We have a tender heart for our community. Our radio stations are staffed by volunteers: we offer free training and place them on the air, giving them a voice. Our mission is to do the same thing with our magazine. You will not find that from any other radio, newspaper, or magazine that claim to serve the NKy communities. If you are interested in advertising in NKY Live, feel free to contact me. We also have several lucrative sales positions available, a number of open on-air slots and need folks from the community to write for NKY Live as well as promote both NKY Live and ClassX. Attention Kentucky;

ClassX is declaring a JCONN2 alert… By J i m S h o e

Does that sound ominous? Well; musically speaking it is explosive; but not in a Def-Con emergency kind of way. “JCONN2” is the band name Walton, Kentucky native Marty Connor has been working with all year. If you are like me and instantly wonder what happened to JCONN1, you can relax; there are no abandoned ex-band mates to worry about. “Actually, my wife Debbie came up with the name off our kids, Jeramie and Janna” laughed Connor,” all through school their friends always called them JCONN; so the band name is based off their nick-name’s, squared!” “JCONN2” was based on melodic rock and roll. Connor’s has a voice that is distinctive and sounds as good as anyone on the radio today. In fact, hearing his Reverbnation #1 track “Fall Down” on 88.9 / 89.1 ClassX radio, is to hear the “wow” factor that so many local groups are missing. Connor’s band works every Wednesday at Shakey’s Pub and every Thursday at the Wilkat Tavern, playing two different shows and drawing two different crowds. The group also can be found in local pubs every weekend on a rotating basis, booked by club owners who clamor to get the group scheduled in. “We use Facebook and I love it because we will post where we are going to be playing next and people turn out,” Connor continued,” We have over 2,000 on our page now, and they are real good about helping keep our name out there”. When asked why his band gets to work so many nights a week compared to the weekend-only gigs most local bands play, Connor replied,” Because this group of musicians can adapt to any situation and are extremely versatile,” he continued,” For example, lead guitarist Jeff Foster, is arguably one of the most talented guitar players in all of Northern Kentucky”. Connor went on to explain that his group

knows so many different styles and types of music, that a different crowd comes out to see them perform. He explained,” A lot of bands, particularly when they’re just getting started, mostly draw their friends and family to see them, which is a great crowd when it can be there, but the reality is that their fans have day jobs and cannot come out too many

nights in support.” Due to the tremendous popularity of his music, Connor was urged to go back into the studio to once again record his own compositions. His new 6-song EP is on www.reverbnation. com where two of the tracks have already hit number one. The music is a mix of covers and original material and features the contributions from a couple of industry heavyweights. Connor enlisted the assistance of professional drummer Mike Haid of Modern Drummer Magazine and studio bassist Mike Georgian to help him create the perfect sound. He then called on longtime friend Elton Clifton of Clifton Audio to co-write and produce all three of the original songs, “Fall Down”, “Abigail” and “How Did I Get Here”. The Ep has a nice balance of well-known

classics like Cory Hart’s “Never Surrender” and Grand Funk RR’s “Captain” along with original songs that are as good as anything being played on the radio today. Bill Spry programs 88.9 / 89.1 ClassX radio, and has added both the covers along with the original tune; “Fall Down”. Spry said,” ClassX radio supports good local music and Marty is very good. His music is fresh and very melodic and fits our format perfectly. Everything we played went to #1 on our charts”. Music is Connor’s passion, while his wife Debbie is his one true love. “I’m forty-seven years old and far from perfect,” Connor candidly revealed,” but thanks to my wife Debbie and Jesus Christ, I have never been happier”. After a difficult year in 2011, Connor made wholesale changes in his life which has helped to

draw he and his wife closer, while making his music easier. As his children pursue their post schooling dreams, Connor is back out once again entertaining Northern Kentuckians with his humor and his music. 2013 is looking great for the talented Northern Kentuckian. With his renewed passion to perform and the addition of some mega talented musicians, Connor is looking to ramp up his musical career to see what can be accomplished. “Man, I want to tell you, things have just all of the sudden come together. Mike (Haid) and I have been working with our old friend Vance Best (guitarist for Head East) and Eddy Stamper on bass, and we are kicking ass” Connor enthused,” Seriously! Essence of

Pink Floyd

In the Bible (Luke 4:24) Jesus says, “But I tell you the truth, no prophet is accepted in his own hometown”… New Living Translation (©2007)

What was true then is still true today, even in the world of rock and roll. Jon Stankorb’s band, “SIGNS OF LIFE the essence of Pink Floyd” knows it too. “Everywhere we go, we draw between 1,500 - 2,000 fans to watch us recreate the Pink Floyd experience, except for here in my hometown”, he said. Stankorb lives in Indian Hill just outside of Cincinnati, and has made it his life’s work to recreate the total Floyd experience from the smallest details down to the perfect sound.

anybody out there, we are that good.” When asked if a new group means a new name, Connor laughed, “ Well believe it or not, yes, we’ve been calling ourselves the Rebels because of the guys going to Boone County High School, back in the day!” The group might not be through growing at this point either. “We have the chance to add Joey Huffman (keyboardist Matchbox 20) on keys, if we can work out the logistics of moving him up from Nashville”!” To hear for yourself what the buzz is all about, visit ClassX radio. com for a FREE download of the hit, “FALL DOWN”, or friend him on Facebook to find out where you can spend an evening, rocking along with him and the band.

excitement of a Pink Floyd concert. Six talented musicians and two dynamic female vocalists, along with four lighting video and audio technicians make sure we capture the vast and spacious Pink Floyd essence”. Every Signs of Life show utilizes authentic sound effects, engaging video and dynamic lighting effects to recreate the classic Pink Floyd feel. Each show features well-known Floyd favorites in addition to lesser known gems. “We play them all, TIME, RUN, MONEY, MOTHER, you name it, we are on it: and note for note to the record too”!

“There are many many bands out there doing a Floyd tribute thing, but ours gets it right,” he continued,” Our shows authentically capture the music, mood, emotion, and

Stankorb has studied every piece of video and record Pink Floyd has ever produced and prides himself on the fact that a Signs of Life show gets it right in the presentation. “Unlike most American tribute bands that jump around and ‘Americanize’ the show portion, we

try to enhance a Floyd fan’s experience by performing the way the boys (Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Nick Mason, Richard Wright) did it, in the English way as it were, of taking our position on the stage and building that aura of sound that lets the crowd get-off on a whole new level during the show!

The group just finished two monster sets in Dayton (1800 people) and in Louisville (1600 people) and have high expectations’ for their homecoming show on Saturday, the 11th at the Madison Theater in Covington. “We hooked up with 89.1 FM ClassX radio and are hoping that fans come out to see and hear what Pink Floyd is all about when we play at home, Stankorb added.

Rebel Forces Unite to

Conquer the Tri-State Not since the days of the civil war has the greater Cincinnati region been faced with such an overwhelming rebel assault. Cincinnati’s bona fide radio pirate, Bill Spry, and Northern Kentucky’s busiest attorney, Eric Deters, have combined their rebel ways in an effort to become the Kings of the Queen City. Deter’s can be heard on ClassX Radio in the mornings from 6-9, mixing classic rock with his legal musings and opinions. Adding the NKy celebrity, is the latest in a string of high profile moves Spry accomplished in 2012. “We have a new promotions team that has the station actively involved at all the concert venues, doing stage introductions and taking our contest winners back stage to meet bands. And we have nky L!VE, our brand new magazine,” Spry said.

set-up and broadcast his show live from the grounds at the St. Cecilia festival. That show is being packaged to sell as a 6-song EP in Europe when Howe tours there in 2013! According to Spry, while this is all obviously good radio and pretty cool to boot, it’s not anything really revolutionary. “You know, this isn’t anything new,” Spry continued, “It’s what radio used to be all about and used do all the time But I’ll tell you, it has just about died out here, and that’s one of the reason why I wanted to have my own station”. Stations used to send their jocks to a concert, have bands stop by their studios to play and talk about their projects, and host concert echo shows for listeners’ to enjoy while driving home from a show. “When I grew up, radio was filled with bands and singers that released music that was melodic and the cuts on their albums were considered worthy of airtime. It was the kind of music that made you want to crank up the volume and break the knob off! Radio used to

Spry’s media empire is the result of hard work and a genuine passionate love of music. “I love radio. My passion is for programming a station that sounds and acts like rock radio used to,” Spry said. To that end, he has ClassX Radio, working hard as its owner. Spry’s long-time show host , Eddy Mullet, has his own show on Friday night from 6-8, that features great classic rock mixed in with two-three artist interviews a week and splashes of local music. (Mullet also stays over to hang out during the Rock Show with Doug Singleton later that night, as well as cohosting a local Music show on Tuesday No Matter Who You Are, There Are Times And Circumstances Which nights called “The Kindred Sanction”) Require An Approach Only A “Eddy is such a music authority, that I BULLDOG Can Provide. just let him go on live when the guys call in to discuss their latest projects or tours,” Spry explained,” Eddy knows We will work smart and fight hard to both win your case and/or maximize its value at their musical history and is smooth settlement or trial. If it is a criminal matter, while asking questions and chatting we will do the same to win your case or with them about their work.” The station minimize punishment. This is our job and our promise to you. there was at least one open FM frequency still available in the Cincinnati market. The husband and wife team quickly formed their non-profit corporation and Spryex Communications became one of five corporations to file for the right to own and broadcast over the empty channel. “Only someone with Bill’s passion could have held-on as long as he did, his wife Rhonda said. Indeed, as eight years went by, one by one each of the other corporations were forced to abandon their business models, until through simple attrition, Spry attained his lifeling dream to own and operate a real radio station.

“We’re David surrounded by Goliaths, we’re the rebel good-guy force going up against the death-star. - B i l l S p ry work hard for artists’ back in the day, Spry mused. According to the ClassX Radio owner, the radio industry’s halcyon days occurred during the seventies and eighties when DJ’s were allowed to show-off their love and knowledge of music with their fans. He is correct; Album Oriented Radio (AOR) came about in the late sixties early seventies as a reaction to radio’s transition to a “Top-40 only sound. AOR stations quickly dominated their market by breaking acts such as Kiss, David Bowie, and Yes. Today people recognize these artists as classic rock and rollers, but the fact is that these types of acts could not get their music heard outside of local clubs before radio’s revolution. “Oh Yeah! Without AOR, bands like The Eagles or Lynyrd Skynyrd wouldn’t have had a chance in the old “three minutes and a catchy hook format that radio had become, Spry said, Can you imagine never hearing a songs like Hotel California or Free Bird, on your radio simply because they were too long?! Even more importantly these bands are still making brand new music today but no one wants to play them! In 1997, Spry initially took to the air with a Christian Rock format on 105.5, he called Free Radio 105.5 . Always a self-styled rebel, he and his wife Rhonda operated as radio pirates while they actively took part in the lobbying of the FCC that eventually led to changes in regards to who and how private citizens could become legal radio station owners with a new service now deemed Low Powered FM. It was while conducting this research; Spry discovered that

In 2006, Spryex Communications finally received their permit to begin construction on 88.9 FM. Upon receiving the permit,

Eric Deters a n d B i ly S p ry at C l a s s X r a d i o Spry quickly went to work and in only 8-days’ time had constructed his station! On August 6th that year, Spry signed onto the air of his new 5,000 watt station, revealing his gift to the tri-state; ClassX Radio. “I used to dream about being able to play all the great music these classic artists released, just the way they intended it to be heard. If two songs are linked together like on Journey’s INFINITY album with Feeling That Way / Anytime back to back, that’s how I wanted to play it. If one of my DJ’s wants to play (friend of the station) Mark Farner’s song, “I’m Your Captain”, I wanted it to be the full 9.48 minute version, not the 5 minute single version that ruins the great musicianship of Grand Funk,” Spry passionately

explained.

Everything Old Is New Again Before ClassX Radio signed onto the air, melodic classic rock had all but disappeared from tri-state radio. “I’m just like all radio listeners, sick to death of only getting to hear the same 20-25 songs over and over again,” Spry expounded,” So we play the one hit wonders and also the deep album cuts from artists like; Steely Dan, Heart, Joe Walsh, The Eagles, Toto, ZZ Top and all the rest.” The station has an impressive library consisting of literally thousands of albums and CD’s locked away in the “vinyl vault ” deep in the bunker from where the music originates. In addition to being able to play virtually any song ever released by a classic rock artist, ClassX Radio carefully collects and programs new bands that fit the stations format. A listener will be treated to a mix that can feature new artists, classic rock, and new songs from old acts. A recent 30 minute commercial free playlist featured new music from Joe Walsh (Funk 50) and Rick Springfield (You And Me), local Cincinnati band The Sinners “She’s The One”, Pink Floyd’s “Breathe,” REO Speedwagon, “Riding the Storm Out”, Kings of Leon ”Knocked Up”, and Kid Rock’s ”Lets Ride”.

While ClassX Radio does play some of the same artists as the Fox or WGRR, the difference is in the song choices the three stations make. On the day of this interview, both 92.5 and GRR played the same song by Heart. ClassX Radio also played a song by the Wilson sisters,

the difference being Spry had programmed the new single ”Dear Old America” from Heart’s new FANATIC album. “Right” Spry exclaimed,” There’s nothing at all wrong with hearing Barracuda, but the new Heart album is fantastic! And it doesn’t stop there, the new Donald Fagen (Steely Dan) the new KISS and the new ZZ Top are all hot, but if you want to hear them you’ll have to tune us in, because no-one else is playing them”. ClassX Radio seems to have found their niche in a crowded radio market. Like the well-known tale about the little engine that could, ClassX Radio has succeeded despite all the nay-Sayers and corporate types who sneered when the station first appeared. “Oh it’s definitely an uneven playing field,” Spry continued,” we don’t have the budget of most, so we have to be smarter about what we do, and it takes us longer to achieve some of our goals.”

Listener Supported

How ClassX Radio generates support is another of the big differences between them and the other rock stations on the dial. “All stations to the left of 92 on the FM dial are designated as non profit corporations. Which simply means we can let business’s be on the air with us as sponsors without the SCREAMING commercials like they do up the dial,” Spry said. The station holds two on-air fund drives each fall and spring, where listeners can pledge financial support. Eric Deters performed on air for 12 straight hours during the last drive, helping the station have its best ever Fall Drive. Fans can also help out through the year by logging onto the station’s web site (www.classxradio.com) and donating via Paypal. The station also has a traditional sales team that is able to meet and explain to new business sponsors that the only difference with a spot on ClassX Radio is in how the message is presented. The sales reps then go on to reveal the big tax advantage being on the air offers with ClassX Radio (compared to none using commercial radio), and a buyer’s eyes light up. Jim Carmichael works in the sales department and is another of Bill Spry’s big moves. Carmichael was working for a magazine that tried to market to the Northern Kentucky region and he has also worked in radio sales during his career. He came over to work in the sales department at ClassX Radio and loves to sit down with a new

business and tell the station’s story. “I can offer radio spots on air and print in our magazine in a combined package, that no other print and no other radio can offer. These campaigns’ really work too, which explains why we have over a 93% re-buy rate. Then I get to explain how their budget is a 100% write-off, which is only available through us!” While it’s true ClassX Radio does not have some of the advantages of other stations, they clearly have strength’s unique only to them. Their print/radio campaigns and tax advantages are just two of the many reasons why the station continues to grow and develop year-after-year. “We’re David surrounded by Goliaths, we’re the rebel good-guy force going up against the death-star,” Spry joked. “We’ve learned how to use our relatively small size to work in our favor,” he continued, “For example, since I program and own the station, I can make quick decisions when a sponsor, artist, or concert facility has a

As the station not only has lasted through the years but started to grow and expand, others began to notice. In 2011 Spry was able to add another 10,000 watts through a second channel that became available in Northern Kentucky, 89.1 FM. One of the biggest draw backs used to be the fact that 88.9 could get lost in static as a listener drove. With the addition of the strong Northern Kentucky tower, came the stations catch-phrase, Up One-Down One. A way to easily explain that if a listener hears static on one channel, simply flip over one place to the other. The newly expanded reach has brought a slew of honors including being named STATION of the YEAR by NKy Scene magazine and BEST RADIO STATION, by CityBeat Magazine. Another big move in 2012 was the addition of Cincinnati favorite Rich Apuzzo, to handle the weather reports.

Winter 2012-2013 Weather Outlook

There are a number of ways that people look at the changing weather and this year the typical weather-lover is thinking one of two things. Either the warm winter, spring and hot summer of 2012 will lead to a warm winter heading into 2013, or, all of that previous warmth means that we’re destined for a really cold winter ahead. The first line of thought is called “persistence” and it’s a legitimate method for short-term weather forecasting, but not usually for seasonal outlooks. The second line of thinking simply assumes that the same thing can’t keep going on forever and that one extreme will likely be replaced by an opposite extreme. Both are valid, but putting together an actual forecast involves much more than persistence or assuming that things must eventually change. Not only that, but in both lines of thinking we’re skipping a season, right? What about autumn?

Sure enough, August started hot with 8 of the first 9 days in the 90s, and it ended The analog temperature maps I created last summer for with five days in the 90s from the 24th through the 28th, this autumn showed colder weather for across the Ohio yet we had so much cooling between the hot periods that the month ended near normal in temperatures. Since then we have been much colder, with September, October and early November all coming in well below normal, making this one of the coldest Tri-State autumns in the past 20 years. How did I know we would turn colder? Did I just play the odds and assume that the heat would have to end at some point? No, it was much more scientific than that. I make longrange forecasts by comparing current global weather and ocean patterns, and even the strength of the sun, to past years. When I find past years that match up well with where we are now, I look at what happened in the months that followed and use that information as a guide to what we can

Valley and much of the central United States. The actual temperatures across our region were almost a mirror of those forecast maps. Below is the autumn analog and the October map for comparison (figure 1). Not bad, right?

Looking ahead, my temperature analogs for December, January and February are rather cold. Remember that going below normal in December and January is a much bigger deal than being below normal in October and November because December and January are already much colder months, so being below normal means that we’ll have some bitter days and nights, and it favors mainly snowfall from passing storms (figure 2).

Composite Percipitation Anomalies (inches) Dec to Feb 1917-18, 1945-46, 1952-53, 1976-77, 2006-07 Versus 1981-2010 Longterm Average

in different parts of the area. Secondly, there is an increased blizzard potential this winter, and just one of those kinds of storms can produce 20+ inches of snowfall alone.

I also expect the winter to be much colder than normal (from 175 to 550 total degrees below normal or -1.9 to -6.0 degrees per day). There are always periods of mild weather during the winter, and that won’t change this time, but the periods and intensity of colder air will easily offset the warmer days. At the time of this publication we have better than a 70% chance for a White Christmas.

(figure 2) Precipitation for the winter is forecast to be below normal, but winter produces about nine inches of total precipitation (liquid equivalent), so even if we’re two to three inches below normal, getting six inches of liquid as mainly snow would mean 60+ inches of accumulation. Is that snowy enough for you? I am not predicting that amount of snow, but I am expecting snowfall totals from 30 to 55 inches across the Tri-State area by the end of March. We normally receive about 22 inches of snow during that time (figure 3).

The reason for the large forecast range is twofold. First, forecasting snowfall so far in advance is difficult at best and many things can impact snow totals

Politics Be Damned,

My Life as a Speechwriter By R o b e r t J B e r ry It’s no longer too close to call. (I was worried about using all my long-distance minutes.) In case you overslept and haven’t heard, President Obama is in for a second term; Mitt Romney was a day late and a dollar short. You’d think with all his money, he would’ve budgeted better. Now that the election’s history, my role can be told. I did some speechwriting during the campaign. Like everybody else, I needed to see more political spots to help make up my mind. I hate deadline pressure! As a freelancer, I decided to whore myself out to both candidates. Let’s see if you can find my influence in Barack and Mitt’s heartfelt oratory? I tried to be impartial, but Mitt was my favorite client; he’d say anything I put in front of him! As a prank, I left a note on a cocktail napkin: “47% of the American public have some entitlement; feel entitled to jobs; to food; oxygen; entitled to watch if the shades are up. To entitlement.” To his credit, Mitt didn’t throw it out in a public speech, but he did skillfully pass it on, as an aside. He’s the best! Now I’m not one of those credithogs, but I was the one who penned Obama’s tide-turning words: “That is not factual! That is not what happened!” Course the rest is history. At first I put too much of myself in earlier drafts. Try to guess which

BY Jim Shoe Art Linkletter and Bill Cosby made fortunes off of kids being kids. Video clips of children doing what they do on YouTube can garner millions of views and change a child’s life. The five year old boy on a ride home from the dentist while still mildly sedated has been viewed so many times his parents have earned enough for his college education solely from ad clicks. Sadly, their attempts to have lightning strike twice, with clips of his younger brother have not worked out. Fame is fickle; the world loves humor and respects talent, and when a child has one or another, stardom beckons. When it actually happens to you and your family, it can be life changing, but seldom on a smooth journey. 17 year old Courtney Flege (pronounced “Fleggy”) is a student at Walton-Verona

High School and has been on the world-wide radar since she was four. “We had entered her into a local talent show (Little Miss Crittenden) and a judge asked her if she had a talent, to which she replied, “I can sing,” her mother Dena Flege said, “Her dad and I knew she liked to sing in the car with the radio, but we thought, oh boy, what’s she going to do.”

What she did was knock the judges out and win the contest hands-down after being handed a microphone. “She opened her mouth and belted out, “Last Kiss” by PEARL JAM, and everyone was just like, WOW,” her mother continued.

Courtney had the talent as well as the passion to pursue her goal of becoming a professional singer. Flege went on to sing as the opening act for JO DEE MESSINA in Blue Ash, after winning the chance in a singing competition held there. “She came out and just had the crowd buzzing,” according to her mother. “We knew we had to try to help her carry on.”

DEMPSEY’S

Her parents Andrew and Dena Flege have committed their family to helping her achieve her dream. “We moved to Cincinnati, so that she could attend and learn at The School for Creative and Performing Arts, and she and I lived in New York briefly so that she could sing on TV, at the Apollo Theater,” her mother revealed. Her parents describe her as having an ‘old soul’ who loves to learn and sing old Motown classics. At ten, Courtney took the stage at the Apollo Theater to sing ARETHA FRANKLIN’S ‘Chain of Fools’. Little white girls from Kentucky, had better be able to deliver, when tackling the ‘Queen of Soul’ in Harlem, under emcee Whoopi Goldberg’s critical eye. Flege had the crowd jumping to their feet to dance along as she easily commanded what can be one of the toughest audiences in the world.

American Idol had always been a Flege family favorite with people telling her parents to have her enter. When auditions were announced in Pittsburgh for the 2011 season, her mother and she packed a duffle and grabbed a Greyhound to see if Simon and company thought she had talent. “Exhausting,” her mother remembers,” we get to Hines Field for the auditions, and find out she was one of 17,000 there to be heard.” Ten at a time, hopefuls are assigned a number and wait, and wait…and wait…. contrary to what you might think, the

road to stardom, at least via the Idol route, is neither glamorous, fun, nor easy. No food or even water, except for what was available at the concession stands according to her mother. “We just sat and watched and listened,” Flege said, “there are people everywhere practicing and asking others to critique them, and it slowly dawned on me, 16,900 of these people can’t carry a tune, Courtney’s going through.” When it was finally Courtney’s turn to sing, as one of ten in her group, the judges let out an audible gasp as soon as she began, and just like that Flege earned her “first” golden ticket. From 17,000 hopefuls to 400 in a single day of tryouts, Courtney’s talent carried her through. “So we grab the bus and 6-hours later, we get back home,” Dena said, ‘until round two, back up in Pittsburgh.”

For the second round, the entire Flege clan of family and friends formed a caravan and headed north.

”Biggest crowd of supporters ever to attend, is what A.I staff told us,” her younger brother said, “17 people in day-glo green ‘support Courtney t-shirts’, waiting for her chance”. After an emotionally draining two-days of more try-out rounds, Flege survived all the cuts to finally earn the chance to go before the ‘stars’ of the show and sing for Randy, Steven and J-Lo.

“Oh my God, were we nervous,” her mother said, “they take her away and leave us with Ryan Seacrest and we all just stare at one another and pray.”

Idol host Ryan Seacrest waits with each contestant’s family while listening to feedback via an earpiece, from the producers’ down the hall. “So Ryan says, ‘Do you wanna go on a field trip’ and all of us follow him through all these long hallways until we get outside these double doors and he stops us,” Dena revealed, ‘then they ask us all to come in, and we see Courtney standing in front of the judges, and my heart is about to bust out of my chest.” What they heard next broke Flege’s family down. “Baby-girl: you got something special, it’s a yes for me,” Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler said. J-lo through her tears of appreciation, added, “it’s a yes for me,” and Randy chimed in, “it was always going to be a yes for me, welcome to Hollywood baby!”

Courtney’s twin brothers impromptuly grabbed Ryan Seacrest and hoisted him over their heads to body surf him through the group in their excitement. “I wish now that her story could end there,” said her father Andrew. “I hate American Idol and no one in my family even watches it anymore,” he added.

Earning a golden Hollywood ticket comes with many strings attached, according to her family. All the TV viewer sees are contestants skipping away with their tickets and family, but the reality of Reality TV is something different. “Five hours of stuff like B-roll film of her at Pittsburgh landmarks and the paperwork: unbelievable amounts of paperwork. Psychological tests on all of us and background checks on Courtney, her dad and I,” Dena said.

“We had to basically sign away her life to the show for the entire season: they owned her,” Andrew Flege said.

According to the Flege family, once the contracts are signed, the false face American Idol producers wear comes off and the reality sets-in. “Lord,” Flege said, “Even how they speak to you changes, they do not ask for anything-they command.”

Courtney was told the What, When, How, and Where of her life by Hollywood types. They had total control on where she could sing (No to the Reds for the anthem) what she could wear (more provocative clothes) and even what she could sing. “It was horrible,” Flege said, “they fly us out to Hollywood and she is just their puppet.”

Television shows needs to protect their intellectual rights and so certain contracts and guidelines make sense and are even necessary. The Flege family understands that and had no problem with that aspect. “I think the staff could have been nicer, more polite, but at the end of the day, we could deal with them okay,” said Dena Flege. So what turned their attitude around? “It’s all rigged” Andrew Flege said. “On TV, you see the kids all sing in lines of ten each

After being passed over by the judges in the Hollywood round, a camera was shoved in her face and Courtney was prompted for an emotional reaction. “She stayed calm and dry-eyed and refused to give them what they wanted,” Dena proudly said. Until mother and daughter were alone. That is when the entire experience finally caught up with the 16-year-old as she cried in her mother’s arms, “What did I do wrong?” According to the Flege’s, American Idol is a Reality TV show with people who sing and NOT a singing competition. “The show looks for a homogenized slice of Americana, people with a story or drama and not the best singers who entered the competition,”Andrew Flege says. So does Courtney still watch the show? “Nope,” Flege said.

Years prior he had quit KISS, the biggest rock band of the 70‘s (although he never quit being “Space Ace“). After a long break from the “biz” he was out to prove himself again. On his own terms. His music. His band. His decisions. Ace was so excited to be doing the only thing he ever wanted, to be on stage again.

The show at Bogarts was AWESOME! Ace was back (“and HE TOLD YOU SO!”) The excited crowd sang along with all the new songs and the KISS classics that Ace had written/played on. Ace was back in form. The consummate guitarist who just liked to play and hated all the over the top hype that Gene and Paul had made him live through every day.

In his last few years with KISS he was “medicating” himself to help get through. He hated playing the same old songs. He hated the “show”. He couldn’t just play

ClassX Radio & Bulldog Nation:

Radio Superbity in America BY E r i c D e t e r s

I’m enjoying informing, inspiring, entertaining, ranting and rocking every weekday morning on ClassX Radio. When we think about America, isn’t the first thought always freedom? Bill Spry and ClassX Radio gave me the freedom to program my show and let it rip and the result is what Bulldog Nation and the American Jury calls radio superbity. It can only happen with the freedom to program it and execute it. Only in America. Only on ClassX. I’d be a fool not to seize the opportunity to share what you will hear when you tune in 6-9 AM every

weekday on 88.9 FM and 89.1 FM.

We cover all the news from pop culture, sports, economics, legal news, local news, general news, national news, world news and “a little” politics. I also provide first hand reports on cases I have that are in the news. It’s pretty cool you can hear inside information about what a lawyer is doing on a case you are following and all, as always, with my client’s blessings. As we go into each break, rather than bumper music which makes you wish you could hear the entire song, we play an entire classic rock song worthy of the rock radio elitists who require originality or a “deep” track. Go find Rob Jungklas’ “Memphis Thing” and you will have an example of how we roll with our rock and roll. I won’t settle for any old song. It has to make you and me “feel good.”

What else will you hear? We have the only radio or television show in the tri-state which honors the soldiers who have lost their lives each day, a joke you will be anxious to repeat to your friends, a history lesson which will inspire you, a line from Shakespeare, maybe an Aesop fable, observations about life

and probably one or three rants from me trying to wake up the country or save America from apathy and stupidity.

We do it all at a pace which, let’s just say, isn’t slow. We also videotape the entire show with a television camera and video simulcast it live on classxradio. com and thebulldogsnation. com. We are the only radio show in the tri-state which does this every day. The show is also podcast on classxradio. com and thebulldogsnation.com.

Garrett Sabelhaus, formerly of WLW, is my board operator and Jake Slagle finds all our audio clips from the news. We will miss Joe Biden on the campaign trail. To inspire us, our studio is our Hall of Fame of American icons we believe worthy like John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, Farrah, Elvis and Shaft. You get the picture. We let Bill Clinton sit in as a cardboard cut out.

So don’t listen to the boring morning drive shows which put you to sleep or play lousy music when you can get fired up for the day. Tune into ClassX radio on 88.9 FM Cincinnati and 89.1 FM Northern Kentucky and Indiana and join ClassX Radio and the Bulldog Nation!

The Hidden (FOOD) Gems of NKY First a short introduction! I’m the Food Hussy and I’ll be hanging out each month sharing my culinary finds and favorites in NKY! I’ve been blogging for over 4 years in the Cincinnati/NKy area and I had a fairly deep indoctrination into NKY when I first moved here from Iowa because I worked in Covington. All of that said: I want to share with you some of my favorite food spots in Northern Kentucky – some you may know of – but hopefully not all, yet! DINERS

Diners are one of my favorite types of restaurants – I think I watched too many episodes of Alice as a kid. My favorite spot in NKY for this type of food stop, is with out a doubt, Franks in downtown Covington. Frank has all sorts of Buffalo Bills memorabilia around the restaurant, his wife is the main waitress and they have daily specials blue plate like meatloaf. What more do I need to say?! My favorite dish is the Flying Pig – a hand breaded tenderloin (an Iowa specialty) with BBQ sauce and pickles served on a toasted bun. They also have great big crinkle fries that I pair with a side of mayo. Mmm Mmm Good! So head to Frank’s and tell him the Food Hussy sent you! I had a fantastic batch of coworkers that indoctrinated me into what would quickly become my favorite lunch! My coworker is friends with the actual Greek owner George (always nice to find out its authentic) and he introduced me to a gyro. A gyro so huge – there was no way I could finish it! Even better thing are the fries – well the seasoning on the fries! A lemony seasoning

My sister spent two years teaching in Korea and while she was there I decided I should try some Korean food in her honor. My friend and I tried Chung Kiwha. Mexican is my FAVORITE ethnic food – I could leat it 7 days a week! What I love is finding something authentic and delicious – and La Mexicana is it! My favorite is the vegetarian tacos with mushrooms, cheese, tomatoes and sour cream and they are good! What’s even better? The GUACAMOLE! Yeah – seriously – the best guacamole in the city! It’s thick, chunky and a little spicy. I could just eat that for lunch...and uhm...I have. They also have some wilder options like tongue (not bad) and brains! Unless you’re feeling like Andrew Zimmerman on Bizarre Foods – I wouldn’t advise it.

ENTERTAINING

Last but not least in my secret tidbits is Vito’s in Fort Thomas. I’d heard rumor of singing waiters and had to experience it myself! We took a friend for his birthday and it was a hoot! The food is fine - fairly standard Italian fare and I was there a couple of chefs ago – but I have to say – the singing was a lot of fun. It’s definitely a “special occasion restaurantâ€? but we enjoyed it a lot. Vito’s Cafe 654 Highland Ave Fort Thomas, KY41075 www.vitoscafe.com
