SHORTLISTED 2013
Case Study Project: Jamie's Italian, St Petersburg, Russia Interior design: Martin Brudnizki Design Studio Light fittings supplied: two-tier brass chandeliers, lamp posts, table lamps, blackened steel wall lights and wall mounted spotlights.
northern lights
Jamie's Italian St Petersburg is located in a historical Russian mansion which boasts arched ceilings, exposed brickwork and a magnificent view over the city centre. Together with Jamie's in-house design team, Martin Brudnizki Design Studio created a stunning interior that combines the homely feeling of an Italian family restaurant with the grandeur of imperial Russia. Working from the designer's brief, Northern Lights developed a range of fittings to realise this vision. Two-tier brass chandeliers The chandeliers consist of two brass rings with fret-cut shades. The special pattern on the shades adds an artisan twist. The largest ring measures 3m in diameter and the total length of the fitting is 3m. Lamp post style fittings The lamp post style fittings were placed along the banquette defining the depth of the space as well as complementing the high ceiling. Featuring an antique brass body and filament lamp, the fittings form part of a rustic background which is in stark contrast to the modern furniture in the restaurant. Northern Lights also supplied other accent lighting including blackened steel wall lights and table lamps behind the banquette. All light fittings were supplied with clear instructions to ensure a smooth and quick installation on site. Northern Lights also co-ordinated shipping with the forwarder and the local contractor.

Please note: Northern Lights only supplied the central chandelier at Jamie’s Italian Perth, all other lighting was sourced locally by the team at Jamie’s Italian
northern lights
Bespoke chandeliers are a common feature in Jamie's Italian restaurants. They either complement or provide a dramatic contrast to the interior. Working closely with Martin Brudnizki Design Studio, Northern Lights designed and manufactured a large-scale crystal chandelier for the Perth site in Australia. The framework of the chandelier comprises three brass rings. Clear octagonal crystal strings are attached to the rings producing a cascade effect. Visible to the customers, the brass rings complement the rustic industrial look of the restaurant while the crystal strings add a hint of glamour to an interior dominated by recycled timber and burnished metalwork.

Case Study Project: Chaophraya, Edinburgh Interior design: Jonathon Morgan Design Associates (JMDA) Light fittings supplied: bespoke decorative light fittings
northern lights
With a stunning view over Edinburgh Castle, Chaophraya Edinburgh is one of the latest additions to the Thai Restaurant Group. Working together with JMDA, Northern Lights once again supplied a wide range of decorative light fittings throughout the restaurant. From dramatic chandeliers to sleek ceiling lights, the lighting helps create a contemporary and relaxing space. A main feature in the bar area is the rectangular brass rod chandelier. 172 brass rods of various lengths were installed in the ceiling plate which is 3m long x 1m wide. There is an acrylic tip to each of the brass rods which diffuses the light and adds sparkle. The light source is fibre optic. 330 glass globe ceiling lights were installed next to the giant fish tank - a recurring theme in the Chaophraya brands. The dark glass softens the light creating an inviting atmosphere as well as providing functional lighting. The private dining room features a three-tier oval fabric shade. The sharp lines inject a more formal feel while the golden inner lining adds a sense of luxury.

Case Study Project: PizzaExpress, Cirencester Interior design: Absolute / The PizzaExpress Design Team Light fittings supplied: polo hat wall lights and bespoke printed shades
northern lights
Working closely with the PizzaExpress Design Team and interior design practice Absolute, Northern Lights manufactured equestrian-themed bespoke light fittings, paying tribute to the nearby Cirencester Park, the oldest Polo Club in the UK. Polo hat wall lights The polo hat wall lights are a unique feature. After receiving the initial design brief from the interior designers, Northern Lights’ designers developed the technical drawings for the manufacturing processes. An opal acrylic diffuser was added to the hat to achieve the desired lighting effects. The design had to be adjusted and a cost-effective manufacturing process had to be developed to meet budget requirements. Bespoke printed drum pendants Miniature running horses were incorporated into the PizzaExpress signature black stripe shades as a reference to the nearby polo club. After receiving the graphic design from Absolute, Northern Lights had the fabric printed by a specialist printer and then we manufactured the pendants in-house.

Having designed the interior for the pub 15 years before, Lee Birchall, Director of the Warrington based interior design practice DV8 Designs, was tasked with refreshing the look of the pub without compromising its warmth and charm. Working closely with DV8 Designs, Northern Lights supplied a combination of bespoke and standard fittings to meet the requirements of the new interior scheme. Clear glass pendant The clear glass pendant features five clear glasses at staggered heights. The filament lamps produce a gentle glow adding to the charm. Cage pendants The cage pendants take us back to a time when a wire cage was often attached to protect the lamp. The simple lines of the cages also have a modern minimalist feel. The fittings were clustered together to make a real design statement. Northern Lights also supplied industrial style pendants, floor lamps and picture lights from both the Northern Lights traditional range and other suppliers.

Café Rouge, St John’s Wood, London AfroditiKrassa four-tier polished brass tube chandelier, projection wall lights, two-arm picture lights and bespoke table lamps.
northern lights
Established in 1989, Café Rouge is one of the longest established French bistro restaurant chains on the UK high street. The chain started a re-branding process in 2012 to make it more appealing to the younger generation in today's highly competitive casual dining market. It not only introduced a new menu but also revamped the interior. The new scheme which was developed by the London-based branding and design consultancy AfroditiKrassa, was inspired by the urban Parisian bistros whilst preserving the essence of the original Café Rouge. Each site has its own style which make it unique. Four-tier polished brass tube chandelier In the St John's Wood Café Rouge, the central feature is a four-tier polished brass bespoke chandelier. The chandelier features more than 100 polished brass tubes which hang off twisted braided flexes up to two metres long. With LED modules concealed in the brass tubes, the chandelier is not only a welcome focal point at the entrance but it is also energy-efficient. Other fittings Working on the design brief from the interior designer and lighting consultant, Northern Lights developed bespoke wall lights and table lamps for the restaurant and also organised the purchasing and delivery of light fittings from other suppliers. This ensured that all the fittings were delivered to site on time.

northern lights Working on the design brief from interior designer GP Studios and design consultancy UXUS, Northern Lights supplied a stunning ceiling feature for the new accessory department in Selfridges' London store. The ceiling feature comprises twenty graphic spheres with vibrant landscape prints. Suspended by ultra thin steel wires from the ceiling plate at different heights, the spheres form an impressive display. When illuminated, they give the impression that they are floating in the air. Due to the size of the spheres - the largest ones have a diameter of 1.2 metres - new innovative material and production processes had to be used. Northern Lights worked closely with the globe supplier in the sample development stages to deliver the dramatic end product which is central to the dynamic interior space.

Case Study Project: Moon Voyage rooms at The Alton Towers Hotel Interior design: Merlin Studios / Allison Pike Design Partnership Light fittings supplied: steam punk inspired bespoke light fittings
northern lights
Allison Pike approached Northern Lights early in 2013 to produce Steampunk themed light fittings for a room refurbishment at Alton Towers in anticipation of the new ride, “The Moon Voyager”. We were initially supplied with room visuals and Steampunk-style inspirational images in order to understand the artistic direction. Budgets were discussed and stock fittings from our traditional catalogue were chosen as the starting point on which to base the design.
Definition: Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction that typically features steampowered machinery, especially in a setting inspired by industrialised Western civilisation during the 19th century Our designers absorbed the inspirational images, producing design proposals with elaborate detail and finishes. They transformed our standard fittings into themed features to complement the room styling. We suggested a combination of finishes to give the impression of ‘put-together’ mechanical components and we used electrical conduit fittings and standard castings to route light fittings together. We also proposed re-finishing a number of lights with limited budgets to ensure they suited the room style.

northern lights Even when lighting is not the main concern, we still take on challenges that you may think were outside our remit. We were able to supply a ‘TV feature’: a large wall panel with just 2 small light fittings to route wiring from a plug socket to the TV. This was purely decorative; the main attraction was the frame and the conduit route combination in antique brass with powder-coated bronze and antique. We laser cut cog detail fretwork to fit around the switch panel and used re-finished pneumatic valve fittings to add detail.

Adam's Restaurant, Birmingham Heterarchy Interior Architecture crackled glass ceiling lights, bespoke wall lights with cream shades, black track lighting system
northern lights When Adam Stokes – who earned a Michelin star at Glenapp Castle in Scotland in 2011 wanted to open his new restaurant in Birmingham city centre, he asked Heterarchy to create a restaurant with an atmosphere of elegance and understated luxury. Working closely with Heterarchy, Northern Lights were tasked with developing bespoke feature lighting and a flexible circuit system which would allow the different lights to be operated independently. The results met the expectations of both the interior designer and the client. Crackled glass spheres suspended from the ceiling-mounted track create visual interest. These are complemented by more traditional spotlights. The three circuit tracks allow pendants and spotlights to be switched or dimmed independently of each other. For more mood lighting, bespoke wall lights were also planned and supplied. The restaurant opened in April 2013 and was awarded a Michelin star in September of the same year

In 2012 the Oxfordshire based brewery Brakspear launched their first managed pub – The Bull on Bell Street. It was located in a Grade II listed building in picturesque Henley-on-Thames. Together with Stephanie Dennett, the Design Manager at Brakspear, Hollington Architects transformed the venue, which had previously been used as a nightclub, into a sophisticated and relaxing space where contemporary elements blend harmoniously with traditional ones. Lighting is a key feature throughout the interior. From the elegant chandeliers to rustic ceiling lights using reclaimed wheels and bottles, they all contribute to create a unique space delivering an unforgettable customer experience. Cream pleated shade with glass accessories The oval shade is 1.2 metres in diameter and half a metre high. The different glass shapes add visual interest. Reclaimed fittings The interior designers were really creative in using reclaimed items. From olive picking buckets and old marine lights to reclaimed wheels and old glass water bottles, the eclectic selection adds a lot of character to the interior. Northern Lights were sent the reclaimed items and we used our lighting expertise to re-wire and re-finish them. The finished fittings not only have the bold and distinctive look of the original but they also comply with modern electrical regulations. Izel, The Conrad Hotel, Dubai WA International laser-cut ceiling domes
northern lights
Located in Conrad Dubai, the Izel provides a sensational Latin American dining experience in a luxury Arabian paradise. The interior design is exotic yet at the same time sensitive to the local culture. A prominent feature of the interior scheme is a set of large-scale laser-cut decorative domes – one and half metres high and ranging from three to five metres in diameter. The domes were designed and manufactured by Northern Lights based on patterns provided by the client. In order to keep the engineering integrity of the domes, smaller individual panels had to be manufactured first and then welded together. For example, to make the largest dome, which is five metres in diameter, a total of 18 panels were used.

Manchester House Keane Brands bespoke decorative light fittings
northern lights
Manchester House is the joint creation of Aiden Byrne, the youngest chef ever to win a Michelin star and Living Ventures, the operator of some of the most exciting brands in the UK restaurant and bar market. The project has two areas: a restaurant on the second floor and a lounge bar at the top on the 12th floor with a panoramic view over Manchester. In the restaurant area, the interior design and brand consultancy Keane Brands created a very individual space by mixing metal beams with modern upholstery and contrasting striking colours with a muted background colour. Working alongside Keane Brands, Northern Lights supplied a wide range of decorative lighting. From minimalist bare lamp ceiling lights at the entrance to the dramatic fibre optic ceiling feature at the Chef's Table to pendants using wicker shades, they all work together to enrich the unique dining concept of Manchester House – making fine dining accessible. Fibre optic chandelier A loom of 240 end illuminated fibre optic strands form the core element of this epergne located above the Chef’s Table. The fibres curve gracefully from the centre of the framework to each of the 20 articulated dishes where they conclude as pinpoints of light.. Metal lattice light raft The feature light is a merging pattern array of hexagonal profiles with lamp drop centres located at the pattern intersections. The intended ‘rust’ effect finish and exposed lamps emphasise the raw industrial style intended for this space. Scaffold pole lamp feature To accentuate the industrial theme of the space, actual scaffold poles from a construction site were employed for this luminaire. Bespoke hand-made frame enclosures were formed to house decorative filament lamps, suspended from an array of coloured braided flexes

Up in the 12th floor lounge, lighting is also a key feature throughout the area with giant metal floor lamps and fabric pendants. Special features such as bullrush lamps and multiple tube ceiling lights create a strong visual impact. Multiple tube ceiling lights The multiple tube ceiling lights were installed over the bar against an impressive display of drinks. Featuring a matt black outer and gold inner, the tubes protrude through the ceiling frame at various heights. Giant rolled metal table lamps for the terrace At 1200mm in height and poised on high top tables these lamps are an expressive statement. The lamps are custom-made by hand with steel strips welded concentrically around a vertical framework. The pattern arrangement creates a swirling vortex of lines Bullrush lamp feature The bullrush feature is a complex jigsaw assembly of floor plates which interlock and follow the profile of the external seating area. It was necessary to have bespoke fibre optic projectors manufactured to individually illuminate the 'bullrushes' to each sectional unit. The fibre strands are threaded through the plates and the corresponding hand-formed tube stems. Each strand has a glass end optic which punches light into the glass globes highlighting the delicate internal glass strands within the spheres.
“Northern Lights they were great to work with because they realised my creative intent. I found them very supportive and it was great to work with a company that are so design literate.” “They were able to understand the vision and were great at nailing down the detail and were not prepared to compromise.” “The brief was not easy. I needed them to help create an ambience of honey coloured soft lighting, which would counteract the grey drizzle of Manchester and they delivered on this in a short period of time and on budget...” Tim Merrifield, Head of Interiors at Keane Brands

The Pillar of Rock, Bolsover - JD Wetherspoon PLC Architect CT bespoke decorative light fittings including feature chandeliers and industrial style ceiling lights
northern lights JD Wetherspoon opened the Pillar of Rock in Bolsover as part of a joint effort with the local council to regenerate the area. Working with Architect CT, Northern Lights helped transform the disused building into a pub brimming with quirky features. A bespoke chandelier with welded steel chains and bare lamps results in a hard and strong urban look. This is offset by the more retro style ceiling lights. Featured in the bar area are the industrial concertina wall lights. The concertina arm is over 1.5m long.

Bo Lang Restaurant, London Shaun Clarkson ID fret-cut copper lined square tube overbar pendants
northern lights
Located in Chelsea, Bo Lang is a stylish tea house and dim sum restaurant. Interior design company Shaun Clarkson ID created a relaxed yet sumptuous environment with a marble-fronted bar, grey leather sofas and cut-out wooden screens. In order to complete the look they used oriental-inspired ceiling lights for the bar area. The interior designer turned to Northern Lights for solutions. Working on the design brief from Shaun Clarkson ID, Northern Lights submitted several proposals for approval. The final decision was made by the interior designer and client to use a cut-out pattern based on the wooden screen. Northern Lights manufactured the fittings based on the drawings from the interior designer. The whole process from design brief to delivery only took three weeks.

The Porch House - Stow-on-the-Wold Brakspear bespoke decorative light fittings throughout the pub and hotel
northern lights In the Cotswold village of Stow-on-the-Wold, Brakspear opened their second managed pub – The Porch House. The pub, which has 14 bedrooms, is located in a Grade II listed building, parts of which date back to the year 947. Visitors can still find a witch's mark on the fireplace – this was meant to ward off evil. Working together with Stephanie Dennett, Design Manager of Brakspear, Northern Lights developed a range of fittings to complement many of the original features of the building as well as injecting subtle contemporary elements. From central chandeliers made from antlers to elegant table lamps using recycled glass bottles, to traditional lanterns and spotlights in antique brass with brown braided flex, they all work together to create an interior that not only transports the customers back in time but which is modern and comfortable.

The Star Inn The City restaurant is situated in a converted engine house in the museum garden in York city centre. The building also has a glazed extension overlooking the river. Mixing design classics with quirky artwork, interior designer Rachel McLane created an interior scheme that strikes the balance between rural charm and modern glamour. Vintage fabric pendants with eye-catching colours bring a nostalgic vibe to the modern glazed extension. The classic eight-arm chandelier with metal ball adds a contemporary twist to the private dining room.

The Finish...
northern lights
Wet Spray & Powder Coat Our in-house finishing department has the facility to both ‘wet spray’ and powder coat. We can spray to almost any colour specified. Using the RAL colour paint matching scheme we can meet your specific colour requirements. RAL colour codes are a four digit number that gives a specific value to each of the base colours making up a specific shade. For instance RAL 3020 is known as ‘traffic red’ and RAL 6001 is known as ‘emerald green’. If you wish to know more about RAL colours, swatch books or chips can be purchased from www.ralcolour.co.uk. There is also an online guide at www.ralcolor.com but this is not recommended for ‘absolute colour matching’. Monitor settings can slightly alter the colour you see on screen from that which is mixed. RAL colours are available in both ‘wet spray’ and powder coat forms. We will also use the RAL scheme to match as closely as possible to any colour sample you may wish to use.
Fabrics The majority of our fabric shades are finished in the finest Indian Doupion Silk or the highest quality cotton. Our range includes most colours, the majority of which are readily available. We can produce fabric shades in many materials - from cloth, wool and yarns to parchment or vinyl PVC!. Most of these materials come in standard colour ranges and can even be specially printed to suit a specific colour or image that you might need to match.

Metal Finishes Our highly skilled manufacturing staff can produce light fittings from virtually any type of metal. Of course structural integrity and cost can affect this, but then we can ‘finish’ metals in many different ways to suit the application. Our finishes range from a simple colour spray or powder coat in any RAL colour you desire to more complex variations such as a patinated or verdigris finish.
Brushed Steel
Polished Stainless
Patinated
Polished
Antique Brass
Hammered Steel
Aged Brass
Burnt Antique
Polished Antique
Polished Brass
Verdigris
Splashed Tarnish
Chrome
Powder Coat
Sprayed
All these finishes, apart from specialist chrome plating are done in-house using specialist equipment. This ensures that the desired finish is achieved every time. It also means that there is no delay in meeting deadlines waiting for external finishing suppliers.
Veneers
Glass & Crystal
All of our veneers are applied by hand to ensure the best possible quality finish. The veneer can then be stained to closely match the wood finish you require. This can range from a light oak to a dark wenge wood finish.
Our glass and crystal products can either be specially manufactured or sprayed to match most colours. Special colours however do increase lead times.
Please note, however, that extreme heat and humidity can affect the glues used so consideration needs to be given to the placement of the veneer
We can also offer other finishes to clear glass such as sandblasting, frosting and etching. Fused glass pieces come in a more limited colour range this range can be seen at www.system96.com.
