Børge Mogensen Børge Mogensen 1914-1972 Børge Mogensen is known for creating furniture that is to live every day with. Børge Mogensen used his own home for a laboratory, on the philosophy that one’s own home was the best place to test the design and functionality. Børge Mogensen used all his surroundings for his artistic pursuits. Sudden ideas were pencil down anywhere. Even an everyday plant could become a victim of his spontaneity. His famous hunting chair, for instance, started its life one late night on a matchbox. Børge Mogensen started his career as a cabinetmaker in 1934. Then 1936-42, was further trained at Danish design schools of Furniture. In 1942, Børge became designer for FDB (Danish Co), and was a teacher at the School of Furniture 1945-47. In 1950 he founded his own office where he developed a close association with his former mentor Kaare Klint, and later adopted Klint’s approach to the simple and functional furniture Design. His Furniture intended not to be influenced by aesthetic abstractions or imaginative forms, just for practical needs and purity. J39 is Børge Mogensen’s most successful piece of design; American shaker style inspired by his former Teacher Kaare Klintland The Spanish Chair is Børge Mogensen’s masterful interpretation of a traditional chair type you could encounter everywhere in the ancient Islamic cultural areas - from Andalusia to northern India. Please note that all products sold on www.nlini.com are reproductions of the very highest quality.

Charles & Ray Eames 1907-1978 American architects designers and filmmakers. Charles Eames is famous for being first with the use of new materials in furniture design. It was in early 19th century, he won a scholarship to enter the University of Washington, after only a very brief stay the young Eames was thrown out because he stubbornly defended the controversial architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Charles Eames then began work in a studio, before he started his own architectural firm. He quickly gained international success and has since been named the most influential designer in 20th century. Charles Eames designs are exciting, using organic design language and new materials. His colleagues were Harry Bertoia, Eero Saarinen, Florence Knoll and Ray Kaiser, whom he later married in 1941. Charles and Ray’s interest in new techniques led them to experiment with fibreglass reinforced with plastic used in the seamless fibreglass shell chair which of course has always been much admired. Eero Aarnio (1932) is a Finnish interior designer, well known for his innovative furniture designs in the 1960s, notably his plastic and fibreglass chairs. Aarnio studied at the Institute of Industrial Arts in Helsinki, and started his own office in 1962. The following year he introduced his Ball Chair, a hollow sphere on a stand, open on one side to allow a person to sit within. The similar Bubble Chair was clear and suspended from above. Other innovative designs included his floating Pastil Chair (similar to a solid inner tube), and Tomato Chair (more stable with a seat between three spheres). His Screw Table, as the name suggests, had the appearance of a flat head screw driven into the ground. he was awarded the American Industrial Design award in 1968. Aarnio’s designs were an important aspect of 1960s popular culture, and could often be seen as part of sets in period science-fiction films. Because his designs used very simple geometric forms, they were ideal for such productions. Aarnio’s later works replaced the use of fibreglass with plastic. He continues to create new designs, including toys and furniture for children. Please note that all prod ucts sold on www. nlini.com are rep rod uct io ns of the very highest quality.

Finn Juhl (1912 – 1989) was a Danish architect, interior and industrial designer, most known for his furniture design. He was one of the leading figures in the creation of ”Danish design” in the 1940s and he was the designer who introduced Danish Modern to America. Juhl made his debut in 1937 when he commenced a collaboration with cabinetmaker Niels Vodder which would continue until 1959 and exhibited at the Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibitions, the 11th of its kind. Therefore his early chairs were originally produced in small numbers, eighty at most, because the Guild-shows emphasized the work of the artisan over the burgeoning industry of mass production. However, they were almost all reissued later in his career. The Guild Exhibitions were an important venue for the young designers who sought to renew Danish design, turning their backs on the traditional historicist styles, heavy and with ornaments and plush, instead creating modern furniture which fitted the new trends in architecture. The projects was highly controversial and Juhl’s first work met much criticism. His Pelican chair, designed in 1939 and first produced in 1940, was described as a ”tired walrus” and ”aesthetics in the worst possible sense of the word”. In spite of the initial criticism, Juhl’s work began to have an impact on the style of homes abroad throughout the 40s. In Denmark, however, his popularity did not reach that of his peers, Børge Mogensen and Hans Wegner, who were less radical in their designs and relied more on Kaare Klint, leader of the furniture school at the Academy and the nestor of modern Danish furniture design. Josef Hoffmann (1870-1956), architect and designer of consumer goods. 1892-1895 studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Baron C. Hasenauer and O. Wagner; it was in Wagner’s studio that H. started his career (assisted in the work on the Vienna city railway). The square is a commonly recurring motif in his work. Hoffmann was the pioneer of Viennese art nouveau, during the early years of the century he produced radical forms reminiscent of the abstract Cubist style, later changing to more moderate forms and finally he used classical elements - as was typical for his generation (Villa Skywa-Primavesi, 1913-1915); also introduced some elements of art deco. Awarded the Grand Austrian State Prize in 1950. Some of Hoffmann’s domestic designs can still be found in production today, such as the Rundes Modell cutlery set that is manufactured by Alessi. Originally produced in silver the range is now produced in high quality stainless steel. Another example of Hoffmann’s strict geometrical lines and the quadratic theme is the iconic Kubus Armchair. Designed in 1910, it was presented at the International Exhibition held in Buenos Aires on the centennial of Argentinean Independence known as May Revolution. Hoffmann’s constant use of squares and cubes earned him the nickname ”Quadratl-Hoffmann”. Please note that all products sold on www.nlini.com are reproductions of the ver y highest quality.

”sitting on columns of air” Marcel Breuer 1902-1981 Hungarian-American architect. Marcel Breuer design is famous for his bold departure from traditional wooden furniture and his ”radical” idea with a polished and curved metal tube as floating lines in space. Marcel Breuer spent 1920-28 at the Bauhaus furniture school, where he designed the first furniture in steel tubes. He taught at the Bauhaus from 1924, later as professor 1938-47 at Harvard University with Walter Gropius. Marcel Breuer modernist design satisfied his demand for industrial based design and architecture. His smaller buildings are characterized by low horizontal forms that stretch out into the countryside. Marcel Breuer larger buildings in concrete built in 1950 show a more expressive and brutal expressions as shown in St. John’s Abbey and University (1961) in Minnesota and the Whitney Museum of American Art (1963-66) in New York. Breuer’s brilliant insight was to use non-reinforced tubular steel, creating a ”floating” chair that approached his ideal of ”sitting on columns of air.” The cantilevered chair was his greatest commercial success and its design continued to evolve: the frame became lighter, seat and back more flexible with softer lines. Norman Cherner Although best known for his furniture design, Norman Cherner's work included almost all aspects of design: from graphics, glassware and lighting, to his pioneering work in prefabricated housing. Educated in the Bauhaus tradition of interdisciplinary design, he became interested in housing as industrial design. His first houses were built in 1948 for a cooperative housing development in Ramapo, NY. These homes were examples of this total design concept and included affordable furniture designed specifically for these low-cost modular dwellings. One of the first pre-fabricated houses in the United States was Cherner's "Pre-built". It was designed, produced and assembled in 1957 for the U.S. Department of Housing. After being exhibited in Vienna it was shipped back to Connecticut to become his first home and studio outside of New York City. PK Poul Kjærholm 1929-1980. Danish architect. Poul Kjærholm is known to combine form and function in an uncompromising design. He was formally trained as a cabinetmaker in 1949, he maintained a close association with the physical craftsmanship in wood and traditional processes, but his work was geared more towards mass production and the modern movement’s energy. Poul Kjærholm was a gentleman who was not afraid to speak his mind. Noted for his saying ”You can sit on a cardboard box - the problem is just that you get sore eyes from looking at it”. Kjærholm had a unique ability to combine the classical with modern functionalist furniture he designed and was recognized for his understated elegance and clean lines. He studied at the Institute of Crafts in Copenhagen where he would later teach. Poul Kjærholm is especially known for recliner PK22 (1957), stool PK33 (1959), folding chair (1961) and couch PK31 (1964). Poul Kjærholm was awarded the prestigious Lunningprisen in 1958 after which he worked as an exhibition designer in Denmark and abroad. Poul M. Volther 1923-2001 Danish architect. Poul Volther was known to focus as much on the design process as the final product, he belonged to a generation of architects with roots in craftsmanship. As an exponent of functionalism, he was opposed to fads and the aesthetic smartness loving the simple manufacture of fine materials. Poul M. Volther was a cabinet maker and later trained at the Art-crafts school. He was a teacher at what is now known as Denmark’s Design School, and left his mark on hundreds of young furniture designers with his sense of craftsmanship and quality. From the beginning it was clear to everyone that this Danish designer had a great future. His designs were something that had never before been seen. The Volther Corona chair that was designed in 1961 was not introduced to a wider audience until 1964, when it received much attention and recognition. Sori Yanagi, Tokyo (1915- 2011), attended art school in the city and worked from 1940 to 1942 in the office of the designer Charlotte Perriand. In 1952, he founded the Yanagi Industrial Design Institute, which created a prolific number of articles of daily use and furnishings. This successful synthesis made Sori Yanagi one of the most significant Japanese designers of the post-war era. In addition to furniture, he also designed lighting, glass objects, cutlery, children’s toys, metro stations, cars and motorcycles. Sori Yanagi was known for his unique forms, which brought simplicity and unexpected practicality into everyday homes through his industrial designs in everything from kitchenware and furniture to toys and even bridges. Yanagi never lost sight of aesthetic and artistic ideals. Yet his work was functional and practical, demonstrated by usage in the the everyday household day-in and day-out. Verner Panton 1926-1998 Danish architect and designer. Verner Panton is known to create designs that break with tradition. Panton was trained at the School of Architecture and graduated from there in 1951. In the first two years of his career 1950-1952, he worked with Arne Jacobsen, the very famous Danish architect and furniture designer, before starting and owning his own design studio. He was well known for his innovative architectural proposals which included a collapsible house (1955), Cardboard House and the Plastic House (1960). In the late 1950s, his chair designs became more and more unconventional, with no legs or visible back. In 1960, Panton designed the very first moulded plastic chair. The Panton chair (also called S-chair), this was his most famous and mass produced design, being a revolutionary technique at that time. Verner Panton lamps as Flower Pot (1968), Fun Lamp (1964), Ball Pendant (1970), and The Pendant (1977) are also examples of his innovative and futuristic designs in unusual combinations - in his beloved and colourful universe. What is Replica What is a replica and how is this similar with the original? As the word suggests, it is a furniture copy of an original namesake. At Nlini we try wherever possible, to follow the specifications of the original design classics. We also endeavour to produce our products in the same exclusive materials as the originals such as only the finest of Italian leathers. We manufacture furniture with the same craftsmanship as some originals and use only the finest materials; our aim is to not be able to differentiate significantly between the original and our replica. This is especially valid in all the detail. Nlini has chosen to focus on quality rather than price. We refuse to compromise if it involves any decrease in quality.

Should we be sceptical of replicas? Many will be sceptical of replica products and argue that it is ”not true” - but what is not true for replica goods, when exactly the design and materials are also the same? The only difference is that the furniture is not manufactured in the original works such as

196 | What is replica

Fritz Hansen. But it’s not that important to say where the furniture is produced, so long as the design and the materials are in order, and quality is of highest standard. There are not many reasons not to avail you of the option and buy new design furniture a lot cheaper at Nlini.

What you should be aware of when you buy copy furniture There are manufacturers in this niche industry that focus exclusively on price, which ultimately will not meet your expectations and eventually lead to disappointment. We at Nlini choose to focus on quality. We quality check all units produced individually, this means a thorough quality check in Nlini’s own QC Department at the factory so that all our furniture is properly constructed and meets not only Nlini’s high standards of craftsmanship, but satisfies our customers expectations. As an example; on other copies of the Egg designed chair, joints can be glued and seams machined to save costs during manufacturer. On production of The Egg collections from Nlini finest care is taken in joinery and chairs are hand sewn, as is the case with the original model.

Is it legal? Let us make it clear once and for all. It is 100% legal to buy generic furniture in England and have them transported to other countries within EU. You can safely buy replica furniture from England on the Internet where the copyright laws are less stringent than in many other countries, therefore it is legal to reproduce and sell copies of furniture 25 years after the declaration of the original design (as is the case with all the furniture we sell). When trading takes place within the EU, all the furniture is sold from our British company Nlini UK Ltd to the various countries perfectly in line with EU rules on free movement of goods within the EU. As an example this means that it is perfectly legal for European customers to buy generic furniture from our English company even though a furniture design is protected until 70 years after the architect’s death in Danish law.

Facts about purchasing our replica furniture VAT is charged at the United Kingdom rate of 20% in all cases, however no other tax or duty is payable if transported to any other VAT registered company in EU.

What about quality Quality is a matter of course for Nlini - We have the world’s finest designs, and we produce replicas, but they must correspond to the original, this is also true with regard to quality. Unfortunately this is not the case with many other manufacturers of replicas. We manufacture furniture in the same craftsmanship as some originals and use only the finest materials, our intention being that you are not able to differentiate significantly between the original and our replica. This is also valid for all the details in production of the finished article. Nlini has chosen to focus on quality rather than price, and on this we refuse to compromise, any failure in commitment to finest quality would mean end result of furniture designs 100% not the same as the originals.

Leather & Wool qualities Cashmere and wool blend Wool from Kashmir mountain goats are famous for softness and wool fibres that are thin, this makes the wool feel super soft. Animal fibre from the Tibetan Cashmere goat is very fine, long and very expensive because it can only be produced under specific climatic conditions. The wool is combed from the underside of the neck and chest from the coat before the first sheering. The fine cashmere wool is blended with stronger wool so the fabric can withstand the wear and tear that would naturally occur on furniture.

General information about leather Leather furniture is a good investment that is definitely worth protecting. This product information tells about real leather properties and proper maintenance. For most leather furniture Ox hide is used, it undergoes various treatments before they are suitable for furniture production. The raw hides are salted and sent to the tannery where they are first softened, cleansed of salt and blood residue, scraped clean and made free from water. Then the hides are divided into grain and split leather. Split leather is used for

200 | Leather & wool qualities

suede products, while the grain is used for furniture production. In the further process the selected grain leather is stained. The hides are dyed, tanned and softened in one process. Then they are dried, receive a final softening and coating. It is largely this final coating, which is essential for leather and how it subsequently must be maintained.

Aniline leather Aniline leather (also called natural leather) is coloured and has had a light coating, so it resists dirt. Unfortunately, many consumers are not familiar with aniline dyed leather. Many believe that aniline dyed leather is the best leather available, because the skin has the same colour front and back. (Indeed this is the hallmark of aniline dyed leather). But pure aniline leather has other features that sometimes may not meet consumer needs. The skin breathes and is therefore susceptible to stains. Furniture with aniline is very beautiful and comfortable and will give years of use if maintained properly. Aniline leather retains its natural structure and insect bites in the leather can be evident. Aniline leather is dyed in vats of aniline dyes, which penetrate all the way through the skin. There is neither a surface pigment nor a protective coating applied,

| www.nlini.com | info@nlini.com

only a slight coating. A manual antique finish can also be applied. Because pure aniline leather has a pigment applied to its surface, there will be variations in the colours of the entire skin surface. Also the lack of a protective layer makes this leather more susceptible to stains, dirt and fading.

Semi-aniline leather The term semi is actually misleading, in that means only partial. Actually a more appropriate name for the semi-aniline leather could be aniline-plus pigment. Semi-aniline leather is dyed and therefore gets a slight tint of colour pigmentation and a light coating that helps protect the leather from stains and dirt and makes it easier to clean. It does not give quite the same patina as aniline leather, but is also soft and retains its natural structure

Generally It is important that you understand the differences between semi-aniline leather and pure aniline leather. It is also important that you understand that one type of leather is more desirable than the other, depending on your needs and wishes each type of leather has its individual appeal. When choosing leather that is right for you and your lifestyle, its uses that it will be subject to are all to be considered. In general, softness and durability are at opposing ends - pure anilines give the softest, silky opportunities but they can also be scratched and susceptible to fading and staining. Semi-aniline leather has a harder and firmer surface because of its complete end treatments. These hides are the easiest to maintain and keep clean, but are usually not so soft.

Semi-aniline leather is also dyed in vats of aniline dyes, which penetrate all the way through the skin, but the treatment of semi-aniline leather goes a few steps further. After the leather is aniline dyed, a pigment is used on the surface to ensure a uniform colour on the upper surface of the skin. Finally a clear protective layer is used to help make leather stain and soil resistant.

Caring for Leather & Wool Leather

Washing

Leather we use requires little maintenance because all our leather furniture is treated with surface protection, both aniline leather and semi aniline leather are easy to clean and maintain, Light cleaning should take place at least once or twice a year to ensure a long life. Be aware that the bright natural colours on Aniline leather may be more sensitive to grease and dirt.

For a thorough cleaning, use demineralised water, which can be purchased in most supermarkets and mild natural soap flakes of good quality (1 / 2 cup soap flakes to 1 litre of water). Whisk soap in the warm water and use the foam (when the water has dropped to room temperature). Apply the foam across the furniture with a soft cloth without soaking the leather. When furniture is dry, dry thoroughly and polish with a dry soft cotton cloth. The leather may eventually need nourishment in the form of leather supplement. Note:

Location Never place leather furniture in direct sunlight or very close to a radiator. The colour can fade, and the leather can dry out. Avoid using cleaners other than specially recommended products. Use various grooming products at your own risk. Avoid sharp objects.

Vacuuming Daily maintenance of leather furniture is done by vacuum cleaner with soft brush nozzle, thus keeping the leather surface clean and free of dirt. Remember that leather is a natural product which should be dealt with sensitively.

Suede may only be cleaned with a vacuum cleaner and not with water or soap flakes.

Cashmere Wool Our upholstered furniture is manufactured in cashmere and Wool blending, this mixture is advantageous in that it is incredibly dirt repellent, thus easy to maintain. Moreover, the material is very durable. Vacuuming: Upholstered furniture requires higher cleanliness than leather furniture. Therefore, you should vacuum your furniture regularly with a smooth faced attachment, even if soiling is not clearly evident. Especially in homes where there are people in the house most of the day, you should be aware that there is always some falling dust on furniture. This dust “settles in the

yarns and, in time can give a greyish tinge, however with light regular cleaning; you can ensure that fabrics continue to appear attractive and presentable.

Washing If you are unfortunate to soil material, stains should be removed immediately by absorbing with white towel several times until stain is not visible. For dried stains, try to dissolve in lukewarm water. Spread the moisture over and around stain making the whole area moist. Continue to soak with paper towels and wash with lukewarm water. Depending on stain you may wish to use some mild detergent in water. (1 Tablespoon. to 1 litre). Dab off with dry towel. For grease stains on the furniture, you should use a kind of chemical cleaner fit for this purpose, remember always follow the instructions with the recommended product.
