New Laigh Kirk Manse June 2018 Hello folks, Summer is here. Our organisations wind down for the summer break, and well deserved too. We’ve had a busy session. I take this opportunity to thank all of our leaders and committees of our organisations for their hard work during the year. You all contribute your time and energy in presenting good programmes for all who attend to delight and participate in. Thank you to everyone who brings life and love to New Laigh Kirk - a place to belong - because we are church at the heart of Kilmarnock with the people of Kilmarnock at its heart. We would not be an effective witness to Christ’s love and service without the dedication and commitment, time and energy you give. Thank You. On 3rd June we say farewell to David Hume, our Student Assistant. David has been a welcome addition to our ministry team at New Laigh becoming a good friend. We have witnessed his growing in confidence and stature gaining valuable experience as he prepares for Ordained Local Ministry. David leaves us with a sense of the reality of ministry, the great and the good, and the not so great and good. We wish him every Blessing and he will remain in our prayers for a very successful ministry ahead of him. Even though we take a well-deserved rest and a family holiday during the summer, the work of our church carries on. Worship continues throughout the summer. We cater for you with two services beginning on Sunday 10th June with an all age worship service at 9.30am and at 11.00am a more traditional worship service with tea and coffee served immediately after the 9.30am service. The Family service at 9.30am in particular is lively and is especially aimed at families and children, so please come along. In a busy season of church life we are all juggling time and activity, especially those with families, running from one thing to another to the next. In the summer, we try to get outside. The days are longer. The temperatures are higher, sometimes. The grass and trees beckon us with 3
their rich green. It is another world from the long winters we now seem to endure. You have established all the boundaries of the earth; You have made summer...." (Psalm 74:17) Summer is showing the glory of God: the new angle of the rising sun; the stars in the night time sky; the greenery of leaves out of hard brown branches; the pushing up of colourful plants; early morning birdsong. These things and thousands more, are telling the glory of God, and declaring the work of his hands. Yes it’s good to have a break, we all need a rest. Yet even in our rest summer is for seeing Christ and showing the glory of God. Worship and prayer are essential ingredients for summer rest, these should never be neglected. When we behold Christ in our rest people will see him in our work. In our work and in our worship in our summer break Christ comes to us all like the refreshing summer rain watering the earth and giving life. Enjoy your summer rest. God Bless you
ACCESS TO CHURCH FOR ALL We cater for all ages at New Laigh and we don’t want to miss anyone out. Included with this magazine is a short survey from a Kirk Session committee tasked with gathering some information. We want everyone to enjoy all aspects of our church life - worship and participation in our organisations. Do you find any barriers to your full involvement in our church – for example, hearing loss, eyesight or mobility problems? If so, by telling us what would help, you will not be complaining, but simply pointing out how New Laigh Kirk can be truly welcoming to everyone. Thank you in anticipation of your responses. 4
A Farewell Note from ‘the other David’! It is with mixed feelings that I write my final contribution for the New Laigh Kirk Magazine – great joy as I recall the 8½ months that I have spent on placement with you, and a degree of sadness as I leave you to continue with my training for Ordained Local Ministry. When I joined you in September I was a bit apprehensive stepping into the ‘unknown’ – this is just how it must feel for all those coming to church for the first time! I need not have worried!! I was warmly welcomed by everyone and soon felt quite at home. Throughout my placement, I have had the opportunity to be fully involved in the life of NLK and have been able to witness the role of ministry within a busy and vibrant congregation – I am still discovering activities at NLK that I knew nothing about! There have been so many highlights during my time at NLK – the rededication service; the Street Nativity; my first time in the NLK pulpit; the Watchnight Service; the Lent Studies; the Easter Morning Service; assisting with Communion; ‘Boydie the Bunny’!; Elder’s Communion lunch; five young people professing faith; Stuart Layburn’s banter (?); Anne Scullion’s tablet…. and the list goes on! There are times of course when I got things wrong – but it is part of the learning process. I have really enjoyed visiting the church organisations and meeting so many enthusiastic people. I have also had the opportunity to visit some members in their homes – thank you for making me feel so welcome. I have learned so much by contributing to Sunday Worship. I have enjoyed these experiences greatly and I am indebted to Rev. Cameron (the ‘main’ David) for giving me so many opportunities to participate in worship – it cannot be easy to let the ‘new boy’ loose on your congregation. At this point, I would like to thank David for his support,
5
guidance, feedback and friendship – this has been key to making my time at NLK so positive, and I will be forever grateful. My next placement is at Alloway Parish Church with Rev. Neil McNaught. I look forward to the opportunities that this placement will provide and know that God is with me and is guiding me through the process of training. In closing, and to summarise – I have ‘had a ball’ at NLK! I thank everyone for their welcome, their support and encouragement, their kindness and their best wishes. I will be back to visit – and perhaps David might need pulpit supply at some point! I will keep in touch and look forward to hearing about developments in the life of NLK. Take care and God bless, David Hume, Student Assistant.

Update from Amy Hannah Communities and Family
Hey everyone! Summer is finally here (although we can always stay hopeful for the weather ha-ha) and here’s just a little update of all the things happening with Kingz Kidz. On the wind down to the summer break, we’ve had two All Age services; April’s was about the importance of communion and why we should remember Jesus, all the wonderful things he did for us and the importance of the Last Supper, all before he gave the ultimate sacrifice. May’s All Age was all about Pentecost and celebrating the church’s birthday with celebratory snacks, songs, games, crafts and more. Our next All Age service will be August 19th and All Age services will continue to run on the last Sunday of every month thereafter. Kingz Kidz will resume its sessions as normal in the new season every other Sunday. The junior Kingz Kidz have been exploring different stories within the Bible every week through crafts, organised and run by our amazing Kingz Kidz team, songs and story time. Our senior Kingz Kidz have had the chance to develop their faith through the stories in the Bible and from David’s children’s addresses, which have been cleverly interwoven into crafts, team games and activities, also run by our fantastic Kingz Kidz volunteers. Our junior and senior Kingz Kidz plan to join forces in the next session to make a children’s choir. Although we had a children’s choir before, we have decided to expand this by including all the children from the 7
Kingz Kidz and working through different songs and music that they will perform as part of services next year. June 3rd is our children and youth Prizegiving, where we will give thanks to both our volunteers and our children of the church, for all their contributions and efforts with the Sunday School. As part of our end of term celebrations with the Sunday School on June 3rd, we would like to invite all families of the church to join us on a trip to Largs beach from 1pm to 3pm! We encourage families to bring a packed lunch, or some money for food, to bring any baking or tray bakes and to join us for fun and games on the beach. Other events being organised for the new term also include a weekend trip for all children and young people to Barcaple; an outdoor activities and residential centre, from September 21st to 23rd. At Barcaple, children and young people can stay, climb, bike, try archery and much more. We’ve also organised a faith based programme that will include games, crafts and team building activities that will allow the children and young people to build relationships and explore faith. The full price for the weekend is £88 per person with a £12 deposit per person and we encourage these payments to be made as soon as possible. We are looking for leaders for the weekend also, so if coming along as a team leader for the children and young people is something you think you would enjoy, then please speak to me (Amy) as soon as possible. Music with New Laigh Kirk is also continuing over the summer, with our NLK Singers and NLK praise band playing for worship at our early morning services. We aim to expand our music and song choices over the summer and we encourage all to join in! Although our NLK choir will be having a short recess over the summer, we encourage everyone to join in with the music of NLK. From myself and the team of the Kingz Kidz, we wish everyone a happy and healthy start to the summer! Amy.

Update from Bethany McCaw Youth and Community Worker Five of our NLK young people joined the church in April. It was great to have all of their families supporting them and they were all touched by the support from their church family too. Emily, Nicola, Scott, Natalie and Becky are looking forward to serving various ministries throughout the church.
I had the opportunity to run a reflection space at Grange Academy in May for S2 pupils. Around 200 pupils attended over 2 days and took part in interactive prayer stations. Overall the young people engaged well with the stations and said they enjoyed taking part. They posed a lot of questions over the two days; some of the themes that arose were life after death and questions on identity. At the thankfulness station, many of the young people were thankful for their family and 9
several of them were thankful for Stevie Clarke! I’m thankful to the people from New Laigh Kirk who came along to help – their support was invaluable, answering young people’s questions and showing that Christians are just ‘normal’ people. Upcoming events: Family Ceilidh Sat 23rd June You're all invited to a night with friends, live music from the Hannah family ceilidh band and family fun! All money raised will go towards funding NLK young people on their summer mission trip. NLK Superheroes Summer Club takes place Monday 30th July - Friday 3rd August. Registration is now open - please let your friends and family know they can register by emailing their child's name and date of birth to bethanymccaw@icloud.com. Also if you can help in any way for Summer Club I would love to have you on the team! Thank you! Bethany

Seeing a rainbow through the rain When we are having a bad day, our smiles fade and it is hard to see a rainbow through the rain. Even then, however, we may find inspiration in hearing how God has helped other people against impossible odds. Recently, the Fellowship of Kilmarnock Churches heard stories of Christians who have managed to stay strong through persecution, abuse and even attempts on their lives. Listen to the story of Samiha, a Christian woman from Egypt. Samiha’s life changed instantly when a man ran into the women’s section of Cairo’s Coptic Orthodox Church, where Samiha sat, and detonated a bomb strapped to his chest. The peaceful atmosphere of the church was replaced with screams, darkness and smoke. Qalini, Samiha's husband, rushed from the men's section, desperately searching for his wife, but he couldn't find her. The attack claimed 27 lives … and left Samiha with half a face. Samiha says what happened next. “I found my face wrapped by medical clothes. The doctor asked me, ‘Is your name Samiha Atopi?’ I said, ‘Yes, that’s my name’. He then asked me, ‘Is your husband’s name Qalini?’ I said yes. Because I hadn’t been identified, they had given me a number. Ninety-nine. No one recognised me because of my face.” The doctors didn't offer much hope. “She won't survive,” they told Qalini. The doctors might have given up on Samiha, but God had another plan. Samiha's face still isn't what it used to be, but the side of her face that is still intact glows when she smiles. "The doctors thought it was useless to treat me," she says, "so they just came to check on me every now and then to see if I was already dead - but I stayed alive." Staff from Open Doors charity visit Samiha in her Cairo flat. Samiha's unwavering faith shines as she testifies to Jesus' presence with her through her ordeal. "I don't remember much of the explosion and the first days after it," she explains, "but I remember that I saw Jesus on the ceiling when I was lying on the ground after the explosion." She says that Jesus 14
continued to appear to her. She mumbled His name as she lay unconscious. "I would have been willing to die for Jesus, but the fact that He kept me alive so miraculously tells me that He wants me to live." Qalini has struggled with forgiveness towards the man who attacked the church that day. "But my faith tells me to forgive, he explains. "So every time I feel angry, I sit down with my Bible and browse to the Sermon on the Mount. There Jesus says we should forgive our enemies. It really helps me to read that part over and over again." Amazingly, Samiha doesn't struggle with feelings of anger. Her incredible response? "If I would meet the family of the attacker, the only thing I would ask them is: 'Do you know Jesus?' I pray they will find the right way." Samiha hopes to return to Hungary for more operations to alter her appearance. God worked a miracle for Samiha and support from Open Doors is part of that miracle. Prayer Group
I recently read this story in a collection of inspirational readings by Max Lucado, taken from his book, “In the Eye of the Storm.” I found it uplifting and thought I would share it with you. In Santa Fe in New Mexico there is a small but beautifully constructed building called the Loretto Chapel. It took five years to build and was completed in 1878, modelled on the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris. It was in the Gothic style, simple yet splendid against a background of desert hills. The sanctuary contained an altar, a rose window and a choir loft. However, there was a problem. The Mexican carpenters had finished the interior to their highest standards – flooring, carved doors and pews. The choir loft was also ready but could only be accessed by a ladder as the chapel was too small for a conventional stairway. The best builders and designers in the area were consulted but they all pronounced it impossible. There just wasn’t enough room. The Sisters of Loretto, for whom it had been built, did not want their dream place of worship to be spoiled so they did the only thing they could – they took it to God in prayer. They prayed for nine whole days, which is called a novena. On the final day a Mexican carpenter whom they had not seen before arrived and told them he had heard about their problem and had come to offer his help. He was given permission to go to work which he did with basic tools, great patience and skill. After eight months the prayers of the Sisters were answered. The stairway was a masterpiece of carpentry – two three-hundred and sixty-degree spirals of thirty-three steps led from the floor to the loft, held together with wooden pegs and no central support. It was made of a variety of hard fir, not found in New Mexico. It was perfect! 18
When the Sisters turned to thank the craftsman, he was gone. He did not ask for money or praise. He just supplied them with what they needed to praise the Lord. He did what no-one else could do. He was like the Master Carpenter, Jesus, who achieved the impossible for us. In his 33 years on earth, like the 33 steps of the chapel stair, he built a stairway from our world to God. He spanned the gap for us between where we are and where we long to be. The story is a reminder for us that prayer is the answer to every problem, no matter how insurmountable it seems. Jesus has the tools! The Prayer Group continues to meet on the first Wednesday of the month in the church at 7pm. We would love to have you join us but if you cannot come in person, leave your prayer request in the box in church or on the church Facebook page. And we only take half an hour, not nine days! Meanwhile, here are some topics for your own prayer time: Give thanks for the five young people who joined the church in April – Becky, Emily, Natalie, Nicola and Scott. Ask that God will richly bless them in their commitment to their faith. In this year of young people, pray for all the young folk in our church, in our community and throughout the world. As we celebrate 50 years since women were first ordained to ministry in the Church of Scotland, give thanks for the contribution of women to the church. Pray for the new Moderator, Rev Susan Brown. Pray for all those you know who need God’s special help at this time, for whatever reason. And pray for New Laigh Kirk, that God will send us good workers to fix the dry rot, leaky roof and paintwork!!! Lesley Wright

Highlights Klub In April we held our annual charity quiz night in aid of Breast Foot Forward. Once again we had a super night, with our winners’ team consisting of Miriam, Jenny, Barbara, Marion, Linda, Elizabeth, Fiona and Morag. Well done ladies! The winners!
Our men’s team came 2ⁿd again, much to their disappointment, and the wooden spoons went to Kirsty, Lilian, Carol, Ann, Marilyn, Margaret and Joyce.

We were pleased to welcome some newcomers this year and would be delighted to see them at any of our evenings. We raised £1168.75, which together with proceeds from our charity auction in February and a donated fee, makes a grand total donation this year to the charity of £1568.75 (including Gift Aid as appropriate). Our overall total now raised for this excellent cause is £14,195.50 and our heartfelt thanks go to all who came along on the night and all those who donated or contributed in any way at all to the success of the evening. All the money raised in Ayrshire goes to Crosshouse Hospital so it really is a case of charity beginning at home! By the time you read this we will have enjoyed our end of session visit to Lime Tree Larder and Seamill Hydro for afternoon tea, and we start back after the summer break on Monday 3rd September. We are aware that the run up to Christmas is very busy, so please put another date in your diary – our Christmas outing is in the afternoon of Saturday 15th December and promises to be a wonderful experience. Details will be in the syllabus in the next magazine, but meantime please keep that date free! Thank you very much for your continued support, and wishing you a very happy summer break (hopefully with some good weather!) New members are always welcome – contact me on 543488 or Angela on 534622, or speak to any of the committee. Eileen Murphy, Chairperson

NLK Walking Group Our weekly Wednesday Evening Walks around the grounds of Dean Castle Country Park have recommenced, as has our programme of monthly weekend walks. Whilst the weather on Wednesday evenings has (at the time of writing) been quite cold, it has for the most part, been dry, with a few glimpses of sunshine. We have explored some of the new features and paths in ‘The Dean’ including the new exit route to New Farm Loch, which we followed back to the car park. The Wednesday evening walks run each Wednesday evening (weather permitting) from early April to late August. We meet at the entrance to the main car park at Dean Castle Country Park – and people just turn up if they fancy a walk! Whilst some people are ‘regulars’, others turn up when they can manage, which is great as there are different people to chat to each week. All ages and walking abilities are welcome. We walk at a pace and distance to suit the differing needs of walkers. By the time you read this magazine, we will have had three weekend walks this year. The first was on a Saturday afternoon in late March, around the grounds of Dumfries House. In April we were blessed with a beautiful warm, sunny afternoon for our visit along the shores of Loch Doon, near Dalmellington, where we enjoyed a pleasant walk in good company, followed by a welcome cup of coffee and Millionaire’s Shortbread. We were able to watch the nesting Ospreys live on a TV screen in the café. By the time the magazine is printed, the May outing – to Whitelee Windfarm on the afternoon of Sunday 13th May– will have taken place (weather permitting). Plans are being finalised for the June walk – our annual ‘Grand Day Out’ to Arran, planned for Saturday 23rd June. Initial information is printed elsewhere in the magazine, and on the New Laigh Kirk Facebook page. Look out for further information in Orders of Service. There will be a short information meeting after the service on Sunday 10th June for anyone who might be interested in going. 22
There will be three walking routes – ranging from easy to difficult - to suit different walking abilities. In July, the meeting will be on the afternoon of Sunday 15th July – to Chatelherault Country Park, near Hamilton, meeting at 2.30pm outside the Visitor Centre. Plans are still being made for our August meeting – which will be a family outing to Large/Greater Cumbrae. Further details will be posted on the church website, the church Facebook page and in Orders of Service. Watch out for details! People of all ages and all walking abilities are welcome on our walks. We try to tailor walks and pace to individual needs, with places to pause for a rest, when required. On our weekend walks, we always choose locations with a café and somewhere for a ‘comfort stop’. We’d love to have you join us for some light exercise, good company and chat. Ellen Stewart
Badminton Club The badminton club is for all ages (16 and over)and levels of fitness. We meet every Tuesday in the lower hall 7.15-9.00pm we have a laugh and enjoy the games. We will start back up after the holidays mid to late August. . Alan I’Anson

Music and Movement We finished our session on 8th May with a trip to Luss, Helensburgh and finally our High Tea at Willowbank Hotel in Largs. On the day the weather was changeable, rain at Luss, dry up at Helensburgh but the sun came out at Largs giving us a lovely drive down the Clyde coast home. The next session will start on 18th September and will be “Under New Management”! Anne and Mildred
We would like to express our thanks to the ladies of the Music and Movement for their support over the past eleven years. We would not have a club if they did not turn out in all weathers, good and bad. We would also like to thank them all for the very kind gifts we received at our “retirement” and with Jean, Christine, Kay and Margaret best wishes as they took over. Anne and Mildred

I am standing upon that foreshore. A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength and I stand and watch her until at length she hangs like a speck of white cloud just where the sea and sky come down to mingle with each other. Then someone at my side says, "There! She's gone!" "Gone where?" "Gone from my sight, that's all". She is just as large in mast and spar and hull as ever she was when she left my side; just as able to bear her load of living freight to the place of her destination. Her diminished size is in me not in her. And just at that moment when someone at my side says, "There! She's gone!" there are other eyes watching her coming and other voices ready to take up the glad shout, "Here she comes!" And that is dying. Hospital Visiting Due to the inadequate provision of patient lists to ministers of the church, knowing who is in hospital is impossible to determine. This includes Crosshouse, Ayrshire Central and Ayr Hospitals. David and Morgan have no way of knowing if our church members are in hospital unless they are told. Please use the Pew Card, telephone or email to inform him if you know of someone who is in hospital at any time. Your help in this matter will ensure we maintain effective pastoral contact with our members in time of need. David
