WEDDING EXPO TIPS Liz Enriquez-Phillips of NC Wedding Expo You’re engaged! Congratulations! So now what? It’s time to start planning and what better way than to visit a wedding expo? Wedding expos, or bridal shows, are a great way to get ideas and to meet professional vendors in person to see if you like them and their work. Here are a few tips to help you navigate the NC Wedding expo as well as future ones.
1
EMAIL. If you haven’t created a wedding e-mail, don’t stress! You can always forward those from your personal e-mail or update your contact info with the vendors you meet. It can be easier as a bride to have a separate wedding e-mail to plan your wedding without other e-mails getting in the way.
2
LABELS. Why mailing labels? An expo can have anywhere from 20 to 100 or more vendor booths, all offering great deals or giving away a fabulous prize. Imagine writing your contact info 15 times or more — it can get exhausting! An easy solution is to have mailing labels printed out with your name, address, e-mail and of course your wedding date.
3
KEY ITEMS TO BRING. If you have an actual planner or an app on your phone make sure you have it handy if you want to book a meeting with vendors to get to know them more. Your wallet, credit card or checkbook — If you found a vendor you absolutely love and if your date is a popular date take advantage of the show specials and put down your deposit.
4
YOUR TEAM. Select a few choice members of your entourage to join you and to have fun at the show. There’s free champagne at the NC Wedding Expo and lots of tasty samples. Bring your close pals whose feedback you value, who will let you dream. The show is all about getting ideas and meeting the vendors that can make it work for you.
5
SWAG. At most shows you’ll receive a bag prefilled with vendors’ information, but not every vendor will have a chance to have items placed in the bag, so you will still need to grab some information from them at their booths. A lot of vendors also have swag for you to take. Feel free to take promo items that you will use but don’t worry about grabbing everything. If a vendor insists you take more treats, by all means do so. Try to leave your coat and large bags in the car so that your hands are free to pick up all the goodies.
6
COMMUNICATION. Come with questions! This is a chance to talk to your prospective vendors before you meet with them for a consultation. Make a list of key questions you have for choice vendors. Vendors want to connect with couples who genuinely show interest in their services or products and hope you choose them. At the same time they understand that there are many talented individuals and if you decided to go with someone else, it’s OK to let them know.
7
HAVE FUN! Remember, any day you visit an expo is a day to have fun! One way to ensure you have fun is to make sure you wear comfy shoes since you will be cruising around for at least two hours sampling and viewing vendors’ work. Grab a light breakfast or lunch to make sure you’re not starving but still have room to try samples! Take lots of pictures of anything that gives you inspiration. Use hashtags that are unique to each show, such as #NCWeddingExpo or #Notyouraverageexpo and check in on Facebook too! Don’t forget to snap a few with your beau and dream team to capture the memories at the show! If there is a photo booth take advantage and get sassy with your poses! Armed with these tips, we hope you enjoy your experience and are successful at this expo and future ones.

Still Waters Vineyard kate & chris
On a warm day in May, Kate and Chris tied the knot at the lovely Still Waters Vineyard in Paso Robles. There were a lot of DIY touches, from the flowers, to the party favors and even the centerpieces, that made this wedding truly unique. Kate’s father made the “LOVE” sign that was on display while the bridesmaids wore similar metallic-colored dresses that they each picked out.

Wedding Color Trends for 2016 Pantone’s Rose Quartz and Serenity
For the first year ever, Pantone, the authority on color trends, has announced not one but two colors for 2016. Serenity and Rose Quartz were chosen, showing that 2016 is the year of soft colors and pastels. When planning your wedding, it can be quite exciting to gather inspiration from the “it” color of the year and check out the color boards on Pinterest to get ideas on how to incorporate these two hues for your wedding day. Not only is the color a beautiful harmonious blend of two shades, it helps to bring out the mindset of tranquility and inner peace when viewed.
Leatrice Eisemen, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute said, “With the whole greater than its individual parts, joined together Serenity and Rose Quartz demonstrate an inherent balance between a warmer embracing rose tone and the cooler tranquil blue, reflecting connection and wellness as well as a soothing sense of order and peace.” This duo is also quite flattering when it comes to beauty applications and offers a variety of lip, cheek and eye palette options that looks great in almost all skin tones. It also looks great in all nail finishes — matte, metallic and glossy. Accent with silver for increased sparkle and drama or

Chuck and Sonja’s wedding day was beautiful! The day started at Cambria Pines Lodge with a first look. The gardens never seem to end and there were many places to take photos. The ceremony at Robin’s Restaurant was truly special, with music performed by Sonja’s children and a special presentation by Chuck’s daughter. Sonja’s father was the officiant, which added a heartwarming moment.

Wedding veils complete bridal look Metro Services The perfect dress is on the wish list of many a bride-to-be, but no bridal ensemble is truly complete until the bride chooses her veil. Veils have been worn by brides at their weddings for centuries. Veils can be traced back to the Middle East, where veils helped protect against the weather while also preserving the modesty of the bride. In Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome, veils were used as protection against evil spirits. According to popular wedding website The Knot.com, until Vatican II, all Catholic women were required to have their heads covered in church, including during their wedding ceremonies. Veils were worn for this purpose, but they also symbolized trust in the groom and his love and companionship. Some Christians also see the veil as a visual representation of submission to the Church and to God. Others think of the veil as another beautiful accompaniment to their bridal gown, without attaching any additional meaning to the veil itself. Veils come in various lengths and can complement the style of a wedding gown. They also tend to add glamour to brides’ looks. Here are the types of veils from shortest to longest.
• Blusher: Blushers cover the face, though some extend only to mid-cheek on the bride. • Flyaway: Flyaways cover just the back of the head. Shorter veils may work better on petite women. • Shoulder: Shoulder veils are about 20 inches in length and will hit at the bride’s shoulders or just below. • Waist: Waist-length veils cascade down to the middle of the bride’s waist. • Fingertip: These veils extend down 38 to 42 inches, brushing against the bride’s fingertips. • Waltz/Knee: For a dramatic look, many brides may opt for waltz-length veils, which fall to the back of the knees. • Chapel/Floor: Veils that extend to the floor may be referred to as “chapel” or “floorlength” veils. Such veils cascade slightly behind the bride. Veils can complete brides’ wedding day looks. Shorter veils may be comfortable to wear throughout the day and evening, but brides may want to consider detachable veils if they are selecting lengthier options.

Music Choice
How to approach music on your wedding day Metro Services Music often plays an important role on festive occasions, and wedding days are no exception. The right music can make a wedding day that much more meaningful, while the wrong music can make a couple’s big event memorable for all the wrong reasons. Though music selection might seem like one of the easier decisions couples must make, those about to tie the knot typically must make a host of music-related decisions regarding their wedding day, including whether to choose a live band or a deejay to perform at their wedding receptions. While the reception is when music might be most on display, couples planning their weddings must think beyond the reception when setting the musical tones for their weddings. Ceremony The ceremony itself often sets the tone for a couple’s wedding day. A beach wedding, for example, often creates a laid back atmosphere, while a ceremony held in a large church or temple often sets a more formal tone. Music played during the ceremony also goes a long way toward setting the tone couples hope to establish. When choosing music for the ceremony, couples should first consider the venue where they are tying the knot. Some, such as houses of worship, may have rules pertaining to what can and cannot be played inside the venue. Classical, hymnal or processional music often makes the best fit when weddings are taking place in more formal venues. Outdoor weddings tend to give couples more leeway. But in general couples don’t want to choose any music that’s too loud or over-the-top for their ceremonies. Keep in mind that while the music played during the ceremony can set the tone for the day, this music can vary significantly from the music played during the reception. A favorite performer may not be appropriate during the ceremony, but that doesn’t mean the couple can’t dance to that artist’s music during the reception. Live musicians can add a more elegant feel to the ceremony, but such performers also can be costly. Playing prerecorded music may not be as elegant as having a live performer, but it
can cost a lot less and still make for an enjoyable day and evening. Reception Many couples prefer deejays to live bands for their wedding receptions. Deejays can play favorite songs as couples and their guests know them, while bands can only play their own renditions of those songs. Another thing to consider when choosing between a deejay or live band for the reception is the venue itself. Some venues are smaller and unable to accommodate a full band, while others may not have ideal acoustics, making it difficult for a live band to sound as good as they might in a more music-friendly environment. The formality of the event should also come into consideration when choosing between a live band or a deejay for the reception. Deejays spinning the latest top 40 hits may stick out like sore thumbs at especially formal weddings, while a classical orchestra likely won’t fit into the laid back theme of a beach or destination wedding. Couples tying the knot outdoors may need to consider equipment when choosing bands or deejays to play their weddings. For example, some venues do not provide equipment, such as microphones and speaker systems, to couples for their ceremonies. Renting such equipment can be costly, but couples can often skirt such charges by hiring deejays or bands who lend couples their equipment during the ceremony. Deejays or bands who will loan and set up the necessary sound equipment for outdoor ceremonies merit extra consideration. When discussing music to be played during the reception, couples must consider their own musical tastes as well as those of their guests. A wide range of popular music tends to go best at wedding receptions, as guests are more likely to dance to songs they recognize. Avoid any music that has the potential to offend guests, opting for lighter, happier tunes instead. Whether hiring a band or deejay, couples should make a list of no-play songs or artists and make sure that such lists are included in their contracts. Music plays an important role on couples’ wedding days. Though choosing music for the ceremony and the reception is often fun, couples must take such decisions seriously.

Your Day to Shine Metro Services All eyes are on the bride and groom on their wedding day. Feeling beautiful and dapper can boost a couple’s confidence and ensure they look back on their wedding photographs and videos with pride. Certain beauty basics and makeup and hair strategies can help any bride look spectacular on her wedding day. The following are some dos and don’ts of wedding day beauty preparations. DO employ the services of a professional hairstylist and makeup artist. Professionals have the experience and tools of the trade to help you to look your best. From contouring to make your face seem slimmer to enlarging the appearance of small eyes, some tricks of the trade are best left to the pros. DON’T forget to schedule a trial run. Make this appointment several months before the wedding day so you have ample time to work with your stylists and experiment with colors and hair arrangements to fit your personality and the style of your gown. Take plenty of pictures and notes so you will remember what needs to be on hand for the wedding day. DO allot enough time for the wedding day beauty appointment. If you will be going to a salon, block out two or more slots instead of one. This way the stylist does not overbook and will not feel rushed. Many brides opt to have stylists come to their homes. There may be an extra charge for this service, but it may be well worth the cost. DON’T make any drastic changes to your appearance right before the wedding. This includes changing your hair color or texture, extreme tanning, using colored contact lenses, or chopping off all of your hair. It’s better to wait until after the wedding to change your style.
24
Luke & Liz Phillips Photography Make Up and Hair Artist Mandy Buechner airbrushes makeup on bride Nicole at the Madonna Inn.
DO bring a veil, headpiece, hair extensions, and any other accessories to your hair consult. This enables the stylist to practice working with these items. DON’T tweeze or wax brows too close to the start of the ceremony. Redness and swelling are common side effects of tweezing and waxing, and they can be difficult to mask with makeup. Instead, take care of hair removal a day or two prior to the wedding. DO exfoliate your skin prior to the wedding. This doesn’t necessarily mean you should endure a harsh fruit acid peel or another procedure. You can exfoliate with a gentle washing of your skin with a nubby washcloth to remove any dryness and errant flakes.
Be smart about wedding beauty preparation reactions and see how well they wear. DON’T wear too much under-eye concealer or one that is too light of a shade. This can draw more attention to problem areas than remedy them. DO bring a pain relief medication in case a tight hairstyle or headpiece causes a headache. DON’T forget that men need a little help as well. Exfoliation and moisturization can help dry skin. Guys should use a new razor and plenty of cream before shaving to avoid irritation. A dusting of finishing powder can banish shiny noses and foreheads for photoready faces. Chances are more photographs will be taken of a newlywed couple than at any other moment in their lives. Certain beauty dos and don’ts should be followed so couples put their best faces forward.
kelseaholder.com
Moisturize well to ensure a smooth palette for makeup application. DON’T wash or condition hair the day of the wedding. Intricate styles tend to stay better when hair has a little grip. “Dirty” hair is easier to work with than shiny, freshly washed locks. If you must wash, remember to thoroughly dry your hair before going to your appointment. DO wear a little extra makeup than you are accustomed to wearing because it will show up better in photos. However, do not wear so much that you look clownish. A makeup artist can help you achieve the right balance. DON’T have bridesmaids wear makeup that is bolder than yours, especially red lips. No one should upstage the bride. DO experiment with any products you haven’t used before to test for allergic
