Thanks to your generous donations during the Holiday Kettle Campaign and donations throughout the year, we will be busy again this winter, helping the folks of local communities of Atascadero, Santa Margarita,Templeton, Pozo, Carrisa Plains, California Valley and Creston! Ninety percent of your donations stay right here in our local communities. With your donations, The Salvation Army will again be able to provide those in need with several ways, including utility assistance, rent assistance, clothing, summer activities for children, food assistance as well as provide toys and food vouchers at Christmas.

Located near the Atascadero Lake Park, the construction of the beautiful “Faces of Freedom” Veterans Memorial was initiated by the Atascadero Veterans Memorial Foundation. A 501C3 Non Profit Organization, the AVMF was founded specifically to design and to build a World Class Veterans Memorial here on the California Central Coast with a completed value of nearly $1,000,000. Built to honor all of America’s Veterans, the Memorial has three unique components: Hero’s Wall, the “Faces of Freedom” Statue, and “The Pathway to Freedom.” The Hero’s Wall specifically honors over 231 San Luis Obispo County Veterans who have paid the ultimate price with their selfless service and sacrifice to our nation. The “Faces of Freedom” Statue represents an artistic timeline that honors our nations’ military heroes from WWI to the present. The final component is “The Pathway to Freedom” a 20,000+ engraved brick pathway that leads to and embraces the Veterans Memorial. The Pathway’s purpose is to provide a place to honor both Veterans and Active Military in two ways: First of all, bricks may be engraved with the name of someone who currently serves or has served this great Nation; Second, it gives those who have not served an opportunity to show their support for our Veterans through a family or business brick. These engraved brick

This class is a fun way of inspiring and motivating students in their love of cartoons and storytelling. Students will learn how to create their own cartoon characters, working in a humorous “Sunday Funnies” style, even if they’ve never drawn before. Students will learn warm-up and imagination exercises, as well as be able to draw humorous, simplified faces and figures, cartoon animals and more. Students will then create their own comic strips with their own characters, going through the whole process of penciling, lettering, editing, and inking their work. The comics will be put together into and ebook (on a flash drive) to bring home. Questions? Email the instructor at raytoons@yahoo.com 3698.541 Fri 3698.542 Fri

Instructor: Karen Clanin, 466-3775 or

Karen Clanin has been instructing classes at all levels since 1969 and started instructing for the City of Atascadero in 1979. The Beginning Dog Obedience class will cover sit-stand-down, walking on a leash without pulling, come when called, sit & down stay. Karen’s methods are mostly positive reinforcement, making the learning fun for the owner as well as the dog. For the 1st class, bring your dog on the collar you have and the leash you have (no harnesses please). Proper equipment will be discussed the first class. Also, bring a smelly, tasty, easy to swallow training treat. Karen suggests keeping the treats in a fanny pack so they are easy to get to. A copy of your dog’s immunization record, available from your vet, must be brought to the first class for Karen to keep. Class is scheduled for 1 hour, but may run over slightly so please allow the time. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult as they may require assistance. This class is not for aggressive dogs, if you have questions about this contact Karen and she may meet you privately for evaluation. Please no wolf or wolf-hybrids in class. The first class will meet at the Lake Park Bandstand, after that the class will be held at Karen’s facility at her home. Please email for directions if joining the class after the 1st week. kclanin@ sbcglobal.net

Bank robbery suspect is still at large Female suspect is also suspect in Pacific Grove robbery Heather Young ATASCADERO NEWS

ATASCADERO — A woman suspected of robbing Pacific Western Bank in the Vons center near Starbuck’s is still at large and being sought by the Atascadero Police Department and the FBI. According to the APD, the robbery occurred on Thursday, Feb. 14 just after 4 p.m. APD Sgt. Gregg Meyer said the suspect did not use a weapon during the robbery, but passed the teller a note. He said he does

not know if the note stated that she had a weapon of some sort. “She’s probably a professional, not from the area,” Meyer said. The APD obtained photos of the suspect from Chase Bank in Atascadero, taken about an hour before Pacific Western Bank was robbed. Meyer said he speculates that she may have been planning to rob that bank, but something got her attention and she left. While she was captured on camera, Meyer said that she was not doing banking

business at Chase Bank. “She had what is called a demand note, that she showed the teller,” Meyer said. “The teller followed her instructions and she left — very quickly.” Meyer said it is typical protocol for tellers — and cashiers in other businesses — to comply with demands for their safety. Meyer said that she is also suspected of robbing a credit union in Pacific Grove on Dec. 31, 2012, because the suspect is of a similar age and style. Dur-

ing that robbery, the suspect exhibited a firearm that she had in her purse. “It’s not typical to see an older female committing bank robberies,” Meyer said. Although it is believed that the suspect has left the area, officers are asking for the public’s assistance in locating the suspect. The police department asks that if the suspect is familiar in anyway to call the APD immediately. To report any information related to the crime, call 461-5051.

Retired Cal Poly agriculture instructor Joe Sabol explains to Jill-Anna Myers’ sixth-grade class what a “scion” is and how it will be grafted onto a new apple tree root.

San Gabriel sixth-graders build their own apple trees Creig P. Sherburne ATASCADERO NEWS

ATASCADERO — San Gabriel Road Elementary School sixth-graders got a sweet treat on Friday. They built their own apple trees. The two sixth-grade classes were visited by the California Rare Fruit Growers Association’s Central Coast chapter — a group led by retired Cal Poly agriculture instructor Joe Sabol, who led the classes through the grafting process. Sixth-grade teacher Jill-Anna Myers praised Sabol’s energy and joy. “It’s why I loved him at Cal Poly,” she said. “He loves what he does.” It was reciprocal. Sabol said that he had Myers in a class “100 years

ago,” and that’s part of why San Gabriel is the only elementary school he and his crew visit. Another volunteer said the group would head as far south as Santa Ynez and as far north as Solodad, giving demonstrations and letting children — mostly high schoolers — graft their own apple trees. Students began with a lesson from the energetic Sabol while other Rare Fruit Growers worked outside whittling bits of apple shoots with Swiss army knives. Once Sabol ran through the process, students went outside to pot their own roots and splice in Fuji apple scions — supplied by former San Gabriel Road Elementary School teacher and current Committee for

Atascadero Public Schools representative Kathy Peterson. The freshly grafted apple trees were stored in one of the school’s gardens, each tagged with the name of the child who built. At the end of the school year, students will take their apple trees home to plant them. Peterson said that while no one knows how many of the trees still exist, whenever she brings the project up around former students, she hears about trees still producing fruit here or there. “I plan on some day eating off this tree,” sixth-grader Justin Fetzer said. For more information on the California Rare Fruit Growers, go to www.crfg.org.

ATASCADERO — Design work on the Del Rio Road/El Camino Real interchange project will begin now that the Atascadero City Council has awarded the contract for design to the Wallace Group. According to a press release issued by the city of Atascadero, the contract includes planning and design of three roundabouts — two at the freeway interchange and one at Del Rio Road and El Camino Real. While the city will front the costs of the interchange, Frace said in June 2012 that the city expects to get a total of $4,887,394 from Walmart and the Annex when the project is built out. Walmart’s portion of that is $2,269,425. The city will receive a $250,000 payment from Walmart when the entitlements are final. A payment of $600,000 is due at the time of grading. The balance is due at the time that the building permit is issued. The city has $800,000 in traffic impact fees already in the bank that could be utilized for upfront costs. If needed, Frace said that the city could borrow $1.5 million from the wastewater fund, which has more than $10 million in it. The money would be paid back with interest using future traffic impact fees. Work on the project has been delayed due to a lawsuit against the city of Atascadero by Save Atascadero. The lawsuit will go to court on Tuesday, March 19 in Paso Robles. Public Works Director Russ Thompson said that while the Walmart/Annex project has been delayed because of the lawsuit, work on the interchange is moving forward. If Save Atascadero were to succeed, then he said he’d like go to the council to delay the interchange project. “We’re moving through at the same time [as the lawsuit as] to not further delay the project,” Thompson said. ‘The Colony’ musical will get a new audience After almost 20 years, beloved musical holds casting call Creig P. Sherburne ATASCADERO NEWS

ATASCADERO — After nearly 20 years, “The Colony” is back. The musical about the founding and building of Atascadero has been dusted off and will see new audiences in July. All that’s left is casting. And rehearsals. And set-building. “So we’re having auditions in March,” producer Dianne Greenaway said. “We don’t have a community theater in our community — we have some in our schools and our churches do some, but really none of it is community theater. This is it, this is our shot to do that. So anybody who wants to be in a play can audition.” The play was written Anet Carlin and Colleen Goulding

and was presented in two acts over two years in the mid1990s. It never really continued, Carlin said, because it was just too much work with too few people to shoulder the load. “Starting a play is like starting a train,” Carlin said with a smile. “But I think the audience always liked it and that people always wanted to know how it ended.” “I was in the show the first year,” Greenaway said. “The second year, I had a toddler and was just too busy. But because of that I got involved with the idea of Tent City.” In the intervening years, Greenaway said, the script got lost and the original music got lost. So when the idea to bring the play back to life as part of

Atascadero’s centennial celebrations came about, there was a lot of work to do. Fortunately, Greenaway said, somebody at the Chamber of Commerce knew somebody who had a VHS recording of the play. From that recording, both the script and the music got re-written. And historian Lon Allan was brought in to write a sort of bridge from the second act to the epilogue, bringing the story to a close. Carlin said she was inspired by “The Ramona Pageant” and “Oklahoma!” to write “The Colony.” “The conflict is there’s a guy who says, ‘look out there it’s nothing and it’s going to stay nothing,’” Carlin said. “The first act is the day they

laid the cornerstone. The second act is called ‘the wedding’ and it’s a celebration of life in that the traveling schoolteacher marries a widow.” Greenaway said she expects the cast and crew to be anywhere from 60 to 100 people. She also said that this year the musical will probably be the best version ever. “In the [intervening years] Atascadero high school choir and drama have really raised the bar,” Greenaway said. “We have a huge talent pool.” The play will go on at Sunken Gardens with historic city hall as a backdrop on Saturday and Sunday, July 20 and 21 at 5 p.m. and will be free of charge. Auditions will take place

at Community Church of Atascadero on Friday, March 8 from 5 to 10 p.m. and again on Saturday, March 9 from 1 to 4 p.m. and also 6 to 9 p.m. If callbacks are needed, they will take place Sunday, March 10 from 1 to 4 p.m. Anyone trying out should bring a 30-second monologue, plan to sing 24 bars of a song and bring sheet music for accompaniment and dress as for a job interview, with shoes that facilitate movement as the musical will have plenty of dancing. For more information, go to www.atascadero.net/pageant or call Greenaway at 7123947. To see a short trailer for the play, go to www.youtu. be/8YCizyMgexg.

Hello Atascadero! I’m Charles Scovell and I’m running for City mayor this year. Many of you know my Dad Chuck Scovell from his Tree Service, Scovell’s Tree Surgery, as well as, my grandmother Ruth who has been selling flowers and walnuts at San Luis Farmers Market for more than 30 years. We are a local family as many of you know, and I’ve decided to throw my hat in the ring for Mayor this November 4th. I own my own Tree Service; Charlie Scovell Tree and I am proud to work with my hands and be a small business owner here in Atascadero. I believe that being on the city council should not earn you any money, and am fortunate that my chainsaw has no use in city council meetings. I was a little concerned at our last election to see my Dad’s old buddy running unopposed for mayor with the many new challenges our town is facing. So, instead of struggling to purchase a house here two years ago, I decided to go to college and run for ASCC President as our sitting Mayor successfully did. I won by 3 votes and being Student President/Trustee of Cuesta College has been a tremendous stepping stone in fulfilling my dreams. I Co-chaired the Student Community Liaison Committee with Cal Polys President where we worked on Town and Gown issues. I was the first Cuesta President to draft legislation and successfully debate and pass a Law at our Student General Assembly. I was selected to present to the rest of the nation’s students in Washington D.C. on “How to Be an Effective Student President.” At Cuesta, I excelled in English and was paid to tutor in the Student Center. I’ve mastered parliamentary procedure, and the workings of the government to be able to help our town thrive once again. My oldest son lost both his uncles within a few years of each other to the drug problem that has crippled our town, I refuse to sit by and watch our best and brightest go down the drain. James Freeman Clarke said, “A politician thinks of the next election, and a statesman the next generation.” That’s why I’m running for Mayor of Atascadero 2014. I don’t want to camp out on our town; I’d like to serve my town and then run for Congress of the 24th district and serve my State. I’d like to stop the raising of the fees so that we can make money off revenue and get businesses going and fill all the empty buildings in town. I’m a Republican, but extreme conservatism has forced out the little man, and we’ve ended up with the biggest corporation in America (Walmart) as a result. I remember wanting to tackle the smoking issue at Cuesta College and Terry Reece the facilities director saying something that stopped me dead in my tracks. He said, “Is that what you want or what the students want?” It shouldn’t take the Supreme Court for the people of Atascadero’s voice to be heard and realized. I understand the brevity of what I’m getting into, and the 250 dollar a month stipend as Student Trustee, isn’t much less than the 300 offered for Mayor of Atascadero, and I’m sure the board packets are just as thick here in Atascadero as they were at Cuesta College. Do you want our Farmers Market out of Albertson’s parking lot? What about a real City Pool? Do you want to see businesses invest in Atascadero? Community events our town can count on? Do you want to see Stadium Park built with real venues that will generate real revenue, instead of suppressing our town with fees? If you answered yes to any of these questions then vote for me Charles Scovell!

Paid for by The Committee to elect Charles Scovell for Mayor of Atascadero 2014
