Wildflowers in full bloom By RUTH ANN ANGUS For Morro Bay Life

The rains came and already in March flowers began to bloom by the roadside. In a good rain year the Central Coast bursts into bloom almost everywhere. Wildflowers are delicate and don’t have a long life. So don’t delay, get out on the road because this year looks to be fairly good. Probably the most popular spot for folks who love wildflowers is found in the eastern part of our county along Highway 58. As you approach Shell Creek Road, you can’t miss it. The fields are bursting with miles of yellow flowers. People come by busloads

licing through the air with the audible ripple of ribbons, creating a blur and flurry of color rising into the lower stratosphere is just part of the enjoyment of flying a kite at the Morro Bay Kite Festival, set for April 23 and 24. This year founder and all-around kite guy Shan Farmer will be celebrating the event’s 10-year anniversary, with a full schedule of free kite flying fun. “I came up with this idea 10 years ago when I was visiting Oregon and attended their huge kite festival there,” he said. “I thought ‘wow, look at all these people out on a dreary day just having a blast flying kites. Why not in Morro Bay?’ Since I own Farmer’s Kites in Morro Bay it was a natural event for me to host. Since the first year we have grown a lot with about 100 attending in the first year. We now have thousands that come from all over the country to have fun.” The masters, those that spend their days in practice as professional kite flyers, will fly many of the large aerial art type kites. The event schedule includes events both

All the way from Woodstock, New York, sharing the deep-seeded roots of American folk are Mike and Ruthy, making their debut on the Coalesce Bookstore stage in a SLOfolks production Friday, April 15. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the cost to attend is $20. Mike Merenda and Ruth Ungar have been a folk duo since 1995 and over the years have performed on the same stage

with notable musicians such as Pete Seeger and have even co-written work with Allen Ginsberg and Woody Guthrie. After many years cutting their chops in the folk music scene as a duo, they have formed new band, replacing previous band, Mammals, with The Mike and Ruthy Band. Now married with a little one in tow, they are hitting the music scene harder Please turn to Page 5

The Interact Rotary Club of Morro Bay High School is holding its first ever Gala fundraising dinner and silent auction at Rock Harbor Church on May 14. Approximately 30 students belong to Interact Rotary and have participated in many local civic functions. This year the presidency of the club is held jointly by Dylanne Fee and Hannah Benchner and there is a board of directors of 10 students. “Some of the events our club has volunteered with are Save the Pier in Cayucos,” Fee explained, “and Coats for Kids, as well as helping with serving at Evening With Heart for Morro Bay Rotary and doing trash and beach clean-ups.” These students also have the opportunity to attend a three day leadership camp called RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) that is sponsored by local Rotary clubs. Now the club is attempting their first international project with help from Forest Ratchford, who is working as liaison with The Heifer Project

TNT Boot Shop and Shoe Repair Business opens in new location on North Main Street By ALLYSON OKEN For Morro Bay Life

Healing soles one boot at a time is the passion and trade of TNT Boot Shop and Shoe Repair in Morro Bay, now in their new location at 3250 North Main St. Owners Tony and Dayna Mininni and their two sons, Aaron and Dolin, have been in the business of shoeing people for nearly 30 years. Tony took up the passion for making, repairing and selling boots and shoes of all types from pervious owner and brother-in-law Trevor in 1989. Last year Tony said he was in poor health so his son Dolin came home to learn the family business. “Dolin and Aaron are the future and Dolin came back at first to help while I recovered, but found a passion for it,” Tony said. “Dolin gave up school at Cal State Bakersfield and came home to learn the trade that I had learned from my brotherin-law. Dolin will be the a third generation with our son Aaron to work here and we take great pride in that.” TNT Boot Shop is family owned and operated with the third generation working behind the counter and in the back, buffing, nailing, shining, repairing soles, and even making orthotic shoes for customers in partnership with a local podiatrist. Tony will actually take a person’s favorite pair of shoes and make them orthotics. With measurements given to him by the partnering podiatrist, he replaces the soles with a thicker composite material that allows the customer to leave with their best foot forward. “It is really fascinating work that I enjoy very much because in today’s day and age, I can actually add the orthotic to the person’s favorite shoe where way back when there were orthotic shoes that were awful looking,” Tony said. “It is just

We also carry a large selection of designer boots, work boots and cowboy boots. The guys that come in here can find sizes too. We carry up to size 15 in the

store and can order larger if needed.” Tony and Dayna are a great team, Tony repairs the boots and shoes with their two sons and Dayna is a leathersmith working on strap and zipper refittings for boots, sandals and shoes. TNTs is really a onestop shoe shop, keeping the tradition of the cobbler alive.

Come visit Tony the boys and Dayna and they will save your shoe soles for another hundred miles of pounding pavement. TNT Boots and Shoe Repair is open Monday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information call 772-8364.

That’s when you need the Tech Tutor. Clint Kempster helps businesses and individuals on the Central Coast with their technology issues. A resident of Morro Bay, Kempster aids businesses with their decision making process as to the best systems and hardware for their operation. “It’s business marketing for the tech world,” he explained. “I see myself as a concierge for people and businesses looking at computer purchases and systems, as well as web sites.” Kempster feels that just upgrading from the

hardware and systems you may have now will not really advance your situation. “The days of fix it are over,” he said. “New technology offers better ways to accomplish your computer needs. Individuals might be better off with a computer that offers less. They really don’t need all the bells and whistles.” Nowadays a person’s “system” can consist of a desktop computer, a laptop, a tablet, a Smartphone, and a TV. And all these components work together. Kempster doesn’t just look at what machine or program you need but at the overall picture including how you should market your business with technology. Kempster advises not to just rely on reviews, techies, or your eight year old nephew when it comes to looking for a new device or program since this is not always the simplest or most cost effective solution. While he doesn’t do outright web development, he does teach individuals and businesses how to accomplish their own web sites. “I can help set up a business or person with a Wordpress web site or one of the other packaged web site programs available such as Square Space, Weebly or Wix,” he said, “that can be maintained easily and cost effectively or I can maintain it without severely impacting the budget. The important thing is to find one that is the best for their marketing needs.” Kempster holds workshops throughout the state on the use of a variety of social media sites. He feels it is critical for anyone in business to have an active presence on Linked In. He also recommends a business Facebook page. A few sessions with the tech tutor can make computer work fun again and take the mystery out of all the new technology making your business easier and adapting it so it works best for you. Together, Let’s Grow!

M

A letter from the CEO

orro Bay Chamber’s staff and volunteer Board of Directors has been gaining strength and building momentum these past few months! There has been talk of our “new energy” out and about in the business community, and so I thought to announce some of the projects we have in progress here at the Chamber of Commerce. • Cooperative Mixers • On Friday, April 15th, from 5:30p•7:30p, we will debut our new format. Three new Chamber members • Yoga Center of Morro Bay, Ray of Light Massage, and Libertine Brewing • will contribute space, food and beverages for the business community to gather together for networking and socializing. In this way, participating businesses can share in the effort it takes to produce a successful event! (April venue: Yoga Center of Morro Bay, 1000 Main Street, Morro Bay) • Partnerships • The Chamber is partnering with educational institutions to produce measurable results from research and marketing projects. One example: Cal Poly senior thesis students will be working with the Chamber to produce a Business Walk this spring. Data from this effort will be shared. Further, the Chamber has partnered with our city’s tourism entity to conduct outreach, and to produce events that feature our local businesses for the Amgen Bicycle Tour in May 2016. • Advocacy • Multiple task forces have been created to address concerns that we have heard from our business community. Some of these concerns: sign ordinance, and waterfront leases. Task Forces are small working groups formed to proactively address a concern. Once addressed and resolved, the working group will dissolve. If you are a business affected by the above concerns, please be in touch. Our working groups are open to new participants, and are actively seeking documentation related to each concern. • Ambassador Program – Community members, many of whom are or have been business owners themselves, gathered in March to discuss their passions and interests, and to answer the question, “What does it mean to be a Chamber Ambassador?” Look forward to meeting these wonderful individuals, with new and familiar faces, at the April 15th mixer. The Chamber is resolutely committed to the needs, wants, and desires of our Chamber members. Please join us, stay in touch, and together, let’s grow!

Thank you, Erica Crawford CEO/President Morro Bay Chamber of Commerce

Congratulations to Business of the Month: Sunshine Health Foods and Shine Café Protecting and Restoring Morro Bay since 1995. MBNEP.org/donate

Established in 1973, Sunshine Health Foods has provided healthy alternatives to the people of the central coast for over 40 years. Since 2006, Sunshine has doubled its size and transformed into a full service natural foods market providing fresh local produce and powering Shine Cafe’s stunning menu. Their newest project has been another expansion into a neighboring building to exclusively house vitamins and supplements. They hired a new full time employee, Tim Vaughn, who brings 30+ years of vitamin experience to running the show in the new location. This expansion will allow them to bring in much more food into the grocery store, resulting in more variety for their loyal customers. Produce is sourced from local Farmer’s Markets, bringing customers the true farm•to•table experience and weaving the Morro Bay community into the business. Since its doors first opened, Sunshine’s customers have been proud to walk in, knowing they are getting the highest quality service on the Central Coast.

Spring — the season of new birth By RUTH ANN ANGUS For Morro Bay Life

Winter is gone and now we can be out and about more than ever. As you go on your outdoor adventures you may become aware of all the new life that surrounds you. Plants are sprouting, trees are leafed out and baby birds are in the nest. Most birds pick a mate and raise a brood in springtime. And while hopefully it is unlikely anyone would deliberately climb a tree and disturb a nest, there are always people who think nothing of knocking down swallow nests from buildings and bridges. While swallow nests can be troublesome for structures, people need to be aware that once a nest is built and contains eggs or young, it is against the law to destroy them. Migratory birds are protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918. Under the auspices of this act, completed swallow nests and eggs cannot be removed and violators can be fined up to $500 or six

months in jail for each offense. This law applies to all native migratory birds, not just endangered ones. It’s happened already locally this year. Swallow nests built on the bridge over Cayucos Creek were knocked down. Unfortunately no one caught the individuals doing this. Once the birds have finished nesting and the baby birds have fledged, nests can be removed. Swallows aren’t the only birds that seem to have issues with man. Snowy plovers do

too. These little shorebirds lay their eggs directly on the open sand of our beaches, admittedly not the safest places. But since these birds are listed as threatened they are afforded a certain amount of protection. Nesting areas on our local beaches are cordoned off from March through September during snowy plover nesting season. Please regard this restriction and stay out of those areas. Birds aren’t the only creatures having young now. Pupping season for harbor seals begins in late March and continues through mid-May on the Central Coast. They live in colonies and tend to stay in familiar locations. There are groups of them usually lounging on the mudflats in Morro Bay. These hauling out sites are important to the seals that use them as resting spots and places to nurse their young. They are shy of being approached and will dive to get away from any disturbance. Births can occur either on land or in shallow water. The pups can swim almost immediately.

Seeing a pup alone on shore does not mean it is abandoned. The harbor seal mom is probably feeding and can stay submerged for up to 20 minutes. Should you see a pup alone and observe it for more than an hour, there is the possibility that something has gone wrong. Never approach the pup. Notify the Morro Bay Harbor Patrol or if in another area, call the Marine Mammal Center at 771-8300. Harbor seals are marine mammals and are protected from harassment by the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972. Fines are stiff so take heed. While sea otters are apt to mate and give birth at any time during the year, the same rules apply to them as to other marine mammals. So if you observe a sea otter pup alone in the water or on land, do not approach it. Its mother will most likely pop up soon to reclaim the pup. For rescue for birds and other land mammals call Pacific Wildlife Care at 543WILD.

to see the spectacle and to take photographs. Wildflowers you might see there are goldfields, tidy tips, baby blue eyes, owl’s clover, poppies, and several varieties of lupine. Farther down Highway 58 is the Carissa Plain and more of the same flowers. While the Shell Creek Road display is the epitome of wildflower viewing, flowers grow everywhere in the open spaces of the county. Where should you look? Check the sides of the roads. Mustard plants are sometimes the first plants to show up in fields and alongside the edges of highways. Other areas to watch for would be places where rain runoff occurs or any area near a stream, rocky outcrops, open grasslands, woodlands, orchards, and chaparral covered hillsides. Here are some plants you might see and types of locations where they have been spotted. Sweet Pea grows on the rocky hillsides along the road by Whale Rock Reservoir and on Highway 46. Also at El Chorro Park, Laguna Lake, See Canyon, Prefumo Canyon, and Poly Canyon. Oxalis, which is considered a pest but has the odd name of Bermuda Buttercup, springs

up on lawns, roadsides, fields, orchards, and woodlands everywhere. Montana de Oro State Park is so named Mountain of Gold due to the yellow and gold wildflowers growing there. Check the Elfin Forest for an assortment of native plants. Find Prickly Phlox springing from the sandstone cliffs on Highway 58. Look for mustard growing among the grape vines on Orcutt Road and vineyards everywhere. Drive up See Canyon and through the Irish Hills or stop at Harmony on Highway 1 or take Santa Rosa Creek Road out to Linn’s. In good years the fields alongside Highway 1 traveling north should show the tiny violet colored storkbill filaree and varieties of yellow dandelion. Turri Road between Los Osos Valley Road and South Bay Boulevard often has good displays of lupine growing in the fields. Lupine is also found on roadsides throughout the county. Keep your eyes open, buy a good flower guide, and don’t forget to always have your camera with you! Enjoy finding where wildflowers grow on the Central Coast.

than ever and started their own music festival called the Hoot. Through this festival the duo have brought the live music scene to life in Woodstock after a long absence. Mike said that he and Ruthy went from their humble busking beginnings to become a force to be reckoned with in the folk music scene. “I play the guitar, sing harmony and lead, I am a songwriter, and Ruthy taught me to play the clawhammer banjo,” he said. “After I picked it up it just felt natural. For Ruthy, music is in the vein, growing up with Grammy-Award winning fiddler Jay Unger as a father. She also plays the fiddle, writes songs and sings lead and harmony with her powerful voice. She sings with such feeling and grace. I remember the first time I heard her at an open mic night, I thought ‘I need to meet this person.’ We have been together ever since.” Spending years developing their sound, Mike and Ruthy have released an album that LA Weekly called, “Some of the best songwriting of

their generation.” The album was released in 2015 and is titled “Bright As You Can,” also the name of the title track. Ruthy’s voice is so warm and full of feeling that the words are almost tangible. The writing is deliberate and tells a story that anyone can relate to. “We really love what we do and have made it our full-time profession,” Mike said. “0The wild part is that we have seen successes we never even dreamt would happen. We have even been given the opportunity to finish one of the late, great Woody Guthrie’s songs. His daughter, who manages his estate, actually called us up to see if we wanted to finish his song. It was an amazing honor and an experience we will never forget.” The Mike and Ruthy Band will be back with the full band on the Central Coast Friday, June 17 from 10:30 p.m. to midnight at the Live Oak Music Festival. obtaining funding to establish farm cooperatives in Romania, his wife’s native country. Ratchford is also a member of Rotary Club of Morro Bay and this project is being coordinated through a Rotary matching grant in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Bustemi in Romania. Ratchford became involved with The Heifer Project, an international organization whose mission is to work with communities to end world hunger and poverty and to care for the earth, after serving in the Peace Corps. The project will work by supplying a farm with five female goats and one Billy goat. The farmer is required to use milk from the goats to make cheese to sell and not to slaughter and consume the goats. Offspring of the animals is to be passed along to another Romanian farmer who will proceed in the same manner again passing along baby goats to another farmer. Melissa Davis of the Morro Bay Rotary club is Coordinator for the Interact club and has been involved with the students, advising them,

for the past two years. “This international project is new and uncharted territory for this club,” Davis said. This group of students is really motivated and enthusiastic. It is a really exciting time in Interact and we hope that the Gala may become an annual event giving the club some independence with choices as to what issues they would like to support.” Interact will host a catered Romanian dinner consisting of Sarmale, Romanian meatballs wrapped in cabbage leaves. There will also be entertainment by high school band Undetermined. Local businesses have donateda many items to the silent auction and there will be raffles for prizes like a free massage, local wine vintages, and even a free flying lesson. Helping each other one hour at a time By RUTH ANN ANGUS For Morro Bay Life

One of the nice things about living in a small town is that neighbors seem to be closer and neighbors help neighbors. We all have talents to share and knowing you can rely on someone for a little help is comforting. Neighbors helping neighbors is the central theme of the Central Coast Hour Exchange. Kay Bolin, who had belonged to a time bank when living in Culver City, got this local organization going along with help from her sister and Mary Ann Jakes, who joined after the first week. Both Bolin and Jakes are now club coordinators. They had three main goals. They wanted to strengthen their community, serve people and give people a means to serve, and establish new relationships that would meet the needs of their members. They sought to do these things through the process of accumulating service hours and exchanging them with other members. Time banking is not a new concept. It works similarly to trading services or barter. The Central Coast Hour Exchange redefines work saying it is beyond price. Many residents in our community have needs that they are unable to do for

themselves. Conversely they also have talents or skills to offer to others. As a member of the Hour Exchange the time spent doing these activities are recorded and banked and kept for further usage. “In this day and age, service for others is necessary,” commented Mike Lindsay an active member of the Hour Exchange. Lindsay, who is also a member of the local HAM radio club, epitomizes service for his community. Another aspect of the group is the ability to network. Networks are stronger than individuals. The Hour Exchange believes that with people helping each other we build communities of support and trust. The Central Coast Hour Exchange operates county wide and every month there is a potluck where new members are introduced. One potluck is held in Los Osos at the Trinity Church on the first Thursday of the month. Each member brings a dish of their choice and gets to bank one hour of service for doing so. Later in the month another potluck is held in Arroyo Grande. Beverly Brown joined after a friend told her about it and brought her to a potluck. “I loved the whole concept and jumped right in with both feet,” Brown said, “I’ve taken people to doctor appointments, to

the airport, cared for people’s pets and I’ve received help with getting my washer and dryer moved from another home, also with gardening and computer help. I even get to learn how to play the mountain dulcimer!” Lori Ann Walters, is one of the coordinators that help people get started. Walters read a story on time banking and loved the concept. The article had a link that she investigated and found this group operating on the Central Coast. “I joined immediately,” she said, “and found many of my neighbors already belonged.” Walters also received assistance herself after having had an accident where she severely injured her shoulder. Her testimonial posted on the organization’s web site says it all: “While I was still in the hospital, I found out that my new CCHE friends had already mobilized and posted a notice asking for help with meals and other needs. The response has been and continues to be overwhelming.” You can learn more about the Central Coast Hour Exchange at cchour.org or e-mail centralcoasthourexchange@gmail. com .
