PADEREWSKI IN PASO ROBLES Ignacy Jan Paderewski was a frequent visitor to Paso Robles between the years 1914 and 1939. He stayed at the El Paso Hotel (now the Paso Robles Inn), and took cures in the hot springs. He also bought 2,864 acres on the West Side of Paso, and established his San Ignacio and Santa Helena ranches. A pioneer almond grower and winemaker, Paderewski transformed Central Coast agriculture and was one of the first to cultivate Zinfandel grapes in California. Wishing to enlarge his holdings and hoping to find oil, Paderewski also acquired 2,626 acres of ranchland near Santa Maria in September 1917. Although several geological explorations and test drillings were carried out, oil was not discovered at that time and the land was eventually sold in November 1933. To commemorate Paderewski’s association with the area, the Paderewski Festival was launched in Paso Robles in 1993 and its annual concerts proved a resounding success. Tours of vineyards, wine tasting, and presentations of Polish culture and history were held in a variety of venues around town. The death of one of the Paderewski Festival organizers and a destructive earthquake in 2003 suspended the Festival. In 2006, under the leadership of the Polish Music Center at USC, the Festival was re-launched as the “Paderewski Reprise” with a solo recital by English pianist, Jonathan Plowright. Held at Cass Winery, the event brought many individuals, organizations, and local businesses together, proving that there is a continued interest in preserving Paderewski’s legacy in Paso Robles. Since then the Festival has gained new supporters among such wellknown Paso Robles institutions as the Carnegie Library, Main Street Association, Pioneer Museum, Park Ballroom, Paso Robles Inn, Paso Wine Alliance and Rotary Club, as well as leading industry sponsors, including Derby Wine Estates, Epoch Estate Wines, Firestone Walker Brewing Company, and Tablas Creek Vineyard, among others. Comprised of various community leaders, the new Paderewski Festival Board of Directors has expanded the Festival by offering more concerts and launching a Youth Piano Competition. A February 2007 letter of Frank Mecham, then Mayor of Paso Robles, suggesting a sister city agreement between Tarnów, Poland—the district encompassing Paderewski’s former estate at Kąśna Dolna—and Paso Robles was favorably received at the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage in Poland. As a result, a Paderewski Festival Board of Directors delegation travelled to
6
Poland in 2008. A visit to Kąśna Dolna and discussions with local officials, as well as meetings at Jagiellonian University in Kraków, in the Ministry of Culture, and with Poland’s First Lady led to a reciprocal visit of Polish officials in Paso Robles during the 2008 Paderewski Festival and the signing of a cultural cooperation agreement between Paso Robles and Tarnów. In his time, Paderewski contemplated establishing a music school in Paso Robles, and the Youth Piano Competition is the Festival’s embodiment of that vision. Young Central Coast pianists are encouraged to pursue their musical passion through auditions, workshops, master classes, and concert performances in California and Poland. Every two years since 2009, selected winners of the Youth Piano Competition in Paso Robles are invited for a two week Cultural Exchange Program of chamber music workshops and piano master classes in Poland led by Paderewski Festival Artistic Director, Marek Zebrowski. Young Californians work alongside young pianists from Poland and Ukraine and perform in joint public concerts at venues linked to Paderewski, such as the Jagiellonian University in Kraków. In turn, every two years since 2010, students from Poland have made reciprocal visits to perform at the Paderewski Festival in Paso Robles and participate in educational programs organized for them locally. This unique program is jointly supported by the Paderewski Festival, numerous Central Coast wineries and many local civic organizations, as well as by the Polish-Ukrainian Paderewski Foundation, the Wspólnota Polska Association, and diplomatic representatives of the Polish government in the United States. The Paderewski Festival in Paso Robles also cooperates with the Paderewski International Piano Competition in Bydgoszcz, Poland, and its First Place winners are often featured at Festival Gala concerts in Paso Robles. There is no doubt that performances of classical music given by the world’s most prominent artists and concerts showcasing young talent during the Festival will continue to enhance the cultural atmosphere of Paso Robles, preserve Paderewski’s legacy and love for the region, and enrich all who participate in this annual music feast in Paso Robles.

Cass Winery Series Concert Thursday, November 1, 7pm | Cass Winery
M Y M U S I C A L J O U R N E Y: A C O N V E R S AT I O N W I T H C O R E Y J O R D A N Born and raised in Paso Robles, California, Corey Jordan studied piano as a child at the insistence of his mother. Less than happy with his weekly classical lessons and unwilling to practice, when he was twelve Corey followed his father’s footsteps into dirt bike racing. He began winning races almost immediately and rose quickly in the amateur standings. By the age of sixteen, he was on track to become a professional but the sport had lost its appeal and he had suffered numerous broken bones and other injuries. Returning to a more “normal” life, Corey graduated from Paso Robles High School and studied for two years at Cuesta College. The feeling for music still strong, he entered the Los Angeles Recording School in West Hollywood, a division of the Los Angeles Film School. Discovering an aptitude for producing music, he also reconnected with the piano and realized how much joy he got from playing it. Although summers and other school breaks were spent working for his father’s construction company, Corey soon realized he would need to immerse himself full time in the music industry if it were to become his dream career. He relocated to Los Angeles and began producing music. At first, it was dance and hip-hop numbers along with some jazz and blues. The connections made along the way brought him work in other genres, and he soon moved into writing and producing full classical orchestrations, movie trailers, and short film soundtracks. One of the connections included Corey’s long time idol Aaron Gillespie, drummer, lead singer and producer of the metalcore band,
Underoath. This relationship led to Gillespie working with Corey on his debut album “Backwards”, released in January of 2017. The songs were written and produced in one week at Corey’s Paso apartment, and recorded in a local studio. In 2014, a Craigslist ad for a piano caught Corey’s attention. It was a 1914 Steinway grand owned since the 1920s by the Golden Gate Park Band conductor, Alfred Arriola, and Corey knew he had to have it. After writing a quick contract and leaving a deposit, he rushed home to sell whatever he could to buy it. The piano has since become a professional tool as well as a treasured part of the family. Feeling as though so many of the good things in his career had happened to him in Paso Robles, Corey gave up his Los Angeles apartment and moved back to his hometown. His beloved 1914 Steinway now sits in a 1910 downtown Paso Robles apartment that also serves as his production studio and an occasional concert venue. Corey enjoys the small town camaraderie and the opportunity to embrace and influence the cultural changes taking place there. By holding small gatherings in his apartment that combine wine tasting, small bites, music, and conversation, Corey shares his music as often as he can with the community. On warm summer evenings, the sounds drifting from the windows of his apartment often draw an audience of patrons from nearby restaurants or inspire impromptu dance parties in the street below. With music making underpinning his daily existence, Corey was able to turn his passion into a successful career as a composer, orchestrator, and music producer. The release of
his first album, written, produced, and recorded with one of his childhood music idols, was a big affirmation that he was headed down the right road. His recent inclusion in the “101 things to love about Paso Robles” featured in the Paso Robles Daily News was a pleasant surprise and a happy confirmation that Corey is headed in the direction he wants to go. Currently, Corey works for Posthaste Music, a Los Angeles based record label specializing in TV and film. www.coreyjordan.com EVENT SPONSOR:

Park Ballroom Series Concert Friday, November 2, 7 pm | Park Ballroom
Late at night over a cask of Paso Robles Zinfandel, three versions of Paderewski (one of them female) sift through a lifetime of memories far too large for any one person: Ignacy the pianist/composer, Jan the politician, and Paderewski the ancient sage and viticulturist. But when the ghost of Paderewski’s first wife Antonina rejoins them, all three versions of the man come together as one with a passion that sheds light on the depths of their endless love. A loving, rousing musical about a man too big to be played by any one person, who changed the world not only through the piano but through his lifetime dream to create the nation of Poland as we know it today.

Suri is a winner of the CAPMT contemporary music competition and the Southwestern Youth Music Festival, and performed at CAMPT winners’ recitals, the Santa Maria Philharmonic Society Youth Showcase and St. Andrew’s Methodist Church several times. Max Afifi (18) has played piano for fifteen years. Under the guidance of Barbara Ruzicka since 2012, Max had blossomed into a wonderful young musician. Currently applying to colleges, Max intends to study music at whichever institution accepts him. He performed at the Carmel Bach Festival three times and, as winner of the Youth Competition, he appeared at the Paderewski Festival in Paso Robles in 2017. Max currently works at Community Hospital of the Monterey Bay as a weekly pianist. Outside of studying hard, Max spends his free time writing songs, practicing guitar, playing piano, and watching Netflix.
Xinyun Liu (17), a native of China, is a junior at Everett Alvarez High School in Salinas. Playing piano since the age of seven, Xinyun loves the instrument for its elegance and the capacity of imitating orchestral sounds and colors. He is currently studying with Mr. Lyn Bronson who helps Xinyun to realize his potential as a pianist. Not fond of competitions, Xinyun has entered only twice, becoming a prizewinner of the 2017 and 2018 Youth Competition and performing at the Paderewski Festival in Paso Robles. Believing that competitions are a platform to express one’s feeling to others through piano, Xinyun realizes that his music-making can only become better and better and is dedicated to pursuing that goal.
