“Mi Casa es Tu Casa” returned to PVA Oct. 26. This year’s exhibit, “Life Changes, Life Continues” considers the aftermath of the pandemic, while celebrating those who were lost. “We’ve been so busy being in survival mode that we didn’t have the time to mourn,” said co-curator Graciela Vega C. Carbajal. “That’s what we’re doing: Taking the time to remember the people, and the special times we had with them.” This year’s “Mi Casa” exhibit features 18 artists and nine family altars, or “ofrendas.” Students from a number of elementary, middle
and high schools, as well as organizations such as Hospice of Santa Cruz County, Tobera Project, and Imagine Supported Living Service are participating this year. For the very first time, an Asian American Pacific Islanders (AAPI) group has created an ofrenda for the exhibit. “It’s so different every year,” said PVA’s Judy Stabile, “depending on the theme and who’s participating.” Added Carbajal: “There is a much heavier ofrenda influence this year. Sometimes ‘Mi Casa’ can have a more light, silly take. But this one is very somber. It’s about how life changes,

“I think that now, with things like the ‘Coco’ movie, it’s not just Mexicano,” she said. “It’s bigger than life. Different cultures have different ways to mourn, and if people want to adopt this practice for their own benefit, they can embrace it.” An opening reception for “Life Changes, Life Continues” will be held Sunday from 1-3pm, with performances by El Sistema, Ballet Folklorico Olin and Activities 4 All. PVA will also be on hand Friday at Watsonville Film Festival’s annual Día de los Muertos celebration, which will kick off at the City Plaza at 4pm. “In Mexico we say, ‘We don’t really lose people until we stop remembering them.’” Carbajal said. “You may physically lose the person, but you still have with you the parts of them that are in you— the lessons learned, and the gifts they have given you.” “Mi Casa es Tu Casa: Life Changes, Life Continues” will run through Dec. 4. yet continues. Even though we’ve gone through so much, we’ll keep persevering.” The main altar, situated in the front room of PVA, was created by co-curators José G. Ortiz, José G. Nolasco and Juan Carlos Padilla. The ofrenda features a large sculpture depicting Mother Earth, along with smaller skeleton figures, flowers, food and photos. Ortiz has been working for three decades on the little skeleton figures on the display, which are inspired by the work of Jose Posada, a Mexican artist known for his creation of La Calavera Catrina. In addition to the exhibit, PVA’s on-site store will sell creations made by participating artists. Stabile said the installation process for “Mi Casa” is unique, in that it is very personal for many of the participants. “Some of them are experiencing loss right then and there,” she said, “as opposed to, [for] people who have lost someone in the past. It’s real—right now. For them it becomes a healing process.” Carbajal said that she’s noticed a shift in who recognizes and celebrates Día de los Muertos.

GOOD COMBO Asian ingredients and ground turkey combine well.

G
round turkey combines well with Asian ingredients to create a flavorful and crunchy burger. Shallots add a more intense onion taste, water chestnuts add crunch and lime zest provides a zing. My recipe here is a version from Sylvia Fountaine, chef and author of the website, Feasting At Home.
The best buns for these burgers are King’s Hawaiian Original Hawaiian Sweet Rolls. Since the rolls are small, you can make smaller burgers, aka sliders. Or, since the buns are attached to each other, you can detach four buns together and slice horizontally down the middle to make one big bun. King’s Hawaiian evolved out of a Portuguese sweet bread called pao doce. In 1950, the buns were baked and sold at Robert’s Bakery
in Hilo, Hawaii, owned and operated by Robert R. Taira. Later in 1963, the bakery moved to King Street in Honolulu where it acquired its new name. The surprise ingredient in these fluffy, eggy, buttery and sweet rolls is pineapple juice. Or, you can make your own buns. There are several recipes online. If you make your own dough, you can form and bake it into a conventional burger bun shape. But I can’t guarantee they’ll be as good as King’s.
1 pound ground turkey—thigh meat has the most flavor 3 tablespoons shallot, very finely diced 2 garlic cloves – finely minced 2 tablespoons chopped cilantro 1/2 –1 pickled jalapeño, seeded and chopped or red chili sauce to taste 1 green onion, chopped 1 1/2 teaspoon fresh grated, or chopped ginger 1 tablespoon finely chopped or grated lime peel 1 tablespoon fish sauce or soy sauce 1 teaspoon sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/2 cup chopped water chestnuts Burger toppings: Shredded cabbage Pickled red onions Sriracha or ketchup mayonnaise King’s Hawaiian bread Break up the ground turkey in a big bowl. Mince the shallots and garlic together. Add cilantro, pickled jalapeño and green onion and continue to chop together. Add it all to the ground turkey. Add grated ginger, lime peel, fish sauce, sugar, salt and black pepper. Finally, add coarsely chopped water chestnuts. Mix well. Form into four burgers or eight sliders. Set aside and refrigerate until ready to grill. Before cooking, set out buns, pickled red onions, mayonnaise, sriracha, cabbage or whatever toppings you want. Prepare the grill to barbecue or a fry pan. Cook on both sides until done. Take a little taste of the burger and sprinkle with salt and pepper if necessary. Heat the buns on the grill to toast. Serve. Makes four burgers

In addition, more than 30 local artists and artisans will be showcased at the first Mercado de Día de Muertos marketplace, hosted by local organization Arte del Corazón. The market will be held at Romo Park, across from the Plaza from 3-7pm. Día de los Muertos 2022 is presented by the WFF in partnership with the the City of Watsonville Parks & Community Services and Santa Cruz County Office of Education. WATSONVILLE—This Friday the Watsonville Film Festival (WFF) will present its Fifth Annual Día de Muertos celebration at Watsonville City Plaza. The event will feature a screening of the Disney/Pixar animated movie “Coco,” as well as music, dance and artwork inspired by the traditional Mexican holiday, also known as Day of the Dead. The centerpiece of the annual celebration are the altars, which are created by local families and nonprofit organizations. The altars, or “ofrendas,” honor ancestors and loved ones who have died. Monarch Services, WHS Hope Club, CASA of Santa Cruz County, Community Life Service and the California Highway Patrol are among the groups creating ofrendas this year. A free online program, including films, tutorials and podcasts, will coincide with the event. To view the
program, visit watsonvillefilmfest. org/dia-de-muertos. “We are hosting this beautiful community event in partnership with many local organizations,” said WFF Executive Director Consuelo Alba. “The lively event has brought thousands of people together in previous years. It’s a healing experience. We gather in community to remember and honor those we have loved and lost. Families love coming to the Plaza to see the community altars, watch ‘Coco’ and continue this ancient tradition.” Things kick off at 4pm with Day of the Dead art activities. Pajaro Valley Arts, Watsonville Brillante, WHS Hope Club, Hospice of Santa Cruz and Arte del Corazón will offer face-painting, paper butterflies, luminarias and colorful mosaic making.
