Greenhouse tours
Pajaro Valley’s agriculture industry is a thriving one, processing and shipping out everything from artichokes to roses to strawberries to zucchini throughout the United States and the world. Although it is the lifeblood of South Santa Cruz County, it is also a world normally closed to the public. But every June, the annual Monterey Bay Greenhouse Growers Open House sets aside a day when the public can get a glimpse behind the opaque walls of the greenhouses, meet the growers and perhaps take home some of the products. The self-guided tour offers participants a chance to purchase locally grown products, and gives businesses a chance to promote themselves. It also raises money for charities chosen by each grower. Participants can visit businesses that grow and ship several varieties of flowers, native and succulent plants, and produce. Many of the businesses offer informational workshops and refreshments. Some hold contests and games. For information, visit www.montereybayfarmtours.org.
Welcome to the home of one of the most spectacular birding and wildlife venues in North America— the annual Monterey Bay Birding Festival. From soaring golden eagles, effortlessly gliding California condors, bushtits, Townsend’s warblers, scampering snowy plovers, to thousands of sooty shearwaters streaming along the ocean’s surface, few places can match the diversity of species as the Monterey Bay region. September marks the peak of fall migration, with wintering shorebirds arriving en masse, making it the ideal month for a birding festival. Located along the globally important Pacific Flyway, the Wetlands of Watsonville provide a resting stop for birds on their migratory journey. The wetland system of sloughs and their uplands offer breeding and year-round habitat for over 200 species of shorebirds, waterfowl, raptors and songbirds. Birds like the cinnamon teal and the barn swallow travel thousands of miles from Mexico and Central and South America to nest here. For information, visit www.montereybaybirding.org.

in the Pajaro Valley (cont.) Historic Apple Box Label Mural Project
The City of Watsonville has developed the Historic Label Art Mural Project as part of the City’s Public Art Program. A series of apple box label murals have been installed throughout Watsonville’s downtown area. Some of these murals were completed with city financial support, and others were completed by private individuals without city assistance. The murals are exact replicas of box and crate labels used in the early 1900s to identify the product, shipper or grower, and the area of origin. The Watsonville area, as well as the Pájaro Valley in general, had literally hundreds of labels in use during this time. There are presently 13 completed murals, created by five artists. The Redevelopment and Housing Department is in the process of developing a fullpage, full-color print brochure for the City of Watsonville’s Outdoor Art / Mural Walk program, along with a webbased, virtual walking tour. www.growinwatsonville.com/ Mural

Food
Watsonville is known for its Mexican food, with taquerias selling simple tacos, burritos and other basics as good as anything that can be found outside Mexico. The city also boasts several sit-down Mexican restaurants. But those seeking different cuisines need look no further than Watsonville’s borders. Hungry visitors can find Japanese, Chinese and Vietnamese, in addition to pizza places and even two hot dog stands.
Moss Landing
The Watsonville Farmers Market
A short drive through verdant Pajaro Valley farmland is Moss Landing, a quaint fishing village where visitors can nosh on world-class seafood, charter a fishing boat, take a kayak tour through a beautiful wetland system or go whale watching. During commercial crab season in November, visitors can purchase freshly caught Dungeness crab directly from the boat in Moss Landing Harbor. www.mosslandingchamber.com
On Fridays, Watsonville Plaza is transformed into a thriving outdoor market, with dozens of vendors selling produce and a variety of ready-made food. The Watsonville Farmers Market was established in 2000 and has remained a downtown mainstay. After strolling through the party-like atmosphere, visitors can check out downtown Watsonville’s eclectic mix of shops and markets. The Watsonville Farmers Market is open year-round. It is located in Watsonville Plaza along Peck Street. It is held Fridays from 3 until 7 p.m.
Beaches
Just a short drive from Watsonville are some of the best beaches in Santa Cruz County, with wide, open sands stretching out for miles along the coast. The wide, open space allows visitors to stretch out and relax, and offers the illusion of isolation, even when there are numerous visitors. Most of the beaches allow dogs on a leash.

Those duties have grown exponentially since then, as he manages the entire fairgrounds, dozens of events throughout the year and, most notably, the fair. Active in 4-H throughout his life, Kegebein attended Watsonville High School, where he joined the Future Farmers of America. He was appointed at 18 by then-Gov. Jerry Brown to serve on the Board of Directors of the Santa Cruz County Fair. While he has worked in the construction industry, he has always been a farmer first. He has grown berries for more than two decades.

Farm Bureau holds annual dinner Silvia Prevedelli named farmer of the year
Open and Deliver 7 Days a week Santa Cruz County Farm Bureau President David Van Lennep presents the farmer of the year award to Silvia Prevedelli. With a sweeping view of verdant Pajaro Valley farmlands in the distance, and the sun slipping behind the horizon through cloudless skies, dozens of people gathered at Live Earth Farms on June 23 for the 99th annual dinner meeting of the Santa Cruz County Farm Bureau. The meeting has long been a way to bring the agriculture community together to celebrate the coming harvest. It is also a time to name the farmer of the year, an honor that this year went to Prevedelli Farms matriarch Silvia Prevedelli. Prevedelli came to the U.S. from her native Italy in 1966. She married Frank, whose parents started the farm in 1945. With no farming experience, she began helping her husband on his farm, growing apples, plums and vegetables for which the farm is still known. She is now involved in nearly every aspect of the farm’s operation. Wanting to switch to the “natural” farming methods of her homeland, Prevedelli helped the farm become organic just over 10 years ago. Prevedelli is currently involved
in a project that links the health care industry with the agriculture community. She participates in the “Day on the Farm” program, and gives tours and presentations for the annual Eco Farm Tour, which draws farmers from around the world. She sits on the Board of Directors of the Santa Cruz County Farm Bureau, and the Agri-Culture Down to Earth Women’s Luncheon Committee. She is active with the Sons of Italy and the California Small Farms Conference. A fourth-generation family farm, the Prevedelli family has been in Watsonville since 1945. They grow nearly 40 types of apples and other produce including beans, squash and berries, and have been using organic farming methods for nearly a decade. The farm was certified as organic more than 10 years ago. Prevedelli said the award surprised her. “It’s incredible,” she said. “A lot of other people deserve it too. I love what I am doing. Farming is a part of my life.”
