Do you know what a standard drink is? A standard drink isn’t usually the same as a glass of wine or beer poured in a pub or at home. Alcohol use is a major risk factor in numerous health conditions, injuries and social problems. Your Public Health Service supports and encourages responsible drinking of alcohol in our communities. For advice, resources and information on how to pour a standard drink go to www.alcohol.org.nz

Patient transport between Nelson and Marlborough Patients often travel between Marlborough and Nelson for hospital appointments or procedures. If your medical condition is acute, you may make the trip in an ambulance arranged by hospital staff. However, once you are discharged from hospital, you will have to make your own return transport arrangements. The Marlborough Sounds Community Vehicle Trust runs an ‘on demand’ service taking passengers to and from medical appointments in Nelson. Trust spokesperson, Bryan Strong says they will pick up from Blenheim, Picton and anywhere along Queen Charlotte Drive and State Highway 6. The service may also be able to assist returning Marlborough patients dischargged from Nelson Hosp pital (subjject to notice)). Passengers wishing to use the community vehicle will need to pay $15 per year to become a member of the Trust, and the cost of a return trip is $40. The Marlborough Sounds Community Vehicle Tru ust can be contacted on (03) 574 1311 or by emailing soundsvehicle@gmail.com Patient travel costs may be reimbursed if you have a Community tyy Serv rvices v Card, the distance travelled is more than 80 kilometres and you are registered for national travel assistance.

Baby teeth matter

Baby teeth are important, and necessary, for the health of permanent teeth. Under five-year-olds need to have their teeth brushed by an adult, twice a day,

with fluoride toothpaste. Ensure your kids are enrolled at a community dental clinic preferably before their first birthday - and teach them how to care for their teeth.

Talk to your local school or kindergarten, GP, Plunket Nurse or Tamariki Ora/Well Child provider about enrolling or approach a clinic directly.

Summer may have arrived late this year but for Nelson and Wairau hospitals the tourist season still had an enormous effect. Acting CE Peter Bramley reported that Nelson Hospital’s ED saw the most presentations ever in one day on 1 January. The 10-day Scout Jamboree in Renwick kept our Public Health and primary care teams busy while they also contended with cruise ships and continued supporting the communities of Ward, Seddon and Clarence in the aftermath of November’s Kaikoura earthquake. Adding to the pressure there was a gastro outbreak in the Nelson Lakes National Park. By mid-January approximately a quarter of people presenting for emergency care were visitors to our region.

We have come through this period thanks to the amazing commitment of our staff and the understanding of our local population. Normality has returned and the staff can have a breather, until the next busy time – ‘flu season is around the corner, but I’ll leave that til next month. Enjoy the last days of summer.
