Camp is for EVERY GIRL Girl Scout camp is all about trying new things, meeting new friends, and having fun. Whether you’re interested in horses, archery, canoeing, rock climbing, hiking or want to try it all, Girl Scouts of New Mexico Trails summer camps are open to all girls entering grades 1 - 12! We utilize the tools of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience to help turn your camper into a G.I.R.L. (Gogetter, Innovator, Risk-taker, and Leader). The Girl Scout Leadership Experience encourages girls to Discover themselves, Connect with others, and Take Action to make the world a better place. Guided by our highly trained camp staff, she will discover opportunities that guide her to take risks with support from her sister Girl Scouts and develop skills she will use for the rest of her life. Our Girl Scout camps give girls the opportunity to meet people of different backgrounds in a safe environment, without judgments and expectations of the outside world. In a community free of electronic devices, campers focus on interacting with one another in a natural setting. Resident camps typically last 6 days, with mini sessions lasting 4 days. Leadership camps can last up to 12 days. Troop and family camps are weekend camps that take place Friday through Sunday. NEW this year are two extended session Troop Camps!

Bring a Friend! Non-Girl Scouts welcome! Girl Scout summer camp is for EVERY girl, even those not yet in Girl Scouts! For girls brand new to Girl Scouting, include the $40 Membership Fee. along with the camp session fees. Beginning May 1, for an extra $10 ($50 total), your Girl Scout Membership will be extended through September 30, 2021 - that covers two camp seasons! See the Resident Camp registration form at www.nmgirlscouts.org/summercamp.

Are we ready for resident camp? Is my daughter ready?

Although age is one factor in readiness for resident camp, maturity and personality are more important factors. If your girl is enthusiastic about attending, she will probably enjoy camp!

Big Clean

FOR TROOPS, ALUMNAE, FAMILIES & INDIVIDUALS Spend the weekend at camp and help us get ready for the upcoming season. You’ll help us clean the shelters, dining halls, put up or tear down tents, and generally prepare camp for the summer or winter! Lodging available if you choose to stay overnight.GSNMT will not be providing any meals, programming or childcare services.

☙☙ Has your daughter ever been away from home overnight without family members?

Camp Elliott Barker May 2 - 3 October 3-4

☙☙ Can she keep track of her personal belongings?

Rancho del Chaparral May 9 - 10 September 26-27

☙☙ Can she take a shower, brush her teeth, etc., by herself? ☙☙ Does she have an easy time finding a buddy in a new situtation? ☙☙ Can she focus and follow directions in a group setting? ☙☙ Can she stay calm around bugs and other nature friends?

Am I ready? You might need reassurance about sending your daughter to resident camp for the first time.

A Day At Camp It’s a busy week at camp! Campers experience a variety of activities depending on the program they’ve selected. All campers enjoy engaging activities like cookouts, hiking, arts, crafts, songs & games. Within each session, girls and their counselors decide what activities they’d like to do that week. Each day’s events differ slightly, but a typical day at camp looks like this:

☙☙ Can you relax and enjoy yourself when your girl sleeps away from home?

6 - 7 AM 7:45 AM 8 AM 9:30 AM 12:30 PM 1:30 PM 2:30 PM 5:45 PM 6 PM 7:30 PM 9 - 10 PM

☙☙ Do you agree with the rule that girls have camp kapers (chores) such as setting tables, sweeping cabins, picking up trash, and cleaning bathrooms? ☙☙ Are you confident that your girl will take care of herself, make her bed, and keep track of her belongings? ☙☙ Do you want her to come home more confident, independent and with new friendships? ☙☙ Are you prepared to trust the camp staff with the care of your daughter?

If you answered YES to at least half of these, then you and your girl are ready for summer camp! 6 • Summer Camp 2020

Camp Elliott Barker

Summer Horse Programs There are now two levels of horseback riding camps. Please choose the camp that is best suited to you/your camper to ensure their best experience. The lessons that are planned for the girls are based on the median riding ability of the total girls in the program.

Level 1: Beginner

These camps are for girls who have ridden less than 20 times by themselves. This includes in the arena, on the trail, taking lessons, etc. Girls will learn the basics from the ground up and spend time in the saddle getting comfortable with the horses. These camps are primarily offered at Barker as this property is better suited to beginner riders.

Level 2: Experienced

These camps are for girls who have ridden more than 20 times by themselves. Most likely they have taken or are taking lessons and are ready to try something new. Review the basics, practice in the arena, hit the trails, and maybe even take a horse overnight. Girls will spend barn time learning more about stable maintenance (feed, jobs, horse health, etc) in addition to riding. These camps are primarily offered at Rancho as this property is better suited to experienced riders.

Camp Care Packs Preparing a camp care package is a form of art. It reminds campers there are people at home sending them love and anxiously awaiting them to come home to tell them all about their camp adventures. A great camp care pack is stuff with all the things your camper didn’t think or maybe forgot to pack for camp! From things she needs, to rest time activities just for her, and a few things she can use with her new (and old!) friends. Let us do the hard work for you! Order a Camp Care pack for your Resident Camper today! Camp Care packs are delivered on Mondays after breakfast. Be sure to place your orders at least one week prior to your campers session! Visit www.nmgirlscouts.org/summercamp for details and to order yours today!

Transportation to resident camp Campers can opt into taking the bus one way or round trip to camp ($10 each way), or may arrive/depart camp via car. Girl Scouts of New Mexico Trails offers bus transportation to both of our resident camps as a service to help get girls to camp safely and with as low a cost impact on families as possible. We will be enforcing a minimum occupancy for all buses to and from camp. In order for a bus to be scheduled, we must have at least 10 girls registered to ride the bus three weeks prior to camp. If there are not 10 girls registered, we will reach out to families and give them one (1) week to add the bus option. If this minimum is not met, the bus will be canceled. Families will be responsible for getting their girls to camp. All families will be given at least two week’s notice. Any fees paid towards the bus will be refunded if a bus is cancelled. Buses to both camps will start at the Girl Scouts of New Mexico Trails council office in Albuquerque on the first day of each resident camp session and will make limited stops along the way to camp. Please note: If your girl is signed up to take the bus to/from camp, camp staff is expecting she will check in/out with the bus staff. You must notify council at least three weeks prior to your session start date to make changes to your travel plans. Refunds will not be issued for any cancellations made after this time.

Who are the camp counselors?

Have you ever thought about working at camp?

Members of camp staff are enthusiastic, talented, and caring individuals selected based on maturity, program experience, and genuine desire to work with girls. All of our staff are interviewed, screened, and background checked. Program Specialists and counselors are at least 18 years old. Supervisors are at least 21 years old. Camp staff are from New Mexico, all over the U.S. and some even come from different countries around the world! Staff share their culture with campers and many are returning staff from pervious summers, some with as many as 20 years of camper and camp staff experience.

Check out opportunities for young adults 16 years old or older (horse staff, counselors, and program specialists) or professionals and retirees looking for a summer of adventure (supervisors, health professionals, and administrators). Visit www.nmgirlscouts.org/workatcamp

Before camp begins, staff attend an intensive on-site training as well as midsummer in-service training which includes activity programming, outdoor skills, songs, games, first aid and safety, emergency procedures, team building, program age level characteristics, dealing with homesickness, and more. Program Specialists have additional training and certification in their program area, such as archery, ropes course, and life-guarding. Certain program staff are also trained in wilderness first aid. We follow Girl Scouts Safety Activity Checkpoints and American Camp Association standards for all staff training and certification requirements.
