Mount Hermon, Massachusetts

Make the most of the summer months at NMH Summer Session. For more than 100 years, NMH has offered: • rigorous academics • innovative teaching • individual attention • a life-changing experience Our students come from all over the U.S. and the world — and they each have their own goals. For some, it’s a chance to experience a challenging academic environment, possibly for the first time. For others, it’s an opportunity to build on their existing foundation and get a jump on college preparation. Because we have welcomed students from more than 125 countries and all 50 states, our program offers the chance to make powerful connections and unique, lifelong friends. Some students have such a great experience that it’s hard for them to leave at the end of the summer.

June 27–August 1, 2020

College Prep

For students entering grades 10–12.

In this program, motivated students dig deeply into one subject. They focus, settle in, and explore. They go further.

College Prep One subject. Inspiring teachers. Small classes. It’s a learning environment that allows students to really fly. They’re given the space to share academic interests, accelerate their progress, and end the summer feeling as if they’ve accomplished something. Earn high-school credit — our courses frequently satisfy full-year requirements at other schools — or build a foundation for further study. Seize the opportunity to explore a field that may not be accessible at other high schools. Students with a record of solid academic performance and good citizenship are encouraged to apply.

“Our boys each returned from Summer Session proud of their efforts, excited about the new friends they made, and well positioned for their ambitious steps in the following school year. It was a milestone experience for them.”

Rising Scholars Our teachers understand middle school students. We give them challenges — and lots of support — inside and outside the classroom, nurturing their intellectual growth in an environment that prepares them for what’s ahead. Each student in this program takes one or two major courses, plus a minor course and a sport. A supervised evening study period helps them develop habits that will serve them well in high school.

“Pre-algebra really set the stage for me — math isn’t my strong point — and made the upcoming year much easier.” — Patrick Thayer (NMH ’21), Rising Scholars student

ESOL

For students entering grades 7–12.

English for Speakers of Other Languages is for international students who want to improve their English language skills. A placement test given at the beginning of the session ensures that each student receives instruction at the proper level.

“At NMH, I realized some of my dreams. I have made so many new friends from different countries and cultures. I improved my English and learned how to socialize with people from different backgrounds.” — Lana Monaco, Brazil, ESOL student Whether students are beginners or advanced in the study of English, they’ll have plenty of opportunities to practice listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Our ESOL teachers are experienced, and their small classes provide the perfect environment for group discussions. Students immerse themselves in the language, both academically and on field trips that offer a taste of U.S. culture. Whether they are in the Rising Scholars or College Prep section of ESOL, students take one major course, a minor course, and a sport.

Recreation There are lots of opportunities to enjoy fun activities throughout the summer. We have a beautiful campus with playing fields, tennis and basketball courts, a swimming pool, and country roads for cycling. Weekend activities include dances, movies, and trips to Boston, New York City, Six Flags (amusement park) — even whitewater rafting on a local river.
