The Midas PRO6 Live Audio System is the second networked digital audio system from Midas. Employing technologies developed from the class-leading XL8, the PRO6 offers the same exemplary sample-synchronised audio performance in a compact package. Although the PRO6 standard system comprises a Control Centre with a footprint similar to that of a 32 channel Verona and only two 7U 19” rack units, it’s diminutive size belies its ability to provide up to 80 simultaneous input processing channels and up to 32 (+3) discrete mixes in monitor mode, all of which feature EQ and a choice of many dynamics processing options. By adding additional I/O hardware the PRO6’s network can be expanded up to 264 inputs and 264-outputs. These connections can be patched and routed on a scene-by-scene basis, by use of the PRO6’s powerful snapshot automation.

DN530 Creative Quad Gate

With the unrelenting absorption of signal processing into digital mixing consoles, outboard gear now has to contribute something extra special merely to justify its space in the rack. The new DN530 Creative Quad Gate does just that. It brings some exciting new tools to the audio party. The DN530 features “Transient Accenting�, a creative feature providing an easy way to enhance the attack envelope beyond merely opening the gate. This can provide up to 12dB of additional transient energy and its primary application is to provide additional impact on drums and percussion instruments, although it can be used to enhance the impact of many instruments, including acoustic stringed instruments such as guitar and piano. Transient Accenting is unique in that it allows the operator precise control over the amount of enhancement applied to each channel of processing.

DN540 Creative Quad Compressor 10

Compressors were originally devised to reduce the dynamic range of audiosignals. To do this they use gain modification that makes adjustments to signal levels automatically, dependant on the level and dynamic of the signal itself and upon the character and control settings of the particular compressor unit. Throughout the history of dynamics processing many different types of compressor have been produced using many different types of gain technology. Each type has a distinctive sound. Users have found many applications which benefit from these often unintentional compression audio artefacts, taking the use of compressors far beyond simple dynamic range reduction, sometimes even generating the complete reverse; Dynamic Enhancement. It is with these creative applications in mind, that the DN540 has been designed to offer a latency-free, comprehensive and compact dynamics processing package.


DN9696 High Resolution Audio Recorder

96 Tracks, 96kHz, 24-bit, 9+ Hours. Simple, yet powerful. The concert sound industry is constantly evolving. Bands and artists are increasingly being recorded for live CDs, DVDs, Internet releases and for general archive purposes; all are extremely valuable additional revenue streams for both the artist and service companies alike. Secondly, with limited production rehearsals now being the norm, mix engineers require live recordings so that a “virtual sound check” can be performed. This removes the need to directly involve the artist, and all the associated additional expense and time that a traditional sound check or rehearsal process incurs. The “virtual sound check” also allows the mix engineer the time to fine tune his mix and use the full potential that digital console automation offers.

To help meet the concert sound industry’s requirements, Klark Teknik has engineered an extremely easy to use, simple to setup, standalone hard disk recorder - the DN9696. This High Resolution Audio Recorder offers 96 tracks of 96kHz audio at 24-bit, with a massive nine hours of internal storage. There is now no need for external computers linked to multiple non-roadworthy systems with complicated interconnections, just a simple plug and play unit with dedicated Play, Stop and Record front panel transport controls. As well as the simple front panel transport controls, there is a Solo/PFL system with track selection and headphone output for monitoring. Plus dedicated controls for entering marker, or locate points, during a recording with the option to use a footswitch, as well as forward and backward skip buttons for moving between marker points during playback. All this has been developed with the live environment in mind. The DN9696 offers an elegant, yet powerful, set of tools for the user. The screen based software interface offers in-

depth control of both recording and playback functions. There are echoes of the unique features of Midas’ digital audio systems within the DN9696, for example the use of POPulation groups to view, colour and edit tracks, an ‘Input Sheet’ for quickly naming all tracks as well as ‘dual operator’ control of the system. All audio data is stored as industry standard Broadcast Wave files (BWAV) which can be easily imported into any professional DAW system. Uniquely, the DN9696 has a mirrored drive capability, allowing simultaneous internal and external HD recording for real time backup and redundancy. This eliminates the need for timeconsuming copying at the end of a performance. The DN9696 can be used to provide a ‘Virtual Sound Check’ when used in conjunction with a Midas digital mixing system. This allows the FOH mix engineer to sound check without the artist present. Essentially a recording of the previous show is used to allow the engineer to fine tune aspects of the mix and update automation scenes if necessary. On monitors the

DN9696 can again be used as the audio source to enable the engineer to mix basic levels and create a starting point for the band. The DN9696 can also be used as a standalone hard disk recorder using Midas digital system building blocks, for example DL431 microphone splitters or DL351 modular I/O units. They offer flexible I/O options, both analogue and digital, are easily configured, providing analogue line I/O as well as AES/EBU connectivity with sample rate conversion. The DL rackmount components offer outstanding analogue to digital conversion with the superb audio quality of a Midas ‘front end’, including the legendary Midas microphone preamplifiers. Of course any other AES50 equipped device can be used as an alternative input source. The DN9696 occupies only 5U of rack space with very simple cable requirements and does not demand the expense of a dedicated recording technician. After all, all you really need is Record, Stop and Play.

TX1122

The Electro-Voice® TX1122 is a high power, 2-way loudspeaker system that can be used in a variety of applications where high quality sound reinforcement is required in a lightweight package. The TX1122 utilizes the DH3, a high output 1.25” titanium compression driver, coupled to a Constant Directivity™ 90° x 50° horn. This combination results in a smooth response to 20 kHz and excellent pattern control in short to medium throw applications. The SMX2120 12” woofer has an FEA optimized magnet structure for very low distortion and maximum intelligibility at high SPL levels. The crossover uses steep 24 dB/octave slopes with equalization for very smooth response in vocal range, extended HF, and a protection circuit for long term reliability. The TX1122 has a variety of features that make it equally suited for portable or fixed installation applications. The trapezoidal enclosure is constructed out of a combination of plywood and MDF, and coated with EVCoatTM for maximum strength while still remaining lightweight. The unique grille design is very strong, dent resistant, and features a rotatable logo. Four way handles allow for gripping the TX1122 in a variety of positions, a pole mount allows for placement on a subwoofer or a tripod. Six 3/8” threaded points allow a single TX1122 to be suspended in a various positions. Tour X Speaker Series

The Electro-Voice® TX1122FM is a compact, high output dedicated floormonitor for use on small to medium-sized stages where high quality vocaland instrument applications are required in a lightweight package. The TX1122FM enclosure utilizes Signal Synchronized Transducers™ (patent pending), a design that aligns the woofer and compression driver by locating them on separate baffles, and integrates a low distortion port between the baffles. The TX1181 uses the EVS-18S, a high excursion 18� woofer, coupled to well braced enclosure with large, low distortion ports, to add high impact bass response to any fullrange loudspeaker. An integrated low pass filter allows the TX1181 to be connected in parallel with a TX1122 or TX1152 on a single amplifier channel, eliminating the need for additional amplifier channels and processing. The TX1181 has many features that make it a versatile subwoofer system. The enclosure is constructed out of a combination of MDF and plywood, and coated with EVCoatTM for maximum strength and durability. The Electro-Voice® TX2152 is a high power, very high sensitivity, 2-way loudspeaker system that can be used in applications that require high SPL while maintaining a smooth response. When combined with the TX2181 subwoofer, the TX2152 is capable of serving as the main PA for small to medium sized live sound venues and nightclubs with extended LF response. The TX2152 utilizes the ND2, a high output 2” titanium compression driver, coupled to a Constant Directivity™ 60° x 40° horn. This combination results in excellent pattern control in medium throw applications. Some years ago fiber optic has been used for special cabling like HD broadcast cameras only. Meanwhile digital signal and network applications in pro audio, broadcast and touring / rental spring up like mushrooms which opens a wide range of fiber optic use. THE APPLICATION DEPTH IS EXTENSIVE, SOME EXAMPLES ARE • Network (Audio, Data or DMX) transmissions with >70m (mobile) or >100 m (installation) length, based on pro equipment (e.g. mixers) offering fiber optic connections or using a fiber optic switch • Digital HD video transmissions > 15m (e.g. DVI, HDMI or KVM projection) using fiber optic media converters • Future prove installations eliminating bandwidth limitations • Noise and EMI protection on audio or video (LED walls) applications • Increased bandwidth especially on broadcast applications • Signal embedding to minimize cabling efforts especially on broadcast applications with help of pro equipment or media converters

The trend to use connectors out of the data communication / computer industry for pro audio and broadcast applications (RJ45 connectors) did also not stop short of fiber optic connectivity. Conventional data communication fiber optic connectors like ST, SC or LC are optimized for permanent one time connection but cannot meet the rough requirements of mobile applications and high mating cycles as required for the entertainment industry. By necessity used military connectors have been expensive and showed either high attenuation and return loss or no dust protection.

Neutrik as connectivity specialist for rough entertainment applications solved mobile fiber optic connectivity problems when launching the opticalCON DUO fiber optic connection system in 2005. The reliable and simple concept has proven its ruggedness and low maintenance which led to a wide acceptance in the pro audio and broadcast industry. Well-known equipment manufacturers of pro equipment as well as key users in broadcast and rental / touring trust in the opticalCON DUO. It is our goal to turn it to an industry standard comparable to the widely used etherCON series. The system is based on LC-Duplex connectors but eliminates its weakness and guarantees a safe, dust protected and rugged connection. Being compatible to conventional LC connectors the opticalCON DUO offers the choice of using cost effective LC cables or the rugged opticalCON mobile cable assembly. This final user flexibility choosing a cost effective LC for system integration or a rugged cable for mobile applications is appreciated by OEMs. The opticalCON DUO is used for various audio, lighting and video applications. Typically examples are audio and DMX network (ring switch) applications, video projection based on fiber optic DVI, HDMI, or KVM signal converters or mobile video LED panels as well as various broadcast applications. With the high bandwidth requirements of HD video displays copper connectivity is extremely short (<20m), mobile Ethernet based network cables are limited with a length of about 70m only and broadcast has to deal with both, high bandwidth and long distance. The opticalCON fiber optic connection system eliminates these limitations, the lightweight solution safes setup time and cost compared to heavy copper multicore installation. Critical EMI problems as known on DMX network and especially LED panels are solved as well. The new opticalCON QUAD is based on the proven opticalCON DUO connection system but with 4 channels it is optimized for POINT-TO-POINT interconnections. The system copes with the increasing need for fiber optic channels, offers an armoured X-TREME cable for highest reliability and helps to minimize different connection standards with an innovative TRIPLE-SPLIT 12-channel solution.

Aqua Series Marine Grade SeaCat data multicores The Van Damme SeaCat range comprises two cables for networking installations - a 4 way Cat 5E screened solid conductor multicore and an 8 way version which also contains a 4 way OM3 multimode fibre for potential 10G Ethernet applications. As with the SeaCat multicore these cables are Low Smoke Zero Halogen jacketed and are fire retardant and fire resistant making them ideal for public building and marine installations. The 8 way multicore is an ideal solution for multiple data line installations as the included OM3 fibre can be simply left unterminated for future networking upgrades - particularly useful in the marine sector where cable pulls travel through waterproof and fireproof bulkheads making cable upgrades difficult and expensive to retrofit.

SMPTE and others advise that 90% of this cable length introduces an appropriate safety factor - the chart below includes an 80% safety factor as jitter and other factors can increase dramatically in the last 20% of a cable run.

Van Damme Super Marine is an extension to the Van Damme SeaCat range. The data cable element is a Category 6 S/FTP type -individually foil screened pairs with an additional overall screen. The individual screening of the pairs gives excellent crosstalk figures and the potential to run mixed digital and analogue signals in the same cable. Category 6 rating also gives better headroom and therefore gigabit Ethernet signals will run over longer distances than with the Cat 5E SeaCat range. As with the SeaCat range 4 x OM3 multimode fibres are included in the multicore cables for 10G Ethernet use.

The Vestax VCI-300 is the first product to ship as ITCH system. The VCI-300 is a dedicated USB controller for the included Serato ITCH DJ software. It has a built in audio interface with standard 4in/4out and headphone connection, which means all you need for DJing is the VCI-300, a laptop and a set of headphones.

The VCI-300 is completely portable and is bus powered which make's it simple to connect with only one USB cable required to connect. Because all of the controls just work with Serato ITCH out of the box you don't have to worry about complex setup or the need to learn about MIDI configuration. Serato and Vestax engineers have worked closely together to achieve simplicity, accuracy and of course hours of pure fun! You can use the VCI-300 with the provided ITCH software or without the computer connected if you simply want to play music from your external CD or MP3 player. The ITCH software reads music from your iTunes library or the Serato library you use for Scratch LIVE, making it the perfect device for recreational or professional DJ's. The JOG wheel (or platters) on the VCI-300 are much more sensitive than a standard MIDI controller with 3rd party add-on software. Co-engineering has allowed more data to move between the controller and the software, this also happens at a faster rate than traditional MIDI. A great example of this is the adjustable JOG wheel torque mechanism, designed to avoid vibration from low frequency feedback (thumping bass) affecting the accuracy of the ITCH software.
