NMK @ MEBS It was a great event at Abu Dhabi on the 17th and 18th where we met some old and new clients at our booth. Since it was the first of its kind in the capital city it wasn’t as spectacular as people wanted it to be. However Abu Dhabi is on the right track and that only means good news for us at NMK. The two day event was held at ADNEC and this was a great venue for such an event. There were various products that we showcased on our booth such as the Midas Pro6, SHURE UHF-R wireless system, ClearCom Tempest, Dynaudio acoustics Air Monitor Speakers and various other SHURE products. Overall the event was a great opporunity to meet several new customers and re-establish contacts with existing ones.

CellCom Digital Wireless System Takes Center Stage at Houston’s Alley Theatre ALAMEDA, CALIFORNIA, NOVEMBER 11, 2009 ─ Clear-Com® Communication Systems, a Vitec Group brand, is right on cue when it comes to satisfying the complex communications requirements of the prestigious Alley Theatre in Houston, TX. The theatre, which mounts numerous plays year-round on its two stages, counts on Clear-Com’s CellCom™ digital wireless intercom system to maintain easily accessible, reliable communications between crew members responsible for staging its shows. The Alley Theatre, home to the 824-seat Hubbard and 310-seat Neuhaus stages, uses the CellCom system as the main method of communications for the entire backstage crew, from stage manager, to light and soundboard operators, to wardrobe and house managers. Prior to CellCom, crew members used third-party beltpacks, but felt they needed a system that offered greater capability and would flawlessly integrate with their existing equipment. They also needed it to have an operating range large enough to work throughout much of the building and flexible enough to handle the requirements of both of its stages. According to Pierre Dupree, the sound supervisor for the Alley Theatre, the CellCom solution is miles ahead of its competition. “The reception and sound are fantastic,” he says. “It’s much better than other wireless communication products; the sound comes through very clearly. We also appreciate the ease with which we can recharge the

beltpacks through the integrated charging stations or plug-in cords. It saves time and money and is great for the environment.” CellCom’s flexibility and ease of programming is another big plus for Dupree and the Alley Theatre staff. They can easily create partylines or reroute how the units interface with the wired unit quickly and efficiently through the CellCom software. Better yet, the system can grow with the theatre’s evolving needs. “We like that we’re not limited to only having 10 beltpacks ─ if we need more, we can add when needed and extend our coverage with antennas,” notes Dupree. The Alley Theatre’s Clear-Com package centers on a CellCom base station with eight active antennas and 10 CellCom beltpacks. The eight antennas ensure coverage over most areas of both theatres, including backstage, in sound and other types of booths, as well as in the spaces between the theatres ─ a total area involving thousands of square feet of space and multiple floors. “CellCom was really the only viable, affordable approach to allow us 10 beltpacks that would operate in both of our performance spaces,” says Dupree. “That’s no small feat since the two spaces are in completely different parts of the complex.” With new FCC regulations requiring most wireless users to shift away from frequencies in the 700 MHz band, the fact that CellCom uses the 1.9 GHz band is another investment in the future for the Alley Theatre. As the 1.9 GHz band is far away from where most other wireless systems typically used in live production operate, it makes the system more reliable and less prone to reception issues. “Clear-Com is considered the de facto standard in live performance intercom for theatres, because of our dedication to high-quality reception and reliability and our ability to integrate with our customers’ existing products,” says Bob Boster, Director of Sales, Americas and Asia Pacific at Clear-Com. “The Alley Theatre contributes so much to its community, and we’re delighted to help enhance the experience for its audiences.”

Midas XL8 and KT DN9696 duo on Gloria Estefan’s farewell tour Latino superstar Gloria Estefan swept into the UK in late July, headlining at the Summer Pops Music Festival at Liverpool’s Echo Arena. The tour, intended to be her last, has covered Latin and South America plus European festival dates, and is being supplied with a Midas XL8 Live Performance System and Klark Teknik DN9696 hard disc recorder by Clair Brothers Audio. By the time the tour arrived in Liverpool, FOH engineer Mark Dowdle had clocked up around 50 shows on the XL8 and was having a great time using it. “I was searching for something that would give me the facilities I need for a show of this size: normally more than 100 inputs,” he says. “I’ve used some digital desks which allowed me a lot of inputs on a small surface but they didn’t give me the sound I was used to getting, so I gravitated back to analogue.” As a longtime Midas user, when Dowdle heard about the XL8 he looked into spec’ing one for this tour. “I’ve used XL4s, H3000s and PRO40s over the years and always loved the sound,” he continues.

“Midas desks have that musicality and transparency I’m looking for, the EQ is always responsive and sounds fantastic. As soon as I got in front of the XL8 and heard it for myself, I knew it was what I was looking for. It’s not recognisable as a digital console when you listen to it. It’s unique in the digital world as far as the audio quality is concerned. Having incredible sounding mic preamps combined with the approach taken laying out the control surface, it’s almost like I’m on an analogue console with the extra ability to handle the large input bands I’m used to. My favourite feature is the XL8’s POP groups which allow me to go directly to whichever inputs are assigned to that group; at the push of a button it’s all right in front of you and immediately accessible.” Dowdle has used the XL8’s automation to programme 29 scenes for the show. “I end up mixing rather actively, but with as many inputs as I have, along with a multitude of instrument changes throughout the show, having a great starting point
for each song is invaluable,” he says. “It allows me to have everything set exactly the way I want it, so I’m comfortable that I’m starting in a good place and I can take it from there.” Cheryl Preston is operating the Klark Teknik DN9696. “I love it; I had it up and running straight out of the box and its ease of use is unbelievable,” she says. The benefits of the DN9696 are twofold on this show. Firstly, with no time to soundcheck on an average show day, it’s invaluable for virtual soundchecking. “Having a multitrack of the actual show as it’s supposed to sound is wonderful because we can pull it up, tune the PA, and even if we only have an hour, we’re up and running,” says Preston. “And for recording the shows, rather than have a truck and a bunch of people turning up, and making sure they understand what’s going on and that it’s being done right, there’s one little box, and in three minutes you’re ready to go. It connects straight into the XL8 and is practically foolproof.” The DN9696 has been mounted inside a case, with hardwired connections to two external hard disc drives. “We average three shows on a set of hard drives, then I pull them out, put them into a box and ship them to the studio for remixing; it’s that easy,” says Preston. Both Dowdle and Preston are more than happy with the increased functionality and flexibility the XL8 and DN9696 have added to the tour. “The XL4 was the best sounding analogue console that I’d ever used, and Midas have done such a great job of translating that sound to digital that I have the best of both worlds,” concludes Dowdle. “The XL8 has quickly become my all time favourite console, bar none. The shows just keep getting better and better thanks to the XL8.”

Tori Amos takes studio on the road with dual Midas PRO6 systems Tori Amos has embarked on her Sinful Attraction tour with two Midas PRO6 live audio systems running identical setups at FOH and on monitors. FOH engineer Mark Hawley and monitor man Marcel Van Limbeek have recorded and toured with Amos for 15 years, and strive to reproduce the sound created in the studio in a live situation. To this end, the very same outboard units used in the original studio recordings have not only been reproduced, but duplicated at FOH and on monitors. “It’s a comfort blanket; it’s what I’m used to,” says Hawley. “Marcel and I make all of Tori’s albums using an analogue desk, and this is the setup we’ve used over the years; we like the way it colours the sounds. As far as mixing goes it’s identical to the mix that comes out of the studio console.” This complex and unusual setup is being assisted by many of the PRO6’s features. “I like the fact that everything can be accessed instantly on the PRO6,” says Hawley. “I have the drums, bass, keyboards and piano on VCA (Variable Control Association) groups so I can mix them. Then I have four channels of Tori’s vocals, and I’ve found the PRO6 works better for this than anything else.” Two vocal mics - one on a keyboard and one on a piano - come into individual channels which can be muted as necessary. “I never look at those channels, there’s no EQ or anything going on with them,” continues Hawley. “They’re fed into a group which inputs back into three channels, with a different compressor on each, depending on what songs she’s singing. I just push that fader up and unmute one of the two vocals

with the auto mutes. Then those three channels are fed into another group which has the EQ inserted on it, which is an overall EQ for either vocal.” Hawley is also using the PRO6 automation to finess the shows when no musicians are present. “During the day I play last night’s show back through the nearfields, take one song, work on that till I’m happy with it then store it in a snapshot,” he says. “There are over 70 different songs programmed into the console – Tori learns a couple of new songs every day so I have to keep up with that.” And taking the situation full circle, Hawley and Van Limbeek have been mixing bonus live tracks for a forthcoming Christmas release, Midwinter Graces, through the PRO6. Over on monitors, Van Limbeek explains that he and Hawley have long been used to working as a team. “There’s a great deal of trust between us, and in this situation the way the audio is being distributed means we’re operating the same system, as all audio sources on stage are being split digitally between the two PRO6 systems,” he says. One of the PRO6’s features is deterministic latency; invaluable when executing multiple A to D conversions which can result in differing latencies and phase shifting. This is particularly noticeable where in-ear monitors are being used. “There is some latency as we’re running analogue to digital and back again, in and out of the outboard gear,” says Van Limbeek. “But I love the fact the PRO6 compensates for any latency issues, both inside and external to the desk, and Tori has never complained about latency. As far as the desk is concerned, I’ve been having no problems, and a small amount of latency is a price worth paying for the sound quality we get.”

Sharp or flat and shows how far away from in-tune the note is. When the note is sharp or flat the entire two-color display lights up in bright orange. When the note goes in-tune the display changes to a bright green. The ZOIDs each have two tuning modes. In the Clip Mode the tuner senses the notes of the instrument through the clip. This means the ZOID focuses on the note and rejects background noise, making it easy to tune when everyone else in the band is playing. In Mic Mode the ZOIDs use a built-in mic to pickup the notes. This allows for easy sharing of the tuner among everyone in the band. Both ZOIDs feature a Calibration function allowing the tuner to match pitch from a reference of 433 to 447 Hz.

Purchased for the Ukrainian tour of Russian singer Grigoriy Leps, it has been out constantly since its arrival, and is currently on an autumn tour with Philipp Kirkorov. “We’ve had very positive experiences using Midas consoles and when we learned there was an affordable Midas digital console it was just a question of time before we purchased it,” says Vitaliy Siroshtan, sound engineer with Jazz-Club Service. “It is very easy and quick to master, with engineers able to start working on it after just a couple of hours. The functions are simple to understand and it has a very intuitive control layout. All the engineers embraced it at their first encounter, despite previous experiences they may have had with digital consoles. But the most important thing is that the digital interface and functions haven’t affected the perfect Midas sound that we are used to, and the preamps sound absolutely fantastic! “The PRO6 has become popular throughout our tours of the Ukrainian, with many sound engineers coming to have a closer look, so we can be sure it will start to be specified. We are very optimistic about the future of PRO6 in the Ukraine.” Pavel Vorotnikov, monitor engineer for Russian pop singer Philipp Kirkorov’s 40-date tour across the Ukraine, is enjoying working with the PRO6. “I was pleasantly surprised by the intuitive control interface; it’s very compact but every function and control is right at your fingertips at the time you need it,” he says. “Another advantage of the PRO6 is its sound, which is so ‘fat’ in the in-ear-monitors, and Philipp likes it very much. Shure Mics Hit the Stage in London’s “Rat Pack” Show NILES, IL, November 17, 2009 — Mention The Rat Pack to anyone with a love of great music from the 50s and 60s and classics like “Volare,” “Fly Me To The Moon,” and “New York, New York” instantly spring to mind. Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., and Dean Martin epitomized the cool and glamour of the era with unparalleled lifestyles that captivated a global audience. They were film stars, showmen, comedians, and playboys, but most of all…it was about their music. Chris Whybrow, the live sound engineer responsible for the West End show “Frank, Sammy & Dean – The Rat Pack Live from Las Vegas” has spent his career working on a string of award-winning theater productions and on tour with artists and bands like Kaiser Chiefs, Coldplay, and Dizzie Rascal. But with “The Rat Pack,” it’s all about combining great sound with authentic style. “When you’re recreating some of the biggest classics ever to be recorded,” said Whybrow, “you need to be certain the gear you’re using is up to the job.” When London’s West End celebrates these performers, it also celebrates some of the finest music ever recorded. So, it stands to reason that “The Rat Pack” show had to set the bar higher for sound quality than any other, which is why several Shure microphones, including the KSM9, KSM137, Beta 87, Beta 98, Beta 91, SM58®, and 55SH are used for vocals and the backline during the performances. “We’re using a lot of Shure microphones on this show,” said Whybrow, “but the star is undoubtedly the KSM9 handheld condenser. We have two in black, but the six main ones we use are in champagne. They sound fantastic. With the KSM9s, I don’t need to treat the sound of their voices…it’s pretty much just flat, natural sound. You don’t really have to put any EQ on, as they’re a very natural sounding microphone.” Chris has used KSM9s in some of his previous theater designs – including “Thriller Live,” the show that celebrates the career of Michael Jackson – so he was already familiar with what they were capable of, but he isn’t alone. The performers have been impressed with them, too. “The performers love them, actually,” said Whybrow. “The performer playing Dean Martin especially loves them! During the show the mics come in for a bit of abuse, so it’s good that the housing on them is really strong. The capsule is also shock-mounted, making it ideal for hand-held performance, especially seeing as they get thrown off stage every performance – after ’Sammy Davis Jr.‘does ’That Old Black Magic.’ At the end of the song, he swings the mic around and lobs it off the stage and someone catches it. Well, that’s the plan – it’s been dropped a few times now, but it still works!” So after designing the sound for “The Rat Pack,” does Chris ever have enough of hearing these tracks?

JMSON invests in all-digital package from Midas and Klark Teknik Rental company JMSON, located in Agen in the South of France, has added two Midas PRO6 live audio systems and a Klark Teknik DN9696 high resolution audio recorder to its inventory, purchased from French distributor EVI Audio France. JMSON has specialised in music and corporate events for over four decades, supplying packages comprising sound reinforcement systems, stage structures and lighting as well as backline. The purchase of the PRO6 consoles was a logical move, in line with the company’s policy of offering state-of-the-art solutions to their customers, as well as a response to the growing demand for digital technology. Sound designer Christopher Boyes remains a huge fan of Dynaudio AIR 20 Reference Monitors “A mix developed in my sound-design suite will translate accurately to any dubbing stage or screening room.” Designing sound for motion pictures requires a rare combination of art and science. To paint a picture for the ear involves a deep appreciation of how sound affects people in ways that can suggest a range of emotions, while the manipulation and processing of audio signals involves access to the sharpest tools in the toolbox. For leading practitioner Christopher Boyes, accurate playback monitoring is a key ingredient to his success. “I have been using Dynaudio Acoustics AIR 20 monitor loudspeakers for several years and like the smooth sound that I get from them. I have a tremendous amount of confidence that a mix developed in my sound-design suite will translate accurately to any dubbing stage or screening room.” For many years this Oscar-winning sound designer and re-recording engineer has worked at both a number of leading post-production facilities around the world, and his own personal-use facility in Inverness, Marin County, Northern California. Boyes was most recently nominated this past year for an Oscar® for his outstanding work in Ironman, and has won Oscars for Best Sound Editing on Pearl Harbor and Titanic, in addition to Best Sound Mixing for King Kong and Lord of The Rings: The Return of The King. His current projects include Lovely Bones and Avatar. “I love the sweet sound produced by these Dynaudio AIR speakers,” Boyes continues. “The warm sound means that I am not working with a harsh and brittle response that you get with some other monitors – with the AIRs you take that distraction out of the mix.”

“My AIR speakers push me as a sound designer because I need to bring out subtleties in critical elements. I can work with confidence and know reliably the tracks I produce will sound good elsewhere wherever I take them.” Unusually, Boyes has mounted his array of AIR 20 Active Reference Monitors upside down at his private editorial and mixing facility, where he uses six self-powered AIR monitor arrays with three up-front for left, center and right, and three behind as LCR surrounds for EX-format 6.1-channel mixing. A companion BM 14S Active Subwoofer houses a single 12-inch driver. “I prefer to use the three-way full-range AIR 20 speakers when they are mounted fairly high on stands, above the video monitors. That configuration, which was designed and laid out for me by [local acoustician and room analyzer] Bob Ho-
das, works very well for me,” the sound designer offers. “Also, the 20’s unique design with built-in D-to-A converters means that I can feed them from my Synclavier keyboards, for example, or a DVD, or directly from the 48 kHz digital output from my Digidesign Pro Tools|HD digital audio workstation. That is a very flexible option that I wouldn’t get with other brands of monitors.” Boyes also uses another product from the TC Group: A TC Electronic Reverb 6000 Processor. “I use the 6000 all the time to create realistic-sounding ambiences and reverberant spaces,” the designer states. “I love the range of multichannel spaces I can call up from the factory and user presets, including Reflector, VSS3-Series and a whole raft of other user-friendly algorithms.”

Through Sunken Eyes uses the Powercore 6000 Through Sunken Eyes began their reign of terror in late 2006 when a Bahraini guy called Hostile H decided to put together a band. Unfortunately, the poor dude couldn’t find any musicians with enough balls at the time in Bahrain. How sad. But I’ll tell you what, it aint easy to find serious musicians in a country where metal fans are labeled as Satanists and are vilified by long-bearded religious morons. So, instead of giving up and feeling sorry for himself, Hostile H went ahead and recorded a bunch of original songs playing all instruments himself. The result was an eleven-track, 23 minute mini-album entitled “Fried Brains and Pearl Champagne.” The CD received a lot of attention in the local scene and got great reviews in www.phride.com, the largest online resource for metal music in the middle east.
