Michael Hix
Twenty-year-old vocalist Zoi Chavez, was born and raised in the beautiful state of New Mexico! Her musical interests started at a very early age. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Pie Jesu” was the first vocal piece that she performed, at the tender age of five at a local church. At the age of eight, she joined a local children’s choir, and a few years later she joined the Symphony Orchestra of Albuquerque (SOA) Choir, directed by Dr. Charles McDaniel. There she had the opportunity to perform many solos, including various works by Mozart, Handel, Haydn, Schubert, and Fauré. In 2007 she began studying with Jacqueline Zander-Wall and performed in many studio classes. Zoi is an alumnus of the Young Voices at the Santa Fe Opera program, where she studied under Robert Tweten, Kathleen Clawson, and Michael Wilson. Zoi has participated and placed first in many competitions including: the Music Teacher’s National Association (MTNA) in the national competition in her division, NATS, and the Vocal Artistry Art Song. Edvard Grieg
Born 1843, Bergen, Norway Died 1907, Bergen, Norway
“Holberg” Suite, op. 40 (1885) Grieg’s “From Holberg’s Time: A Suite in Olden Style” was written to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of DanishNorwegian writer Ludvig Holberg (1684– 1754). The city of Bergen (both Grieg and Holberg’s birthplace) commissioned two works from Grieg for the occasion, a cantata for male voices which was quickly forgotten, and the “Holberg” Suite. The cantata was to be performed outdoors surrounding the new Holberg monument, and the suite in the concert hall. The celebration was in December and Grieg wrote of the potential for disaster with an outdoor cantata in the midst of a Norwegian winter. He wrote, “I can see it all before me, snow, hail, storm and every kind of foul weather, huge male choir with open mouths, the rain streaming into them, myself conducting with waterproof cape, winter coat, galoshes, and umbrella! And a cold afterwards, of course, or goodness knows what kind of illness! Oh well, it’s one way of dying for one’s country!” Since Holberg’s life coincided with the great Baroque masters Bach and Handel, Grieg chose the Baroque form of the suite for his tribute to. He infuses the work with contemporary writing and style within the confines of Baroque dance forms. The “Holberg” Suite was originally written for piano, and following its success after the premiere, Grieg transcribed it for string orchestra the following year. The “Holberg” Suite is unified by a central key (the norm for Baroque Suites) of “G”–G Major for all movements, save the Air, which is in g minor. The Praeludium gives the illusion of “moto perpetuo,” written in toccata style with figuration and running scales throughout. The Sarabande is an elegant and stately dance in 3/4 time which is a stunning contrast to the animated state of the first movement. The
Gavotte includes the contrasting dance of a Musette; a French dance typically danced to bagpipe accompaniment. Grieg includes this characteristic by writing a drone in the lower strings. The Air is not a dance, but rather an Andante religioso, often compared to Bach’s “Air on the G String.” The final movement is a Rigadoun, a lively French dance in duple meter, whose ebullient character bookends a lyrical middle section. In the fast sections Grieg writes the violin and viola soloists as imitations of the Norwegian Hardanger fiddle, used in much of the country’s folk music. ●
Georg Philipp Telemann Born 1681, Magdeburg, Prussia Died 1767, Hamburg, Germany
Trumpet Concerto in D Major (c. 1708–1714) Georg Philipp Telemann is one of the most prolific composers of the Baroque period. He was a German contemporary of Handel and J.S. Bach, and in his lifetime, was equally as famous as Handel and much more famous than Bach. The Trumpet Concerto in D Major is quite possibly the first trumpet concerto written for the instrument. Written sometime between 1708 and 1714, the concerto is written in the Baroque form of the sonata da chiesa, featuring a four-movement slow-fastslow-fast tempo archetype. It was originally written for the valveless Baroque trumpet that would have been the instrument of choice at the time of its composition. The first movement’s melodic material is given solely to the trumpet allowing the instrument to show off its lyrical qualities and beautiful sonorities. The second movement splits the melodic material with the strings in a call and response style. The third movement is written just for strings and continuo, and is in the style of a saraband. The trumpet returns for the joyful fourth movement where once again the melodic material is divided between the soloist and orchestra. ●
“Oh well, it’s one way of dying for one’s country!” — Edvard Grieg
Tomaso Albinoni
Born 1671, Venice, Italy Died 1750/51, Venice Italy
Concerto “San Marco” (c. 1712) Tomaso Albinoni was an incredibly successful and prolific Baroque composer whose popularity was at its height during his lifetime, often a rarity with composers. He referred to himself as an amateur musician, but was well-trained in music and also an excellent violinist. Perhaps his choosing of the word “amateur” is because he came from a wealthy family and didn’t need to compose or perform to earn his living. He started out writing church music, but without much success. His first accolades came with an early opera, where he found his niche – operas, cantatas, concerti, and sonatas. The Concerto “San Marco” was adapted for trumpet from the Violin Sonata in A Major, Op. 6, No. 11. The sonata was published in Albinoni’s collection Trattenimenti armonici, loosely translated to “Harmonic Entertainment.” The trumpet adaptation was made popular by the famous virtuoso Maurice André, whose recordings of both Baroque trumpet concerti and Baroque works adapted from other instruments, are considered some of the most spectacular ever recorded. As with the Telemann, the Albinoni is written in four movements and follows the same tempo sequence. The first movement is a slow and lyrical movement in which the trumpet takes center stage. In the second movement the trumpet and strings share much of the same melodic material, but without long periods of just soloist, or

Often one force will start an idea, only to be interrupted by the opposing force, and often answering each other in a musical game of “anything you can do, I can do better,” with the trumpet being the clear winner. As the movement progresses the forces becomes slightly less combative in preparation for the upcoming slow movement. The andante is in the minor mode and very poignant. It is a brief respite that immediately leads into the allegro, written in 3/8 time, and characterized by brilliant sixteenth-note arpeggiated figures.

Franz Schubert
Born 1797, Vienna, Austria Died 1828, Vienna, Austria
Mass No. 2 in G Major (1815) Schubert composed his Mass in G Major when he was merely eighteen years old. He completed the Mass in a mere six days, and it was premiered (as was his first Mass) in the Lichtenthal church where he had attended services as a child. The Mass includes the traditional Roman Catholic text, but Schubert does take some artistic liberties and varies the words by way of repetition, reordering, and most notably in the Credo, a few deletions. Schubert’s Mass in G was never published in his lifetime. In fact, it was first published in 1845, but by another composer. The composer and music director at St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague, Robert Führer, had somehow gotten the work published under his name. Schubert’s brother, Ferdinand, was able to rectify the situation, and it is believed Führer ended up in prison for an embezzlement charge unrelated to his pilfering of Schubert’s Mass. Originally the Mass was scored for soprano, tenor, and bass soloists, mixed chorus, strings, and organ. Sometime later Schubert added trumpet and timpani parts. These parts which were initially considered spurious by Schubert scholars, thought to be the additions of either Ferdinand or Führer, have since been deemed authentic. ●
