Don Quixote Synopsis

Characters Don Quixote de la Mancha Sancho Panza, his faithful servant Lorenzo, an innkeeper Kitri, Lorenzo’s daughter and the town beauty Basilio, a barber, in love with Kitri Mercedes, the Toreador’s beloved Dulcinea, Don Quixote’s beloved Gamache, a nobleman and Kitri’s intended Villagers, Suitors, Flower Girls, Toreadors, Gypsies, Fairies, Cupid, Knights of the Silver Moon Prologue

Don Quixote’s Study

Don Quixote de la Mancha, an old nobleman, humbly resides in Barcelona, locking himself away in his study amongst his books. He settles into an armchair surrounded by books, delighting in stories of brave knights rescuing beautiful maidens and tales of beautiful fairies and other fantastical creatures. As he reads of the chivalrous deeds of knights on behalf of their betrothed, Don Quixote dreams of his beloved Dulcinea, a noblewoman so beautiful and pure he believes she must be divinity. Gradually he nods off to dream of their romantic adventures in a world of chivalry in service to the feminine ideal. Suddenly his servant, Sancho Panza, hurriedly rushes in, awakening him. Don Quixote tells Sancho that he is determined to seek adventures as a knight-errant, searching for a world where chivalry still exists, believing that is where he will find his beloved Dulcinea. Don Quixote orders Sancho to ready his horse and prepare for their journey. Act I, Scene 1

The Marketplace

Kitri, the innkeeper’s beautiful daughter, steals out of her house to meet her beloved, the barber Basilio. Her father, Lorenzo, sees the lovers and sends Basilio away, bringing Kitri to tears. A rich nobleman Gamache, is also in love with Kitri and goes to Lorenzo to ask for his daughter’s hand. The innkeeper accepts with delight, but Kitri, appalled at the thought of wedding the foppish nobleman, runs away. Dancing resumes in the square as Don Quixote and Sancho enter the village.

6

2013/14 Season

Lorenzo runs out to meet the newcomers. Don Quixote, taking Lorenzo for the lord of a famous castle, falls to his knees and begs to be allowed to serve him. Kitri returns and, taken by her beauty, Don Quixote determines she is his Dulcinea, whose divinity evil magicians have reduced to human form. Becoming jealous of her affection for Basilio, Don Quixote attempts to woo her by partnering her in a minuet. Charmed by his chivalry, Kitri ignores Basilio who quickly puts an end to the flirtation. Lorenzo berates Kitri for carrying on with Basilio. Kitri and Basilio quickly flee as Don Quixote and Sancho set out on the long trek in pursuit. Act I, Scene 2

A Camp of Gypsies

A gypsy foretells the arrival of Kitri and Basilio, as well as the approach of Don Quixote. The gypsy men keep their women hidden in protection and prepare for a conflict but when they see the harried lovers, they realize there is no threat. Taken by Kitri’s beauty and Basilio’s bravado, they offer to help when Don Quixote and Sancho Panza arrive. Don Quixote is delighted with the gypsy’s dance, but, mistaking Kitri for Dulcinea, and the gypsies for soldiers attacking her, he rises to assault them. Kitri is lead away to safety. Exhausted and confused, Don Quixote sees the moon and takes it for his Dulcinea. He tries to reach her by climbing the windmill but slips and falls unconscious at Sancho’s feet. Basilio and Sancho carry Don Quixote to his trusty steed, and Sancho begins their trek back to the village. After many hours of travel, they stop to rest and Don Quixote dozes off, dreaming as darkness falls. Act I, Scene 3

The Enchanted Garden of Dulcinea

Don Quixote awakens in a beautiful garden. At the entrance stands Dulcinea, surrounded by beautiful maidens and the Knights of the Silver Moon, the maidens’ chivalrous cavaliers. Don Quixote kneels before his beloved and she is transformed into Kitri. Cupid appears and they all dance for him in Don Quixote’s ideal Elysium. Dulcinea reappears and they are reunited in his dream.

Act II, Scene 1

The Tavern

Kitri enters with Basilio and joins in the dancing. At the height of the merriment, Lorenzo and Gamache arrive, followed by Don Quixote and Sancho. Seeing his daughter, Lorenzo decides to give his blessing to her union with the nobleman Gamache. Basilio becomes annoyed and, reproaching Kitri for her unfaithfulness, pulls out his razor to stab himself. As he lies dying he begs Lorenzo to unite him with Kitri before death takes him, but Lorenzo and Gamache refuse. Don Quixote approaches them and challenges them to a duel for having refused a dying man’s wish. Gamache declines to fight but taking pity, Lorenzo agrees to unite Basilio and Kitri. At this moment, Basilio pulls out the razor and hops up, unhurt, revealing his trickery. Lorenzo, seeing he has been fooled, tries to go back on his word, but even Gamache realizes it is too late; Kitri and Basilio are betrothed. Lorenzo, seeing how happy his daughter is and how much in love they are, finally accepts the betrothal and leads away a devastated Gamache. Act II, Scene 2

The Wedding

The villagers celebrate the wedding of Basilio and Kitri. Flower girls and their suitors dance in merriment as Don Quixote begins to court a village woman he believes is his beloved Dulcinea in disguise. Flower Girls and their suitors join Kitri and Basilio to dance in joy and the entire village dances. Seeing the merriment of the united couples and sensing he has finally found his own Dulcinea, Don Quixote’s dream of a world of chivalry is finally realized. ●

Ludwig Minkus

Born 1826, Vienna, Austria Died 1917, Vienna, Austria

Don Quixote Ballet (1869) The composer Ludwig Minkus was born in Austria, but was of Czechoslovakian descent and worked most of his career in Russia. His main compositional contributions to the musical world were approximately twenty ballets, with Don Quixote providing him the most success. The ballet was written in 1869 and based on a portion of the classic Cervantes novel Don Quixote de la Mancha. The first version of the ballet was choreographed by Marius Petipa and staged with four acts and eight scenes. It premiered in Moscow on December 26, 1869, performed by the famed Ballet of the Imperial Bolshoi Theatre. Minkus and Petipa later revised and expanded Don Quixote to five acts and eleven scenes, and this version premiered in 1873. Neither of these staging versions stood the test of time, and modern productions of the ballet are derived from a third version, staged by Alexander Gorsky in 1900. In 1980 Mikhail Baryshnikov restaged Don Quixote for the American Ballet Theatre, using choreography from both the Petipa and Gorsky versions. Baryshnikov’s staging is still popular in modern productions. ● Program Notes ® Lori Newman
