Igor Stravinsky

Born 1882, Oranienbaum, near St. Petersburg, Russia Died 1971, New York City, USA

Concerto in EH, “Dumbarton Oaks” (1937–1938) Igor Stravinsky’s chamber concerto, “Dumbarton Oaks,” was written for the thirtieth wedding anniversary of Robert Woods Bliss and his wife Mildred. The couple were great patrons of the arts and lived in a nineteenth-century estate named Dumbarton Oaks, located in the Georgetown area of Washington D.C. The premiere took place at Dumbarton Oaks on May 8, 1938. Stravinsky had planned to conduct the performance but was hospitalized with a bout of tuberculosis; instead, his good friend Nadia Boulanger conducted the premiere performance. Stravinsky conducted the first public performance in Paris on June 4 of the same year. It is said that the concerto is patterned after J.S. Bach’s Brandenburg Concerti, and that the first movement borrows from Brandenburg Concerto No. 3. Stravinsky said of the comparisons: I played Bach regularly during the composition of the Concerto, and was greatly attracted to the “Brandenburg” Concertos. Whether or not the first theme of my first movement is a conscious borrowing from the third Brandenburg, however, I do not know. What I can say is that Bach would most certainly have been delighted to loan it to me; to borrow in this way was exactly the sort of thing he liked to do.

Written during Stravinsky’s neo-classic period, the concerto is scored for an interesting complement of instrumentalists: one flute, one clarinet, one bassoon, two horns, three violins, three violas, two cellos, and two double basses. It is broken into three movements but played without pause. ●

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Born 1756, Salzburg, Austria Died 1791, Vienna, Austria

Violin Concerto No. 5 in A Major, K. 219, “Turkish” (1775) While we may associate Mozart with his prowess on the keyboard, he was nearly equally as skilled as a violinist. His first official post was as concertmaster of PrinceArchbishop Colloredo’s court orchestra in Salzburg. He served in this capacity from 1773–1777. Mozart was not terribly happy in this position–the pay was meager, and he felt creatively stifled in the role. In 1775 Mozart wrote four of his five violin concertos, most likely for his own use. The concerto is nicknamed “Turkish,” stemming from the minor mode section in the middle of the last movement. The late eighteenth-century saw a rise in the interest of this type of music, and Mozart would again use Turkish elements in his 1782 opera The Abduction from the Sergalio. Many of the “Turkish” elements (the word Turkish is in quotation marks because the European’s depiction of Turkish music was hardly accurate) relied heavily on the use of bombastic percussion writing. Since this didn’t really fit in with the tenor of a violin concerto,

“Bach would most certainly have been delighted to loan it to me; to borrow in this way was exactly the sort of thing he liked to do.” —Igor Stravinsky

The New Mexico Philharmonic

and because Mozart had no percussion players in his ensemble, he ingeniously designated that the cellos and basses should play with the wooden part of their bows (called col legno) to replicate the noise and spirit of the missing drums and cymbals. ●

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Symphony No. 40 in g minor, K. 550 (1788)

Much mystery surrounds Mozart’s penultimate symphony, the Symphony No. 40. The question of whether or not this symphony was ever performed in Mozart’s lifetime is the nagging question, and if so, the question remains as to whether Mozart was present at any of the performances. Earlier research had suggested no to both questions, but later findings seem to point to the possibility that Mozart indeed heard this symphony before his death in 1791. The other question is whether Mozart wrote the Symphony with an upcoming performance in mind, or whether he simply wrote it for posterity (which seems highly unlikely knowing what we know about Mozart’s compositional habits). The symphony was revised by Mozart with the addition of clarinets, offering two possibilities that would lead us to believe he in fact did hear the work: 1) Mozart chose to revise the symphony and add clarinets after possibly hearing a performance, or 2) Mozart revised it for a particular performance with a particular ensemble that requested clarinets, and more than likely he would have attended the performance. Mozart composed his Symphony No. 40 during a most productive burst of symphonic writing in 1788. He finished his Symphony No. 39 a month earlier, and his masterpiece, the Symphony No. 41, “Jupiter,” a few weeks after the completion of No. 40. The Symphony No. 40 is only one of two symphonies that Mozart wrote in the minor mode, the other being the Symphony No. 25, also in g minor. It is for this reason that the Symphony No. 40 is often referred to as “The Great g minor” to distinguish the two from one another. ● Program Notes ® Lori Newman nmphil.org

Join host Brent Stevens for our second program which will explore some of Brahms’s most loved chamber music. This concert will discuss Brahms’s fascination with the clarinet (a relatively new instrument at the time) and a musical theme derived from the name of one of the composer’s many paramours. Musicians of the New Mexico Philharmonic will perform movements from Brahms’s Clarinet Quintet in b minor and his Sextet No. 2 in G Major. ●
