Georg Philipp Telemann

Born 1681, Magdeburg, Prussia Died 1767, Hamburg, Germany

Tafelmusik Suite in B-flat Major, TWV 55:B1 (1733) Georg Philipp Telemann was one of the most prolific composers of the Baroque period. He was a contemporary of Handel and J.S. Bach, and in his lifetime, was more famous than either of them. His sheer number of compositions is astounding, and for a while, The Guinness Book of World Records listed him as the most generative composer in history. His Tafelmusik, or Table Music, is a massive undertaking, worthy of his inclusion in the record books. If Telemann were alive today, we would refer to him as an entrepreneur and a “go-getter.” In addition to composing, he was very active in the publishing and advertising of his own music. He knew the importance of marketing before MBAs and marketing degrees were all the rage. The Tafelmusik concept hearkens back to the tradition of providing scads of background music for all kinds of feasts, banquets, and outdoor celebrations. Telemann’s Tafelmusik was issued in three sets and contains suites for various instrument combinations, some of them unorthodox. The Suite in B-flat Major is scored for two oboes, two violins, string accompaniment, and continuo. The first movement opens in French overture style and is filled with characteristic dotted rhythms. Telemann turns the form on end with the inclusion of a sixteenth-dotted eighth rhythm, or a short-long, as opposed to the expected long-short rhythm so prevalent

in the French overture. This opening is followed by a brisk allegro featuring the pairs of oboes and violins in imitative and soloistic sections, followed by a reprise of the Ouverture. The second movement is stately and in 6/8 time with the pairs of oboes and violins alternating the solo line. The Allegresse is a blisteringly fast allegro filled with fast passagework for the soloists. Postillons is another bright allegro that plays with hemiola and octave displacement. A slower tempo returns in Flaterie, featuring an imitative call and response between the pairs of soloists. The Badinage returns us to an upbeat tempo whose melodic material is filled with thirds, and the finale is a grand Menuet in 3/8 time. ●

Franz Joseph Haydn

Born 1732, Rohrau, Austria Died 1809, Vienna, Austria

Organ Concerto in C Major, Hob. XVIII:1 (1756) Little is known regarding the composition of Haydn’s Keyboard Concerto in C Major, appropriated for organ in this performance. It is a relatively early composition in Haydn’s long and illustrious career and has all the hallmarks of the late Baroque and early Classical eras. It follows the standard concerto format of fast-slow-fast. The first movement is grand and martial, filled with dotted and fanfare-type rhythms in the tutti sections that emphasize the trumpets and oboes. The solo part is rife with figurations in both scalar and arpeggiated instances. There is not much in the way of formal development of themes, but harmonically, Haydn certainly drifts into adventurous territory throughout the middle section. The slow movement, written in the key of F Major, opens with an extended

Telemann’s sheer number of compositions is astounding, and for a while, The Guinness Book of World Records listed him as the most generative composer in history. The New Mexico Philharmonic

introduction featuring the violins in a simple and elegant theme. The solo part is often scalar with figurations and trills to even it out. Both tutti and soloist rely heavily on the appoggiatura as a unifying element. Toward the end of the movement, the soloist is given a chance to shine with an extended cadenza. The finale is brisk and bright with a jubilant and celebratory feel, thanks again to the use of the trumpets and oboes in the accompaniment. The most virtuoso of the movements, the soloist has their hands full with an abundance of trills, mordents, and sixteenth-note triplets. ●

Tomaso Albinoni / Remo Giazotto Albinoni: Born 1671, Venice, Italy Died 1751, Venice, Italy / Giazotto: Born 1910, Rome, Italy Died 1998, Pisa, Italy

Adagio in g minor (1958) The Albinoni/Giazotto Adagio in g minor is among one of the most popular works of the Italian Baroque, and more than likely, not a product of the Italian Baroque at all. The story begins not in the 1700s, but in postWorld War II 1945, when Italian musicologist and Albinoni biographer Remo Giazotto allegedly found a small musical fragment by Albinoni in the Saxon State Library in Dresden, Germany. Giazotto claimed that the fragment was a six-measure melody with figured bass, and he asserted that it was probably a portion of a sonata da chiesa, or church sonata, from Albinoni’s Op. 4 dated around 1708. This is where critical thinkers may start to doubt Giazotto’s story: No one else ever saw the fragment, and it was soon thereafter lost. Giazotto then orchestrated the fragment (or if you’re a non-believer, composed it himself) and attached Albinoni’s name to the work. The cynical among us may look at the situation and think Giazotto attached the name Albinoni, a known compositional commodity, so he could take advantage of the post-war interest in Baroque music. These same people would then point to the fact that Giazotto then copyrighted the composition and probably made a great deal of money off of the alleged musical fragment and Tomaso Albinoni’s name. While the compositional process, timeline, and attribution are in doubt, the beauty, pathos, and sheer emotion that the work evokes cannot be denied. The work combines the stateliness and regality of the Baroque with the passion and spirit of the Romantic. ● continued on 8 nmphil.org

Ottorino Respighi

Born 1879, Bologna, Italy Died 1936, Rome, Italy

Suite in G Major for Strings and Organ (1905) The Suite in G Major is an early neo-Baroque work by Ottorino Respighi that pays homage to J.S. Bach, Arcangelo Corelli, and Girolamo Frescobaldi. It is written in the style of a concerto grosso, a popular form from the Baroque, which features a concertino (solo) and ripieno (tutti ensemble) as opposing forces. The first movement is a moto perpetuo with luxurious and dense orchestration. The second movement Aria, originally composed in 1901 as a singlemovement work, is tuneful with a sense of melancholy. The third movement Pastorale, written in a harmonically adventurous minor mode, resembles a siciliano. Toward the end of the movement, Respighi writes a stunning pedal point that creates a wonderfully intense stasis. The Cantico, much like the Pastorale, is written with heavy chromaticism, perhaps the most owing to Frescobaldi’s influence. Respighi chooses to avoid a rousing final movement, but rather one that is dramatic and languid. Throughout the Suite in G Major, Respighi takes Baroque melodies, ideas, and harmonies, reworks them, and makes them shiny and new with modern orchestration and contemporary flair. As with all of Respighi’s works, the orchestration is vibrant and brilliant, perhaps thanks to the few lessons he had with the famed composer and orchestrator Rimsky-Korsakov in the early 1900s. The Suite in G Major is rarely performed or recorded–a hidden gem in the organ repertoire. ●

Bobby Shew trumpet

Born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Bobby Shew began playing the guitar at the age of eight and switched to the trumpet at age ten. By the time he was thirteen, he was playing at local dances with a number of bands, and by fifteen, he had put together his own group to play at dances, occasional concerts, and in jazz coffee houses. He spent most of his high school days playing as many as six nights a week in a dinner club, giving him an early start to his professional career. He then spent three years as the jazz trumpet soloist in the famed NORAD multiservice band. Shortly after leaving NORAD, he joined the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra under the direction of Sam Donahue, which among other things, gave him the chance to perform quite a bit with trumpet legend Charlie Shavers. After his stint with Tommy Dorsey, Bobby was asked to play with Woody Herman’s band upon Bill Chase’s recommendation. He then spent some time playing for Della Reese and Buddy Rich, whose big band had just been formed. Many other similar situations followed, and Bobby played lead trumpet for a number of pop stars. This brought Bobby to live in Las Vegas, where he became prominent in various hotels and casinos. By this time, Bobby was widely known for his strong lead playing rather than as a jazz soloist. So late in 1972, he decided to make a move to the Los Angeles area in order to get re-involved in developing as a jazz player. Once in Los Angeles, Bobby quickly found what he was looking for, and in the years to come, he spent time with the groups of Art Pepper, Bud Shank, the Horace Silver Quintet, and Frank Strazzeri-Sam Most, as well as numerous big bands such as Bill

Holman, Louie Bellson, Toshiko AkiyoshiLew Tabackin, Oliver Nelson, Bill Berry, Nat Pierce-Frank Capp Juggernaut, Ed Shaughnessy, Terry Gibbs, Benny Goodman, Maynard Ferguson, Neal Hefti, Don Menza, and Bob Florence. In addition to being a sideman, Bobby also became a leader around this time, recording many of his own albums. Several of these received very high accolades from critics and high placement on the airplay charts. One of his albums, Outstanding in His Field, was nominated for a Grammy in 1980, while Heavy Company was awarded the Jazz Album of the Year in 1983 by the Recording Industry Association of New Zealand (RIANZ). During this time, Bobby also found a great deal of studio work, including TV shows like Hawaii 5-O, The Streets Of San Francisco, The Bob Newhart Show, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Midnight Specials, Don Kirschner Rock Concert, Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley, and Eight Is Enough. His work on soundtracks includes Grease and Grease 2, Rocky and Rocky II, Six-Pack, The Muppet Movie, The Drivers, and Taxi. Today, in addition to a busy performing and private teaching schedule, Bobby spends a considerable amount of time actively involved in the educational system, conducting clinics and master classes at high schools and college campuses all over the world. Bobby has also been active on the Board of Directors of the International Trumpet Guild and has acted as National Trumpet Chairman for the International Association of Jazz Educator’s for 16 years. He authors numerous articles of educational interest in various trade magazines, all translated into several languages for worldwide distribution. During a period of traveling to New Zealand, Bobby acted as host for a weekly TV show entitled Just Jazz and has been in numerous artist-inresidence situations virtually all over the world. He has even had a few minor acting roles in movies and TV shows. He continues to tour internationally and to produce and record excellent music. He has released several recent albums for the MAMA Foundation including Playing with Fire (with Tom Harrell), Heavyweights (with Carl Fontana), and Salsa Caliente. In addition, for other labels, Bobby has released the highly regarded CD recorded with the Metropole Orchestra, and a double-CD set for Seabreeze Records of The Music of John Harmon. ●

The Fabulous Fifth: Match the Magnificence! Moving NMPhil to the Next Level.

FINANCIALS

We are writing to you today to share the joy we all feel as we celebrate your New Mexico Philharmonic’s 5th Anniversary season. The NMPhil has performed five seasons of excellent concerts with exemplary fiscal responsibility and meaningful community involvement. We operate very efficiently, carefully conserving the community’s resources, as a review of our numbers on the following page will show you. We are also writing because we want you to know that the success of our NMPhil is due directly to the generosity of this community. We would not be here without you. Our success is also possible because of the outstanding commitment and very hard work by all involved, especially the musicians, staff, volunteers, board, guest artists, and conductors.

NMPhil is managed as a business. The organization has operated on a $2,000,000 budget for its four full seasons, with very careful management, razor-thin margins, and no recurring debt. Here are some key business facts:

INCOME

Earned Donated Total Income per Season

EXPENSES

Total Expenses per Season

$1,000,000 $1,000,000 $2,000,000

(ticket sales, advertising, car raffle) (annual fund, individual donations, grants) Ticket sales pay less than half the cost of operating the NMPhil, which is managed extremely conservatively.

$2,000,000

With an overhead of 14% compared to 36% national average for non-profits.

Every musician is being paid an average of $7,000 per year. Every one of them is highly qualified; all are graduates of prestigious music schools and accepted as members of the orchestra through a very rigorous audition process. They continue with us because of their commitment, love of the music, and the hope that the orchestra continues on the road to a secure future. Each member of the staff wears multiple hats, works many hours per week beyond the standard 40, and are all paid very modestly. They are clearly doing this work because of their love for the NMPhil. Our guest soloists and conductors are all world class and have come to Albuquerque for a small part of their customary fees because they want to help us. They have believed in what we can do and have been an important part of creating our success. Our November 2015 Annual Fund Drive produced $166,000. While a new high for us, individuals and businesses in our community once donated substantially more to the orchestra. We are happy to report that the NMPhil is a great success even with the limited means presented to us. We are writing to you today with the hope and belief you will agree with us that the NMPhil is a key cultural asset to our community and that it is time to move the NMPhil to a level that is more sustainable for all involved—musicians, staff, volunteers, artists, and board—and that you will join us in The Fabulous Fifth: Match the Magnificence Campaign. With your support, the Fabulous Fifth will help us move your NMPhil to the next level. We will continue to be an important cultural asset to the community in any case, and with your support we will assure an even better future. We invite you to review the important information on the next page that explains in depth our operation and results. Please participate in our quest to take the NMPhil to the next level by making a new or increased donation and committing to additional support for upcoming seasons. We are happy to let you know that your donation will be matched by a group of dedicated donors and board members. Our deepest thanks,

Maureen Baca President

RESULTS

NMPhil has achieved four years of positive results, all with favorable trends, including: • Reaching 40,000+ audience members • Attaining audience satisfaction of 96% and artistic excellence of 97% • Achieving attendance at concerts of 75%+ of venue capacity, well above 50% industry average • Providing education programs that reach 18,000 students, impacting lives and academics • Being the only arts organization in New Mexico to ever receive Quality New Mexico’s Piñón Recognition for excellence in its organizational practices HOW THIS HAS BEEN MADE POSSIBLE

To make NMPhil successful on this budget, key stakeholders have made amazing commitments: • NMPhil Musicians have accepted limited work and fewer rehearsals, resulting in less income • NMPhil Staff (5 full time) all work multiple jobs • Guest Artists and Conductors have accepted greatly reduced fees • Every member of the Board of Directors has donated very generously of their time and resources

LET’S MOVE NMPHIL TO THE NEXT LEVEL

Achieving the next level means: • Increased work for the musicians • Being better able to attract and keep musicians • Continuing to bring in world-class soloists • Having our own conductor/music director • Serving the community better with expanding education programs and additional concerts HOW DO WE GET THERE?

• Raising $100,000+ in our 5th anniversary drive for the 2016 season • Gaining commitments to increase financial support in each of the coming five seasons • Achieving a $2,500,000 budget by our 10th season (by 2021)
