NEWS
LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends, Helping others through charitable giving is always in season. The holidays help us reflect on how bright each of us made the world around us. At the National MS Society, the holiday spirit of goodwill and helping others thrives year-round. It is embodied in our work every day to ensure the gifts we receive through donations, fundraisers and other contributions are used to fund the mission. Throughout Virginia and West Virginia, we help more than 12,000 individuals living with MS. Those with MS, as well as their families, friends, and healthcare professionals trust and count on us every day, not just once a season. We do not stop in our movement to provide services, educational programs, and to fund MS research. Likewise, we must work non-stop to raise funds to move us closer to a world free of MS. We generate funds in a variety of ways. On page 8 of this issue, you will find a full listing of our 2016 events, which includes Walk MS, Bike MS, On the Move Luncheons, and Dinner of Champions. These events annually raise 65 percent of our funding. Strategic Philanthropy including bequests and legacies, individual giving and workplace giving – contributes another 32 percent. The remaining 3 percent comes from in-kind contributions. Every dollar makes a difference and we hope you will connect with us in 2016 by participating in an event, volunteering, donating, or providing an in-kind donation of product or service. Happy Holidays,
Sherri Ellis Virginia - West Virginia President

YEAR-END GIFTS MAKE A DIFFERENCE As the year-end arrives and your thoughts turn toward year-end charitable giving, we hope you will remember the following about the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, in Virginia and West Virginia: 1. We consider you a member of our family. Whether you are a recent friend of the National MS Society or a longtime supporter, we value your interest and involvement. We consider you a partner with us in this great movement towards a world free of MS. You are part of our family. Together, we share a common commitment, a common mission. 2. We remain true to our mission. You can have confidence that we are staying the course. 3. We depend on your philanthropy. We rely on your financial support to help us accomplish our important mission. The more you give, the more we can do. It’s that simple. On the other hand, without you and our other supporters, we can not move toward a world free of MS. 4. We pledge financial fidelity. Like you, we wince when we hear of financial impropriety in corporations or nonprofit organizations. We affirm to you that financial integrity is a primary objective. Each contribution to the National MS Society is treated carefully and with a keen sense of stewardship. We maintain the highest standards of accountability and transparency. Our books are open, and we invite you to review our annual reports on our website, www.MSVirginia.org and www.MSWestVirginia.org. 5. We offer personalized service. WAYS TO GIVE
NOW: SOLUTIONS AND HOPE Melissa Martin can personally attest to the incredible impact that MS research can have on a person’s life. Diagnosed in 2009 with secondary-progressive multiple sclerosis, Martin joined a double-blind clinical study co-funded by the National MS Society and the National Institutes of Health for a promising new medication in 2014. “My hopes weren’t very high that the study would do anything for my symptoms,” says Martin, whose mobility issues and fatigue became so severe that she had to leave her home and husband to live with her parents. “I was falling all the time, bumping into walls, sleeping 16 hours a day. I wasn’t able to bathe or dress myself,” she remembers. “Mainly what I was hoping for was that the research could be used to help other people,” she says. But to her surprise, the research had a personal impact. “Now, I can do everything but drive. And I’ve moved back home with my husband.” While not every study has such a dramatic personal effect, many lead to a deeper understanding of the disease and make progress toward stopping MS in its tracks, restoring function and ending MS forever.
LIFE-CHANGING IMPACT
Incredible research advances have changed the landscape of MS treatments and strategies for living one’s best life with the disease. Take Nancy
LISA SAILOR, DIAGNOSED IN 1993. Speer, diagnosed with MS in 1993—before the first disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) were introduced. “For the first five or six years after my diagnosis, there wasn’t any kind of treatment,” she remembers. “The only thing my doctors could recommend was a vitamin and mineral regimen.” When DMTs became available, Speer was ecstatic. However, she found that the side effects that she experienced were a major drawback. But newly available infusion-based and oral MS medications became available, making a major difference in Speer’s life. “It’s absolutely amazing,” she says. So, she and her husband Ray Anderson are devoted to ensuring that other people with MS will benefit from research as much as she has. Toward that goal, they are

dedicated donors to the Society’s No Opportunity Wasted (NOW) MS Research campaign, which has funded Society research initiatives to stop MS, restore function and end MS since 2011, and is now drawing to an end.
UNPRECEDENTED PROGRESS
In just five years, the NOW campaign is responsible for more than a quarter of the nearly $900 million the Society has raised for MS research since the Society was founded in 1946. As a result, the promise of MS research is more apparent than ever, with three potential myelin repair treatments now in clinical trials and more potential treatments for MS – including progressive MS – in the pipeline than at any other time in history. Our understanding of the causes of the disease has also deepened significantly, with more than 100 genetic variants identified and several risk factors for developing MS confirmed. In addition, five new treatments became available, dramatically increasing the range of options for people with MS. Since the NOW campaign’s start, the Society has launched 779 cutting-edge research projects that include: • 71 clinical trials; • 137 grants to train promising MS researchers; • 132 projects to test rehabilitation and wellness approaches; and • 25 commercial research partnerships aimed at overcoming any barriers to developing promising new therapies.
In partnership with MS Societies of Italy, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Canada and the MS International Federation, the Society founded the International Progressive MS Alliance, which brings together a growing number of MS organizations and international experts to hone in on the causes and treatments of progressive MS. The Alliance has thus far awarded 33 grants to MS researchers and developed a global MS research portfolio to understand where research is most needed. “One thing I like about the NOW campaign,” says Lisa Sailor, a mother of three diagnosed with MS in 1993, “is that it helps people like me who live with a progressive form of MS. It’s exciting to live in this time because I think we will soon see some major breakthroughs in MS research. There’s hope on the horizon and that in itself is huge.”
LASTING IMPACT
Make a lasting impact and celebrate our achievements over the last five years by helping us reach the $250 million NOW Campaign goal by December 31, 2015, to accelerate breakthroughs that will change lives and end MS forever. • Make a NOW gift today • Share your story on the impact that MS research has had on your own life • Ask friends, family, coworkers and other members of your community to give Together, we can stop progression of MS, restore lost function and end MS forever. SPECIAL CONGRATULATIONS We are happy to announce that two special individuals from Virginia - West Virginia were selected to receive awards at the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s 2015 National Leadership Conference held this past November in Texas. Rick Powell received the Lifetime Achievement Award for over 30 years of service in helping with Bike MS and Brian Mason received the Funding the Mission Award for his substantial support to Walk MS and Bike MS. Congratulations Rick Powell and Brian Mason!
LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT HONOREE: RICK POWELL
VOLUNTEER HALL OF FAME-FUNDING THE MISSION: BRIAN MASON
When Rick Powell (from Norfolk, VA) was first diagnosed with MS over 30 years ago he stopped by the Society office to get involved and connect with other people living with MS. An avid cyclist, he had heard about an event called Bike MS being conducted in other parts of the country and worked diligently to get Bike MS started in his area. Rick continues to serve on the Bike MS Committee and regularly volunteers in the office. Rick recently began taking speaking engagements on behalf of the Society, including service club meetings, and high school assemblies. Rick’s knowledge of the disease, how it can progress and the important research in the pipeline makes him the perfect ambassador. You’ll find him at Society events telling people about living with MS and exciting advances in research.
Brian Mason (from Floyd, VA) got involved with the Society in 1999 after the son of one of his employees was diagnosed with MS. His company, Atlantic Bay Mortgage Group (ABMG) provides substantial financial support to the Society in Virginia and West Virginia, including Walk MS and Bike MS. Brian currently serves on the Virginia-West Virginia Board of Trustees and was formerly Board Chairman. In 2005, Brian was the recipient of the Norman Cohn Hope Award. Brian has also contributed generously personally donating a significant amount of money to support educational and connections program for people with MS, this includes Weekend Escape: The Brian Mason Respite Camp-an opportunity for families affected by MS to enjoy time together in a safe relaxing environment. Brian encourages ABMG staff to volunteer at the camp, Walk MS, Bike MS events, as well as coordinates service projects like raking leaves for people with MS.

RESEARCH
A GLOBAL EFFORT The International Progressive MS Alliance, an initiative connecting resources and experts around the world to end progressive multiple sclerosis, has awarded 11 collaborative network planning grants to MS researchers. Last year the Alliance funded 22 projects, all part of an ambitious program that will cumulatively invest nearly $25 million over the next five years in progressive MS research. “The global commitment to collaboratively addressing—and overcoming—the barriers to developing solutions in progressive MS is inspiring the entire world to do more,” says Cynthia Zagieboylo, Chair of the Alliance Executive Committee and CEO of the National MS Society.
FOCUS ON SOLUTIONS
The one-year planning awards launch a focused program to accelerate research progress in three key areas: 1) Develop better and more effective therapies for progressive MS; 2) Develop more meaningful ways to measure progression and monitor treatment effectiveness; and 3) Initiate clinical trials for new interventions. Each project selected for funding addresses one of these priority areas and will be directed by some of the world’s most prominent thought leaders and MS scientists.
Current projects selected for support include the development of: a treatment-discovery pipeline for secondary-progressive MS, an MRI biomarker for disability progression for use in clinical trials, novel molecular imaging probes to predict disability progression and evaluate therapies, and a multicenter project on cognitive rehabilitation and exercise. Project awardees will have the opportunity to apply for a full, four-year Collaborative Network award at the conclusion of the 12-month planning grant. “Not only has worldwide attention to progressive MS increased, but progress toward solutions that will change the world for people with progressive MS is accelerating,” noted Dr. Alan Thompson, Chair of the Alliance’s Scientific Steering Committee and Dean of University College London Faculty of Brain Sciences. Visit www.ProgressiveMSAlliance.org for more information. Learn about progressive MS at www.nationalMSsociety.org/progressiveMS.

MS CONNECTION: WINTER 2015-2016
LIVING WITH MS
RELATIONSHIPS AND MS The National MS Society recently sat down with psychologist Dr. Peggy Crawford to discuss relationships and multiple sclerosis. Dr. Crawford has worked with people with MS and their families for 25 years. She was a staff member of the Mellen Center for Research and Treatment of MS at the Cleveland Clinic and then a faculty member of the Department of Neurology at the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Crawford is also involved with the Society, serving as a presenter, consultant and committee member, and is a program staff member at CAN DO MS.
WHAT’S THE GREATEST CHALLENGE THAT COUPLES LIVING WITH MS FACE WHEN IT COMES TO INTIMACY?
I think that the primary challenge is communication. When people aren’t talking to each other, they can make a lot of assumptions about what the other person is thinking or feeling. This can become a major obstacle that impacts physical, emotional, and sexual intimacy. Sometimes issues have to do with how people are communicating. Couples also express themselves to each other through body language and actions. These can include spending less time with each other or negative facial expressions. Nonverbal communication can make you feel like you’re not communicating much, when in fact you are communicating a lot.
RELATIONSHIPS NEED CARE AND ATTENTION.
DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR OVERCOMING COMMUNICATION BARRIERS?
One of the things people can do is clarify why there isn’t more or better communication. I’ve worked with couples where the support partner avoids talking about changes in their relationship that are due to MS because the person with MS may become distressed. Sometimes it takes professional assistance to get that communication up and going again. It can also be helpful for people to share any assumptions that they’ve made about why they are not communicating and why they are not intimate. I remember a couple who had been married almost 30 years who came to see me.
NATIONALMSSOCIETY.ORG | 1-800-344-4867
It was clear that they cared about each other, but they hadn’t been physically intimate for years. I asked each of them why they thought they weren’t intimate. And would they like to be intimate again? “Absolutely,” both of them said. It turned out that each of them were very sure why they were not initiating intimacy. The woman, who had MS, said, “It’s because I’m sure he is no longer attracted to me. I’ve had to take steroids that have caused me to gain weight. I don’t initiate intimacy because I just don’t think it’s going to work. I just don’t think he is going to want to have sex.” The man said, “I don’t even hug and kiss you anymore because I’m so worried that is going to lead to sex, and I know you get those spasms in your legs, and your legs are stiff, and then it hurts you, and the last thing I want to do is cause you pain.” They went from being tearful to laughing and saying, “Can you believe this? All the kids are out of the house. This is our perfect opportunity in life to be intimate as often as we want.” They had never discussed the issue with each other.
WHAT OTHER BARRIERS MAY BE GETTING IN THE WAY?
Another barrier is not having accurate or enough information about MS. Many times people don’t even realize sexual symptoms may be related to their MS. And sometimes even healthcare professionals are embarrassed to bring it up. (To learn more, visit www.nationalMSsociety.org/ intimacy.)
17 Sometimes couples just have very different coping and communication styles. Some people want to know everything about MS. Other people would rather not know all the details. Some people cope by talking about things out loud. Other people are more the silent types. These are characteristics that couples bring to MS, not characteristics that MS brings to couples. So, if you already have differences, MS doesn’t necessarily make them better. On the other hand, some couples say that MS was the kick in the butt they needed to address their communication and relationship issues. I think sometimes we assume that everybody somehow should have learned how to communicate growing up, or that all people in committed relationships know how. Relationships need care and attention – they need to be a priority. Start by turning off the television and phone, making eye contact, summarizing what you think the person just said to you. Practice using “I” statements: “I feel sad.” “I feel frustrated when such and such happens.” The bottom line is that communication takes practice. Originally published on www.MSconnection. org/blog. WAYS TO GIVE
TAKING A BITE OUT OF MS If an apple a day keeps the doctor away, then Dave Flannery is hoping that his annual apple orchard event can do the same where multiple sclerosis is concerned. The owner of Apple Holler Family Farm and Restaurant in Sturtevant, Wisconsin, Flannery has three very personal reasons to hold out that hope: his sisters Sheila, Peggy and Jan, each of whom was diagnosed with MS. “I almost feel guilty that it affected them and not the boys in the family,” Flannery says. “It just isn’t fair.”
THE FAMILY TREE
All eight of the Flannery children—five irls and three boys—grew up near their grandpa’s farm in Wisconsin. “We did all the crazy things kids do on a farm, like getting on young cows and pretending to be in a rodeo,” says Flannery, who is the oldest sibling. The first MS diagnosis came in the 1980s: Peggy, who was just 18. Flannery remembered that MS affected her balance and she had trouble swallowing. That difficulty was a contributing factor when she passed away at the age of 48. His sister Jan, diagnosed after Peggy, had vision problems as a child that also affected her as an adult; Jan passed away at age 61. The third sister, Sheila, had polio as a child and finds that MS affects her mobility. She falls a lot, uses a cane or a walker, and sometimes a

Though she struggles with her MS every day, Sheila keeps an optimistic spirit. “None of them felt sorry for themselves,” Flannery remembers. “I told Sheila recently, ‘You’re a tough nut.’” Still, Flannery couldn’t help but wonder why MS affected so many in his family.
BRANCHING OUT FOR ANSWERS
Flannery reached out to the National MS Society to find answers to his questions about the disease. He learned that genetics are one of the many pieces to solving the MS puzzle and that MS researchers are starting to make definitive progress in a number of areas. That’s also when Flannery realized there was something he and his family could do that would have an impact. They could raise money to support MS research, as well as programs that helped people living with the disease. And he knew the perfect place to do it—Apple Holler. “There’s nothing that tastes as good as an apple fresh off the tree,” says Flannery, who bought the restaurant in 1987, then bought land in the 1990s. Today he has 30,000 fruit trees, including apples, peaches and pears, on 73 acres. Each autumn, cars line up filled with people eager to help feed goats, admire pumpkins, find their way through a corn maze and pick apples—lots and lots of apples.
THE FRUIT OF THEIR SUCCESS
That’s where the annual Apple Holler MS Orchard Walk & Fundraiser comes in. For a $20-per-person donation, attendees enjoy a one-mile walk through the orchard, a bag of apples (which they can pick themselves during the walk), a T-shirt, a raffle ticket and an applepancake breakfast. Those who prefer not to walk or are unable to can take a tractor-drawn wagon ride through the orchard. “Applepicking is a low-tech activity that people of all ages can enjoy,” Flannery explains. Since 2004, the annual Do-It-Yourself event has raised more than $85,000 for MS research and programs, and has also generated significant awareness about MS. In fact,

CENTER FRONT: MOM JEAN. it has been through organizing the event that Flannery and Apple Holler staff have come to realize just how many people have a connection to MS. “It seems like everyone knows someone or has a family member who has MS,” says Sheri Gavin, a fundraising coordinator for Apple Holler. “If we can help fund a resource for someone living with MS, even if it’s someone to call for information, it’s a good feeling,” says Flannery. “And in some small way we’re also contributing to a cure. I think that’s everyone’s hope, isn’t it?” Learn how to organize your own Do-It-Yourself MS fundraiser at www.DIYMS.org. Originally published in Wisconsin’s MS Connection newsletter. it www. tips and

WELLNESS STRATEGIES FOR PEOPLE WITH MS AND THEIR SUPPORT PARTNERS MARCH 12TH, 2016 RICHMOND, VA The Society is partnering with Sheltering Arms Physical Rehabilitation Centers to deliver a wellness program to benefit people living with MS and their support partners. Spouses, care partners, and friends are encouraged to attend. The program provides an overview of MS from a physician’s perspective, and also focuses on the techniques in rehab therapy that will help support partners and family members expand their own understanding of MS and actively participate in identifying the skills, strategies and tools needed to live fully with MS together.
EVERYDAY MATTERS MARCH 19TH, 2016 CHARLESTON, WV Everyone has their own idea of their best life. For people living with multiple sclerosis, the idea of that “best life” can change due to the challenges of having a chronic, unpredictable and lifelong disease. The meeting is about laying the groundwork with a discussion of the findings and tenets of positive psychology— the why. And also to dive deeper into the principles themselves—the how—when group members share how they are or will apply the principles to live their best life with MS.

Greg Bishop: In 2015 we approached Greg to become Chair the Board of Trustees during a tough time for the Society. Without hesitation, Greg said, I’ll do whatever you need me to do to help out. Greg has agreed to continue his chairmanship for another year. We are grateful for Greg, his passion, his leadership, and his wisdom not only as the chairman of the board, but his vision to inspire and grow the Williams Mullen Bike MS team. Glen Pierce: Glen has been participating in our Chapter’s Bike MS: Virginia’s Ocean to Bay Ride as the team captain of Pedalin’ with GP since 2008 and he has been a top fundraiser each of those eight years. He serves on the Bike MS Committee and is the chair of our local Leadership Council. Glen Pierce joined the Chapter’s Board of Trustees in 2012 because he is committed to do something about MS now. Brian Mason: Brian C. Mason is the former chairman and current member of the Board of Trustees for the Chapter. He is Chief Operating Officer and Partner with Atlantic Bay Mortgage Group. Brian has been associated with the Society since 1999 and has served on the Board since 2006. Since 2002, Mr. Mason has underwritten the costs of “Weekend Escape” to the tune of $20,000 annually. Because of his generosity, the weekend has been renamed, “Weekend Escape: The Brian Mason Respite Camp.” Steve Fowler: Steve Fowler has served as a leader on the board for the past 5 years. He has led a Bike MS: Country Roads Ride team for the past 9 years and this year his team raised nearly $25,000
Herb Hood: Herb Hood has volunteered at 3 of our Bike MS events in 2015. Herb has served as the SAG (Support and Gear) Coordinator for the Bike MS: Virginia’s Ocean to Bay Ride since 2012. When Herb joined the Bike MS Committee in 2012, he did a much needed overhaul of the SAG program and efficiently organized the way things were done. Katina Holloway: Katina exemplifies outstanding commitment to the Society’s mission and to people with MS through her volunteer activities. Katina has been an integral part of Society events in both Virginia and West Virginia for years, and this year she really stepped up to make a difference. Mike Workman and Terry Taylor: Mike and Terry rarely miss a Society event, even traveling many hours to help set up. This year alone, they volunteered at 3 Walk MS events and spent 3 days at the Bike MS: Country Roads Ride. When they are volunteering, you know you have people that will take charge and will wear any hat that you need them to wear. Mike’s family has been deeply touched by MS and both of them have devoted much of their time and resources to helping fuel our mission to find a cure.

with Steve raising over $10,000 personally. Steve has spearheaded several community fundraising events, such as a Golf Scramble and Art Auction and Wine and Craft Beer tasting that collectively raised nearly $12,000 for the Society. Steve also participates in the WV State Action Day and helped successfully advocated for the passage of several key items this year.
MAKE YOUR MARK AWARDS: Matt Austin: In the beginning of 2015 the Central & Eastern Virginia and Blue Ridge Chapters joined to become the Virginia – West Virginia Chapter. Prior to the completion of the realignment an extensive financial diligence process needed to take place and Matt Austin stepped up to that task. Matt worked diligently to create a complex realignment budget pro-forma to present to the home office. Matt not only is the Chair of the Richmond Area Leadership Council and but he is also an active member the Finance Committee. Katie Collett: Katie is the morning and midday anchor for WAVY-10 News and during MS Awareness Week, Katie rallied her team at the station to wear orange during the morning and midday broadcast and filmed a segment on living with MS, all to help bring awareness to our mission. Katie has also served as our Mistress of Ceremonies for the Women on the Move Luncheon in Virginia Beach for two years and courageously moves the crowd with her personal story of living with MS. Damian Ferek: Damian has played a vital role in the work of the Society for such a long time that he has become synonymous with this organization. He has, without hesitation, donated his time, energy, business and personal resources, employees, and his connections to help create awareness and bring in funds. Damian creates excitement in everything he does and he inspires those around him who get the opportunity to see him in action.
Frank & Yvonne Patton: Frank & Yvonne Patton have been active with the Society and the Lynchburg community for years. Both Frank and Yvonne have been diagnosed with MS, however, they have used their positivity and cheerful personalities to inspire others. Longtime members of a Support Group in Lynchburg that had slowed down meeting, Yvonne and Frank spearheaded an effort in collaboration with other civic leaders in the Lynchburg area to revive the once flourishing Support Group. Kendrick Williams: Kendrick Williams has made it his mission to support local area events that are helping us make an impact in the lives of people living with MS. Kendrick’s determination in helping those with MS live their best lives is present in Kendrick’s advocacy work across the region, in his leading the 2016 On the Move Luncheon as this year’s Chair, and by serving as a member of the Hampton Roads Leadership Council, helping to strategically drive our mission in the local area. Kendrick has led the Peninsula Evening Support Group for several years and has also been the catalyst for our continued partnership with TowneBank.
ADVOCATE OF THE YEAR AWARDS Marques Jones: Marques Jones is the Chair of our Virginia Government Relations Committee this year, meeting one-on-one with his legislators and sharing his powerful story and participating in our state and federal advocacy events. This year, Marques is also leading the charge in the Richmond area and working with our coalition partners to expand Medicaid and increase access to care for thousands of Virginians! His leadership and inquisitive enthusiasm is inspirational for other MS Activists. Suzanne O’Connell: Suzanne is the Vice Chair of the state wide government relations committee (GRC) and has long attended Virginia State Action Day.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
FLOYD FIELDS BY TAMMY ROSE, FLOYD FIELDS’ DAUGHTER AND NATIONAL MS SOCIETY VOLUNTEER
Floyd has always had a servant’s heart for giving and helping others. Though his business, Floyd’s Tire & Auto, focuses on fixing cars, he’s well-known in the community for the hearts and lives that he fixes; thus, his shop is affectionately referred to as “Floyd’s Rehab Center.” Whether he’s supporting family members to achieve their goals, talking with customers to brighten up their day, or getting on his riding lawn mower to clear a neighbor’s overgrown brush, Floyd never passes on an opportunity to care for others. He strongly believes in helping those who are unable to help themselves and he has raised his children and grandchildren to value service as well. In 2006, his daughter Yolanda rode her bike in Bike MS event from Richmond to Williamsburg. Once he saw how the bikers were able to help out [funding the mission], Floyd, an ardent motorcyclist, decided he would like to work with this nonprofit as well.
IN TRUE FLOYD FASHION, WHEN HE SEES A NEED, HE MEETS IT AND HE HAS EVEN CALLED ON FAMILY, FRIENDS, AND VA STATE TROOPERS TO AID IN THE [BIKE MS] EVENT. Since 2007, Floyd has enjoyed coordinating the transportation during the events. However, he does not volunteer alone. In true Floyd fashion, when he sees a need, he meets it and he has even called on family, friends, and VA state troopers to aid in the event. With his gentle soul and contagious laugh, he makes it nearly impossible for anyone to turn him down and thus he has shared the joy of spreading awareness with so many. In fact, as a member of the Tru-Colors Motorcycle Club, Floyd has been successful in getting his friends to volunteer annually. He has been a great role model for so many. He encourages his friends to live a life of service to others and pay it forward.
