A Letter From The Chair Of The Board In 2009, the Gateway Area Chapter of the National MS Society moved boldly toward a world free of MS. Through quality services for the 6,300 people in our area living with MS, increased funding for research, and renewed advocacy efforts, the Chapter continued to be a leader in the movement. Our 2009 signature events, Walk MS, Challenge Walk MS and Bike MS demonstrated everyone’s dedication despite a struggling economy. A record number of cyclists converged at a new location for Bike MS. Challenge Walk MS saw renewed energy and hope at its new location, and Walk MS continues to be a sea of orange as everyone comes out for one common goal — a world free of MS. To keep moving in our positive direction in 2010, despite what difficult times may still lie ahead, we need your help more than ever. Please join the nearly 1,500 volunteers who have joined the movement who contribute to our success, and help end MS that much sooner. Whether you are a walker, a cyclist, a doctor, a person living with MS, a business man or woman, or a loved one of someone living with MS, we can use your help. We are a driving force of MS research, relentlessly pursuing prevention, treatment, and a
cure. As part of our John L. Trotter Program we heard the positive news of nervous system repair research that holds so much promise for the future. For those living with MS, a cure can’t come soon enough, so we need to continue to move together — faster. Whether you join the movement with us by volunteering, raising money, or by helping us raise awareness of multiple sclerosis, we can all make a difference. With the expiration of my term as Chair, the Board of Directors voted unanimously to appoint Lynda Baris to a two-year term as Chair. Lynda is a long-time volunteer and board member who has shown exceptional dedication and proven leadership. It’s my pleasure to welcome Lynda, and I have the utmost confidence that the Chapter is in excellent hands. Please join our movement by calling 1-800-344-4867 today or going to www.gatewaymssociety.org Moving It For A Cure,
Helmut Starr Chair of the Board of Trustees

About MS
Multiple sclerosis interrupts the flow of information from the brain to the body and stops people from moving. Every hour in the United States, someone is newly diagnosed with MS, an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are moving us closer to a world free of MS.
If You or Someone You Know Has MS:
Studies show that early and ongoing treatment with an FDA-approved therapy can reduce future disease activity and improve quality of life for many people with multiple sclerosis. The National MS Society’s medical advisors recommend that people with MS talk with their health-care professional about using one of these medications and about strategies and effective treatments to manage symptoms. The National MS Society is committed to ensuring that people with MS have the information and quality care they need to live healthy, productive and independent lives. If you or someone you know has MS, please contact the National Multiple Sclerosis Society today at www.nationalmssociety.org or 1-800-344-4867 to learn about ways to help manage multiple sclerosis and about current research that may one day reveal a cure.
