MS stops people from moving. We exist to make sure it doesn’t. National Multiple Sclerosis Society Founded in 1946, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society has affiliated Chapters serving each of the 50 states including Wisconsin, all striving to address the challenges of living with MS. Research is at the forefront of these initiatives, and thanks to the generosity of volunteers, donors and fundraisers, the Society is funding more MS research, providing more services to people with MS, offering more professional education and furthering more advocacy efforts than any other nonprofit MS organization in the world.
MS in Wisconsin More than 10,000 children, women and men in Wisconsin have been diagnosed with MS, giving the state what is believed to be one of the higher prevalence rates in the nation. Headquartered in Hartland, the Wisconsin Chapter proudly serves those individuals as well as those who love and care for them.
We have a very clear view of who we are, what we do and what we value. We are people who want to do something about MS now. We mobilize people and resources to drive research for a cure and address the challenges of everyone affected by MS. And as an organization whose vision is to create a world free of MS, we strive to live by a set of core values that guide our work and actions on a daily basis:

We share them, along with highlights from the year, so you can be sure that your support and assistance have been well placed. That’s because none of what has been accomplished since Sylvia Lawry started the Society in 1946 has been done without the support of volunteers, donors and fundraisers – friends like you who believe wholeheartedly in what we will accomplish together. Quality of Life Those familiar with the Wisconsin Chapter are likely also familiar with Wendy Machi and the network of family and friends who have supported her since her MS diagnosis in 1983. Her namesake, Team Wendy, is a cornerstone of Bike MS: TOYOTA Best Dam Bike Ride, with her husband, children, other family members and friends taking turns riding tandem with her. Team Wendy organizes numerous “Do It Yourself” fundraising events each year to support quality-of-life programs and services offered by the Chapter as well as critical research into treating and curing MS. The team’s Blarney Bash is one of those events: an evening of music, raffles, silent auctions, food and fun. In 2012 – its 10th anniversary year – Blarney Bash raised nearly $25,000. “Each year the Blarney Bash is held to raise money and awareness to help fight and find a cure for the debilitating disease that is multiple sclerosis. We do it for people like Auntie Wendy, who continue to fight each day to complete everyday activities that we all take for granted,” said Ashley Gorski, Blarney Bash coordinator and member of Team Wendy. “Together, there is always hope for a cure.”

Leadership
In 2012, experts described MS-related research as “breathtaking,” “exploding” and “the most dramatic ... in all of neurology, and perhaps all of medicine, for the last 15 years.” More than 325 projects were funded through donations to the National MS Society, including eight in Wisconsin. In July, $18.4 million was committed to support 52 new projects and fellowships, including a nearly half-million dollar grant to Bonnie Dittel, Ph.D., a senior investigator at BloodCenter of Wisconsin, Blood Research Institute of Milwaukee who focuses on immune system regulation as it relates to MS.

Through creativity and hard work, we accelerate the pace of scientific discovery, promote quality health care, stimulate community resources and services, advocate for favorable government policies, and are the world’s best source of information about multiple sclerosis.”
Dr. Dittel is studying the effects of a molecule that signals the immune system in an animal disease that is similar to MS. Previous work showed that mice with low levels of the molecule had a more severe form of the disease than mice with normal levels. With the new grant, Dr. Dittel is investigating the role the molecule plays in suppressing the cell activity that damages myelin. That research will lead to a better understanding of how immune system activity in the brain is controlled, and could provide clues for new ways to treat MS.

Scholarships The compounding cost of medical care and lost wages can leave little room to afford college tuition for families touched by MS. The National MS Society’s scholarship program was created to offset those expenses, awarding $44,000 to 27 Wisconsin students in 2012 alone. The Ladish Company Foundation, the charitable arm of one of Milwaukee’s oldest and most well-respected industrial manufacturers, went above and beyond its 20-year, $200,000-plus giving history with the Society by committing in 2012 to fund four renewable four-year scholarships, each valued at $5,000 annually. Brianna Laack was the first Wisconsin scholar to receive The Ladish Company Foundation MS Scholarship and is using it to help pay for her undergraduate degree at UW-La Crosse. A different student will be selected by the Scholarship Committee each year to receive a four-year scholarship. “Funding from donors like the Ladish Company Foundation fuels our MS Scholarship Program,“ commented Jane Jacobson, member of both the Wisconsin Chapter and National MS Society Scholarship Committees. “We are so grateful for all the continued generosity that supports it and recognizes the Chapter’s ability to be a good steward of the resources entrusted to it.” B rianna Laack and her mom, Lynne. Laack was the first Wisconsin scholar to receive a new renewable scholarship provided by The Ladish Company Foundation.

Achieving Goals Together Challenge Walk MS is about setting high expectations and achieving them, and the fifth annual event in 2012 was no exception. It drew more than 220 participants from 16 states who together exceeded the $385,000 fundraising goal by an additional $55,000.
Excellence “ We set high standards of performance and service delivery, and work toward excellence in everything we do.”
Funds each year come both from walkers and Super Crew members, volunteers who raise the $1,500-perperson minimum and focus on the comfort and care of the walkers. The Sole Sisters team is a perfect example of that. Each year some members walk while others host a rest stop with a unique theme. They do so in honor of Tim Pagel who, since being diagnosed with MS in 2000, has given up a promising career in professional golf management along with many other activities he once enjoyed. By being part of Challenge Walk MS, he and his team are among others who have high expectations about the future of MS. Said Tim’s wife, Liza: “The money we raise will be used to continue current medical research and will help in the development of new medications and treatments.”

Supporting Each Other One of the best examples of those who help the National MS Society address the challenges of living with multiple sclerosis are self-help group leaders, trained facilitators who believe positive personal change can happen through individual effort with the support of others. There are more than 40 groups in Wisconsin, some with a specific focus (e.g. mothers who have MS), some that actively work to reach the newly diagnosed, and some that make a point to raise awareness and funds through Chapter events. The MASH (Madison Area Self-Help) MS Group, for instance, hosts a variety of speakers at its monthly meetings. Its leaders and members also are a mainstay at the Chapter’s annual Bike MS: TOYOTA Best Dam Bike Ride, where they spend the afternoon signing riders’ bibs after they cross the finish line in Madison. The tradition is a highlight of the weekend for many riders as a oneon-one reminder of what they raised money and biked hundreds of miles for.

Chapter Highlights from 2012 The MS Research NOW speaker series reached more than 350 individuals affected by MS in Wisconsin. Events were held in Wausau, Janesville, Milwaukee, Green Bay and Madison and featured Colleen Hayes, Ph.D., Randall Schapiro, M.D. and Aaron Field, M.D., Ph.D. Two new self-help groups were added in Wisconsin, increasing the total to 40. A one-day conference was held at the Wisconsin Chapter headquarters to help facilitators plan for their group meetings for the following year. “First touch� connections were made with more than 220 individuals who were newly diagnosed with MS or newly disclosed. Chapter representatives made more than 70 visits to MS clinics throughout the year to provide information and answer questions for those diagnosed with MS. MS College Scholarships totaling $44,000 were awarded to 27 Wisconsin students, including one diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and another who was recognized nationally as a Top Scholar. More than $87,000 was provided in financial assistance to 144 individuals to help them afford wheel chairs or wheel chair accessories, in-home therapy, respite care, the installation of modifications to make homes and automobiles accessible, and more.

The fifth annual Challenge Walk MS was a record-setting success, drawing more than 220 participants and raising nearly $440,000, well above the $385,000 goal.
MS Camp Scholarships were provided to 15 children from families affected by MS, allowing them to attend the accredited Wisconsin summer camp of their choice for up to one week. Monthly hour-long teleconferences were held on topics including spasticity, bowel and bladder issues, and eating healthy and maximizing physical therapy specific to MS. The educational sessions were provided for free and available for people to listen to from home. The Wisconsin Chapter joined with other regional chapters to establish the Midwest Lending Library, a way of providing free access to accurate, current and comprehensive information to people with MS, those who care for them and health professionals. The library offers books, DVDs and CDs for free on a variety of MSrelated topics such as symptoms, management, emotional health, exercise and family support. More than 475 people touched by MS heard from keynote speakers Dr. Loren Rolak, Amy Rowell and Kelly Malucha at the MS Summit in the Wisconsin Dells.

On the Move Luncheons gave those who have MS and their family members, friends and colleagues the opportunity to hear from Wisconsin’s own Dr. John Fleming, whose probiotic worm egg study is making headlines around the world for its positive initial findings. The Chapter worked with Dr. Alexander Ng in holding a free half-day dance lesson for those with MS. It was designed to promote the benefits of dance-related exercise as related to stability, balance and mobility for those with MS. Some of those who attended hadn’t danced in years. The free MS Connection magazine included features on financial planning specific to those with MS, adaptive hunting, local research studies and care facilities, and legal insight into Social Security Disability Insurance and was mailed to more than 30,000 households each quarter. More than 1,500 letters and emails reached Wisconsin state representatives and senators in Madison on World MS Day, thanking them for their support of programs that help those affected by MS and urging them to do so in the future.

Wisconsin’s Centers for Comprehensive MS Care The Wisconsin Chapter’s Affiliated Centers for Comprehensive MS Care meet specific criteria established by the National MS Society for treating those who have been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, and have a demonstrated partnership and strong collaboration with the Society. The collaboration focuses on the patient experience and requires an extraordinary commitment to a range of services that address the broad spectrum of needs in maximizing health, independence and quality of life for those with MS. Partners in MS Care Partners in MS Care is another designation in recognition and support of quality MS care across many types of health disciplines. Consideration is given based on MS experience, demonstrated MS knowledge and involvement in the MS community and National MS Society activities. In 2012 two facilities in Wisconsin became the first in the state to receive this new designation: Dean Neurological Institute and Spine Center in Madison and Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse.
