Budget hitch delays campus-wide WiFi

Students longed for free WiFi access in the campus, as trailed by the school's Supreme Secondary Learner Government (SSLG) on their Facebook post earlier this school year.

According to Vladimir Miñoza, SSLG President, students are currently unable to utilize the free WiFi as the system cannot accommodate 4,468 students simultaneously. Consequently, access to free WiFi is presently limited for very few users.

Happy’ campaign aids underprivileged, calamity-stricken students

In collaboration with the Supreme Secondary Learner Nabunturan National Comprehensive High School (NNCHS) continued the second phase of ‘Project Happy’ last February 23, this year, in a bid to address financial challenges hindering students from meeting their basic school needs, as well as those affected by calamities.

Sir Sandy G. Yee, NNCHS School Principal IV, identified financial difficulties as a primary reason for student dropouts. To counter this issue, he championed a program aimed at assisting students facing monetary challenges in pursuing their education and supporting the aspirations of underprivileged children.

The program, facilitated in collaboration with sponsors, provided essential items like lunch boxes, water bottles, and health kits to students. “A portion of what they have, they are willing to give away,” Yee underscored.

Julieta Tusay, Nabunturan Integrated Cooperative Chief Finance Officer and Project Happy sponsor, highlighted the cooperative’s role in instilling the habit of saving among students. “We are here to teach students of this school the habit of saving,” Tusay stated.

The Project Happy launched on November 7, 2023, designed to propagate love and peace through education, ensuring that no student is left behind in their quest for knowledge.

The SSLG budget is currently facing challenges, impacting the implementation of the free WiFi initiative. However, Miñoza remains optimistic. "In the fourth quarter, I believe the budget will be fully funded because our PTA has several funding sources," Miñoza assured.

Despite current limitations, the school administration is actively working towards ensuring that students benefit from free WiFi access. The initiative remains on track, and students can anticipate improved access to free WiFi in the near future.

Students, vendors fret over hygiene, cost issues

Action to ban single-use plastics within the school premises has stirred mixed reactions among students and vendors.

Greg Atacador, canteen vendor, shared challenges she faced during the adjustment period. "We had to make intense adjustments because finding a replacement for single-use plastics was tough. Recyclable plastic, though a better alternative, is also more expensive," Atacador explained.

Zanya Tan, a Grade 8 student, pointed out that banning singleuse plastics could have positive effects in reducing trash and benefiting the environment. However, she also expressed concerns about the hygiene of utensils provided by some canteen stalls. "It seems not very hygienic, not that the canteen vendors cannot wash [utensils], but it cannot be avoided," Tan noted.

Additionally, Tan highlighted a potential negative impact, stating that without single-use plastics, students might need to purchase

The School Head's decision to ban singleuse plastics, as part of an initiative to minimize waste on campus, aims to reduce waste and decrease pollution within the school. The move aligns with the promotion of sustainable solutions to address waste, chemical, and climate change issues.

Compre OKs local college approval

Local council of Nabunturan has approved the legislation in its third and final reading to establish the first local college in the municipality to be called, ‘Colegio de Nabunturan.’ The impending inauguration of the college promises opportunities for Nabunturanon students to pursue affordable and quality education in the locality.

ICT Coor warns: Sharing X-rated media punishable by law

Inappropriate sharing of an explicit video on social media platforms has sparked controversy within the school community, and school authorities are now grappling with the aftermath, working to address the situation and reinforce the values of dignity and respect.

Sir Japerson Bacus, School’s ICT Coordinator, highlighted the importance of making students aware that engaging in such content can lead to arrests. “Whenever we’re in class, I always remind my students about this matter,” Bacus pointed out, “they must constantly think of the consequences it would bring from misbehaving online.” Likewise, educators emphasize setting clear boundaries, practicing digital etiquette, and regularly evaluating online activities to empower students to harness the benefits of technology while minimizing its problems.

School: Consequences loom for vaping violators

School disciplinarians and health personnels underscored the urgent need to address vaping issues amidst the skyrocketing number of incidents within the school community. The commitment to reinforcing policies and promoting healthier alternatives reflects the school’s dedication to fostering a safe and conducive learning environment for all students.

Arts & Design Track students to perform at ‘Bulawanong

Students from the Arts and Design Track will showcase their talents in the upcoming Bulawan Festival’s ‘Bulawanong Konsiyertulong,’ a concert-for-a-cause organized to support floodaffected victims of Davao de Oro.

The concert will feature performances from participating artists who will serenade and entertain people within and outside the province. “All proceeds from the concert will go towards providing recovery efforts for the victims affected by flooding and landslide,” informed Lara Zaphire Kristy Bermejo, Provincial Human Resource Management and Development Officer.

Krianne Aparicio, lead singer and Music Arts student, is thrilled to be part of a meaningful cause. “The opportunity to perform for the victims fills us with excitement and a sense of purpose,” Aparicio exclaimed, “We’ve been rehearsing tirelessly, and we can’t wait to share our performances with the community and hopefully bring some joy and comfort to those who need it most.”

Bulawanong KonsiyerTulong is a call-to-action project of the Provincial Employees Union of Compostela Valley (PEUCV) - Davao de Oro, in partnership with the Provincial Government of Davao de Oro. The event is scheduled to take place on March 7th at the Provincial Capitol, Nabunturan.

Disaster Coor urges vigilance: Practice ‘Duck-Cover-Hold’

CEMENTING DUCK-COVER-HOLD PRACTICE

Following a series of earthquakes that have rattled Davao Region over the past few months, students and teachers find themselves on edge as the tremors take a toll on school buildings and classrooms.

Ian Melendres, the School Disaster Risk Reduction Management (SDRRM) Coordinator and Head Teacher of Filipino Department, expressed concern over a very few students actively practicing the ‘Duck, Cover, and Hold’ protocol during earthquakes. “Some of us tend to forget to apply Duck- Cover-Hold because of the panic, but it is

essential to instill this practice whenever earthquake occurs, to ensure the safety of all,” he noted.

CONCERNING STATUS OF SCHOOL BUILDINGS

Melendres acknowledged that certain structures have developed minor cracks, prompting ongoing inspections by the RDANA. Vigilant monitoring of other buildings is also underway to identify any potential earthquake-related damage.

Resilience is one of the qualities that DepEd wants to instill in our learners, that includes being able to adjust to sudden changes due to inevitable circumstances.

He countered the perception of the school’s buildings as old, asserting that all classes are still in use, indicating that the structures remain functional and are occupied by students. In the face of this seismic activity, the school is committed to maintaining the safety and well-being of its students and staff.

As the NNCHS community remains on alert, the implementation of safety measures becomes paramount in mitigating the impact of seismic events on school infrastructure and ensuring the welfare of its occupants.

ENGLISH PROFICIENCY DILEMMA

Amidst the improvement of the Philippines in the global ranking at 20th place in the English Proficiency Index, Nabunturan Nat’l Comprehensive High School failed to reach targeted English proficiency level of 75%.

Compre backs ‘gradual return’ to old school calendar

Students sighed relief as the next school year will begin on July 31, 2024, following several cases of dehydration and fatigue under the worsening climate change last year. By 2025, the school calendar will revert from June to March.

RSPC 2024 to feature knockout elims

Based on 2022-2023 Proficiency Level Report, NNCHS’s English proficiency stood at an average of 58%, a figure higher than the scores achieved in the Science and Math subjects. Flora May Villanueva, school’s Guidance Counselor, expressed the need for cautious interpretation of these statistics. “Even though our average proficiency in English increases, it does not reach our proficiency target. This highlights the need in enhancing English language skills among our students,” Villanueva remarked.

ERADICATING POOR COMPREHENSION

Department of Education has recently rolled out ‘Catchup Friday’ as an learning intervention to address students’ learning gaps.

With this initiative, Villanueva affirmed to be a step towards a right direction. “Interventions must meet where the students are at. Reading is the inception towards responsible citizenship,” Villanueva declared.

As the nation celebrates its overall climb in EP Index, NNCHS remains determined to enhance its students’ language skills.

Competition among campus journalists intensifies as knockout eliminations are introduced for the Individual Events in the upcoming Regional Schools Press Conference this March 2024. With three rounds of competition, only one journalist will emerge victorious as the representative for NSPC, slated to take place in Cebu City.

HOPING FOR KIND CONSIDERATION

Prioritizing safety in the face of adversities

Amidst the recent onslaught of heavy rains and relentless flooding in Davao de Oro last January, the well-being of our students hangs precariously in the balance. As the waters rise and landslides threaten, it is imperative that educators and authorities prioritize the safety of our youth above all else. In times of such calamities, empathy and understanding must be exercised, evaluating whether assigning homework to students grappling with the aftermath of natural disasters is truly appropriate.

Blended learning, touted as a flexible approach to education, is a step forward to the realities

of our unpredictable weather patterns. When orange rainfall warnings loom, as they frequently have in recent weeks, the prudent decision is to suspend academic tasks and focus solely on ensuring the safety and well-being of our students and their families.

In the wake of such catastrophic events, expecting students to maintain their academic commitments becomes an unreasonable burden. With homes flooded and communities ravaged, the ability to concentrate on homework tasks becomes an insurmountable challenge. It is unjust to expect the same level of productivity from students

grappling with the immediate aftermath of calamities as from those in more fortunate circumstances.

In the dire circumstances faced by students, there are instances where teachers persist in assigning homework without regard for the prevailing conditions. However, it is essential to acknowledge that some teachers may lack awareness of the extent of the situation or the impact it has on their students’ lives.

Nevertheless, this should not excuse the oversight. It is incumbent upon educators to demonstrate compassion and

flexibility during times of crisis, ensuring that the burden of academic expectations does not exacerbate the challenges faced by our students.

As a community, we must have the empathy for the students during times of crisis. It is an understatement that authorities, educators, and parents work collaboratively to prioritize the safety and well-being of our youth above all else.

Only through collective action and compassion can we weather the storm and emerge stronger as a community.

Hoping for a thoughtful consideration.

HUMAN ESSENCE

Slash the Strand Stereotyping

JUSTIN NIEN FEMENTIRA

The senior high school program of Department of Education has unveiled a plethora of educational options known as strands. Unfortunately, certain strands have fallen victim to unfair stigmatization and misconceptions. It is imperative

to cast a spotlight on the significance of embracing the diverse track choices in senior high and to challenge the misguided belief that strands associated with vocational or technical skills offer fewer options than their academicallyfocused counterparts.

According to Alexis Cento, a Grade 12 student and class president from the Electrical Installation and Maintenance (EIM) strand, their strand frequently faces discrimination. Unjustly perceived as lackadaisical students who habitually skip classes, the students in this strand encounter the misconception that their workload is less demanding. Contrary to these misconceptions, Cento emphasizes that being part of the EIM strand requires substantial skill and knowledge in fixing things.

Cento underscores the need for students to foster an inclusive and supportive environment that respects and values the choices made by their peers, irrespective of the strand they choose. Creating alternative pathways to success is not only beneficial but also imperative in accommodating the diverse strengths and interests of every student.

Strands, regardless of their nature, ought to be viewed as equal and valid choices.

In the grand scheme of the senior high school program, which aims to cater to individual needs, the emphasis is on recognizing and appreciating different strengths and interests. Students select a track and strand based on their skills and future college path, and mutual respect for these decisions is paramount. Encouraging learners to respect each other's choices, extend support, and cultivate a positive and inclusive learning environment is crucial for the collective success of all.

Furthermore, schools play a pivotal role in advocating for equality and respect for all students, regardless of their chosen strands. This approach not only fosters an environment where students can thrive and reach their full potential but also empowers them to pursue their passions and goals. By providing equal opportunities and respect, schools contribute to the holistic development of students in the senior high school program.

Going back to the crucial task of selecting Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) officers, the age-old dilemma persists – do we prioritize academic prowess or succumb to the allure of popularity?

The academic background versus popularity debate has been a recurrent theme since October 2023. Examining the merits of an academic background becomes paramount in this discourse.

Leadership in the SK is a multifaceted responsibility, encompassing crucial aspects such as education, health, gender, and community development. An academic background signifies a commitment to education, suggesting that a candidate excelling in their studies is more likely to excel in fulfilling their duties as an SK chairperson.

Student-voters must discern the most suitable and worthy leader for the youth.

The ideal SK candidate is one who combines responsibility and information literacy to successfully lead the entire barangay . However, the onus is not solely on the candidates; student-voters must also be information literate to discern the most suitable and worthy leader for the youth.

Public schools strive to provide students with the best learning environment, equipment, and facilities. The vital role in managing funds for these enhancements falls upon the Parent Teacher Association (PTA), which relies on contributions from parents and government allocations. Unfortunately, it is disheartening that some parents are unable to fulfill their PTA donations, creating a

significant gap in the much-needed funding.

Riamae Enfestan underscores the importance of these contributions, explaining that funds received from parents are allocated across various subject areas. Moreover, Enfestan points out that parents bear the responsibility if there is insufficient funding to support their children's education.

The allocation of funds depends on the contributions received, and in the absence of PTA payments, the balance remains at zero. This highlights a concerning oversight among certain parents who may not fully grasp the significance of their contributions to the PTA.

Recognizing that not all parents and students are financially stable, it is acknowledged that personal expenses may take precedence at times.

Parents play a pivotal role in ensuring the continued growth and development of the school.

Furthermore, it's crucial to dispel any concerns regarding the handling of funds by the school administration. However, the real struggle emerges when the PTA does not receive the necessary contributions, leading to insufficient funds for vital school activities.

Encouraging parents to actively participate in meeting their PTA obligations is not merely a financial necessity but a crucial step for the school. It is imperative to view these contributions not as an obligation but as an investment in the collective success and progress of the entire school community.

POINT OF VIEW

Nat’l Learning Camp: Approved

In the summer of 2023, DepEd’s National Learning Camp (NLC) unfolded as a transformative experience. The program catered to two distinct groups: Enhancement for academically proficient students and Consolidation for those seeking additional support.

The atmosphere fostered by the NLC was one of positivity and encouragement. Teachers not only imparted academic knowledge but also demonstrated exceptional patience and passion, handling misbehavior with a compassionate approach.

Beyond the structured lessons, students actively engaged in diverse activities that not only tested academic prowess but also cultivated essential life skills like social interaction and leadership.

From my perspective, the NLC was not just an academic program; it was a holistic journey that emphasized both academic growth and the development of crucial life skills. It stands as a testament to the power of education to transform not only academic abilities but also the overall character and outlook of students.

Restricting campus journalism to SPJ students runs the risk of stifling diversity. The primary objective of this journalistic endeavor is to articulate the issues and challenges faced by the school. The Philippines still drowned in the bottom 10 out of 81 countries in reading comprehension, mathematics and science results of the 2022 Program for International Student Assessment (PISA). Communities of NNCHS were asked by this question:

“Slow learner na ba ang mga bata?”

“Are children slow-learners nowadays?”

“No. They just lack focus because they have more things to do some activities other than school stuff. Plus they are bombarded with too much information other kids failed to quantify.”

Campus Journ is for everyone

The essence of campus journalism lies in its ability to cultivate awareness about the occurrences within school premises, develop essential life skills, enhance communication abilities, and forge connections that contribute to a sense of unity.

Inclusivity within campus journalism is not just desirable; it is crucial. It opens the floodgates to a plethora of ideas, perspectives, and opinions, enriching the content and creating a tapestry of thought.

The idea of making campus journalism inclusive not only broadens the spectrum of journalistic endeavors but also propels its purpose forward. Schools are encouraged to organize events where journalism students share their insights, teaching valuable skills like storytelling, accurate reporting, and effective research to foster a more inclusive journalistic culture.

SILVER STRIDES: MISAELA’S TIMELESS PURSUIT TO EDUCATION

In the serene landscapes of Mainit, Nabunturan, Davao de Oro, where the echo of mining tales lingers, a remarkable story unfolds. Misaela R. Manos, a 53-year-old resident, has embarked on a unique educational odyssey, challenging societal norms and proving that the pursuit of dreams knows no age limits. Misaela, a miner’s wife turned aspiring educator, is currently navigating the labyrinth of higher education, dispelling the notion that success is tethered to youth.

Misaela is a fourth year Education student at Davao de Oro State College, taking her Pre-Service Teaching at Nabunturan NCHS. Misaela’s pursuit at this stage of life traces back to a long-lost dream. Hindered by familial responsibilities after high school, her aspirations took a back seat as she became the breadwinner for her siblings and depressed mother. However, the embers of her educational passion never waned, sparking into flames in 2019 when she discovered the opportunity for free tertiary education. With her son’s encouragement, Misaela took the plunge, rekindling her academic journey.

Amidst her aspiration, Misaela confronted a formidable foe: a diagnosis of “Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma with Lymph node metastasis” during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Undeterred, she faced five operations and completed Radiation Therapy, all while adapting to the challenges of the pandemic-induced shift to online classes. Her resilience, coupled with the unwavering support of her instructors, propelled her forward.

Balancing academic pursuits with familial obligations necessitates effective time management, a skill Misaela has mastered. With meticulous planning and a supportive family, she effortlessly orchestrates the intricate dance between education and personal life. Her maturity as an older student brings unique advantages, as she understands the value of commitment and prioritizes her studies with unwavering dedication.

Dreams don’t age. As Misaela reflects on her journey, she takes pride in defying the odds. “Going back to school is not a privilege everyone has,” she shares. “I want my children and others to be inspired by my determination to overcome trials and obstacles to achieve our goals.” Her story becomes a beacon of hope, resonating with the universal truth that where there is a will, there is a way. In the end, Misaela R. Manos stands as living proof that success does not define how old you are—rather, it’s a testament to the indomitable spirit that propels individuals to soar against all odds.

freddy to fight! STRENGTH AND SPIRIT OF A SOPHOMORE STUDENT

LYCA ABARTE

We may not be the ones who choose to be born but life tests us the inevitability of hardships and impediments, and that has embodied by an eighth-grade student named Frederick Fadirugao. Frederick, who battles the challenges of Klippel-Feil syndrome, not only confronts the complexities of adolescence but also the added burden of relentless bullying due to his physical condition. His story sheds light on the harsh reality faced by many differently-abled individuals and underscores the indomitable spirit that can rise above adversity.

For Frederick, the hallways of his school became a battleground where taunts and jeers seemed to echo louder than laughter. KlippelFeil syndrome, a rare congenital disorder that fuses cervical vertebrae, made him a target for bullies. Despite the pain, both physical and emotional, Frederick bravely endured the daily onslaught. In his own words, he shares, “It’s always my insecurity having this disorder. I tried to endure from being bullied every single day. It’s never easy to be ridiculed.”

Wayne Hyacinth Singson, Teen Guidance Advocate, reflects on the harsh reality faced by differently-abled individuals like Frederick. “Bullying is still prominent nowadays, and Frederick is no exception to it. Despite his disorder, he always looks up, never fazed by how people look down at him.”

In the Philippines, Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) like Frederick are entitled to state benefits aimed at supporting their unique needs. These benefits encompass educational assistance, employment preferences, and accessibility accommodations. Understanding and implementing these provisions are crucial steps toward fostering an inclusive environment where no one feels marginalized or powerless.

As Frederick’s journey unfolds, it becomes a beacon of inspiration for others facing similar challenges. The power of determination, exemplified by Frederick’s unwavering spirit, proves that no bully can vanquish the resilience that resides within. His story serves as a poignant reminder that embracing differences and fostering empathy can pave the way for a more compassionate and understanding society—one where the strength of character triumphs over the shadows of ignorance and cruelty.

On the 25th day of December, as Filipinos come together to celebrate Christmas, another cinematic tradition unfolds across the nation—the premiere showing of films from the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF).

The Valley press seized the opportunity to experience these films firsthand, hot off the cinema reels. Split into four groups, each assigned to watch specific film, the team indulged in the diverse cinematic offerings. Subsequently, a collective gathering ensued where the team engaged in thoughtful discussions, dissecting and reviewing the movies we had just witnessed. In a culminating moment, each film earned a score on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 denoting the lowest and 10 signifying the highest appraisal.

After eight years of childless marriage, Clark and Eileen’s lives take an unexpected turn when a little girl claiming to be Clark’s child arrives at their door. Embracing the situation, Eileen decides to foster the child temporarily while they navigate the complexities ahead. As Clark delves into the child’s mysterious history, an eerie connection develops between Eileen and the little girl.

While the jumpscares throughout the film maintain an average intensity, it’s the near-end sequence that elicits screams from viewers. Marking her first film appearance, Zeinab Harake impresses with her performance, and although the horror movie presents an unconventional storyline, the cast executes their roles exceptionally well.

In this captivating film, Mallari finds himself caught in a grim dilemma—sacrificing lives of the sinful to sustain his hexed mother’s life. Meanwhile, his descendant, Johnrey Mallari, embarks on a mission to rectify Severino Mallari’s wrongdoings through time travel. However, in the present, Jonathan, another descendant, discovers a vision of his fiancée falling ill. Driven by ambition, he seeks the cure Severino used to keep his mother alive, going into a hidden room in the ancestral house in Magalang, Pampanga.

“Mallari” draws inspiration from the true story of the Philippines’ first documented serial killer, Fr. Juan Severino Mallari, adding a chilling twist to a Philippine horror movie.

The Metro Manila Film Festival treated audiences to the poignant movie “Rewind,” featuring the stellar performances of Filipino icons Marian Rivera and Dingdong Dantes. This cinematic journey into reality explores the intricacies of life—its highs and lows, dreams and ambitions, and the profound impact of love and partnership. Served as a compelling reminder that life, with all its offerings, is a privilege that is often taken for granted.

As Nam June Paik wisely stated, “There is no rewind button in life.” This quote gained newfound significance after experiencing the emotional depth of “Rewind.” Prompted to reflect on the brevity of life and the importance of cherishing every moment. The film becomes a powerful lens through which one confronts their own fragility, urging to savor life’s intricacies and appreciate those who hold significance in the journey, for life is shorter than often realized.

As the plot unfolds, Becky and Badette navigate mistakes, keeping secrets, and grappling with identities for fame. Despite the failures, the movie beautifully portrays the chance for redemption and forgiveness, emphasizing the enduring bond between the two friends. The film not only celebrates the strong friendship and shared dreams but also dives into the complexities of love and reconciliation, offering a blend of humor and heartfelt storytelling with valuable moral lessons.

Students, teachers rage over messaging scam

Multiple reports have been received from students and teachers over a Messenger scam that has compromised several accounts February, leading to unauthorized messages and financial requests being sent to their contacts.

One unnamed student shared, “My ‘sister’ sent me a message that she wanted to borrow a GCash fund, amounting to 1,000 pesos. I transferred my funds, thinking she is in dire need of assistance. Next thing I know, her account was hacked.”

School’s ICT Coordinator, Japerson Bacus, issued a cautionary statement, advising users to exercise discernment. “Be watchful, especially when someone asks for a hefty amount through GCash,”

Bacus warned, “Let others know that his or her account may have been hacked, and report it to the Cybercrime Unit to curb the spread of this scam.”

“Be also observant when someone sends you a link leading to an unknown site. That way, hackers can access your personal information which can be used to trick and scam people listed on your account,” Bacus added.

As the Messenger scam continues to target users, vigilance and prompt reporting become essential tools in combating cyber threats within educational communities.

‘Paperless Education’ draws flak over exam remarks

LGU, PTA navigate drainage dilemma amidst classroom flooding woes

Students find themselves struggling with the recurrent task of cleaning their mudfilled classrooms every time heavy rains occur, a situation that stems from the inability to address structural issues until the Local Government Unit of Nabunturan decides to implement drainage in the canal.

Students are grappling with the transition to a ‘Paperless Education’ system, as evidenced by their lower exam scores, rather than seeing it as an effort to reduce paper consumption.

In a paperless setup, students take their examination by reading test items on the screen instead of a printed test paper. Vladimir Alexi Miñoza, school’s Supreme Secondary Learner Government President, conveyed that despite the intended benefits, a significant portion of the student body opposes the paperless system, “Majority of our learners are not in favor of the paperless system and there is a significant drop in test scores for other students.”

Jian Sayon, a journalism student, felt frustrated on his experience with the paperless education system during the First Quarter Examination due to limited time for answering. “The downside of it [Paperless Education] is that it is so difficult because the time is limited to just answering; we do not have the time to review our answer afterwards,” Sayon added.

Tessie Ysulat, Mathematics teacher, acknowledged the disadvantage of paperless education, where students may forget their results without physical copies. However, she emphasized the positive environmental impact, stating that using less paper contributes to saving more trees. “You need to lessen the waste of paper. In my case, quizzes are recorded in notebooks. Students keep their quizzes as a record. If the school dismisses, they can track their quizzes instead of throwing them away,” Ysulat explained.

Paperless education, touted as an eco-friendly option, contributes to conservation efforts by preventing indiscriminate tree-cutting for paper production. The school administration must weigh the challenges of ‘Paperless Education’ like lower exam scores against its positive impact on the environment.

Rosauro Mencidor, School PTA President, emphasized the need for a solution, revealing plans between NNCHS and the LGU to construct a drainage canal and divert water from above Purok 17, Barangay Poblacion.

However, a significant hurdle emerges as Mencidor raises concerns about the potential

drawbacks of implementing the drainage project. He contends that water from houses in the mountains, possibly contaminated with household waste or pig farming runoff, might further compromise the water quality, posing health risks to students.

"If there wouldn't be any drainage/canal and a rainfall occurs, the wall fence would break. If the Local Government Unit considers flood prevention, we will just use hollow blocks and pavement as a barrier," Mencidor stated.

The urgency arises from the imminent threat of the classroom walls deteriorating further, emphasizing the critical need for a comprehensive solution to safeguard the school environment.

Immediate action will be taken to address the flooding, including assessing the cause, repairing any damage, and implementing preventive measures to avoid future incidents.

BANANA LEAF PACKAGING: A Game-Changer for Canteen Snacks

Banana leaf packaging stands out as an exemplary solution in the quest for sustainable and environmentally conscious alternatives to the prevalent use of plastic packaging within the food industry. In comparison to plastic and various other non-biodegradable counterparts, banana leaves shine in their capacity to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions due to their swift decomposition facilitated by microorganisms in the environment.

The water-resistant nature of banana leaves not only minimizes waste but also eliminates the need for excessive additional packing materials, making it an eco-friendly choice for packaging applications. The composition of banana leaves is a harmonious blend of cellulose, lipids, fatty acids, aromatic compounds, and essential minerals such as calcium, iron, and potassium. This composition may vary depending on the specific type of banana plant and its growth environment.

Among the noteworthy components, cellulose, an indigestible polymer, is commonly used as an added fiber source in food and beverages. Lipids and fatty acids, crucial for sustaining bodily functions and energy production, contribute to the overall nutritional profile of banana leaves. The aromatic compounds found in these leaves not only possess unique flavors but can also offer certain medicinal qualities. Additionally, minerals present in banana leaves play a vital role in supporting regular bodily functions.

While banana leaf packaging does not alter the caloric content of the food it encases, it's essential to acknowledge that chemical compounds from the leaves may transfer to the packed product. As a valuable by-product of banana farming, the utilization of banana leaves for packaging extends beyond its ecological benefits.

This eco-friendly approach not only aids in reducing waste, promoting biodegradability, and ensuring sustainability but also contributes to the economic well-being of local communities. Thus, embracing banana leaf packaging emerges as a holistic and win-win solution, aligning environmental and economic considerations for a more conscientious and responsible future.

Fortify school security: Install surveillance cameras

A larger school size often translates to a broader spectrum of potential risks, including instances of unlawful behavior. While being dubbed the ‘Home of the Achievers,’ it loses its essence if basic security measures like installing CCTV cameras are neglected.

The clamor for surveillance cameras typically arises following incidents of jumping over the fence and especially lost belongings in which Project WATCH (We Advocate Time Consciousness and Honesty) would find themselves at a loss when items are not voluntarily returned.

Some argue that rather than surveillance, schools should prioritize building community trust. They also suggest reallocating funds from camera installation

to enhancing education and supporting extracurriculars.

While privacy and trust concerns are valid, student and staff safety is paramount. Presence of CCTV cams can also deter potential wrongdoers and monitor accident-prone areas, ensuring a safer environment. Thus, while privacy concerns should be addressed, installing CCTV cameras is necessary for the safety and well-being of the school community.

Consider the safety and well-being of our school community by taking action to install CCTV cameras, ensuring a secure environment where students and staff can thrive.

Every one of us has, at some point, taken a detour into the land of unwarranted optimism and fanciful expectations. Imagine you're scrolling through social media, and suddenly, your cognitive overlords serve you a buffet of information perfectly tailored to your existing beliefs.

Yes, we're all guilty of momentarily donning our 'delulu' capes, embracing the extraordinary in the ordinary. It’s like they’re saying, “Why feast on reality when you can have a five-course meal of confirmation bias?”

Drawing inspiration from the fusion of "delusional" and "lulu," this behavior thrives in these echo chambers, turning our brains into dance floors where optimism waltzes and pessimism sulks in the corner.

Individuals selectively focus on positive information, reinforcing optimistic beliefs while neglecting potential risks. Wishful thinking, another

distortion, plays a vital role, with people believing in a scenario simply because they desire it to be true.

Neurologically, the brain's reward system perpetuates 'delulu' behavior, creating a loop strengthening optimistic thinking. Social media platforms contribute to 'delulu' thinking by exposing users to information aligning with their existing beliefs.

The intersection of 'delulu' behavior and mental health suggests the need for targeted interventions at individual and societal levels. Additionally, the impact of 'delulu' thinking on innovation underscores the need to strike a balance between fostering optimism for ambitious projects and maintaining a realistic understanding its challenges.

Just remember: Life's too short to take it seriously. Embrace the absurdity and dance to the rhythm of your 'delulu' brain.

In response to the alarming statistics from the World Health Organization, revealing 4.3 million premature deaths annually due to indoor air pollution, researchers have dedicated their efforts to improving air quality for a healthier future. One notable solution on the horizon is an Arduino-Based Automatic Solar Indoor Air Purifier, a robotic system designed to revolutionize air purification with a sustainable approach.

Ryan Hermoso, Jyrah Myj Henerana, and Amber Bantiilan, are actively engaging communities to raise awareness about the significant role individuals play in curbing air pollution as part of their outreach. They advocate for

the importance of adhering to the 4Rs – Re-use, Reduce, Recycle, and Repair – to collectively combat the escalating challenges of air pollution that our planet faces today. Its automated functionality, coupled with robotics, enables the purifier to dynamically align itself with the sun’s position, ensuring adaptability in various scenarios. The ultimate goal is to decrease reliance on conventional electricity sources, thereby contributing to lower energy consumption and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

Achievement and Support: INVERSELY PROPORTIONAL

The higher you reach in a certain competition, the higher you suppose to receive abundant support from the school and other sponsors - perhaps that does not what it went by our sports players.

In the world of competitive sports, skilled players who have excelled in both DAVRAA and Palaro often find themselves overlooked. The demands of their rigorous training schedules mean that they cannot always maintain a constant online presence or be active on social media. This lack of visibility makes it challenging for enthusiasts to locate their profiles and engage with their achievements in the form of photos and videos.

Empowering students by recognizing and celebrating their accomplishments can significantly contribute to their self-esteem and academic performance. While some may experience disappointment for not securing the top position in their class, it is essential to convey appreciation and support. Like sports, disparities exist in the recognition and support extended to achievements in various fields such as journalism, arts, science, and math.

Recognition and support are pivotal for students as it validates their hard work and dedication. Unfortunately, there is a prevalent lack of acknowledgment from educational institutions. Instances of school celebrations that are not publicized can pose difficulties

if students are left unaware. To address this, it is imperative for schools to take the lead in informing students, ensuring that information is disseminated responsibly within the school community before spreading beyond its borders.

Beyond academics, students engaged in sports contribute significantly to the school's identity and reputation. Just as individuals possess distinct personalities, schools develop unique traits over time. School leaders play a crucial role in cultivating a supportive and disciplined environment, thereby bolstering students' sense of purpose and achievement.

The absence of support and recognition may lead students to feel disheartened in their pursuit of excellence, driven not only by the desire to excel academically but also to make their parents proud. Providing unwavering support and recognition motivates students to excel further and fosters an environment where they can confidently showcase their talents.

Schools bear the responsibility of nurturing a positive and disciplined environment. This involves not only providing necessary resources for competitions but also actively recognizing and supporting students across various fields. By doing so, schools contribute to creating a motivated and empowered student body, fostering a culture of excellence and achievement.

The first grassroots development league in the province, the Davao de Oro Basketball League, will begin to shoot ball this March 2024.
