NNUH holds Inspirational Fundraising Awards at AGM Our hospital charity is supported by staff, patients and the wider community. Send A Smile With Santa We have launched our Send a Smile with Santa campaign for the third consecutive year with the aim of providing a gift for every inpatient in our hospital on Christmas Day. The campaign, which is running in partnership with the Norwich Evening News, is looking for donations of gifts for patients of all ages. Donated gifts do not need to be large and can be items as simple as toiletries or a puzzle book. Presents can be delivered to the main NNUH reception desks and at the Archant building on Rouen Road in Norwich. Gifts can also be donated at various Natwest branches across the county as well as their mobile facility Branch Nelson.

We had a fantastic evening at the Staff Awards event held on 20th October, including having the opportunity to recognise the amazing dedication of our staff with 25 or 40 Years’ Service and through the Lifetime Achievement Awards for colleagues who have made an outstanding contribution to the Trust during a long NHS career.

On time, every time Neurology specialist nurses at NNUH are raising awareness that patients with Parkinson’s Disease need their medications on time, every time. They offer support to patients with Parkinson’s Disease (PD), Parkinsonisms, Multiple Sclerosis and Motor Neurone Disease. They provide specialist advice to ward teams caring for inpatients and also see a caseload of about 1,000 outpatients with these conditions. The team also runs education sessions for students, ward and newly qualified staff. PD is a complex neurodegenerative condition resulting from the progressive loss of dopamine producing neurones within the brain. Symptoms include tremor, rigidity and bradykinesia (slowness of movement). However it also has a number of possible nonmotor symptoms such as chronic constipation, impaired swallow and cognitive impairment. Neurology specialist nurse Felicity Roberts said: “Medication is time critical. If people with PD don’t get their medication on time, their ability to manage their symptoms may be lost, for

example they may suddenly not be able to move, get out of bed or walk down a corridor. “We have a system whereby we can quickly identify when PD patients are admitted to NNUH, so we can be proactive in our support. We advocate the use of pill timers and various medication reminders. We are also part of a medicines management group that meets regularly within the trust to strive to achieve the best standards of care.“ Staff can find guidelines and contact the Neurology specialist nurses through the staff intranet by clicking on the “Get it on time” icon.

The Awards are a reflection of the teams and individuals I meet every time I walk around our hospitals. I have the privilege of seeing our teams at work and I always feel a huge amount of pride and respect for our amazing staff and the care and support they give to our patients. In September at our AGM (see page 2) we presented the now annual NNUH Inspirational Fundraising Awards to thank our community and give recognition for your constant and unfailing support. It was a pleasure to meet everyone and offer sincere thanks for everything our community does for our hospitals.

Staff Awards 2017 Thirty one individuals and thirteen teams from the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust were recognised for their outstanding efforts and achievements at our Staff Awards in October. The annual ceremony, sponsored by Serco, was held at OPEN in Norwich with guest host ITV News Anglia presenter Jonathan Wills. The awards scheme is held for the Trust’s 7,000 staff and volunteers. Patients and colleagues nominated employees in sixteen award categories and you can read about the winners in the following pages. The awards night also recognised those employees who have reached 25 or 40 years’ service.

Outstanding contribution to the Health System This is a special Award for 2017 which goes to the team who has worked with partner agencies, right across the health and social care system, to improve care for patients. WINNERS: Integrated Discharge Team (pictured right with Chief Executive Mark Davies) One nomination said: “This team makes a difference to literally hundreds of patients every week by supporting their discharge home. The team has come together with a common purpose and are now really delivering results – reducing the number of patients who have a hospital stay of over 14 days to a 4

record low. The team is well known throughout the hospital for helping at ward level. They work with colleagues across the health system in social services, community services and the care sector to deliver a high quality service to patients.”

Apprentice of the Year

An extract from the nominations..... Elizabeth always cares about doing the best for the patient, helping them with all their needs. She likes making everyone smile and helps them to forget about all the problems they may have. She is really good with the patients who have dementia, and she is able to make them laugh and she likes to put music on for them or read a newspaper if they are not able to. Elizabeth said: “I am shocked and thrilled to have won the award for HCA of the year. I feel proud and grateful to have achieved this recognition.”

When Brogan started work on Delivery Suite, one of our busiest and most complex areas, she immediately built strong relationships with the wider teams - both clinical and non-clinical, and threw herself into understanding the role and improving our systems. She greets everyone with a smile and goes out of her way to support people at a very exciting but emotional time of their life. We are so proud that Brogan has been successful in being offered a substantive contract in Antenatal Clinic. She is an asset to our team, an Ambassador for the Division and for the Norfolk and Norwich - and we hope she will continue to thrive and develop her career here with us. Brogan said: “I would like to thank my mentor and management for all their help and support throughout my apprenticeship. I feel like I’ve made everyone proud!”

An extract from the nominations..... Rhiannon has been with the department less than a year and yet has shown she has an exceptional work ethic and drive to learn and achieve. She is eager to gain as much knowledge and experience as she can and is a fantastic role model to young people joining the NHS. She is consistently complimented on her patient care and bedside manner by patients, relatives and staff alike. Rhiannon has grown into a smiling, enthusiastic young woman who is

a very much valued member of our team. Rhiannon is an asset to our team, people love working with her and I cannot think of anyone more deserving of this award. Rhiannon said: “Winning the Clinical Apprentice of the Year award is an amazing achievement and means a lot to me that my work has been recognised, which is a lovely feeling.”

An extract from the nominations... Simon is always cheerful, goes out of his way to help staff and is wonderful when engaging with patients/visitors. It really is a pleasure when he comes into our department when delivering post or notes to us. At present I have a bad shoulder awaiting surgery and he will leave notes on my desk (without even asking) so I don’t have to lift! Simon always goes above and beyond and, I believe, deserves this award. Simon added: “I am delighted to have won this award and would like to thank all those who nominated me and support me in my role. Winning this award was completely unexpected. I always do as much as I can to help colleagues, and I am truly grateful to be recognised.”

An extract from the nominations... As part of a national programme, the Workplace Health and Wellbeing Team were asked to vaccinate 75% of staff for flu last autumn - a target that was extremely challenging. Team members went above and beyond the call of duty giving their time to ensure the ‘Flu tent’ was staffed from 6.30am each morning. They also gave up their weekends and evenings to ensure the flu trolley was roaming around the wards and departments to provide staff with the opportunity to have their vaccination. There was also a creative element with the Hospital Choir singing in a ‘flu’ video. Hilary Winch who leads the team said: “The Workplace Health & Wellbeing team were thrilled to be awarded Team of the Year 2017. Our work is often undertaken in the background supporting the health of all NNUH staff in many different ways. Our nomination focused on last year’s flu vaccination programme and the team really did go above and beyond to ensure we were one of the highest performing trusts in England and achieved the steep NHS England target. It was lovely for our team to be recognised and valued for our hard work by our organisation.”

Additionally, she will always ensure she is going that extra mile and making the workplace comfortable for everyone. Her enthusiasm and motivation of care for her colleagues sets an influential environment and example to the rest of the workforce. Joanne said: “I feel extremely proud and grateful to even be nominated, let alone win the award. I’m lucky to do a job I love as well as working with an amazing team in radiotherapy who always put the patient first. We have some of the busiest machines in the UK but still strive to deliver the highest quality treatment so the award should really be for the whole department!”

An extract from the nominations... Helen was massively influential in helping the Trust to reduce our medical locum expenditure. Helen took personal responsibility for changing our approach to booking locums, exploring alternatives and supporting clinical teams through her warm and professional interpersonal skills and her excellent organisational skills. Helen said: “I feel really honoured to have been recognised for all my hard work reducing the agency locum spend at NNUH over the past 12 months. It may have been an individual award but the overall achievement in the financial savings is down to members of different teams coming together to realise an overall goal.”

Volunteer of the Year WINNERS: Paul Arnold (pictured left) and Dave Massey (pictured below left) FINALISTS: Cromer Dialysis Volunteer Team and Sharon Kelvie (pctured left to right below) The Volunteer of the Year award was given jointly to Paul Arnold and Dave Massey for their dedicated commitment to the Trust. Paul’s nomination said: “Paul has been a dedicated volunteer on Guist Ward for the best part of two decades even coming in using a stick whilst waiting for a knee replacement. He assists us ward clerks with a range of tasks and even wrapped all the Christmas presents for the patients.” Dave’s nomination said: “Dave is an amazing support to the Emergency Department co-ordinator and assists with ensuring patients’ paperwork is copied and ready to go. He is cheerful and ensures that equipment is working and close to hand, and his cheery nature and smile mean it is a pleasure to work alongside him.”

I feel grateful for the recognition I have been given for all my hard work in the Oral Health department. Winning this award would not have been possible without the support and inspiration I have received from the Trust and the many colleagues I have worked with over the last 18 years in various clinical positions. I am passionate about the NHS and proud to be a nurse and I will continue to maintain exceptionally high standards of patient care and give my colleagues my full support.”

The team works alongside the Research and Development department, participating in research for new medications, new therapies, new medical devices and finding new uses for existing treatments. The nursing team checks the safety of trial participants at all times and ensures that prospective participants are fully informed.” Orthopaedic Clinical Research Team

An extract from the nominations... “This team is dedicated in providing patients with the opportunity of participating in research studies and access to novel treatments for long-term Orthopaedic conditions. Within the Orthopaedic portfolio there are

currently six studies running which all have recruited well, both to time and target, demonstrating the team’s excellence at feasibility analysis and study delivery.”

When I reflect on the intervening years, I think I have been lucky to have worked with a superb group of colleagues throughout the NNUH, very many of whom, I am sure, have at least as much claim to the award as I. Teaching and training others is an important and valuable aspect of our work, something we should strongly support: the future of healthcare in this country depends upon it. As a medical student and early in my professional career, I benefitted from the generous and excellent teaching and advice of many colleagues in many disciplines. Their example is something I value and have tried to repay in my own practice. Being nominated suggests that I may have taken the advice of Hector, one of the teachers in Alan Bennett’s ‘The History Boys’: “Pass the parcel. That’s sometimes all you can do. Take it, feel it and pass it on. Not for me, not for you, but for someone, somewhere, one day.”

Patient Choice - Most Outstanding Individual WINNER: Katherine Duffield, Diabetes Specialist Nurse (pictured right with EDP Health Correspondent Geraldine Scott) FINALISTS: Carla Amaro, Assistant Practitioner, Elsing Ward and Mr Bhaskar Kumar, Consultant Surgeon

The Patient Choice award went to Katherine Duffield who works at the trust as a Diabetes Specialist Nurse. Katherine’s nomination said: “During the last two years I have experienced a very challenging time and have felt I can talk to Katherine about my personal wellbeing. She supports me in aspects of my wellbeing and psychological care that can, and does, affect my diabetes. Katherine is the most caring and approachable person, she has such deep knowledge of both the research and theories of diabetes care and a wealth of experience in clinical management, which means she can always find problem solving strategies to help me.”

An extract from the nominations... I was in bed on Cley Ward in January this year after a massive operation, resulting in a stoma bag which I hated. All the staff were wonderful but I would mention Debs and Amy on nights and all day staff who would help me with my bag. I was also unfortunate to have my 81st birthday there and they made me a cake. I am forever grateful to them all. No contest – Cley Ward! Claire Wells, Cley Ward Sister said: “The team is simply delighted. We all work so hard to achieve the best outcomes for our patients. It’s lovely that our efforts were appreciated and, for us, it’s the best possible award for us to receive.”

Peter said: “After retiring in March I was surprised and really chuffed to hear that I had been nominated for this prestigious award. To be shortlisted and win truly was an honour and the icing on the cake to a 40+ year career in this Trust. I could not have achieved this nor had such an enjoyable career without my colleagues and friends and I would like to add my heartfelt thanks and best wishes for their help, support and fun over the years.”

Chris has been a dedicated respiratory nurse for 22 years since qualifying. She has always been a strong advocate for her patients putting their experience above all else and striving to improve their pathway. She is a role model to her staff and colleagues, respected and admired by all. One nomination said: “She is a clear leader in her profession and it has been an honour to work with her. Chris has been instrumental in the growth of our department, always putting the needs of patient care, welfare and families first.”

John Skrypniuk, Consultant Clinical Scientist, Nuclear Medicine John said: “This accomplishment would not have been possible without the help and support of all of the other scientists, radiographers, technologists, medical staff, nurses, assistant practitioners, healthcare assistants and clerical support staff that make up the Nuclear Medicine service at the NNUH. In April, stroke patients at NNUH were the first in the country to benefit from a new monitoring system which will help to prevent a second stroke from occuring. With information received from the new system, consultants can prescribe medication within two days, preventing further strokes. Previously this process could take several weeks. June 2016

In June, neonatologists at NNUH were the first in the world to publish research showing the thermal safety of scanning newborn babies with high powered 3T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners. This research was done when NNUH took part in the national MARBLE study which investigated the benefits of using the more detailed 3T MRI scans for babies.

May 2016

The month of May saw the launch of our improved ‘finger food menu’ during Dementia Awareness Week to aid patients, including those with dementia. Research has shown that a finger food menu for patients with dementia could help with enjoyment of food and drink, improve nutritional intake, help maintain independence and avoid coordination problems with cutlery.

July 2016

In July, NNUH gained international recognition from UNICEF and was fully accredited with its prestigious Baby Friendly Initiative (BFI) Award. The rigorous UNICEF assessment involved interviews with 55 new mothers about all aspects of their care relating to feeding and caring for their babies. The report noted: ‘It was clear to the assessment team that pregnant women and new mothers receive a very high standard of care.” The award was presented by TV and radio broadcaster Jake Humprey, his wife Harriet and their 11-month-old son Sebastian who was born at NNUH.

August 2016

In August, we launched our monthly PRIDE awards which celebrate the work of staff who make a difference to the lives of patients and colleagues through their kindness, dedication and expertise. The awards are based on the Trust’s values: Peoplefocused, Respect, Integrity, Dedication and Excellence (PRIDE). Each month two members of staff receive recognition and one team winner is selected every quarter. Our first two winners were Sarah Harper, Asthma Nurse Specialist (pictured below) and Katie Symonds, Matron for Respiratory Medicine (previously Cringleford Ward Sister).

October 2016

A large-scale research trial got underway at NNUH in October which is part of a nationwide study to revolutionise cancer treatments, leading the way to personalised medicine and more effective treatments, based on a genetic diagnosis. NNUH is one of the hospitals in the UK which is taking part in the 100,000 Genomes Project, a world-leading DNA project which aims to sequence 100,000 complete sets of DNA from around 70,000 NHS patients.

September 2016

In September, thanks to kind donations, a group of dialysis patients were given the chance to enjoy a holiday to Bournemouth with no interruption to their treatment. Staff and volunteers at Cromer Hospital’s dialysis unit organised the five-day trip for patients who attend sessions at their unit. During the break, it was arranged that there was a dialysis session at the privately run KC Dialysis Centre which specifically provides facilities for patients who wish to visit the seaside town of Bournemouth and the surrounding area for a holiday. A great time was had by all!

November 2016

In November, it was announced that we achieved our best ever result in getting our staff vaccinated against flu. More than 70% of staff opted in to the ‘Proud to be an NNUH flu fighter!’ campaign and received their flu jab. A fantastic result!

REVIEW OF THE YEAR December 2016

NNUH celebrated the festive season by giving all inpatients a present to open on Christmas Day as part of the ‘Send a Smile with Santa’ campaign. Gifts flooded in after we set a target of securing donations of 1,000 presents for patients of all ages, male and female, as part of the appeal.

January 2017

In January, our Cellular Pathology department celebrated receiving their accreditation from the United Kingdom Acceditation Service (UKAS) against the International Standards Insitute under their certification for Medical Laboratories.

A huge thank you to all those who donated such wonderful gifts to benefit patients at the hospital.

Patients who have Cellular Pathology tests such as biopsies and cervical cytology samples can be assured that our laboratory operates to the highest quality standards and that the tests and staff have been assessed to operate within a system that delivers a safe and effective service.

The Norfolk Care Awards aim to showcase excellence in care and support services across the county.

The team, which is made up of four Assistant Practitioners and a Project Manager, contact patients shortly after their diagnosis and carry out an Holistic Needs Assessment. This involves looking at all aspects of a patient’s life and working with them to ensure their physical, emotional and social needs are met.

In February, the Trust’s Integrated Apprenticeship programme was nominated in the Norfolk Care Awards Most Supportive Employer (Student Placement) category.

A new Survivorship team, funded by Macmillan Cancer Support, was established at NNUH to assess the individual needs of cancer patients and signpost them to support at key points in their cancer journey.

Expansion plans at Cromer Hospital welcomed by local community Nearly 50 members of the public visited the exhibition event about expansion plans for Cromer & District Hospital which took place on 25th October. The £1.8m expansion project was first announced in September at the AGM for the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (NNUH) which runs Cromer & District Hospital. NNUH is redeveloping one of the original buildings on the Cromer & District Hospital site to create space for service expansion. A new medical and cancer unit, planned to open in 2019, will have six treatment chairs, enabling an additional 2,000 chemotherapy treatments each year. There will also be space for three new clinic rooms and two new minor procedure rooms, creating an additional 10,000 outpatient appointments annually. The new unit will also free up space in the main Cromer Hospital building to deliver an extra 600 surgical procedures in dermatology, urology, vascular surgery and pain management. John Fry, Chairman of NNUH, said: “Our services at Cromer & District

Hospital have been very successful and we are building on that success by expanding the care we can provide in a rural area which has a high proportion of older patients. This will benefit local people who can receive first class hospital treatments without travelling to Norwich.” Iain Young, Operational Manager for Cromer & District Hospital, said: “We will be redeveloping one of the original buildings on the site, bringing it up to modern standards and using it for medical treatments. Cromer & District Hospital offers a high quality service in a modern setting.” Cromer & District Hospital currently treats over 140,000 patients each year, up from 106,000 when the redeveloped hospital opened in

2012. It provides a wide range of consultant-led outpatient services and day case procedures. There is also a Minor Injuries Unit which operates seven days a week.

Celebrate someone special at Cromer & District Hospital Cromer & District Hospital celebrates 150 years of providing care to the community in 2017/18 and we are inviting people to celebrate with us by dedicating a leaf which will form part of our copper tree outside the main hospital building. The beautiful tree and its leaves will be in place on the site for at least three years. You can choose your individual message, name or special dates to be displayed on the surface of the brass leaf as a lasting momento which will be attached to our Eternal Tree. The leaves are a perfect way to celebrate weddings, birthdays

and anniversaries or to remember someone special. An individual leaf costs £200 and you can select whether you would like a maple or oak leaf alongside choosing up to three lines of text to be engraved on to your leaf.
