EDI T OR S NOTE

H

ere in the north country, I usually equate the wedding season with the middle of summer. The weather’s nice, people typically have some time off coming and guests from out of town can turn a trip to the area for a wedding into a mini-vacation in the Thousand Islands or Adirondacks. That’s why I was surprised to find out that, according to a 2016 study by The Knot, a wedding resource and marketplace that helps couples prepare for the

big day, the two most popular months for wedding ceremonies are September and October. A fall wedding in the north country can have its advantages: the foliage can create a colorful backdrop for pictures; guests’ calendars may be a little less hectic than in the busy summer; and some venues and hotels may offer better rates during the offseason. It can be a little chilly for an outdoor ceremony, but I’ve been inside some pretty uncomfortably hot and stuffy reception halls in July and August.

So there are many people out there who will be walking down the aisle in the coming weeks and NNY Weddings has some tips on how to make it a perfect day. Brian Kelly Freelance writer Nicole Caldwell introduces readers to the owners of Pretty Little Vintage Co., an Adams Center business that offers vintage furniture, signs and other props to help create a unique wedding setting. Freelancer Katie Machia has compiled a list of essential items that every bride should consider having on hand on their wedding day, mostly common things that everyone has around their house, but probably overlooked as part of the preparation for the ceremony. There are also pointers on how to decide on a wedding venue or location. Regarding location, I had come across an item in early July in the Currents section of the Watertown Daily Times that intrigued me. The item stated that Las Vegas is the second most popular destination in the world to get married. The number one location? Istanbul, Turkey. I remember thinking, “Interesting. Why Istanbul? Why not Paris, or New Orleans, or some tropical island?” I did a notvery-rigorous search of the internet at the time to see if there was a reason Istanbul topped the list. It appears the city is the new hot spot for international jet-setters, the Middle East’s version of Las Vegas. I just tried another shot at searching for the Istanbul-wedding explanation, but gave up after I came across a website that

6615 Buneo Road Port Leyden, NY 13433

Call Pam for more information or to make an appointment to come see us.

E DI T OR S NOTE told me that, actually, July is the most popular month for weddings. The next site I visited said, and I quote, “June is the most popular month for weddings, then August, followed by September and October.” That site did agree that Istanbul is the top wedding city in the world, but now I’m starting to wonder about the accuracy of some information I pull off the internet. So to recap, if you’re getting married in September or October, you’re either getting married in the most popular wedding month or the fifth-most popular month. I’m no longer sure and I’m quickly running out of months. Maybe by the time our next issue of NNY Weddings comes out in December, I’ll be able to confidently tell you that January and February are the most popular months (Think: Valentine’s Day.) For those getting married before our next issue, good luck with both the ceremony and the future. And if you’re getting married in Istanbul, be sure to let us know why. Enjoy,

Factors to Consider Before Choosing a Wedding Venue

nce couples become engaged and share the good news with their friends and families, the next step is to begin planning their weddings. While couples must make a myriad of decisions during the wedding planning process, perhaps none is more significant than

where to tie the knot. According to The Knot 2016 Real Weddings Study, the average cost of a wedding for couples who married in 2016 was $35,329. That's a sizable amount, and a big portion of that was spent on the wedding venue. The Real Weddings Study found that couples

spent an average of $16,107 on their wedding venues in 2016. That figure easily dwarfs the next biggest expense ($6,163 for the engagement ring) for couples tying the knot. Because the wedding venue comes with such a potentially high sticker price, couples should give ample consideration to a host of factors before choosing where to get married.

Size

Until they can agree on a guest list, couples might want to delay even looking for venues. However, some couples might want to first look at some venues so they can determine just how many guests they can afford to invite. Whether they're hosting small affairs or large parties, couples should choose venues that can comfortably accommodate all of their guests. If possible, look for venues with multiple reception areas, which might allow for some wiggle room if the guest list grows or dwindles during the planning process.

10

Some couples might have an ideal time of year they hope to get married. Some even know the exact date they hope to get married. While that can help with the planning, it can also limit couples with regard to their venue options. Some venues may be booked for as much as a year or more in advance during peak wedding season. The Real Weddings Study found that the most popular months to get married in 2016 were October and September. Couples who hope to follow in the footsteps of many 2016 brides and grooms may need to book their wedding venues well in advance. Those who can be more flexible regarding their wedding dates may find it easier to book their dream venues.

Insurance

Ask about the venue's insurance policies, including the policies the venue has to protect itself. In addition, ask if the venue requires couples to have their own wedding liability insurance

FEATURE for protection in the event of injury, property damage or incidents related to alcohol. Couples may also want to make the investment in cancellation/ postponement insurance, and some venues may even require it.

Financials

It's easy for couples to be focused on the bottom line when choosing wedding venues, but it's also important that they get a complete grasp of the financials before choosing a wedding venue. Ask about the amount of the initial deposit and if that deposit is refundable. In addition, ask when the deposit is due and when each subsequent payment is due until the balance is paid in full. This can make budgeting easier and planning less stressful. Couples should have fun choosing their wedding venues while recognizing that certain factors must be given ample consideration before signing any contracts. ~M.S.

COV E R STORY

rianna Pisani loves love. The 28-year-old loves it so much, in fact, that after she and her husband Chris tied the knot in 2015 Brianna didn’t want the experience to end. She looked around at all the vintage and handmade things they’d collected over the course of two years for their wedding, and Brianna saw a market. “It’s kind of funny,” Brianna says. “We were at Fort Bragg, and we were planning our wedding for Upstate New York. We were trying to find a company that would rent stuff for this, but we couldn’t find anything. So we built, found and brought all our own props and decorations to our wedding.” That’s when the light bulb went off. “I said, ‘If we were looking for this kind of stuff, then other people must be, too.’ I feel like I’ve always been creative, and I love pretty things. I love old things. I’ve also been to a million weddings.” She figured: Why not rent out the very things the couple had spent two years collecting? “When my husband and I moved back to New York, I wanted to do something big and challenging,” Brianna says. And as serendipity would have it, Chris was looking to start his own business. Just like that, Pretty Little Vintage Co. was born. “It just kind of works,” Brianna says—which may be the understatement of the year.

C O V E R S T O RY The wedding scene is experiencing a veritable fit of vintage. When it comes to weddings in 2017, everything old has become new again. The “Anthropologie look” of all things lace and gently aged that spiked in 2010 is back with a vengeance—and a twist. Today, brides and grooms are looking to mash-ups of old and new for fresh takes on classic appearances. Bridal Guide has listed vintage setups as one of the hottest wedding trends for 2017.

Vintage cars get paired with hip colors; while photographers now often use classic film (a top wedding trend carrying over from 2016) and photo booths get outfitted with flea-market antiques rather than dollar-store props. Whether a bride and groom go for classic, contemporary or follow a more specific theme like rustic, nautical or boho, they’re still likely to enlist the help of a service like Pretty Little Vintage for personalized, vintage touches.

C O V E R S T O RY A common-sense business plan can only breed success.

No one needed to tell Brianna that vintage is back in. Pretty Little Vintage has been in business for less than a year and managed to be completely slammed all summer. And until Chris returns from his latest deployment sometime in November, his wife is moving things along where the company is concerned—they’re booked right up until he comes home. “I think especially with Pinterest, social media and all the blogs, everyone just sees it and it’s charming and it’s adorable,” she says. “It’s just so cute.”

pull the whole thing together. We do a lot of sweetheart tables, too, in order to give the bride and groom a fun table just for them.”

At weddings, it’s all about the first look.

Brianna says planning vintage designs and setups for weddings is extremely rewarding. But just as there’s nothing like a groom seeing the bride for the first time in her dress, there is nothing like the moment the married couple-to-be lays eyes on the layout of their own reception. “I just love the final setup, after we get there,” Brianna says. “We have the brides and grooms come out to our warehouse before the wedding and we go through the final planning process, and they always give me pictures of their venue. But the best is going and setting it up, then seeing their reaction.” So far so good—Pretty Little Vintage hasn’t had a complaint yet. “The actual look is always more impressive than what they think it will be,” Brianna says. “That’s my favorite part.” To learn more about Pretty Little Vintage Co., visit www.prettylittlevintageco. com or follow the company on Instagram: @prettylittlevintageco.

Brianna grew up in Bolivar, N.Y., just south of Buffalo. Chris is a north country guy, raised in Ogdensburg. Brianna has a background in service: She earned her degree at Niagara University, where she studied hospitality and tourism. As part of her curriculum, Brianna worked extensively on the setup side for weddings and catering. The planning part is what comes to her naturally. Chris’ service to the military has caused the couple to move around a lot during their courtship and young marriage. Most recently, the pair made the move from Alabama to Adams Center, where they worked to get their business off the ground. “People find us on social media,” Brianna says of Pretty Little Vintage’s marketing strategy. “Facebook and Instagram have been awesome.”

that you can’t find at a thrift shop, call Brianna—she probably has it. She and Chris keep a big warehouse on their property filled with a multitude of couches, homemade farm tables they made themselves, guest book displays, props, lights, centerpieces and place settings. “We also do a lot of dessert displays,” Brianna says. “Usually I tell the brides, ‘Send me your Pinterest board before you come out so I can recommend pieces.’ I want to make their visions real for them.” The most popular retro setup for Pretty Little Vintage is the lounge: an interactive display of cool couches, chairs, tables and textiles that are great for pictures, but also comfortable respites from the sometimes stiff feeling of dining chairs. “We do a lot of lounges,” Brianna says. “They’re becoming more popular because they make your guests feel so special. I love to do those. We have two setups for lounges; one seats four to five, one seats seven to eight.” Brides and grooms can stop in Brianna and Chris’ warehouse to handpick personalized furniture arrays. “We have tons of couches, loveseats, sofas and chairs,” Brianna says. “And then we add pillows and things in their colors and décor to

Navigating Tough Decisions for the Perfect Wedding By: Sarah Compo

I

have always been indecisive. Whether it was little decisions, like picking out new back-to-school sneakers as an elementary student, or one of life’s larger choices, like deciding on buying my first house, I’ve always been one to examine every option carefully before landing on my “final answer.” Luckily, my years of being a “day-of-event coordinator” (in other words, someone who helps take care of all the “day of” details for events, namely weddings), have provided me with plenty of opportunities to get comfortable with helping couples navigate their big day. Here’s a look at some of the biggest decisions engaged people will have to make and my take on each.

Having a wedding party vs. not having a wedding party: WINNER: Tie. This one is totally up to the couple—and the number of siblings or close friends they each have. There are pros to having a big wedding party—namely people to get ready with, a squad to handle last minute details (ask me how many brides have needed someone to go grab them a toothbrush, stock the limo with champagne, etc.) and of course, having your closest friends and family by your side during one of

the most important days of your life. That being said, when you eliminate the need for bridesmaids and groomsmen it can make things a whole lot simpler, give your friends and family an opportunity to just relax at your wedding and, not to mention, save them a lot of cash.

Summer vs. fall vs. winter vs. spring weddings: WINNER: Summer. Here in Northern New York, we are lucky to experience all four seasons—and have beautiful locations that can be used during each of them for weddings or other events. However, it should come as no surprise that summer is the top pick for brides trying to decide on what time of year to tie the knot. As someone who has helped out with dozens of weddings at beautiful locations along the St. Lawrence River and Lake Ontario, it’s mine too. RUNNER UP: Winter. Now before you stop reading this article, hear me out. One of the best weddings I have ever been to was a friend’s that took place New Year’s Eve. Sure, the weather is a gamble, but think about the positives—excellent theming (sequins, clocks, party hats, etc.), an excuse to get dressed up (and not just sit on the couch and watch the ball drop) and being surrounded by all of your friends and family

as you usher in another year.

Dj vs. live band: WINNER: Live band. Music can make or break a wedding, and if your budget allows, I highly recommend hiring a live band. Live musicians can help get the crowd excited and, not to mention, add an element of sophistication to your reception. In addition, guests who don’t dance will still get enjoyment out of watching a live band perform. While I recommend a live band, I also suggest supplementing with an iPod—with a playlist of your favorite songs—that can be used during their breaks and will help ensure you don’t miss any dance floor favorites.

Open seating vs. seating chart: WINNER: Seating chart. Yes, it can be daunting—not to mention incredibly tedious—to come up with seating assignments that take into account the relationships and personalities of all of your guests. However, it definitely beats the chaos that can occur when people are making mad dashes to tables to reserve their spots, or dragging chairs to overcrowded tables so they can sit with their friends. Employ Helping Hands During Wedding Planning

A UTUMN 2017 | NNY LIVING WE DDI NGS

ccepting the honor of being in a friend or family member's wedding means more than dressing in the fancy clothing and showing up on the designated date. The wedding party - particularly the bridesmaids and groomsmen - should understand that standing alongside the happy couple generally means doing some work during the planning period as well as on the big day. It's the wise wedding couple who can recognize the strengths of their family and friends and put those attributes to work in productive ways. According to The Knot.com, the average wedding party includes four people on each side. That

24

means eight extra people who can lend their eyes, ears and hands to the bounty of tasks that comprise the wedding planning to-do list. Here's how to delegate with flair.

¡ Ask and ye shall receive.

tastings and help plan the reception menu. Friends with a flair for organization can be in charge of disseminating information to the entire wedding party or keeping a running list of gifts given at various parties so thank-you notes can be sent.

¡ Be specific when assigning tasks.

¡ Make wardrobe suggestions. Couples can rely on their most honest bridal party members when picking out wedding attire. These no-holds-barred individuals can set them straight on fit, look and comfort. Trust these people in helping to make the entire wedding party look stylish and feel confident.

First off, it is never safe to assume that the wedding party will be taking on extra work. Even if tradition suggests wedding party members lend a hand, it's in the best interest of the couple to graciously ask for help. This helps establish good will at the start. Rather than just asking for generalized help, make a list of the tasks that seem the most challenging and then delegate accordingly. If a member of the bridal party is excellent at getting travel deals, have him or her help arrange the honeymoon. Someone with an intimate knowledge of cuisine can come along to food

FEATURE · Extend the host/hostess duties.

It can be tiring for couples to tend to the needs of all their wedding guests. Couples can enlist the help of their wedding party to ensure that elderly or disabled guests get the assistance they need. The wedding party can also step up to serve as stand-in dance partners or to help grab drinks or escort people as needed.

· Get the party started.

Couples can usually count on their wedding parties to help fill the dance floor at the wedding reception - even when others have not yet built up the courage to showcase their dancing skills. Those bold and loveable friends and family members will help keep the energy up and make the wedding a blast. ~M.S.

Stay on Schedule When Mailing Wedding Invitations

nvitations are a vital component of wedding planning. In addition to informing guests about the details of the ceremony and reception, wedding invitations convey the

tone and style of the day. While there are no rules governing wedding invitations, there are some ways for couples to ensure they stay on schedule when mailing invitations.

路 Order invitations early.

Couples can start to consider their invitation options once the wedding date and venue have been chosen. The wedding

by Vinnie Together forever. Never apart. Maybe in distance, but never at heart.

stationery industry has changed a lot over the years. Couples can now order invitations from local retailers, use online printers, or design and print their own invitations from home. Invitations should be worded carefully and proofed several times before printing, so expect the process to take a couple of weeks from start to finish. Plan for this time so you will have the invitations ready for mailing roughly three months before your wedding day. Always remember to order extra invitations so you have spares in case you make a mistake or make last-minute additions to your guest list.

路 Get organized before mailing.

Start preparing invitations about a month before you plan to ship them, as this gives you ample time to write envelopes so you do not have to write them all on the same day. Keep the guest list handy and double-check the spelling of names and the addresses. Traditional etiquette suggests addresses should be handwritten, but computer-produced calligraphy on envelopes is now just as acceptable. Avoid printed labels. Be sure to have the complete invitation weighed at the post office so you will know exactly how much postage is required. Purchase stamps for both the invitation and the response cards.

A UTUMN 2017 | NNY LIVING WE DDI NGS

路 Coordinate mailing time and deadlines.

Our newly renovated, boutique-style hotel is ideal for your special day, offering resort-like amenities with both indoor and outdoor spaces for entertaining.

Where the Little Things Mean Everything

Mail invitations roughly eight weeks before the wedding. This gives guests time to make room in their schedules and arrange for travel, if necessary. Set the response date for three weeks before the wedding date so guests will have the time to make a decision and mail back the response. Many caterers require a final head count one week before the wedding, so make sure your RSVP date is at least two weeks before the big day so you can account for late responders.

路 Don't let responses linger.

Check off who is coming and who cannot make it as you receive each response. This way you'll know just how many responses are still outstanding and you can follow up if necessary. ~M.S

3 tips for Couples Considering Friday orSunday Weddings

T Let Monarch Photography Capture Your Special Day With Memories That Will Last A Lifetime!

he cost of weddings continues to rise. In its 2016 Real Weddings Study, bridal resource The Knot found that the average wedding cost couples and their families more than $35,000. With such a high price tag, it's no wonder happy couples look for ways to save money. One of the ways couples can save a sizable amount of money on their weddings is to tie the knot on Friday or Sunday instead of hosting a more traditional Saturday afternoon or evening wedding. Wedding ceremony and reception venues may charge considerably less to host weddings on Fridays or Sundays. Reception venues tend to be the largest wedding expenses, so reducing those rates can go a long way toward helping couples stay within their budgets. While the cost-savings of Friday or Sunday weddings may be the main focus for happy couples, it's important that grooms- and brides-to-be recognize that planning Friday or Sunday weddings may require some unique planning.

1. Avoid holiday weekends.

A UTUMN 2017 | NNY LIVING WE DDI NGS

Three-day holiday weekends may seem like the ideal time to host Friday or Sunday weddings, as guests likely already have Friday or Monday off from work. But the cost of travel and lodging may be much higher on holiday weekends than non-holiday weekends. That may compel some guests to decline their invitations. In addition, many families have holiday weekend traditions and it may be unfair for couples to ask them to interrupt or cancel those plans to attend their weddings.

FEATURE 2. Consider the timing.

When hosting a Friday wedding, couples may want to start the ceremony later than they might if they were getting married on a Saturday. That's because out-of-town guests who don't want to use more than one vacation day to attend the wedding may be flying in on the day of the wedding. A later start time gives guests more flexibility when booking flights. Starting later also allows local guests to work a full day and still make it to the ceremony on time. Couples who opt for a Sunday wedding may want their ceremonies to start earlier than they would on Saturday to accommodate guests who need to go to work on Monday morning.

3. Confirm vendor availability.

A UTUMN 20 17 | NNY L IVING WEDDI NGS

Wedding vendors are accustomed to working on Saturdays, when the vast majority of weddings take place. So couples should not simply assume a favorite deejay, band or catering company will be available to work their Friday or Sunday weddings. Couples who have particular entertainers or caterers in mind should confirm the availability of these vendors before booking a wedding and reception facility. It's also important that couples getting married on Sundays confirm that hotel rooms will be clean and ready in time for their guests to make it to the ceremony. Many hotels host wedding parties on Fridays and Saturday nights, and some might not be able to turn rooms around in time to accommodate Sunday wedding parties. Tying the knot on a day other than Saturday can save couples money and help make their weddings more unique. But it's important that couples consider more than just cost-savings before agreeing to get married on a Friday or Sunday. ~M.S.
